In 1886 the Board of Missions for Freedmen of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, under the leadership of the group's secretary the Rev. Richard Allen, began planning for the establishment of a black girls' school in Texas. After a statewide survey, they chose Crockett as the school site because of the area's large black population and because of a local black parochial school operated by the Rev. Samuel Fisher Tenny, pastor of the city's First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Allen's wife Mary, for whom the school was named, was instrumental in raising the organizational funds for the new seminary. Dr. Byrd R. Smith became the school's first black president in 1924 and initiated a period of growth which included the adoption of new programs and the admission of male students. Transferred to the Missionary General Baptist Convention of Texas in 1944, Mary Allen College became a 4-year liberal arts institution. In 1972, plagued by a series of legal and financial setbacks, the school closed. Late yesterday afternoon I could see that the clouds in the sky looked quite conducive to a sunset (lots of high thin clouds).  Therefore, after dinner I headed out in search of one.  However, every direction I went to where I thought would I might like to shoot one brought me out from under that nice high cloud deck (which had already dissipated quite a bit).  I ended up near this old abandoned house/cabin in the hopes that the clouds over it would color up, even though I’d be shooting east, away from the setting sun.  I got out of the car as the last minute of sun hit the structure.   A minute after this the building was in complete shadow.  That low sun was doing come cool things with the textures of the Skedaddle Mountains in the distance too so I grabbed this shot with my long lens zoomed in quite a bit.  The longer focal length "compressed" the mountains and structure together a fair bit sort of anchoring them for an image.   I did get frames later as the clouds overhead did indeed color up.  Stay tuned to see if any of those worked.
