Mini prompt: Wen Ruohan DIDN'T murder Lao Nie, someone else did
“You’re going to help me, right?”
Wen Ruohan’s head shot up – he hadn’t heard anyone approaching his quarters, nor had he thought anyone would be stupid enough to do so. Encroaching on his grief was a death sentence to all, he’d made that very clear.
Well, he’d made it clear to his own people. The person standing there right now wasn’t his people.
And…he supposed that of all the people who might come to bother him as he mourned the death of one of his very last good friends, the dead man’s eldest son and heir was probably the most justified.
“Nie Mingjue,” he said, inclining his head, and Nie Mingjue saluted in return. His eyes were red, and he was – really quite startlingly tall, come to look at him. Wen Ruohan had never had much interest in children, and his own interest in Lao Nie rather precluded him from being in any way inclined to associate with the children of the women he’d (however briefly) lost Lao Nie to, so they’d never spent a great deal of time together. He’d only seen him from a distance, or heard about how he’d defeated his own sons in some feat or another, which happened with annoying regularity. “I haven’t had the chance to offer you my condolences.”
He probably should have. Lao Nie had cared a great deal about his sons, and about his sect; he would have wanted Wen Ruohan to reach out.
Pity he was dead, and Wen Ruohan selfish as he’d ever been. Without someone to remind him of the good he ought to do, it was no surprise that he’d instinctively retreat back into his worst habits…
“I don’t need your condolences,” Nie Mingjue said. “I need your help.”
Wen Ruohan frowned. “With what?”
“With finding the person who did it.”
Wen Ruohan straightened up abruptly. “It wasn’t natural? I mean – that is – your family…”
“I know my family history for qi deviations. This wasn’t that,” Nie Mingjue said grimly. “This was deliberate.”
Wen Ruohan felt the familiar warmth of rage in his belly – and a feeling, almost, of relief, at having a sense of purpose once more.
“In that case, I would be more than happy to help,” he said silkily, standing up and crossing the room, offering Nie Mingjue a hand. “My Wen sect doesn’t ally itself with others, but I think, in this particular instances, I can make an exception. Don’t you agree?”
“I do,” Nie Mingjue said, and accepted his hand, only to jump as if he’d been suddenly shocked by lightning, with Wen Ruohan only managing to stay on the ground himself through years of hiding his reaction to things. “What was that?”
Wen Ruohan stared down at where he was touching Nie Mingjue for – now that he thought of it – the first time ever.
“Our cultivations are unusually compatible,” he murmured. “Even…exceptionally compatible.”
“Oh,” Nie Mingjue said, blinking. “Well, that’s – helpful, I guess? Good to know.”
It was very good to know. Cultivating together in any way, whether through a mutual spar or meditation, would have an accelerating effect for both of them, and given Wen Ruohan’s already-high levels of cultivation, that was an exceedingly rare effect for him to find. And if they did more than that – if, for instance, they engaged in dual cultivation…
Wen Ruohan smiled, his old dreams of divinity dancing right before his eyes.
“You know, it’s really only a tradition that my Wen sect doesn’t make alliances,” he purred. “Traditions can be broken. Let’s see how this revenge quest goes – and maybe then we can see if we should perhaps broker something…a little more permanent. Wouldn’t that be nice?”

In which Nie Mingjue discovers that Wen Ruohan isn't bad, he's just been living on a different planet
(For reference: five coins could buy a beautifully horrific portrait of the Yiling Patriarch)
Wen Chao was the one who told Wen Ruohan it was 100 coins in the first place so he could spend the change on his girlfriend
Wen Xu thinks Wen Ruohan is wrong about a 100-coins banana, but he never looks at prices when shopping and always tells the seller to keep the receipt, so he doesn't know enough about market prices to dispute it
Meng Yao is like, "...Yes, it's 100 coins," and then adds the excess amount into his 5 Year Plan™ piggy bank
Jin Guangshan is also like, "...Yes, it's 100 coins," and outwardly pretends like he doesn't know any better when he really, really does and has to discreetly drink the vinegar
Jiang Fengmian just kind of shrugs his shoulders, "Sure."
Madam Jin and Madam Yu are hanging out just like 😑🍷🍷😑 and thinking maybe money can buy happiness if Wen Ruohan can be that oblivious and maybe they should have set their sights on becoming Madam Wen instead
Lan Xichen nods along in agreement because he is another person who has never set foot in a market (Meng Yao's 5 Year Plan™ is starting off great)
Nie Huaisang has no idea because he only eats fruits and vegetables when someone else puts them on the table
Lazy edit bonus because Wen Ruohan deserves a cupcake:

My piece for the reverse bigbang! Will add the link to the piece when its up!
Edit: the fic is up!!
“You really are beautiful.” Wen Ruohan pulled the veil fully off and tossed it aside, it fluttered like a ghost over his shoulder as it fell to the floor. “Wife.”
He hissed.
It was only a light grip on his chin, but Nie Mingjue was frozen as Wen Ruohan’s face drew closer and closer, his handsome face blocking out everything else. The smell of wood smoke filled Nie Mingjue’s nose and mouth.
Flinching, he turned his face away.

Historical bookstore au? With ruojue if you still write that, please! 😊
Historical bookstore~~
(yeah, I still write and love them to bits, my mind just drift from one thing to another with the worst timing... I wanna sob)
Not sure about what could be considered historical, but I've read that can involve pirates, so hopefully you won't mind it? (I mean, it's already historical in canon so... Weird.)
During the many and long travels, the qishan, a huge ship, feared all over the seas and surrounded by mystery and fear, with a gold Phoenix flying in front of a red sun as a flag, stops in a little harbor with no particular reasons, the crew and the captain simply wanted to step down for a day or two.
Captain Wen finds a tiny bookstore in an alleyway. He doesn't really care for books, too busy with commanding the ship and his secret search for a mythical stone called Yin Metal, but it's such a little place, and perhaps he can find some ancient books or maps there.
It smell like ancient books too, he realizes when stepping inside, expecting probably an old man to welcome him or something. Definitely not the young one who very slowly lower a saber pointed at him.
"trying to scare clients?" not that wen ruohan is scared, and the sword looks polished and fine enough.
"not expecting clients. People keep away from here."
No wonder, if the welcome is a huge sword at their throat, wen ruohan is not "people"
He starts looking around, scavenging between dusty books and paper, not finding anything for himself worth of buying but grabbing a medical textbook for wen Qing, just because now it seemed unpolite, even for a pirate to leave empty handed.
"you have a ship, right?"
The young man asks when he's almost at the door. Yes, he has a ship indeed, and the best ship too.
"I'm looking for my brother. He sailed off, one day, and never returned."
"and what will I have in return for taking you on my ship?"
He didn't step inside to do charity, in truth he doesn't know why he stepped inside the bookstore, he felt... Like a pull.
"it's just a rock - the young man tosses him a sachet and indeed there's a rock inside, shining red and pulsing. - people say it gives incredible powers to the one wielding it. I don't care for power. I'm just looking for my brother."
Wen ruohan brings him on the qishan, keeps nie mingjue, that's how he introduced himself, close, let him keep the big saber of his close too, and off they sail again, letting the glowing rock guide them, finally with a path toward his objective.
He wasn't supposed to fall in love with the obviously not pirate, but he's a damn good fighter, and good looking too.
And perhaps finding the yin metal pass becomes less important, or perhaps finding huaisang can take a little longer, mingjue likes the sea, he likes the fights, it almost feels like that's the place he's supposed to be instead of the one old, dusty bookstore in a gods forgotten harbor.
Perhaps the sea had always called for him, perhaps the Phoenix over a red sun is not the omen people in the taverns whisper about in fear, And perhaps that little rock he thought nothing for his whole life, ever since his father left it to him, holds more power he ever realized. Perhaps sharing that power with the qishan captain is not that bad.
For sure sharing a bed is not bad at all.

There’s only one pair of eyes that matters to Nie Mingjue. Those scarlet orbs follow his every move as he danced across the stage.
Good
The rest of the sect leaders and their heirs and/or disciples do not matter. All that matters is the pair of eyes of Sect Leader Wen.
This is inspired by ebonykain’s post, kitsune1818’s art, and this video.
In this AU, Dad Nie died earlier than in canon (both Nie kids’ mothers died during childbirth). How he died, he either was killed during a night hunt by a powerful monster or yao, or was killed by Wen Ruohan or someone else. The Wens attacked while the Nie sect was in chaos as its heirs were still too young. Only a 10-year old NMJ and 4-year old NHS escaped and they ended up in a brothel.
NMJ begged to stay for a little bit in the brothel for a little rest. The owner of the brothel, a woman in her 30’s, told them they could stay as long as they like as long as NMJ worked there. All he had to do was clean, run some errands, cook, simple tasks like those. Until 3 years later.
A customer mistook NMJ as a prostitute and asked for his services. That gave the owner an idea. The young boy is pretty but doesn’t want to be touched. The owner knows some customers ogle at the boy. The boy has good footwork. Why not make him a dancer? The idea was proposed and she found amusement on the boy sputtering reasons until she added that his pay will increase and with that, he can buy more things his brother wants. The owner knows that this boy, A-Jue as he introduced himself, will do anything to make sure his brother is comfortable. A-Jue agreed the next day. Training him to dance starts now.
NMJ trains his golden core as much as he can. He writes down his sect’s ideals, laws, motto etc. as much as he can remember. He reminds himself his name and Huaisang’s name. They are Nie. They are from the Nie clan. He just can’t use it at the moment. NMJ is afraid he might forget. He does the Nie braids on NHS only and teaches him how to do it. His little brother braids his hair sometimes.
When the woman proposed him the idea to be a dancer, NMJ was reluctant. But increase pay means NHS can finally indulge in his luxuries, then he’ll take it (his brother enjoys painting and he loves fans. He also seems to get along with the prostitutes in the brothel. Did they teach him how to apply make-up? Huaisang has been asking to use him as his model).
NMJ started training in dancing. His (short) saber practice in the past coming in handy. Whether he likes it or not, he started focusing his powerful golden core to his physical appearance. Two years later he made his public appearance.
He was a success.
Since then, NMJ became a known dancer. It started in that small area until it spread wider and wider. When NMJ dances, he covers his face with a veil and it gets people curious on what he looks like but they’ll never see. NMJ doesn’t want them to see. The owner was reluctant at first but she then noticed the appeal of having his face covered. His eyes are appealing enough.
And that’s all I have. I imagine the reason why NMJ would be able to get close to WRH is because the Wen or Jin sect is hosting something and NMJ was hired to be the entertainer. He took it because of (1) good pay and (2) the opportunity to finally get his revenge for his sect and father.
I can imagine Huaisang as the one who is doing NMJ’s make-up, designing and choosing his clothes, plans his routine (they change it up), etc. (NHS also formed a golden core but as weak and late as canon. Looking for REAL cultivator books are expensive, and NHS doesn’t seem to be interested much to NMJ’s horror).

Hi! Hope you're having a good day! It's been a long time and sure MDZS hype has declined generally but I just wanted to let you know that I still love Ruojue. I love my GOAT AlphaXAlpha ship! If you ever release more content I'll be over the moon to read them.
Right, I'm off to read your Heliocentric masterpiece again 🥰
Sometimes I feel like I lurk on my own blog because it has been a long time and hello!! It's funny to think about but I'm the same: ruojue is still the ship I ship. No other ship has competed with my desire to write for it even after all this time and there are still so many stories left unexplored! A Major Problem(TM) in my personal life has finally been resolved so maybe there will be more content when the dust settles!
Oh my though, I need to get back to Heliocentric so I can slap a fancy Completed on that bad boy. (The guilt of having left you hanging with that dramatic moment is real lmao.) What I had personally dubbed 'part 1' is all posted and I'm embarrassed to admit how often I keep thinking about part 2, but at least I definitely know how the story goes and where to pick up from...
Calling it a masterpiece is so nice though, you're so nice, Anon, thank you! May there be more ruojue in the world for us in 2024!

What made you start shipping ruojue?
I took time to study Wen Ruohan in the novel for a fic and my brain was like, you know what, Nie Mingjue was so loud and vocal about his disdain and/or disapproval for Jin Guangyao and Jin Guangshan and Xue Yang and even Wen Qing, but he's so weirdly silent and roundabout when it comes to blaming Wen Ruohan for literally anything??
Like nothing happens and nothing is said between them in the Sun Palace before Meng Yao walks in to kick-start the circus, but once it's all over we get this scene:
Nie Mingjue, "Wen Ruohan has died?" Meng Yao seemed as if his footing had slipped. He responded with a trembling voice, "He has probably… died." He was also carrying something in his hand. Nie Mingjue spoke in a low tone, "Hand me the saber." Wei Wuxian couldn't see Meng Yao's expression. He could only hear the saddened smile from his voice, "Sect Leader Nie, at such a point in time, just please don't keep on thinking about cutting me up with your saber…" Nie Mingjue was silent for a moment. Having refocused his strength, he snatched the saber. Even though Meng Yao was agile, pure power could subdue all skill. With the saber taken, he immediately leaped to the side, "Sect Leader Nie, you're still injured." Saber in hand, Nie Mingjue spoke coldly, "You killed them." The cultivators who were held captive alongside Nie Mingjue. Meng Yao, "Sect Leader Nie, you should understand. In that sort of situation… I had no choice." What Nie Mingjue hated the most were such irresponsible words. Fuming, he lunged with his saber, "You had no choice? Whether or not to do it was up to you, and so was whether or not to kill them!" (ch. 49, ERT)
My smooth little brain was like, couldn't this also be interpreted as Nie Mingjue including Wen Ruohan in the murdered collective? Is it possible he's also mad on Wen Ruohan's behalf for being betrayed like Nie Mingjue himself was betrayed by Meng Yao??
Aren't Nie Mingjue and Wen Ruohan actually a little more alike than they are different? Wen Ruohan's last words (which were to Meng Yao) were, "Do as you please," and we see here how Nie Mingjue doesn't even drag Wen Ruohan into the blame by association for opening that door! Because Wen Ruohan is no more responsible for other people's choices than Nie Mingjue himself is!
Plus, Nie Mingjue could only sense the blood falling on his face. He hadn't seen what had happened. By all means, the blood could have been Meng Yao's if the story of Wen Ruohan's mood swings was true. But Nie Mingjue still immediately guessed and correctly understood what had transpired before he lost consciousness: Wen Ruohan, who had beaten Nie Mingjue into the ground without a hair going out of place, who had led his forces to successfully capture all the cultivators at Yangquan and bring them to Nightless City, had been killed so very, very easily
Wen Ruohan was murdered when not even Nie Mingjue had tried to murder him!
But like, if there had been true animosity between them, shouldn't Nie Mingjue have been relieved in some way or form if Wen Ruohan, Sect Leader Wen, truly was the Big Bad to be feared or destroyed? Shouldn't he be satisfied that his father was avenged? But the opposite happens. At no point do we see he's happy or satisfied or relieved. He hears that Wen Ruohan is dead and his first mood, that even Meng Yao catches onto, is just, 'I'm going to fucking kill this tiny bastard.'
He's also not worried about Wen Ruohan just being injured and chasing after them. He's not on his guard from a vengeful Wen Ruohan. Nie Mingjue only starts to get agitated after learning of Wen Ruohan's death and he only asks for his saber after that death is confirmed.
So what if... Nie Mingjue wasn't happy about Wen Ruohan's death? Because, at the end of the day, Wen Ruohan never actually chooses to do harm... And maybe, if they ever stood face-to-face and actually had a chance to speak and listen to one another, just maybe--
And then it was too late, the coastline was already vanishing into the distance and I was out at sea 😔🥺

And a 3rd piece. Well, a hint.
Mutinous, Nie Mingjue met that heated gaze. He glared.
Wen Ruohan began to smile.
“As my wife wishes.”

Both the donghua and the Japanese audio novel were like, we heard you were living off Nie Mingjue and Wen Ruohan crumbs and we have brought you food.
Donghua: Have Wen Ruohan silently stare meaningfully into Nie Mingjue's eyes and make Nie Mingjue the vibrant exception to his kill-them-all policy
Japanese audio drama: Wen Ruohan now speaks directly to Nie Mingjue for the first time in an adaption (that I'm aware of) and invites him to raise his head

This is a companion piece for the reverse bigbang. Made it after the submitions were done because the fic is just... awesome and i was inspired. Besides my partber was very indulging in my little suggestions.
The comb was made of bone with a simple carving on the handle of a curved saber that had been worn smooth over the years. The comb had been his mother’s, a gift from his father, hand-carved from the antlers of a deer yao he had defeated early in their courtship. She had passed it to him after her death, and he favored it above all others.
As if it was not a priceless treasure, he offered the comb to his husband.
“Would you help me ready myself for bed?”

What’s your OTP for NMJ or are you a multi shipper?
OTP is still Ruojue!
But then I'm a multi shipper in that I still enjoy some of Nie Mingjue's other ships when I'm in the mood
But otp is otp because I'm always in the mood for Ruojue lol

Do you think WRH might have been in (one-sided) love with Lao Nie and that’s why he killed him?
Nie Dad?
No, I don't. I'm trying to think of how that would work, but unless your headcanon is just Wen Ruohan Is An Asshole, I'm coming up empty? Because if Wen Ruohan was in love with Nie Dad then he should know him at least a little, right?
Scenario 1 of the guest cultivator trying to throw Nie Dad under the bus: Wen Ruohan knows already that Nie Dad is pretty arrogant and prideful about his saber so it's no longer new news, meaning the guest cultivator has failed at his attempt to garner attention, has probably embarrassed himself in front of everyone, and would likely find himself replaced at the dinner table next week. Like the guest cultivator's claim basically turns into, "The sky is blue today!" Like yeah, buddy, Wen Ruohan knows Nie Dad loves his saber more than he loves Wen Ruohan anything else (but give it some time and Nie Dad WILL fall in love with him one day!!), so stop wasting the oxygen in the room.
Scenario 2 of the guest cultivator trying to throw Nie Dad under the bus: Asshole!Wen Ruohan knows already that Nie Dad is pretty arrogant and prideful about his saber so it's no longer new news, but being the asshole that he is, the guest cultivator has given him an idea for a new asinine game of "if Nie Dad doesn't have his saber to love then maybe he'll notice me."
Because it takes an asshole (a jealous asshole, actually) to try to break what your crush loves and adores, right? Like Wen Ruohan very much slapped that saber to test its strength without Nie Dad being aware wtf he was trying to prove. They do not part ways with any new kind of understanding or association. Then the saber breaks on a night hunt and Nie Dad is injured and he dies six months later. We are left with Asshole!Wen Ruohan being all, "Ah, damn, my bad... I loved that guy." Which pretty much becomes one of those situations where you bully your crush except Nie Dad doesn't even know he was being bullied for attention! He just suffers at home and dies lol
If anything, I think it would be more plausible that Nie Dad is in (one-sided) love with Wen Ruohan. Wen Ruohan's key points are that he is powerful and oblivious. He hears about Nie Dad being an asshole about that prized saber and so invites him to his house to test the truth. Nie Dad flies over there immediately, all sweaty palms and butterflies, but Wen Ruohan just asks to see his saber, slaps it a few times, and hands it back with an, "OK, that's all I wanted. Bye."
And Nie Dad goes home confused and disappointed because that was it?? Is his crush not going to give him the time of day!? Not even a walk through the garden or a homoerotic dual on the roof??? Then the saber breaks on a night hunt and Nie Dad is injured and actually, ACTUALLY, what the fuck, he's so pissed at Wen Ruohan! He would have been so good to Wen Ruohan but Wen Ruohan set him up for this somehow!? Fuck that guy! Fuck his own heart for leading astray! And RIP he dies in six months and Wen Ruohan doesn't even know his name...

Age Reversal RuoJue. In which Nie Mingjue is a century’s old sect leader and Wen Ruohan is a bastard orphan who is trying to make a name for himself AND win his hand
A/N: I'm kind of fascinated with where you got the idea of NMJ being a bastard orphan from tbh?? I mean, role reversal implies NMJ had those qualities first and then you give them to WRH...anyway
-
“Maybe we should change it up in this life,” Nie Huaisang said, and Nie Mingjue glanced at him sidelong. His little brother had that contemplative tone of voice he got when he was making trouble. “No, really! Doesn’t it get old, you know, all those Nie sect leaders dying tragically from qi deviations –”
“We’re not not doing the qi deviation thing,” Nie Mingjue interrupted, frowning. “It’s our thing.”
Nie Huaisang rolled his eyes and patted him on the arm. “Yes, yes, I know, and you do so love putting on a grand performance, all red eyes and blood everywhere, all the drama of it.”
Nie Mingjue didn’t dignify that with an answer, even though it was true that it was kind of fun to let loose sometimes. He usually didn’t allow himself the chance.
“Listen, I’m not saying we’re not going to do it,” Nie Huaisang said soothingly. “We have to find a way to ‘die young’ somehow, right? Otherwise people will start thinking we’re immortal.”
“Huaisang. We are immortal.”
“But other people don’t need to know that, isn’t that what we agreed? That’s the usual routine: first you’re the sect leader and everything’s all well and good, then you die tragically and I take over, mourn sadly, fritter away a few decades in the role, grow disgustingly old and grey –”
“You don’t have to use that much makeup.”
“I like the make-up. Anyway, when I’m old, I then adopt a charming young man – or maybe I have a standing in ‘kid’ who grows up into a charming young man – and die at some convenient time, then ta-da! You’re sect leader again, just in time for a revival of the sect.”
“Is there a reason you’re reciting the routine to me? It’s not like I haven’t lived it with you.”
“I’m just saying: how about we swap it up this time?”
Nie Mingjue arched his eyebrows.
“I get to be the self-destructive wonderful asshole that is doomed to die young in a qi deviation,” Nie Huaisang proposed. “You get to be the mourning son. Sound good?”
Nie Mingjue snorted.
“What? What’s wrong with it?”
“Oh, nothing. I’ll be mourning you all right, but only because someone is going to kill you first.”
“Are you saying you think I’ll get murdered before I qi deviate?”
“I’m willing to bet money on it.”
Nie Huaisang grinned. “You’re so on.”
(Some time later, Nie Mingjue poked Nie Huaisang. "Hey, expert in mourning," he said. "What's the loophole that says I can still pick up what's getting dropped down in front of me here?"
"I can't believe you want to sleep with my murderer," Nie Huaisang sniffed. "But also, yeah, you should definitely go for it. He's cute!")
