I don't wanna miss a thing
on ao3, Rated G - read it how you'd like, platonic or romantic rulie/peterpatterlina
Julie walks into the studio to the sound of Aerosmith blasting through the speakers. She laughs to herself, ever conflicted by the way her boys share her dad’s music taste but loving the nostalgia offered by dad rock.
What does surprise Julie is that the studio is nearly empty with Reggie hanging out alone sifting through a pile of CDs. He’s seldom the one seeking solitude, opting more often than not to hang out with Ray or Carlos inside.
“What’d you find?” she asks, making him jump in surprise. Julie giggles as a blush makes its way up his face.
He looks down at the pile in front of him and then back up at her, “Found some unmarked CDs in the loft. Thought I’d see what was on ‘em.” He smiles before continuing, “Haven’t been disappointed yet.”
Julie laughs as she settles in next to him, “No, I don’t imagine so.”
She leans into Reggie and he wraps his arm around her shoulders while they listen in silence for a moment.
“You probably know Aerosmith?” she asks as she tilts her head up to look at him.
“Of course, not this one though,” he replies, smiling down at her and planting a kiss on her forehead.
“I think you probably found Dad’s sappy collection. He made these CDs for Mami all the time when we were little. Probably have a tape collection hiding somewhere too.”
Just then, the song changes and Reggie’s eyes light up. “I know this one!” he cheers as he jumps up, dislodging Julie from his side. “Dance with me?” he asks, extending his hand out to her.
Julie sits herself back up and sends him a confused look, “You know how to dance?”
“Yeah!” Reggie enthuses as if it should be obvious and then his voice softens, “Mom was a big fan of swing. Some of our good times were dancing in the kitchen together. The boys never let me throw them around though.”
Julie laughs, “I’d pay good money to see that.”
He curls his fingers at her impatiently, “C’mon, dance with me!”
Julie sighs and stands up, taking his hand and letting him lead her around the space.
They carefully navigate around the furniture until Reggie gets frustrated and stops them to move the coffee table to the edge of the studio and takes her hand again.
He’s a bit rusty and Julie has never swing danced before but she does alright at following his lead, letting him spin her around and dip her at his whimsy, giggling as he does so. They only run into each other and she only steps on his toes a handful of times.
“I want to bop with you baby, all night long I want to be-bop with you baby till the break of dawn I want to bop with you baby all night I want to bop with you baby all night long” Reggie sings as they dance, halfway out of breath due to how quickly they’re moving.
They slow down as the song ends and when it transitions into the next one, he pulls her close into his chest, slow dancing to the new songs.
“I don’t know this one,” Reggie whispers into her hair.
Julie smiles up at him, “I do.”
She starts to sing along as they circle the space, “I’ll be your crying shoulder I'll be love's suicide And I'll be better when I'm older I'll be the greatest fan of your life.”
“It’s beautiful,” he says, holding her close.
Julie rests her head on his shoulder as she agrees, “Yeah. It is.”
They dance in silence for another verse and are interrupted when Luke poofs into the studio.
“Dancing without me?” he asks with a pout that they can hear.
Reggie and Julie both let out soft chuckles before opening their arms to him.
“Come dance with us,” Julie offers and he immediately settles in between them as they finish out the song.
“You should let Reggie dance with you,” Julie tells Luke as they pull apart.
Luke looks between them with wide eyes. “I’d love to dance with you, Reg,” he says.
“You’d swing dance with me?” Reggie asks, skepticism lacing his voice.
“I didn’t know I could,” Luke mutters and Reggie sighs.
“I spent years trying to get you to dance with me.”
“Yeah, but…” Luke tries to explain as he gestures between himself and Reggie.
“You deserve to be spun around and dipped too, Luke,” Julie smiles at him.
“What if he drops me?” Luke wonders, voice barely above a whisper.
“Then you fall,” Julie whispers back, placing Luke’s hand in Reggie’s. “You’ll survive.”
“Also, trust me,” Reggie adds with a grin of his own.
Reggie is relieved when the next song is another quick one that they can swing to though it’s another he doesn’t recognize. It doesn’t take him long to find the beat and Julie’s enjoying watching the two of them twirl around the space.
She muffles a laugh into her hand as Luke stumbles around, doing his best to keep the pace that Reggie’s setting.
Reggie decides to slow them to half time to get Luke used to the movement but also following.
Julie can’t help but sway and sing along as they find their groove and Luke sends love stricken looks her way as she does.
“I'm lookin' for a whole lot more Than a one night rodeo What can I do To prove to you I'm layin' it on the line I'll even get down on my knees.”
Reggie shakes Luke and gives him a pointed look when he gets his attention back, “If you pay attention, I’m less likely to drop you.”
“But Julie,” Luke whispers to him.
“I know. You can look at her after. I’m gonna dip you now.”
“Don’t drop me!” Luke exclaims and Reggie glares at him.
“Trust me,” Reggie utters out between clenched teeth before sending Luke out for another spin and then pulling him back and dipping him.
When he’s pulled back up to standing, Luke lets out the breath that he’d been holding.
“Fun, right?” Julie asks as she appears at their side.
Luke’s eyes are bright as he turns to her, a little bit breathless, “Yeah. We should do that more.” He reaches out for Reggie and puts his arm around his shoulders, pulling Reggie into his side. “Thanks, Reg. We should teach Alex and Willie.”
Julie’s eyes widen in excitement, “Yeah! We should. Good idea, Luke!”
Reggie’s face falls into a pout and Julie immediately notices.
“What’s wrong?” she asks.
“Odd numbers,” he explains.
“Oh. Well we can get Flynn. And Carrie. But that’s odd again. We can take turns! We’ll figure it out. There will be no Reggie-Wheeling on my watch! I promise,” Julie assures him and Reggie directs a small smile her way.
“Thanks, Jules,” Reggie says as he pulls her between him and Luke and they wrap her into a hug, both planting kisses to the top of her head before smiling at each other over her.

Why am I *blushing*? Rulie
Julie taps her pen against the page, testing the meter of her latest line.
Something feels off.
And it's not the meter. There's just…
It's something with the lyrics, maybe.
She had hoped that sitting out on the porch would do her some good. Luke had insisted on dragging them into the woods for a writing retreat, after all. Julie might as well make the most of it.
The breeze is nice, but it isn't really jogging anything. She closes her eyes.
It's not until she hears the solid thwack of an ax that her eyes fly open.
There, out in the yard, is Reggie, carefully placing logs and cleaving them open like he does it every day.
He's rolled his flannel sleeves up to elbows, exposing his forearms, and the rhythmic flex of muscle moving under pale skin is strangely mesmerizing.
There's something mesmerizing about the way he bites his lip, too, the intense concentration that he also pours into playing. She'd thought she was used to it, that she was immune to it, and yet…
What would it be like, to have all of that concentration to herself?
“Julie?”
The concern in Reggie’s voice cuts through her creeping thoughts like a knife. She jolts, quickly averting her eyes, and snaps her songbook shut.
“Sorry I spaced, I…I think I've been sitting in the sun for too long. I'm just…I'm gonna go grab some water.”
She makes her hasty retreat then, beelining not for the kitchen but the bathroom, which is blessedly empty.
Her reflection blushes back at her.
“God,” she murmurs, splashing her face. “Why am I blushing?”
Her lyrics flash through her mind.
I only see you when I'm dreaming / You always hide behind the sun
That's why she was stuck. It was her muse that was unclear, so she didn't know where else to go. But now…
Lots of little things make sense, in hindsight. He did creep up on her.
Until he split right through her conscience.
A knock at the door leaves her staring at herself again, still blushing and wide-eyed. Of course it's him again.
“Julie? Are you sure you're alright?”
She takes a deep breath, bracing herself, and reaches for the doorknob.
She needs to embrace her new reality sooner or later, after all, and she thinks that hammering that song out will help.
Besides…it's Reggie. He's too good to let something like this come between them or the band. He cares too much.
Maybe not in the way she does, but it's something.
Julie opens the door with a smile.

From @theamd426 Falling asleep in class/work for teenage Reggie and Julie please!!!!
Reggie sighed as he clocked in, donning his vest. Overnight shifts were always the worst, but they paid more, so he took them on occasion. At least this way he didn't have to deal with customers, all he had to do was restock the shelves and take inventory.
"Hey Reggie!" Julie called as she clocked in. "Ready for an exciting night of work?"
He shrugged but offered her a smile. "It's better now that you're here. I was terrified I would be stuck with Brett."
Julie wrinkled her nose at that. "Ew, no one should suffer like that." Then she giggled, and Reggie joined her. Brett was a useless layabout who usually smelled of weed and made terrible racist jokes, so no one wanted to work with him.
"At least I get half the music choices with you," Reggie said, elbowing her. They had similar tastes, and had a playlist for whenever they worked together, a mix of the stuff they both liked, since no one else was working, no one else could argue about the music.
"Well crank it up and we'll get started," Julie said with a hip check.
With the music blaring, they got to work; first tossing out the spoiled produce, and taking out anything expired from the coolers. Rotating stock so the older stuff went in front as they put the new in the rear.
Reggie started on the inventory as Julie filled the shelves, then they switched the next aisle over, taking turns as they went to make the night go faster. Chatting as they went, about their upcoming senior year, their co-workers, their friends, and plans for university. The two of them had been friends for awhile, and had come to work here by coincidence, making their bond even deeper.
Being good friends also made it easier to get through the long night shifts together, even if they finished long before they were due thanks to how well they worked together.
"Wanna go chill in the patio furniture before we start on the cleaning?" Reggie suggested.
"Sounds good," Julie agreed, covering a yawn as they went. "Sorry, I should have napped this afternoon but Flynn was having relationship drama and best friend duties trumped my need for sleep."
"Ugh tell me about it, I have to listen to Alex whine about his ginormous crush on Willie more than I don't," Reggie replied. "However my nap plans got waylaid by Luke and his new bridge for Destination Nowhere."
"Think we'd get in trouble for sneaking in a snooze?" Julie asked as they lounged on the patio furniture.
"As long as we wake up in time to wipe the cameras," Reggie said. "Though you know Kenneth doesn't care as long as everything gets done."
"I'll set an alarm," Julie said, taking out her phone, yawning again. Reggie already had his eyes closed but murmured his consent.
This wasn't the first time they had done this-though they usually did so in the staff room where the cameras weren't, but like Reggie said, their manager wasn't a big harper for the rules given they had caught him napping amongst the holiday blow ups more than once.
They never napped long-half an hour at most, but it was a much needed refresher. Even if they were both a bit groggy when Julie's alarm blared.
"Alright, I'm up, I'm up," Reggie protested, rubbing his eyes.
"Five more minutes," Julie moaned.
"No way Molina, we gotta get the cleaning done then I propose we clock out early and go back to yours for a lengthy snooze," Reggie proposed.
"Why my house?" Julie asked as she stretched.
"You have a million couches and your family will let us sleep, unlike mine," Reggie replied.
"Fair enough," Julie said. "Let's get too, I can hear my bed calling my name."
Reggie nodded and they went back to work, leaving as soon as it was done and getting a quality amount of sleep once back at the Molina house.
Of course, they also forgot to wipe the cameras, and the next shift they were on, there was a screenshot of them snoozing printed out in the break room for them-surrounded by a big red heart and Kenneth's name signed underneath it. They both blushed, but decided that next time they caught him cuddling the stuffed animals, they were definitely getting proof as revenge.
Even if he was right about the heart by the end of the summer.

with every single beat of my heart Fandom: Julie and the Phantoms, Reggie/Julie (and some bonus Reggie & Ray, because I am who I am as a person), ~4,100 Authors: @breakaway71 & @bananakarenina Rating: PG Summary: After twenty-seven years as ghosts, they've been given a second chance. Reggie is determined not to take it for granted. But when Julie starts avoiding him, all he can think is that he must have done something wrong. He needs to find a way to fix it before it ruins everything. Notes: This was a really fun thing @bananakarenina let me tackle when she had a block of dialogue she didn't have any direction for. I had a TON of fun collaborating with her on this, and I love that my first ever collaboration was with one of my most favorite writers. :')

Unrequited love prompts: “I keep telling my heart not to want you, but it’s not that easy.” for Rulie
uh so this prompt has been sitting in my inbox for years at this point
i had some dialogue written around the prompt line and literally nothing else; the world would just not crystallize around the dialogue
and one day i was talking with @breakaway71 after helping her out with something and i was like WAIT. WAIT I KNOW EXACTLY WHO CAN FLESH OUT THIS DIALOGUE
and i was RIGHT
it is canon-adjacent, slightly-angsty rulie goodness, with bonus ray & carlos. let me stress to you that i contributed the initial dialogue, some spacing/formatting edits, and a few new lines at the end, and that is IT. she did the heavy lifting but i think the end result is a beautiful blend of our styles!

When they wrap their hand around your waist protectively because it's just an instinct by now + rulie 👀👀
Julie regrets not following Flynn.
She looks around with forced calm, weaving through the people on the dance floor, and pretends to admire the neon lights that frame the bar as she gets near.
People always joke about why women flock to the bathroom in groups…this.
The creep closing in on her is fucking why.
But the music they've been playing is so good, and she hadn't wanted to miss a second. Plus, Alex and Willie had been right behind her…until they simply weren't.
She spots Reggie at the end of the bar and makes a beeline for him. He's playing on his phone and doesn't see her, so…
She calls out, "Baby! There you are!"
It isn't the first time she's had to do this, but he still flushes a little when he turns to her, letting his phone clatter onto the bar.
He grins and gets up, gently tugging her into a hug by wrapping his arms around her waist. That's nothing new, either…
Literally in any way at all…
But her giggle is a little too genuine.
She can tell when he's clocked the creep; his jaw ticks. His grin never falters, though.
He lets his voice carry a little louder than necessary over the din of the bar.
"Hey, sweetheart. Are you having fun?"
And if they're upping the ante…
"I was…" She pouts, tangling her fingers in his necklace and biting down on a smile as his eyes get a little wide. "But I miss you."
He huffs a laugh as she keeps playing with his necklace. "I'm right here, Jules."
One of his hands comes up to brush her curls out of her face, lingering on the slope of her jaw, and she can't help it. Something about the rasp of his skin on hers and the use of a real nickname…
Her fingers falter. She shivers.
That makes him smirk, just for a second.
Then he presses his lips to her forehead with such slow tenderness that it knocks her sideways. Julie's eyes flutter shut.
"But for the record," he says, for her and her alone, "I missed you, too."
She swallows, then silently concedes.
"Is…is he gone?"
Reggie hums. "Yeah. Yeah, I think so."
Their embrace slowly unravels, but she sticks by him for the rest of the evening, and he's always casually touching her. Partially because it's normal for them, but she knows it's also out of understanding.
He knows that she finds it reassuring.
That thoughtfulness has never made her swoon, before, but she's still sideways. Everything he does makes her swoon.
Flynn notices; she sends Julie several side-eyes. Literally and in text form.
No one else seems to sense the shift, and Julie isn't really sure if that's lucky or not.
As Reggie plays with her fingers on the table, engrossed in conversation as he is, and she suppresses another shiver…
She's starting to lean towards not.

"I can't wait." / rulie
“Now, Mija, are you sure you are going to be ok?”
Julie tries to not look too guilty as her Dad finishes loading his and Carlos’s bags into the car. The two of them off to a weekend baseball showcase that Carlos was invited to.
“Sorry, I have this history paper due next week and it’s worth, like 40% of my grade.” She says, pinching her arm behind her back to keep from biting her lip. Purposefully leaving out she had actually finished that paper last weekend.
“Oh, right.” Her Dad says with a sigh, thankfully not noticing the knowing look Carlos is shooting her way. “Well, I’ll be sure to call you as soon as we get checked into the hotel to check on you and give you a good contact number if you need to get a hold of me.”
“Sounds like a plan.” She says, trying to get him on the road before he can possibly start thinking about calling her Aunt again. Any other weekend Julie wouldn’t have minded but she’d already come up with plans of her own and her Aunt would only complicate things.
Thankfully, Carlos’ impatience is her saving grace, pulling their Dad to the car with comments about only so much daylight. Julie waves them off from the porch, waiting til the very last moment she can see the car before running back inside.
She practically sprints to the phone, quickly dialing. The handful of rings it takes for anyone to answer gives her very little time to catch her breath.
“Peters residence.”
“Reggie, hi!”
“Julie!” She can practically feel his sunshine bright smile through the speaker. Always managing to calm the anxieties of her heart. “What’s up?”
She giggles into the handset, suddenly second guessing herself. What if he’s already got plans?
“Julie?”
She swallows, trying to stave off the dryness taking over her mouth and steels herself before unceremoniously blurting. “I was wondering if you wanted to come over?”
“Sure, I’d love to.” He quickly says before groaning, “Oh wait, I’ve got band practice with the guys in like 20 minutes.”
“Well, maybe you can come after?” She says fingers tangling into the phone cord.
“I don’t know, Luke’s been in one of his moods lately so practice might run a bit long. Would your Dad be okay with me potentially stopping by that late?”
She barely manages to bite back her laugh at his concern. Like he hasn’t randomly stopped by her house late at night before, climbing in through her back window to spend time with her. This is however the perfect segue to bring up her plan with him. “Actually, my Dad and Carlos both just left for the weekend. So it’s just me.”
“Oh.” He says and she holds her breath for the beat before he seems to register the full implications of everything she’s said thus far. “Oh, really?”
“Yes, I was actually kind of hoping you might want to stay over for the night?”
“Oh god, yes.” He’s quick to say, and she’s giggling with a whole new set of nerves now. “I promise, as soon as practice is done, I will head straight over.”
“I can’t wait.” She breathes out before he has to end the call in order to get to practice on time.
Either Luke was in a better mood than expected or Reggie had managed to convince them to keep practice shorter because it’s barely been a couple hours before he’s showing up at her doorstep. Smile bright across his face and a handful of fresh daisies they nearly forget to put in water.

For the first kiss prompts, "I'm not sure how to..." "Just follow my lead." and Rulie?
Their breathing is loud in the small room.
It's dark, the air still reverberating with the slammed door, and the musty smell of abandoned objects.
Julie reaches up and flails her hand until she finds the old fashioned chain and with a click a faded golden glow washes over them.
It's dim, the bulb as dusty as the rest of the room.
She shuffles awkwardly, trying not to kick anything in the limited clear area. She doesn't want to look up, her heart in her throat. Is it just her imagination or is her heart beating loud enough to fill the silence? Her breath sounds ragged even to her own ears.
But there's only so long she can avoid acknowledging the situation. It's ridiculous. It's just a game.
She swallows, and her throat clicks.
"So…" she begins, ready to crack a joke. It's just Reggie, for goodness' sake. Her fingers shake, so she stuffs them in the front pockets of her jeans, where they're squeezed by the fitted fabric.
She finally looks up and freezes. His bright eyes are wide, jaw tight enough to snap. The tendons in his neck stand out, taut.
"Reg? Are you okay?"
He swallows, and she watches his Adam's apple bob. His lips are pale. Pressed thin.
She reaches out, drops her hand when he flinches.
"Is it—are you—" she closes her eyes for a moment and breathes. His tension fills the air like gas, creeping into her mouth and nose, filling her lungs. "Is it the small space?"
He shakes his head, a tight jerk that dislodges a curl of hair to lay carelessly across his forehead.
She feels like a stranger, like she doesn't know this person standing in front of her, his fists balled tight. Her mind is oddly blank, as if their history doesn't exist; she doesn't know how to fix this.
Reggie looks away, and the dim light falls on his hair, coloring strands bronze and gold, deepening the shadows beneath. It drips down his forehead, the slope of his nose, coasts over the arch of his cheekbone. Pools in the dip of his clavicle.
"I'm not sure how to..."
Oh.
She wants to tell him that they don't have to do anything. It's just them. It's just a stupid game. Her voice doesn't make it past her throat.
She wants to be the one to reassure him.
But it's not as if she has that much experience. Bad, fumbling kisses with people who are just as nervous as she is, or too enthusiastic.
"Just follow my lead."
Her voice, when it comes, is so much more confident than she feels. But she can do this. She can do this right.
She steps towards him, slow. He tenses again—more—his shoulders a fraction higher than a moment ago, his jaw almost creaking under the pressure.
She reaches out, again, but doesn't let his aborted retreat stop her. Slides a gentle hand from his shoulder to his wrist; a pause to feel his pulse fluttering hummingbird-fast against her fingertips. Works her fingers between his until they ease, just a little.
His grip is so tight her fingers begin to lose feeling.
She steps closer anyway, lets the fingers of her free hand dance along the line of his jaw until he releases a breath.
"Let me," she murmurs, just for them. His eyes meet hers, and they're still so wide, painfully bright, painfully green in the low light. Illuminated from within.
She doesn't give him time to answer; doesn't give herself time to second guess her actions. She slips her fingers onto the soft skin beneath his ear, jutting bone nestled perfectly in her palm, and brings their mouths together.
It's nothing, at first. A bare press of their lips. It's so quiet that the rasp of his chapped lips against hers is perfectly audible. He doesn't move, barely breathes.
Her fingers curl slightly, drag against that hidden tract of unseen skin under his earlobe, and his breath rushes out of him in a huff, warm and sweet against her lips.
She's pulling him closer before her brain can catch up. His fingers free hers, allowing her to wrap her arm around him, her suddenly tingling fingers fitting perfectly in the dip of his lower back.
She shivers when his hands hesitantly cup her hips, more heat than pressure.
As if it's the hundredth time they've done this, rather than the first, they tilt their heads, their mouths meeting perfectly.
It's so utterly outside of her previous experiences that she nearly pulls away, a question worrying at the back of her mind. Was he really…?
Then he presses forward just a little too fast, a little too hard, his fingers too tight on her hips. Their lips mash together between their teeth, his nose flattened uncomfortably against hers and it melts away.
She tilts his head to a better position with the slightest pressure to the base of his skull, and takes his plump lower lip between hers. She can taste the chemical sweetness of the soda he'd been mainlining all night.
He holds himself still, mouth soft; lets her kiss him gently, sweetly. His only action is the slightest clench and release of his fingers on her hips, the involuntary rise and fall of his chest adding another quiet sound to the silence of the room as their clothes rub together with the small movement.
She should keep it this soft, this slow, but she's seized by an unavoidable need. Her fingers tangle in his hair, holding him tight, her mouth coaxing his to open. Their tongues meet in a shiver of delight that reverberates between them.
She loses herself in Reggie's mouth, in the tentative way his lips move, his tongue shyly curling around hers.
A sudden pounding startles them apart, and Reggie kicks something that rolls with a metallic clang. His chest is heaving, slick red lips parted with his panting breaths.
"Times up!"
They stare at each other, and Julie's mind whirrs uselessly, unable to formulate words.
"Are you decent?" another voice asks slyly. Several voices giggle and whisper.
Reggie clearly his throat, runs his hands down his chest and stomach, tugs at his shirt. He strides to the door and flings it open.
"Yes, yes, very funny," he says, shoving his hair back from his face. The air from the larger room outside seems too cold on Julie's skin, and she wraps her arms around herself, fingers pinching at the sensitive skin of her upper arms.
She wants to shut the door behind him, turn off the light, sit in the dark until she feels normal again.
Reggie doesn't look back.
