ruffle (v.)
early 14c., ruffelen, "to disturb the smoothness or order of," a word of obscure origin. Similar forms are found in Scandinavian (such as Old Norse hrufla "to scratch") and Low German (ruffelen "to wrinkle, curl;" Middle Low German ruffen "to fornicate"), but the exact relation and origin of them is uncertain. Also compare Middle English ruffelen "be at odds with, quarrel, dispute."
The meaning "disarrange" (hair or feathers) is recorded from late 15c.; the sense of "annoy, vex, distract" is from 1650s. Related: Ruffled; ruffling.

Dave Chappelle is the exact kind of man that abused me. He's the man that "slaps the queer out of you" and laughs and laughs, except a grown man just hit a kid. He's someone who'll scream homophobic abuse in your face, but if you try and ask to be treated right, suddenly you "can't take a joke". He's the man who threatens your mother because "boys don't need soft shit." I think a lot of people are very familiar with men like him.
Okay. This may be a long response...But I have been thinking a lot about the dichotomy of a black man, who can be considered a thinker, who literally ran away to Africa because he felt so much discomfort at the idea of his white audiences laughing *at* him and black people, vs. him...SAYING and believing, and worst -proliferating and enabling others to feel normal inflicting violence upon queer people. So. Here are the conclusions I've come to about this entire thing (bulleted because ADHD and I'd be here all day w/o it)
● Chappelle is an old "Unc-ish" black man who thinks he's still being edgy by reciting his old black man fears and insecurites to an audience who (he thinks) is shocked by it in a way that makes him "brave" for "telling the truth of what many feel" vs. being one of many very common and typical people, who age w/o growth w/ the social changes in society... i.e. those you see fold their arms and complain about "new words" like agender, them/they, et al, instead of just learning how to use new words.
● You see... Here's a secret of aging that no one tells you. Everything you knew "back in the day" even if you were empathetic and loving enough, strong enough to see and combat regressive hatred back then/go against the grain.... Will shift for new generations. And lately, so much for the good of marginalized people... i.e. undoing the normalized harassment, dismissal and hatred of marginalized queer folks back in specifically Dave Chappelle's day. The simple truth of it is this: Many people age and lament the loss of normalized cruelty. And many (thankfully, these are the elders you see w/o 'the old man yells at cloud' vibes...) simply change w/ the evolving norms.
● Dave. Refuses to grow. Point blank. His fame and privilege and his personal sense of thinking he's being "old school black and honest" helps w/ that.
● There are also many toxic specifically 'black' masculine traits that he has swallowed hook-line-and-sinker; rooted in ancestral trauma/memory. Specifically in black men, hat has caused many to adopt many of the thought processes of yt masculinity, i.e. misogynoir, and homophobia, while pretending it's some kind of super-black man b.s.
tl:dr Many black men flex extra hard in toxic ways to compensate for all the racial humilations they've dealt w/ in history and day-to-day. I've seen many an angry black male elder who went through Jim Crow, pass that ish; that righteous anger in sadly toxic ways, to their male children. And I've seen many elder black woman spoil their black sons (i.e. not teach them to respect queer people because the bible) to "make-up" for the hardships black men would experience in life.
● I guarantee Dave grew-up w/ that. A specific black male youth experience, in his day of listening to homophobic and misogynistic music and chatter from friend-groups trying to "date" i.e. mistreat as many black girls as possible to puff up a deflated sense of masculine self in dealing w/ cops pulling him over for nothing but melanin. ...A certain kind of black male "cool" that acts as a shield for those normalized racial traumas.
● Dave still traffics in and peddles the old style of "cool" that has evolved past him (shout-out to Lil' Nas, the entire cast of POSE, etc.), to the point where all that remains are dull, baggy eyes and a voice ruffened by all the weed smoke over the years. He is an old man standing still, in the singular "black" good old days...that doesn't know or want to know shit about the black queer community that also had to carve out an existence in those days.
● That is where his stubborn transmisogyny comes from. And why he can seperate the fact that he literally ran from people laughing past the joke because he realized it was at black people's expense...from throwing trans woman (many of whom are also black...intersection what??) under the bus of all the violence inflicted upon them, with that TERF head-ass bullshit.
● And one more thing... because I am also on twitter and it disgusted me to witness... So many transphobic black people on that platfrom were wiping their brows in relief at being able to parlay that into a misdirect at "anger" at yt trans woman co-showrunner of Dear YT White People for it's lacking show quality and *successfully* squashed the transmisogyny at the heart of the discussion around Dave. ...That shit irked me to no end. So, queer community. I hear you, I see you all. I love you. ....Especially my trans black brothers and sisters. I'm a demi elder black woman who feels incredibily fortunate to have had the life experiences and perspectives necessary to still *see* people and grow in that seeing every year I exist on this earth. That is *not* an experience everyone gets or WANTS to get, sadly. There is a certain kind of stubborn safety in aging and staying in what is already known to you, while crossing your arms and scoffing at all the "changes". My message of wisdom, is DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN to NOT do/be that.

Hmm, I've got a few questions about Detective, if you don't mind me asking~!
What's been his favourite case to work on?
His least favourite case?
How long has he been working as a detective?
How does he conduct his investigations?
(Frenlom)
What's been his favourite case to work on?
Detective: My favorite? Hm, ah I remember. A mafia boss hired me once to track down some real bad people who kidnapped his little girl. This guy was a different case, sure he was a mafia kingpin with an underground gambling ring and weapons trafficking, but the neighborhoods he had his work in were top notch. A real mixed multitude lived there in real peace and prosperity. I respected him and gladly helped him find his daughter, took care'a them punks too. He ended up stopping the weapons trafficking after that though cause I asked. He took up money laundering and started a security business usin' his men for local businesses.
His least favourite case?
Detective: how I became an ego. Still haven't cracked it.
How long has he been working as a detective?
Detective: I joined the police force when I was 24, left when I was 25 after becoming a detective once I saw how corrupt and evil they were, and that i couldn't fix it. Been a private investigator ever since.
How does he conduct his investigations?
Detective: i'm a boots on the ground kinda guy. I get into the streets, meet up with those who can give me info, ruffen' up those who won't. that kinda stuff.

Art Blog #1
I looked up the definition for “aesthetic”, and two meanings came up. The first being an adjective defined as “concerned with beauty, or appreciation of beauty”, and the noun as “a set of principles underlying and guiding the work of a particular artist or artistic movement” (Google). In my own words, I would describe aesthetic as a style or theme that is visually appealing. I see Instagram profiles that have a common color theme purely for the aesthetic, and it’s actually somehow appealing. The relationship between art and beauty I believe is are not completely synonymous with each other, but in some ways are. Art can be described as beautiful, and something beautiful can be described as art, but there are exemptions. In modern day beauty would most be used to apply towards a person’s looks, and not towards art, and art has a definition ranging from painting to photography to music. I found a quote to embody my thoughts by Art blogger Joy Ruffen, she stated “ Beauty is not synonymous with art, but it is endlessly associated with beauty. There is an intimate, even symbiotic connection between the two. It would be hard to imagine art without beauty, and even it antithesis ugliness. Art comes from the heart of man and is one of the humanities.” (Ruffen, Joy). What she means by this is that the bridge between beauty and art is not a one way street, and that they aren’t exactly linked together, though for the most part they are associated with one another. Art can be ugly, horrifying, and gruesome, but beauty is not, as it is the complete opposite of that. Another quote to explain the relationship between beauty and art over time was by blogger Chiara Leonardi, she said “The fundamental difference between art and beauty is that art is about who has produced it, whereas beauty depends on who’s looking. “ (Leonardi, Chiara). I completely agree with this because different people have different standards of beauty, where art is an expression of emotion by the creator. The relationship between beauty and art has changed because people’s standards of what is beautiful and what is not changes throughout time. What may be in style this month may be hideous in the coming years, and that is just how time works.
Such as art, beauty has changed over times. I remember seeing art of the early 1500s, such as the famous Mona Lisa. The painting would be considered the epitome of female beauty, and a visual representation of happiness, but when compared to the ideal woman of modern times, it isn’t the same. The painting depicts a woman in front of a woody background. The woman was considered the “ideal woman” and depiction of beauty.
Tumblr media
Another painting I’ve seen shown many times, in films such as “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, and even seeing a replica in real life. A painting to depict the relationship between art and beauty would be A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat (1884). In the photo, a group of people are seen at a park, enjoying themselves. What I have noticed was the right of a painting, a woman with an umbrella. I see the type of garments she is wearing and it is clear that what she is wearing was considered “beautiful’’ during that time period, and was so that it was depicted in a painting to enhance its beauty.
Tumblr media
The last photo I chose was from a social media public figure by the name of Ambar Driscoll. She took a picture, and it blew up with people getting tattoos of it, and I believe I understand why. The picture has aesthetics (neon light’s in the glasses), and the figure in the painting is a beautiful woman. This is the standard of beauty in our society, and the picture is a direct relation of art and beauty. Art is being shown through the aesthetics, and beauty is being shown through the person in the picture.
Tumblr media
The relationship between art and beauty today is much different from hundreds of years ago. Art nowadays is abstract, and can have multiple different outlets, where beauty is now more focused on looks of people rather than ultimate beauty such as nature and landscapes. Nowadays art does not have to be beautiful, it can be sad, and somber, and does not have the restricting quality of being beautiful as it was centuries ago.

Art & Beauty
Aesthetic is originally defined as, “concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty”. However, when I hear that term being used, I don't just think of something being beautiful. I feel it describes something as being original, unique, and to contain natural beauty; it should bring a sense of contentment and comfort to its audience. It is an expression of ones thoughts, feelings, and personality, but more importantly it tells the story of its creator.
Public speaker Joy Ruffen stated, “Not all art is considered beautiful and beauty isn’t always considered art.”, as we’ve learned previously. Art and beauty are not synonymous, but they still share a strong relation between them. What makes art interesting is that artwork itself is dependent on its creator, whereas beauty depends on who is looking at it. Although the relationship between the two has changed quite a bit over time, according to Tate.org.uk, “Beauty is one of those ideas that over the past 100 years or so has been slowly downgraded when it comes to considering the value of art. It’s not so long ago that people would have named it as one of the qualities that defined art. Many still do. But what they mean by beauty has become a shadow of its former self.”
Artwork has evolved greatly over time. New visual ideas, structures, techniques, etc. have come to light from different artists around the world. There are 10+ eras of art history beginning at before 500 until present. The painting of Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the most famous pieces in history. It was created during the Renaissance era (1400-1600) and what makes this painting so unique is her smile. The closer you look, the less her smile exists; the further away you are, it shows the dimension and shadow around her mouth giving the illusion that she’s smiling more.
Tumblr media
Pablo Picasso was known for Cubism Art (Cubism era =>1908-1920). He used geometric shapes to create images that drew away from three dimensional artwork. He used his unique creativity to create something different that still held an honest form of the object(s) being painted.
Tumblr media
Yayoi Kusama is considered a contemporary artist (Contemporary Art => 1970-present). As we learned in last weeks unit, she is known for her installation art; her Obliteration Room. She used a large space as her blank canvas and converted it into a colorful room of polkadots.
Tumblr media
As you can see, art has taken on so many new meanings throughout history. Different thoughts, views, and interpretations of art has depended on the way it is created and perceived. What one finds beautiful, others may find bland. It seems as though society has put this image in our heads that the world is a beautiful place and we should always see the beauty in everything. However, I believe that not everything is beautiful; not all art is beautiful but that there is meaning and a story to be told behind every piece created. I value art as a whole, and that someone allowed a piece of their personal life to be viewed by the world with open thoughts and interpretation. I think that is what makes art beautiful; anyone can look at someones artwork, but the fact that the artist left it up to their audience to decide what it means and what kind of connections they can make to it sheds a whole new light on things.

A Gift From me to You: A Chanter tale
A birthday gift from me to all of you ;)
A slow day at the shop. Chanter sighed, sitting behind the front desk of his Thrift shop. A cup of tea slowly descends from the roof, held by a scarf. It is gently set on his desk. Chanter smiles “thank you dear.”
The scarf finishes descending and drapes itself over his shoulders.
Graffiti walks into the store, glowing neon blood splattered over his clothes and on his cricket bat.
“are you two still fused? and dear god who’s blood is that?”
“yeah we still fused christmas bro, and would you believe if I said it was someone who deserved it?” Graffiti was the fused combination of Ausham, the creativity, and Glossy, the encouragement.
“what happened Graffiti?” Chanter stands from his chair and approaches them.
The neon disaster laughs, “so we was all up and walkin down the street ya’know? And this super wack bro is all straight up being an absolute skeevy bastard you know? so I was all like ‘dude, back the eff of’ right? And the unrad dawg think’s he can be all up and shovin me, ya’dig? So i went and busted him up a bit you know? ruffen up a tad”
“Graffiti, you know I have a hard enough time understanding Glossy on a good day, but you are a whole other level. Is the man dead?”
“nah dawg, just knocked the eff out. The lady is all good though, escorted her home, gave her some advice on how to defend ya’self. “
“...good, at least you didn’t kill another person, now please defuse, it’s a slow day, but the last thing We need is someone coming in to my store and the first thing they see is a neon man with blood splattered all over himself. “ Chanter uses his scarf to cover his nose.
Graffiti groans, his form desovling into a blog of color before splitting into two, Glossy and Ausham, once more.
“good, now look alive, people will be coming in any second now!
and now, it’s where you all come in! Do you want to continue the story? send some asks! Multi-fandom OK, let’s get this story going!

Stiftelsen Kanvas først i Norge
Se stillingsutlysningene her:
