STARTER RULE CHANGE:
Happy Friday, Islanders! We've been watching and listening to feedback, and have decided to tweak our starter rule again. These rules have been updated as of June 16, 2023.
One starter every 24 hours is permitted.
Stagger your starters for multiple muses. Keep them at one per hour.
Updated: Starters will still use the tag ( #theinstitutestarter ) but due to its unreliability, all open starters must be reblogged to the starter blog within a few minutes of being posted.
Closed starters do not need to be reblogged to the starter blog.
Updated: You must reply to at least three recent open starters before posting a new open of your own. Recent is defined as within the last two months. If a recent starter has no replies (not notes, replies), it must be one of the three you reply to.
Updated: Event starters are included in recent starters, but if an event has ended, please check ooc with the player before replying. If an event starter has no replies even after the event has ended, it still counts as an empty starter and must still be replied to before a new starter is posted.
Updated: When reblogging to the starter blog, you must also tag your starter with ( #startersanswered chara1 chara2 chara3) to denote which starters you answered before posting your open.
If copying and pasting a starter to a new thread for tracking, you must comment on the starter that you replied. This is necessary so others know a starter has received replies.
New characters can post an introduction starter before replying to other open starters. This is the only exception to the rule.
Updated: On acceptance, you will be given a link to join our starter blog. Please post the starter on your own blog first, then reblog to the starter blog. You do not need to tag the starter blog when posting, and must reblog it yourself--the admins will not reblog it for you. Once you’ve finished reading the rule updates, send a message to the main and tell us your favorite ice cream flavor so we know you’ve read everything. When replying to an open, make sure to reblog from the source, not the starter blog.

River is considering a rule change for the 'get low, get kisses' game.   She attempted to claim a 3-way tie, but it's hard to deny that Mr. Giraffe has clearly won this round, though Scoots McGee is a close second.

ISU rule change on PCS
Let's call this an extensive personal comment...
I am too lazy to list exactly what has changed, but as you might have seen the PCS components being 5 before are reduced to 3. Namely IN (interpretation) and TR (transitions) are now gone.
This is what is left now:
Tumblr media
I think changing something in PCS is right, because the PCS are a huge joke how they are scored and used. I just think that again the descriptions are too vague and leave so much room for interpretation that in the end the rules won't be followed. But were they ever followed anyway?
And because rules weren't followed with 5 categories anyway I am not optimistic they will follow 3 categories, but I am also not as upset about it as some others, because if rules aren't followed why being upset they have changed? 🙃 Imo they could just put the skaters in real categories because no matter what some do, how I see it a skater is always judged within their corridor based on reputation, federation politics and passport. Some get high PCS for granted, some can work their ass off hard and still not receive any reward. So will it matter if there are 3 or 5? I don't think it will.
In theory it should have been possible to give skaters with mediocre skating skills a 10 in performance, but it never happened to have for example a 5 and a 10 in individual categories. So as long as you will get a 9 in all categories if you get a 9 in one category, what harm is done by reducing them to 3? That PCS are even less understandable valued? I don't think that's possible. It wasn't understandable before. I mean now at least they don't have to pretend to understand what transitions are used when it's muzzled together, so eventually it becomes easier to accept when some things aren't specified anymore 🙃
Some say now they cannot hold judges accountable for not following the rules within those PCS categories that were somewhat objectively countable like how many transitions, 1 foot skating etc. And it's true that now that these kind of "technical" stuff is now all muzzled into skating skills and not exclusively named it can become less of a thing for skaters to include into their programs, but let's be real on this: Skaters like some Russians (I don't do names today) did do many many transitions, but where they good or did most of them make sense for their programs? A spiral held for 1 second surely fits the criteria, but does it fit the program? Nah...and holding judges accountable? I can only laugh...as if judges ever were held accountable for not doing the PCS correctly. It's a dream, not a reality. Telling on SNS that judge A, B, C etc didn't do their job properly is hardly holding someone accountable. The effect is 0 I fear.
I think in the end it does not matter if there are 3 or 5 categories. As long as judges do however they like and give superb PCS to skaters not because of their skills but because of politics and/or high TES and reputation. A rule change is the least of the problems.
As long as judges are not better trained and really held accountable for their judging - not by fans, but by the ISU - any rule change will only be a new way for judges with an old habit attached.
I hope the new rule change at least make some judges read again what is actually in the rules. For the rest...well judging is what it is and it was never meant to be fair no matter what the rules say. Sad but true.
Last shout-out to the ppl claiming #figureskatingisdead...figure skating is never dead as long as ppl watch it. And rule changes within a sport are normal. And lastly just because a sport is not the way you want it, it doesn't make it dead. Surely there will he be fans who leave this sport, but there will be others who will start watching now and will find the old ways bad or less enjoyable. (Look I find most of the 80s and 90s comps quite boring and the rules there not slightly understandable, but it wasn't the time I started watching. I know ppl who would prefer the way 80s and 90s skating was. I don't. Same will happen now.)

HEADS UP, SOME CHANGES TO THE RULES!
Essentially, I will have to refuse anything longer than 40 seconds of video (with very rare case-by-case exceptions), to avoid having to subtitle "that whoooole thing" (for the record, I do this on my phone lol). I'm doing this in response to Subspace Dubbed Over since it may bring in people who want longer clips. I'm also doing this to keep the "out of context" element in tact. After all, this isn't just a clip side-blog - it's one where the clips are bizarre if you don't know the source material.
That and another clarification for recurring requesters - if you've requested a clip before with your username credited, the next time you send a request, I will keep that preference unless you say otherwise.
My ask box is always open, so if you want to see anything here, fire away!

STARTER RULE CHANGE:
Happy Monday, Islanders! We’ve got another rule change for you. This time our starter rules have changed. Please read the following updates thoroughly.
One starter every 24 hours is permitted.
Stagger your starters for multiple muses. Keep them at one per hour.
Updated: You may still use the tag ( theinstitutestarter ) but due to its unreliability, all open starters must be reblogged to the starter blog.
Updated: Closed starters do not need to be reblogged to the starter blog.
Updated: Do not post an open starter over any starter with less than three replies. Please remember to expand and check the notes to ensure a starter has been replied to at least three times before posting your own. Do not assume three notes means three replies.
Updated: If copying and pasting a starter to a new thread for tracking, you must comment on the starter that you replied. This is necessary both so others know a starter has received replies, and so we know it wasn’t posted over.
New characters can post an introduction starter even if there is a blank starter. This is the only exception to the rule.
Updated: On acceptance, you will be given a link to join our starter blog. Please post the starter on your own blog first, then reblog to the starter blog. You do not need to tag the starter blog when posting, and must reblog it yourself--the admins will not reblog it for you. Once you’ve finished reading the rule updates, send a message to the main and tell us your favorite animal so we know you’ve read everything. When replying to an open, make sure to reblog from the source, not the starter blog.
As always, please message us if you have any questions!
