[FFXV] Ravus & Luna key scenes: Japanese Translation Pt. 2

Part 1 where I translated Ravus & Luna’s conversation in Altissia can be accessed here. My translation of Noctis & Luna’s farewell can be accessed here. Disclaimer: These translations and any interpretations made are entirely my own. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ravus & Luna in Tenebrae: sylleblossom field Ravus:  ルナフレーナ、もう諦めろ。ノクティスは王にはなれない。 Runafurena, mou akiramero. Nokutisu wa ou ni wa narenai. “Cease this at once, Lunafreya. Noctis cannot become king.”

Luna: どうして、そんなことを言うのです？他に道などありません。 Doushite, sonna koto wo iu no desu? Hoka ni michi nado arimasen. “How can you say such a thing? There is no other way.” Ravus: これ以上はおまえが命を落とすぞ！ Kore ijou wa omae ga inochi wo otosuzo! “At this rate you will die!” Luna:   分かってます！後悔は。。。ないんです。 ただ、すぐ近くで声を聞きたかった。昔みたいに笑って、その手に触れて。。。 Wakattemasu! Koukai wa...nain desu. Tada, sugu chikaku de koe wo kikitakatta. Mukashi mitai ni waratte, sono te ni furete... “I know! I...have no regrets. Only, I wish that I could hear his voice right by his side. To laugh as we did long ago, to feel his touch once more...” Noctis:  ルーナ？ なんだよ。。。やっぱ辛かったのかよ。 聞いてやれなくて、ゴメン。 Runa? Nandayo...Yappa tsurakatta no kayo. Kiite yarenakute, gomen. “Luna?  What is this...It really was painful, wasn’t it?  I’m sorry that I couldn’t be there for you.” Translation Notes: 1. “Sugu chikaku de” (すぐ近くで) can be translated more literally as “right nearby.” I feel that the use of “sugu,” which can also mean “immediately, directly, without difficulty” has a slightly stronger meaning in Japanese that can only be conveyed as “by his side” in English - the Japanese really emphasises the closeness. It’s a little hard to explain but hopefully those of you who know Japanese know what I’m trying to get at! 2. “Sono te ni furete” (その手に触れて) means “to be touched by that/his hand.” I’ve tried to make my translation of this line a little more poetic, but regardless, I think this line is really significant given what was shown in the secret ending. Luna’s wish was granted and I think this line makes the secret ending all the more emotional and bittersweet. 3. Noctis’ line after seeing Luna’s spirit “Nandayo...Yappa tsurakatta no kayo” ( なんだよ。。。やっぱ辛かったのかよ) is full of so many meanings that are quite difficult to capture in English. First off, the way Noctis speaks in Japanese is quite gruff & far less formal in comparison to Luna. When he says “Nandayo,” this can also be translated as “What the hell?” and it captures Noctis’ frustration towards himself quite clearly. Next, “yappa” is a shortened form of “yappari” (やっぱり) and means “As expected/I knew it.” Noctis’ use of this phrase seems to suggest that he knew Luna was suffering more than she may have let on, which would explain the preceding line that showed his frustration. 4. “Kiite yarenakute, gomen” (聞いてやれなくて、ゴメン) is also a difficult line to translate. In a more literal sense, it can mean something along the lines of “I’m sorry for not being able to listen to your troubles,” the “troubles” being implied. Because the Japanese language tends to omit the main subject of a sentence, it’s difficult to determine what exactly is being referred to so “troubles” seems the most likely referent. Overall, the essence of this line is that Luna was probably struggling with many things that she either hinted at or omitted all together during her exchanges with Noctis and he is upset that he wasn’t able to be there to support her when she needed it most. 5. “...gomen” (”I’m sorry”). The choice of script for Noctis’ apology in Japanese is quite imporant. Hiragana is the basic alphabet and is what would normally be used to write this apology (ごめん). However, another script known as katakana has been used instead to emphasise Noctis’ emotions (ゴメン) much in the same way as we would use bold, italics and/or capital letters in languages that use the alphabet.

[FFXV] Ravus & Luna key scenes: Japanese Translation Pt. 1

It was interesting to see how different the interactions between Luna & Ravus were compared to the game & Kingsglaive. In the game, they seem certainly much closer compared to the film. I hope their relationship will be explored a little more in upcoming DLC! The official English translations for Ravus & Luna’s scenes don’t deviate too much from the Japanese but there are a few lines that I think are quite enlightening. Disclaimer: These translations and any interpretations made are entirely my own. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ravus & Luna’s conversation in Altissia Luna:   この指輪をノクティス様へ、わたしの代わりに　どうか。。。 Kono yubiwa wo Nokutisu-sama he, watashi no kawari ni douka... “I beg of you....Please pass on the ring to Noctis on my behalf.” 身体が思うように動かないのです。 Karada ga omou youni ugokanai no desu. “My body no longer moves as I wish it to.”  Ravus: それを受け取ることはできない。 Sore wo uketoru koto wa dekinai. “I cannot accept that.” おまえが自分で渡すんだ。指輪を渡し、王にその自覚をさせるまでが おまえの使命だ。倒れてはならない。 Omae wa jibun de watasun da. Yubiwa wo watashi, ou ni sono jikaku wo saseru made ga omae no shimei da. Taorete wa naranai. “You will give him the ring yourself. Until the king awakens, it is your mission to see to it that he is given the ring - you must not fall.” Luna:   でももう、わたしの力は。。。 Demo mou, watashi no chikara wa... “But already, my strength is...” Ravus: 果たせ、ルナフレーナ。ひとりの人間としてノクティスに会い、おまえの想いと覚悟を伝えろ。 Hatase, Runafurena. Hitori no ningen toshite Nokutisu ni ai, omae no omoi to kakugo wo tsutaero. “See to it, Lunafreya - not as the Oracle but as a person. Meet with Noctis and tell him of what lies in your heart, show him your resolve.”   Translation Note: 1. “Hatasu” (果たす) is the verb that Ravus uses in the last line and means “to achieve, carry out, fulfill.��� He is using the imperative version of this verb to urge Luna to not give up and carry out her duty. The literal translations for this verb didn’t seem to work as well poetically so I chose “see to it” instead. 2. I have added “not as the Oracle” to further capture the meaning of what Ravus said. In a more literal translation, when he says “Hitori no ningen toshite,” this can be directly translated as “as a single human being.” While it may seem at odds with what he said earlier about Luna fulfilling her duty, here it appears, at least to me, that he is also reminding Luna that she is not doing what she is simply because she is the Oracle and must support the king - she is an individual who has decided to support someone she cares deeply about. I think this particular line is especially enlightening as it not only shows how much Ravus cares about Luna, but also shows how important he feels it is to remind her that she is not solely defined by her duty.
