As soon as the training centre opened, Vix was there, mainly because she couldn’t sleep. Every time she closed her eyes she relived the scene at the reaping, Sam handing over the baby to some unknown figure, and her heart felt like it was shattering inside her chest. Where was she now? Had they fed her? Did they hum her favourite song until she fell asleep? Did they use the special cream on the rash on her legs?
She had to get back, there was no other choice, so here she was, hours later, still fighting the same simulation, punching, kicking, over and over again until finally it fizzled, finally she’d killed it.
“No human has that much fucking energy” she mumbled through heavy breaths, wiping the sweat from her forehead.

Banshee had to talk to someone. She knew she did. This was a vast, slick building and she didn’t seem to know up from down. There was no dirt, no sunlight, no trees to mark how far she’d walked or when she should turn back. She’d been told something about a schedule on the train, but she didn’t remember much of it. Someone passed her in the hall, and she stopped, opening her mouth to say something. But the words caught in her throat. She didn’t know who this other person was, or what they might think of her voice, or how they might interpret her question. This was all life and death now, and not in the way she was used to. She said nothing, instead letting her jaw hang open a little as she stared at the person who passed.

Perhaps she finally understood it, now.
It hadn’t quite registered in her mind up until now, why some victor’s went straight for a bar once they had touched down in the Capitol. Now though, she was itching for a drink, if only that would ease her up a little. Her hands were still trembling, and after dropping a glass on the train, she’d stopped trying to pick up breakable things. She needed the tremble to go away, at least momentarily.
Her own name, in Allard’s voice, continued to spook around her mind. All the while the hushed gasps of the crowd in Thirteen sounded from every corner in the Tower. Jeannie was going insane now, she must’ve been.
“Anyone up for a drink?” She schooled her shaking voice, speaking to anyone at all familiar in the crowd around her.

Indy thought she’d get some privacy in a viewing room, one at the furthest reaches of one of the public floors, but she was learning quickly that there was no such thing in the Capitol. Everyone felt entitled to her space, and frankly, for a Tower so huge people were real fucking good at needing to occupy the same five square feet as she did, and it was getting irritating.  The door opened, and she snapped her notebook shut on instinct, immediately clamping her forearm down over the cover. “What the fuck do I have to do around here for a little peace and quiet?!” she shouted.

Knox was sitting alone at a random table that she had found. She sat there with her arms folded on the table and face resting in them. She had felt funny and the feeling wasn’t going away. This was her first time above ground. Her first time in twenty years that she had ever seen sunlight. It was needless to say her eyes were currently burning. So, she chose to keep them hidden. Then, she suddenly heard someone sit next to her. She tried her best to just ignore them. Maybe if she didn’t say anything, they would just simply go away.

Gatlin shifted uncomfortably under the fabric of his outfit. It was hard to focus on anything but the itching of the thick scars that covered his back and shoulders, or the countless eyes that were watching him. He settled his nose into a glass of whiskey on the rocks as someone moved into the space next to him. “If you’re gonna try to give me your friend’s number or use the word farm anywhere in this conversation then this spot’s taken,” he warned the other person without bothering to look up.

Her breath had caught in her throat the moment she’d stepped off the train. For the first time without handcuffs in almost a year and a half, Summer was subconsciously rubbing her wrists as she blinked at her surroundings. This was beyond the luxury she could’ve ever dreamed of, or could’ve ever wanted to dream of. She wasn’t hear for a vacation. Summer turned all around herself once in wonder, before proclaiming loudly, “This is different from prison.”

Carol didn’t want visits, but he also did not want to sit in front of the television all day, doing nothing, knowing nothing, having nobody by his side. “Did you bring me anything cool?” he asked, at this point past pleasantries. If someone walked in, they probably knew each other, and he didn’t remember. Good. He was ready to see where that took him. It was better than this white monotony.

Lara could hear the crickets for the short time that cut the image of the explosion, up until the Hunger Games commentators picked it up, speculating on the Games for the spare few minutes until the official launch. The destruction had been beautiful, even if chaotic and wrecking. She couldn’t pinpoint her own feelings on it. Her nails were clenched on her presidential work phone, waiting for the first instructions, but her eyes couldn’t leave the screen. Speaking to someone nearby, she gasped as the first of her words formed on her lips. “Imagine if the President...” came a muffled sigh of pure concern. “I can’t even say it.”

Holland had just left the sponsor room, having struck out after trying to talk to a few of these rich assholes. She’d even tried to be nice -- really nice! -- but no one wanted to entertain her requests. “Well this sucks, you got a cigarette?” she asked the nearest person.

"Well sucks for all the tributes who prided themselves on their great outdoor survival skills,” Slate said as he watched one of the screens. He then turned towards the nearest person. “Tell me something that has nothing to do with the Games? I’m bored of this already.” It wasn’t boredom, of course, but anxiety; and the awareness that by working for Lysander he had, in part, helped create this Arena.

Arriving in the Capitol was completely and utterly overwhelming for Vix. She had never left Six, never even left the small part of Six where she’d grown up, but most importantly, she’d never left her daughter, had never spent more than a few minutes away from her, so she had spent the majority of the train journey locked in the bathroom doing her best not to have a complete mental breakdown while trying to hide her emotions so that they wouldn’t give up on her before training even began.
Once off the train, Vix made a run for it, away from the team, leaving escorts and mentors behind so that she could smoke the entire packet of cigarettes she’d stuffed into her pocket in hopes of the nicotine calming her shaky hands enough so that she wouldn’t look like a trembling mess.
“If you say one word about my health, I’ll put this out on your forehead” she warned, when she heard footsteps behind her, hoping that her tone alone might send them on their way.

It started out with asking a couple people for a drink. Then when he realized the bar on Five’s floor was a little short, he went looking for more liquor, and invited more people when he was caught. And then other invitations were made, and the bar was suddenly very well stocked, and he was now receiving song requests after someone turned on the loud stereo. It was fun and distracting. He could easily forget the “FIVE” that had flashed across the screen just a couple hours ago, and focus instead on just having a good time. He deserved it one last time.
“Listen, I’ve had requests for like five songs I don’t know, but I’m working on it,” Mackerel told the person who approached as he was trying to scroll through the genre list on the stereo screen.

This is what Moxie had meant about the Games beginning to overreach, and she wasn’t sure if she could do this anymore. Her body held frozen, a hand instinctively clutched at the infant swaddled across her chest as she was unable to tear her eyes away from the carnage. She began to count softly to herself, if not for her own benefit – her eyes felt too wide, as she desperately scanned the screen to see if it was anyone she had known. Words like rebellion and uprising flit briefly through her mind when she hits ‘fifty-five’ on her count and the stream cuts outs.
The silence that encapsulates the room feels deafening, and she can’t stand it, breaking the silence voice feeling shriller than she would’ve preferred but asking the important question, “Do we know who was there?” She thinks through who could even potentially be there; Chip. Addy worked for Lysander. Slate, Slate was his assistant – would he have...?

“How long will this go on for?” Leander worriedly asked, as he watched the gravity levels in the Arena go haywire. Tributes were being flung in all directions, at some moments flying while at other points they were smacked back down to the ground as though something had held them up and decided to drop them again. Pepper and Hazel were still doing well enough, but no one could ever be sure when the Gamemaker influence was so dangerous. “Has anyone-” He looked down at his tablet, his tributes’ vitals brightly displayed on the screen. He’d began to speak, and promptly, the vitals for the girl from District One ceased showing any sign of life. “Oh. That’s- Well, that’s unfortunate.”

“I’ve been craving these since my Games,” Juniper said, a metal bowl from the edible plants station tucked unabashedly between her forearm and ribs. Her fingers were stained with the juice from the purple berries inside, something she hadn’t quite been able to find a match for after the jungle of the 126th Games. “Want one?”
