Jason Mercier
Jason is an artist who creates mosaic portraits of famous faces using a variety of materials including their own trash , sent to him by the celebrity in creation - Celebrity Trash. I like that comedy shows through his work through word play.
He also matches a theme to the celebrity, determining the medium used , Kevin Bacon - bacon , Snoop Dogg -Marijuana. But what interests me the most is the use of the celebrities own rubbish to create a decent portrait. I think that ones own rubbish is deeply personal, and a way of looking into someone's life , as shown in Phyllis Diller's portrait as her anti-itch prescription is forming part of her and lindsy lohans copious amounts of makeup tubes . Its also interesting what some consider rubbish .
However, i don't love the fact that its just famous faces, what about material culture , using normal peoples trash , from different economic backgrounds? I feel this would be more relatable, and just more interesting in general .For example to conduct something like the Burning house project - using items from completely different people/places , bringing them together in an exhibition .
While his work is interesting , i don't think i will be working like this in my own project , i would like to focus more on the effect of our rubbish rather , and in different mediums as i feel this mosaic style would be to constricting .

Workshop -Print making
Today I looked at rubbish in relation to our brief ‘temporary’ as it is temporarily used, then discarded . I was interested in the folds and creases of being crumpled up . I wanted to get the form of the folds , so I used cling film in the first one (black) , then a receipt (blue) , then paper (red). I rolled ink onto the items and pressed it onto the paper with the printing press.
The images are distorted on the 3rd picture , as the paper slipped , it created an interesting effect , similar to receipt lines , it draws like on consumerism and our throwaway culture.
