(Cime Tempestose, cap. IX, Catherine) Emily Brönte, la piú celebre delle 3 sorelle scrittrici, nacque nello Yorkshire da Maria Branwell e dal pastore irlandese Patrick Brönte. Il cognome Brönte fu preso dal padre in onore dell'ammiraglio Horatio Nelson, che fu nominato duca di Bronte, località vicino a Catania, dal re delle Due Sicilie, Ferdinando IV di Borbone. La visione del mondo di Emily fu profondamente influenzata da una travagliata storia familiare: la madre morí quando lei aveva 3 anni, la tubercolosi uccise le due figlie maggiori in età infantile, Branwell, unico figlio maschio, soffriva di una forte depressione e l'abuso di alcool, oppio e laudano lo condussero a una prematura morte a soli 31 anni. Emily stessa si ammalò di tubercolosi e morí 3 mesi dopo il fratello nel 1848 e 6 mesi dopo morí anche la sorella Anne. Charlotte unica sorella superstite riuscí a sposarsi ma morí poco dopo le nozze nel 1855 a 39 anni sempre a causa della tubercolosi. Cime Tempestose, il suo unico romanzo, fu una struggente sintesi delle sue tragiche esperienze di vita, che si sposò perfettamente con lo spirito romantico dell'epoca. Cime Tempestose fu un'autentica novità letterale che si contrappone fortemente al romanzo rosa di riferimento dell'epoca, Orgoglio e Pregiudizio, rifiutando lo stile razionale, distaccato e quasi psicologico della Austen per trascinare il lettore in un vortice di passioni e emozioni.
