"STAR TREK VOYAGER" Retrospective: (5.12) "Bride of Chaotica!"
Tumblr media
"STAR TREK VOYAGER" Retrospective: (5.12) "Bride of Chaotica!"
One of the aspects of "STAR TREK VOYAGER" that I have truly enjoyed over the other TREK shows were the holo programs featured or the episodes centered in the two Holodecks. One such holo program was "The Adventures of Captain Proton" stories created by Voyager’s Chief Pilot, Tom Paris. Captain Proton was featured in at least four episodes – three in Season Five and one in Season Seven. But without a doubt, my favorite happened to be the third Proton story titled, (5.12) "Bride of Chaotica!".
In short, "Bride of Chaotica!" began when Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeil) and Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) are enjoying the latest chapter of his Captain Proton program in one of the Holodecks. They are forced to leave it running when spatial distortions trap the ship and disrupt their control over the computer. Voyager’s command staff attempted to discover a way to free the ship from the spatial distortions. Unfortunately, extra-dimensional aliens that exist in a photonic state cross over from their own dimension through a distortion located in the holodeck. They are detected and attacked by Proton’s archenemy, Dr. Chaotica (Martin Rayner), who believes them to be from the Fifth Dimension, and whose holographic (photonic) weaponry - though harmless to humans - is deadly to the aliens. Eventually, the crew discover the war being waged between Chaotica and the Fifth Dimension and must defeat him by playing out their roles as the fictional Captain Proton (played by Tom Paris), his sidekick Buster Kincaid (Harry Kim), and Arachnia, Queen of the Spider People. Paris convinced Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) to take on the latter role.
I might as well be frank. I LOVE "Bride of Chaotica!". I adore it. It is one of my favorite TREK episodes of all time. What am I saying? It is my favoriteTREK episode of all time. Screenwriters Bryan Fuller (creator of "DEAD LIKE ME" and "PUSHING DAISIES") and Michael Taylor created a first-rate episode filled with imagination, action and humor. Having the characters of Tom Paris’ Captain Proton holoprogram get drawn into a galactic war with an actual group of actual aliens that are photonic was a stroke of genius. And Fuller and Taylor, along with director Allan Kroeker, did an excellent job combining an original story with great characterization.
The cast was excellent, as always. Robbie McNeill and Garrett Wang revived their old magic as Tom and Harry – the two crewmembers who got more out of the Captain Proton holoprogram than anyone. Come to think of it, McNeill also managed to generate strong chemistry with Tim Russ (Lieutenant-Commander Tuvok) and Kate Mulgrew. The latter was superb as Queen Arachnia, although I think she may have been a little guilty of too much mugging, while expressing Janeway’s disregard for the Proton holoprogram. However, I loved her scene with Neelix (Ethan Phillips) that showcased Janeway’s caffine addiction. With that scene, she may have truly earned the nickname - Queen of the Delta Quadrant:
JANEWAY: "Coffee, black." NEELIX: "I'm sorry, Captain. We've lost another two replicators –" JANEWAY: "Listen to me very carefully because I'm only going to say this once. Coffee – black." NEELIX: (To replicator)"Coffee, black. While I've got your attention there are –" JANEWAY: (Holds up hand)"Coffee first."(drinks/inhales)"...Now, what's the problem?"
And then there is Dr. Chaotica, portrayed with great relish by Martin Rayner. The promise he had shown as a rich and over-the-top character in the Season Five premiere, (5.01) "Night" was fulfilled in this episode. The late Nicholas Worth ably supported both Mulgrew and Rayner as Chaotica’s ruthless, obsequious henchman, Lonzak.
As much as I love "Bride of Chaotica!", there is one aspect about it that disturbed me – namely the crew’s reaction to the Captain Proton hologram. It is quite apparent that they view it as nothing more than a childish piece of fiction for those of the immature mind. And it is quite apparent that they also view Tom Paris’ participation in it as childish. And they are not the only ones. I have read some reviews of the episodes. While most tend to sneer at it, along with anything else labeled "STAR TREK VOYAGER", at least two of them did not. Julia Houston seemed to view the holo program not only as Tom Paris’ personal fantasy, but also as an example of his imagination. Like me, she seemed annoyed by the inability of others to appreciate Paris' imagination . . . and his right to his own fantasy. Now Jim Wright did seem to enjoy the holo program and appreciate its uniqueness. But it also seemed that he viewed it as a sign of Paris’ immaturity . . . and as something that the Chief Pilot would have to give up in order to develop as an adult and ideal Starfleet officer.
Quite frankly, I agree with Julia Houston. I was very annoyed by the other Voyager crewmen’s snobbish reaction to Captain Proton. Okay, perhaps they did not care for it very much. But was there really any need for them to openly sneer at what he considered recreation and fantasy? What law was there that Tom’s pursuit of recreation had to be culturally high-brow or meaningful? Janeway, of all people, had no business to sneer. This is a woman who had spent two seasons indulging in her Lambada One holo program – a "Jane Eyre"/"Rebecca" Gothic romance. I must also admit that I was a little put-off by Jim Wright's assumption that Tom needed to give up the Proton program in order to become more mature as an adult. To me, this attitude seemed like a clear lack of appreciation for Tom’s vivid imagination. Perhaps it was more important to him and other "VOYAGER” fans that Tom become the stand-up Starfleet officer that Owen Paris and Janeway wanted him to be. Happily, Tom never stuck to his declaration of giving up the Proton program. He and Harry were still using it in the early Season Six episode called (6.05) "Alice". And a late Season Seven episode called (7.23) "Homestead" revealed that Tom had created another B-movie style program called "Invaders from the Ninth Dimension".
Personally, I like the idea that Tom Paris would eventually become that successful holonovelist sometime in his future. But in the VOYAGER relaunch novels, he became a permanent Starfleet officer, achieving the rank of Lieutenant-Commander and Voyager’s new first officer. Ugh. What a waste of a vivid imagination that created the likes of the Proton holoprograms. In real life, I would compare Tom to the likes of George Lucas, Gene Roddenberry, J. Michael Stracynski and the two writers who had created this wonderfully imaginative episode – Fuller and Taylor. A girl can imagine - can't she?

I know it's Daily Mail but that new article is giving pre break up vibes
O. I wouldn't be surprised if the next time they get spotted with other people the first thing that will be mentioned is
"Harry and Taylor Russ decided to remain friends after just casually dating for a few months." And maybe something about busy schedules keeping them from going deeper into a serious relationship.

Allegra Kent Rehearsing La Sonnambula
Tumblr media

Happily for all of us, Jonathan Stafford and Wendy Whelan are bringing back dancers who worked with Balanchine to coach today's company members. This article about Allegra Kent, the original NYCB Sleepwalker in La Sonnambula, coaching Unity Phelan in the role, is from today's New York Times.
Allegra Kent Conjures ‘Messages From the Air, the Atmosphere’
The iridescent Balanchine ballerina returns to New York City Ballet this season to coach for “La Sonnambula.” What does she want? Mystery.
By Gia Kourlas Oct. 3, 2023
It was the first ballet that made sense to her. There was mystery, passion, pain. The music, by Vittorio Rieti, after themes from Bellini operas, swept her into another world.
“I was 11,” said Allegra Kent. “My heart was broken.”
Kent, the former New York City Ballet principal, was just a child when she attended a performance by Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in Los Angeles. The final work on the program was “Night Shadow,” George Balanchine’s 1946 ballet, later called “La Sonnambula.”
Kent had no idea who Balanchine was. But just four years later, she would join New York City Ballet, the company he had formed with Lincoln Kirstein. And not long after that, in 1960, Balanchine revived the ballet, casting Kent as its mysterious Sleepwalker.

This season, as part of the company’s 75th anniversary, Kent, 86, was brought in as a guest coach for “La Sonnambula,” which returns Wednesday for four performances, and for “The Unanswered Question,” the gripping second movement of “Ivesiana.”
Kent wasn’t with the company from its 1948 start, but she was still a part of its early days and one of Balanchine’s most important muses.
She joined City Ballet at 15, just a year after she arrived in New York from California to study at the company-affiliated School of American Ballet. Balanchine gave her a scholarship, and soon after, she began attending performances.
“The first ballet I saw on the first program was 'Serenade,'” she said, referring to the Balanchine masterpiece in an interview at her Manhattan apartment. “I can’t remember the other ballets because it was like, 'Serenade'—the whole world is open.”
Eventually La Sonnambula, with its magic and tragedy, came her way. In this haunting ballet, the Poet hero romances a woman, the Coquette, before discovering a Sleepwalker at a masked ball. Holding a candle, the Sleepwalker skims across the stage in close-knit bourrée steps on pointe wearing a flowing dress. Its diaphanous sleeves, like wings, catch the air as they stream behind her.
The Coquette’s jealousy leads the Baron, the host of the ball, to stab the Poet; the Sleepwalker, devastated, carries him away. With the right dancers, the ballet is gut-wrenching, but it takes imagination born from almost psychic sensations. The heroine may be walking in her sleep, but “she’s not expressionless,” Kent said. “You can’t come in like a zombie.”
In the pas de deux, the Sleepwalker glides past the Poet, who ducks underneath her candle; he waves his hand in front of her face to see if she is awake; he falls to the floor in her path, but she steps over his outstretched body, unruffled, and continues on her way. There should be daring, too: on tour in Moscow, Balanchine demonstrated one of the Sleepwalker’s crossings on a stage that Kent said was like a football field.

“He took the candle and ran on the diagonal,” she said. “In those days, they had footlights. He stepped over the footlight and stopped. I thought, Oh, my God, he’s going to die” — plunging off the stage. “But he didn’t die. He stepped back and gave the candle to me.”
He was showing her, in essence, how the Sleepwalker possesses a layer of extrasensory perception; that what can’t be seen can be felt, and that even in a sudden stop — as he did himself on that stage — there should be no physical reverberation.
“Balanchine loved danger,” Kent said. “In the step in ‘The Unanswered Question’ when she slowly goes back” — the ballerina, again in white and held aloft, falls into the arms of four men obscured by darkness — “the audience is terrified for a moment. So this is the genius of Balanchine. Ah! She’s going to run off the stage! She’s going to fall over backward! Is anyone going to catch her?”
The original Sleepwalker — and the one Kent first saw all those many years ago — was the great ballerina Alexandra Danilova. Kent herself was briefly coached by Danilova not in the studio, but in a chance meeting, waiting for the 104 bus on Broadway. “She stood up and started demonstrating at the bus stop,” Kent said. “Gosh, what a moment.”

This is a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ in the Balanchine style,” Kent said. “The kiss does not wake her up.” Photo: Amir Hamja for The New York Times
Rehearsing at City Ballet’s studios with Unity Phelan and Taylor Stanley, who will perform the Sleepwalker and the Poet in one cast, Kent was intensely ethereal, acutely focused, with fingers full of life. She said, “You’re getting messages from the air, the atmosphere.”
Kent turned to the mirror to study their reflection as if it were a painting. With her elbows raised, her fingertips curving toward her chest, she worked on details — as many as she could. She was trying, it seemed, to penetrate below the surface of the skin, to draw raw emotion into the movement. Details are important to Kent, as they were to Balanchine. He would come backstage and say, “‘Oh, your crown is half an inch too far back,’” she said. “‘Bring it forward.’ I mean, it’s not even the hair, it’s just the crown. Details.”
Kent stood in front of Phelan, who held the candle with a curved arm as the other extended to the side. Kent rested her elegant fingers on Phelan’s shoulders — just a whisper of pressure — and stared at their reflection in the mirror. “Don’t look up,” she said, releasing her hands.
“You are sleepwalking, but you’re aware,” Kent said. “You’re in another realm but there’s something going on within you. A great tragedy that is not explained.”
Phelan, who danced the Sleepwalker in a previous season, is approaching the role differently now. Her Sleepwalker moved too forward from the chest, but with Kent’s help, she is working on relaxing, softening. “You can still be active, but if it gets all tense then it looks like you’re putting on a show instead of it coming from a genuine place,” Phelan said later. “If I’m just being myself and actively doing something, I’m not sensing everything in my body. So that’s what I’m trying to bring it back to.”
When she first danced the Sleepwalker, Phelan wanted to prove that she could be ghostly, waiflike, light. “What I’ve discovered from Allegra is that I may have been going too far with that,” she said. “You let yourself be involved emotionally. I think I was trying to stay so disassociated.”
Tumblr media
“You are sleepwalking, but you’re aware,” Kent said. “You’re in another realm but there’s something going on within you. A great tragedy that is not explained.” Photo: Amir Hamja for The New York Times
When the Sleepwalker comes onstage, she’s not just taking brisk walks on pointe. She’s searching. “We don’t know what it is — if it’s a child, if it’s a love,” Kent said. “But it’s a huge thing missing. It’s a huge urgency. But beyond that, there’s so much mystery. There is a huge lack in her life.”
Stanley, rehearsing the moment when the Poet waves his hand in front of the Sleepwalker’s face to see if she is awake, was too dynamic. Kent stepped in to demonstrate.“ Just the tiny back and forth over my eyes,” Phelan said, “with her hand being that close to my face, I saw all the energy. She wasn’t shaking. Nothing was happening. But everything was alive in her hand. I was like, that’s what she means.”
There’s nothing casual about “La Sonnambula,” which Kent says is like no other Balanchine ballet. “I used to do this night after night in my living room just to get that despair and the subtleties,” Kent said. “That search. This is a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ in the Balanchine style. The kiss does not wake her up.”
Kent, with her cheerful wit, summed up her own “Sonnambula” experience: “This is what I’d say: Thank you, Balanchine,” she said. “Thank you, Madame Danilova. And I thank the M.T.A., the metropolitan transit authority. The generosity of her and the generosity of the bus being late.”

Kootch! Worth waiting for! Timing is everything, and his was perfect. It’s taken years to get Danny Kortchmar alone in the Game Changers guest seat, having paid us a couple of previous visits with his Immediate Family brothers. This Danny is kinder, gentler, and oh, so fun. He’s been leaning more and more in this direction to my view since falling in love with Lisa Roy, even after surviving the devastating loss of her life. She was the love of his, and it appears she did him a world of lasting good. Danny will be the first to admit he can be serious and… cranky. No sign of that guy this evening… just great stories of some of the greatest musicians of our time, from one of them, all wonderfully, entertainingly, told. We may have even heard a few previously undocumented firsts… starting as a kid discovering early rock ’n roll, to very soon playing it, summering on Martha’s Vineyard, and the early teenage friendship that would change his life. Jamie, as Kootch calls James Taylor, who talked him into some questionable behavior, then blamed him, classic! Not something I’d imagine or associate with sweet baby James. Their lifelong friendship, their musical collaboration, how it started, and why it ended. Meeting, working, and loving Peter Asher, Lou Adler, Carole King, Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Linda Rondstadt, and Jackson Browne. The story behind Somebody’s Baby. We talked about his extensive successful producing career (although he has a caveat which was fascinating to hear) - including Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Toto, and his extensive collaboration with Don Henley, the great and the tough of it. There are no endings with Kootch. Once family, always family. He remains close to all of them. And speaking of family, Danny spoke to the birth, development, and current state of affairs of The Immediate Family, his beloved creation. His frustration with the pandemic’s impact and the conflicting work schedules of his brothers doesn’t dampen his passion for their new album yet to drop, and their soon-to-be-released brilliant Denny Tedesco documentary, Immediate Family. There is remorse that Waddy Wachtel’s commitment as Stevie Nick’s musical director, a position he’s held for 25 years will keep him from 5 scheduled live shows, but Danny did drop some news… The Cars Elliot Easton will be jumping in for those shows, certainly softening the blow.
This time with Danny was a joyous romp through the musical soundtrack of so much of my life. His songs, and his playing, are forever etched in my heart and soul. The man sure do know how to rock ’n roll. Good God!

Which Quarterbacks Have the Best Chance to Pull Off a Matthew Stafford or Tom Brady?
The last two years, we have seen a talented, veteran QB join a new team and immediately turn a contender into Super Bowl Champions. Now, other teams with relatively complete and capable rosters seek to upgrade their QB position just like the Buccaneers and Rams.
Over the offseason, a handful of proven quarterbacks have changed settings in hopes of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in Glendale, Arizona this year. There are three QBs that have a realistic shot for a deep playoff run and continue the trend of the previous two Super Bowl Champions. Coincidentally, they are all in the tough AFC with the Bills and Chiefs leading the way as the favorites. Here are my rankings of who has the best shot to reach the top:
3. Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns: Watson is the most talented of the three QBs on this list and the Browns have the most talented roster on this list. Last year showed they are on the right path with their best record since 1994. With 11 wins by Baker Mayfield, imagine what they will do with Watson. So why aren’t they higher on my list? Well, Watson comes with a great deal of legal issues and possible suspension looming over his head. The Browns do not have a proven track record of success and are one of the worst cultures in the league. In the AFC North, culture matters when playing the Raven and Steelers twice. The Browns feel too good to be true and I sense a 2011 Dream Team Eagles ambiance around this team. The Browns will be the ultimate boom or bust this year.
Fantasy player to keep an eye on: David Bell, WR
This rookie WR class is loaded with talent and potential to make an impact from the jump. The Browns are rich with weapons and might have the best skill players in the league. Njoku has been flying up the rankings, however, I expect the rookie with something to prove getting peppered with targets in the slot position. He is floating around WR 75 and below players I would not touch with a ten-foot pole. Bell is worth the upside potential IF Watson plays.
2. Matt Ryan, Indianapolis Colts: The 2016 NFL MVP reminds me of last year’s Matt Stafford. People forget how good you really are when you play on a losing team long enough. He will inherit one of the better offensive minds in Frank Reich and the most talented running back in the league with Johnathon Taylor. Matty Ice should feel more comfortable throwing in the pocket with a significantly better offensive line and defensives emphasizing the run game. Watch out for the Play Action! The comparison for this duo are Tennessee Titans with Tannehill and King Henry. Matty Ice is way better than 2020 Tannehill, who was a dark house in MVP conversation throughout the 2020 season. Although he does not have a great group of receivers, the three things I listed above will allow Ryan to be successful along with the easiest path to the playoffs among the three QBs listed. I expect the Colts to be an 11-win team and win the AFC South.
Fantasy player to keep an eye on: Alec Pierce, WR
After Michael Pittman, there is no clear-cut number receiving option. Well, maybe Hines coming out of the backfield. TY Hilton and Zach Pascal are gone, leaving 100 targets up for grabs. There is a big opportunity for a big and physical WR to get open downfield when defenses forget about Pierce sneaking past their coverage. Out of the three fantasy players in this article, Pierce probably walks into the best chance to receive the most target share from a veteran QB who will throw for over 4000 yards. Pierce will most likely go undrafted, but if you miss out on other rookies WRs early in the draft, circle this young buck’s name as your last draft selection.
3. Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos: I expect first year head coach Nathaniel Hackett to let Russ cook in a similar fashion to what the Buccaneers did with Brady. Russell is the most accomplished QB and best leader on this list by a mile. He will elevate an already talented WR room to the next level. The 2022 AFC West is the best division we have seen in years, so it will be a brutal gauntlet week in and week out. However, facing Mahomes, Herbert and Carr twice will make the Broncos battle tested for the playoffs. I have Russell throwing for 34 TDs and 9 INTs as he helps Denver secure a wild card spot. If they make it out of the wild card round, the Bronco will be a nightmare for any team next round.
Fantasy player to keep an eye on: KJ Hamler, WR
Russell will be looking for his new Lockett. Although Cortland Sutton will be one player to look out for, him and Juedy are already being drafted in the same round. Juedy has injury concerns going into the season. Tim Patrick will be a noteworthy option as well. But, drafting is all about finding the best value. Hamler is barely cracking the top 100 WR rankings. He is worth the late round flyer in a 12 or 14 team PPR draft if you do not own any Broncos skill players.

Tyler Rust x Reader
content warning: simply just fluff literally nothing else besides maybe 2% angst
summary: tyler comes home with a wound from a match
a/n: i wrote this before he was released no I will not be changing his name
Tyler laid with his head across your lap. His eyes were focused on the television but you could tell he was barely clinging to consciousness. His golden hair was sprawled out behind him, creating delicate waves against your body. As you ran your fingers through the tawny locks he leaned into your touch like a contented cat.
There was a deep, burgundy and violet wound just below his eye, running down the length of his cheekbone. Black stitches were roughly sewn along the injury. You hadn’t expected him to come home like that.
You understood his job and the career path he had chosen. You understood it meant sometimes he got injured and sometimes he would bleed. He had come home with broken legs and ankles. Not very often but often enough that it wasn’t really anything more than a nuisance for you. But occasionally it would take you by surprise. He always tried to call you after the matches, to let you know how it went, to let you know if something had happened but sometimes he forgot. Sometimes he’d come home with a black eye or a laceration or a brace attached to a joint and it would catch you off guard.
That’s what happened yesterday.
The evening had crept along as you waited for him to return home. You tried to forget the nightmare of a day you had endured by losing yourself in the pasta sauce bubbling on the stove. You knew Tyler would be home soon and the tension would truly melt away the moment he had his arms wrapped around you.
The door opened and closed. A bag hit the floor.
“Hey, darling. I’m home.” He called out into the house.
“I’m in the kitchen.”
You could hear his footfalls approaching, his arms wrapping around your waist. He buried his head in the crook of your neck and took a deep breath before pressing a kiss to your shoulder. You smiled. He was home. Home and safe. Sharing the same space, breathing the same air as you.
“I’m gonna need you to sew my trunks. They got a little torn on the side last night.”
You nodded. You hadn’t gotten to see the match but mending his gear was commonplace for you. You could feel him relax against you and it gave you a sense of peace. Gently, you brought a hand behind you and ruffled his hair. You ran that hand down his cheek and felt him wince. The rough texture was strange and not at all what you had expected to encounter.
This caused you to turn. And there it was. The stitches. The bruising.
“What happened?” You had asked, a hand falling to your hip.
“Nothing. Just took a kick wrong.”
It wasn’t nothing. It was a massive wound that had clearly required the help of doctors to ensure its proper healing. A massive wound that had probably bled a lot. A massive wound that you weren’t there to worry about in the moment. And there was something about that that hurt you.
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“It was late. I didn’t want to wake you up when I figured I could tell you about it now.” His voice was gentle but it still upset you. He took your hand in his and he held it with the utmost care. “It’s fine though. Just a little cut, that’s all.”
It sat with you though. It was difficult to spend so much time apart and it was even more difficult to know there might be times where he got hurt and you wouldn’t know.
You weren’t able to enjoy dinner with the stitches staring back at you and you felt horrible that you couldn’t look past them to enjoy the night. You became withdrawn and decided against laying on the couch with him, opting to go to bed early instead. He found you curled up on your side, your eyes open and scrolling through social media. He leaned against the doorframe, his arms crossed. You were acting like a child but he still had a patient smile curling the corners of his mouth.
“Not gonna talk to me?” He asked.
“I’m just tired.” It was a lie and you knew it was and he knew it was but he tolerated it.
“I guess I’m tired too, then.” He shrugged, crawling in beside you.
You didn’t make a move, disinterested in breaking down the frustrated and begrudging wall you had built. But it meant nothing to him, his arms reaching around your side, pulling you closer. He peppered your shoulder with kisses, running them up your neck, to your cheek and back down again. You had to force yourself not to smile.
“Why’re you upset with me?” His voice was calm and kind.
“Why didn’t you tell me you got hit like that?”
“I told you. I figured I’d tell you when I got back here. No reason to make you worry when it was just a silly bump.”
“The guy could’ve taken your eye out.” You muttered into the pillow, your phone now down by your side.
Tyler brought the arm that originally lay against your waist, up and across your chest, as if it were a seatbelt holding you safely for the ride.
“But he didn’t.”
You didn’t say anything. He was also silent, the only sound between the two of you being rhythmic breathing. Finally, he let out a small sigh and relented in a way that was almost unnoticeable. You couldn’t feel it in his body or his arms but in his presence itself.
“Listen.” He turned you towards him and you unhappily felt your body roll accordingly to face the man you loved. “Sometimes this stuff happens. But it's okay. I’m safe. Nothing bad will happen to me.”
“It might one day.” You blurted out, your true feelings suddenly on display.
“It won’t.” His voice was firm and resolute. “As long as I’ve got you waiting for me at home I’ll always be coming back to you in one piece.”
He found your hands mixed in with the sheets and the duvet and laced his fingers through yours. He didn’t look you in the eyes right away, more focused on this moment of touch than anything else. When he did bring his gaze to meet yours it was clear, in spite of the darkness. His eyes were a gentle plea with you, asking you to understand he meant everything he said.
“I won’t let anything hurt me.” He murmured. “Only I can control that and I will for you.”
You waited a moment before allowing a small nod. A small acceptance of him, stitches and all.
So, there you sat. An evening removed from his return to the home you shared, his head on your lap, your hand in his hair. Occasionally, you took breaks from combing your hand through his locks to focus on finishing sewing the tear in his trunks.
With each movement of your needle, you brought them back together, into one whole piece. Back into one contiguous cloth, one unbroken garment.
Tyler looked up at you and sleepily smiled. You smiled back.
Back into one whole piece.

I present to you random songs that remind me of the ducks
-Banksie: Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift (“he’s so tall and handsome as hell” said it all )
-Guy: Lover by Taylor Swift (I believe that guy fell in love with Connie when he was very little, he is the og lover)
-Portman: Teenage dirtbag by Wheatus (dean gives me the bigger teenager dirtbag vibes)
-Charlie: Love grows by Edison Lighthouse (people usually associate this song with women but I think is perfect for him)
-Connie: She by Harry Styles (she is THE girl, she is she)
-Julie: Successful by Ariana Grande (she is the cat, she is the best goalie, she is hella successful)
-Cowboy: Good old fashioned lover boy by Queen (he is cowboy he is an old fashioned lover boy, this boy will be the most polite boy ever)
-Russ: Baby got back by Sir Mix-A-Lot (tbh I just know that he knows this entire song by memory and every time he has the chance he sings the entire thing)
-Averman: Paper rings by Taylor Swift (I just adore him not in a romantic way but I would do anything for him)
-Fulton: Another one bites the dust by Queen (idk actually he just gives me the vibes)
-Kenny: Hey soul sister by Train (I just imagine him loving this song and singing it while he studies or something)
-Luis: Everybody talks by Neon trees (“hey baby won’t you look my way I can be your new addiction” he used that as a pick up line fight me)
-Goldie: My bologna by Weird Al Yankovic (he discovers this song and thinks is very funny)
-Jesse: Jump around by House of pain (again idk why I just can imagine him walking around or playing street hockey listening to this song)
this just my very personal opinion but I thought I would share

MacGyver (2016) :)
First off, thanks for the ask! Secondly, sorry it took so long to answer! Christmastime is always very busy for me!
So I should probably preface this with the fact that when I first started watching the MacGyver reboot, I went into it expecting to -- and wanting to -- hate it. I'd fallen in love with the original and was hella mad that there were so many differences between the show I loved and this newfangled re-imagining of it. Boy, did my tune change! It's now one of my greatest fandom loves. So yeah. :)
The first character I first fell in love with: It has to be either Mac or Jack. Honestly, for the first few seasons especially, there really is no Mac without Jack, so they're kind of a package deal. I fell in love with Mac because he's genuinely kind, sassy, funny, and has so much angst and so many daddy issues that he doesn't know how to explore because he doesn't know what an emotion is, and he's so much fun to whump. Plus, have you seen Lucas Till? What a cutie lol!
I fell in love with Jack because he's earnest, unafraid of his emotions, an amazing father figure to both Mac and Riley, quirky, funny, and so very caring. His and Mac's relationship is my lifeblood when I'm watching the first two seasons especially.
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Well, I mean, given what I said at the beginning about going into the show wanting to hate it, I guess everyone would be an appropriate answer haha. But more specifically, I would say Riley. Don't get me wrong, I liked her pretty much from the beginning, but if you told me when I first started watching the show that she'd be one of my favorite characters, I might not have believed you. She's incredible - smart, witty, able to hold her own, strong, capable, relatable, and her relationship with Jack might just be my favorite in the show. The way they care about each other just... UUUGGGHH!
Also, Murdoc. I loved Murdoc in the original show, but when he first showed up in the reboot, I thought he was going to be the standard "creepy serial killer" type. And while he was that for a bit, he blossomed into the lovable psycho we all know and love to hate today. He's a genuinely funny character, while still remaining a real threat and being legitimately scary at times. He's brilliantly written and acted, and I do believe Dalmastian's performance does Des Barnes's original Murdoc proud.
The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Leanna. Sorry, she just irritates me. By the time she was added to the show, I was getting a little dizzy from all the team changes anyway, and I was really wanting some OG Mac team action. Plus, the lengths she went to to get to Bozer in their final exam are just too far for me. Other than that, she's just kind of bland. I can't exactly put my finger on why, but she bores me. Maybe I feel like she's there as a tool to motivate Bozer or to inspire him or to give him more relationships, but that she's just not fully developed in her own right, which is a disservice to the viewer and to her. Either way, I know a lot of people really like her, but I just don't see it. Plus (spoiler alert), she gets fridged, which means she definitely becomes a tool rather than a person, used to impact Bozer's life and his relationship with Russ, but nothing more.
The character I love that everyone else hates: I don't know how many people actually hate him, but I've definitely seen a lot of negative discourse about him on Twitter. I love Russ Taylor. Yeah, he's made some really, really crappy decisions, but that's what makes him such a great character in my book. I often love a character with complicated morals and who camps out in gray areas more frequently than not but who is trying to do the right thing and slowly learns to be a better person. I love the complicated relationship he has with the rest of the team and the way he and Mac often butt heads but ultimately learn to respect each other in the end. He's a fascinating character, and I really wish we could have seen more of him.
The character I used to love but don’t any longer: I really did like Desi at the beginning. Of course, I was wary of her because she was "replacing" Jack, but the moment she clarified that she doesn't like using guns unless an animal had been hurt, I was on board. But as soon as they started to push the Mac/Desi pairing and especially once the love triangle with Riley started, her character became so intertwined with her relationship status that she ceased to become a full, strong character. She was also much more unlikable in general - moody, rude, grumpy, and in later seasons very judgmental, manipulative, and even at times physical in her anger with Mac. That's not to say that he was perfect in their relationship, far from it, but her character became so poorly written once the love triangle started. I adore Levy Tran, though, and just think the writing and direction was sour in this case. There were still moments that the real Desi would peek through later on, but they were few and far between, and definitely not enough to make me like her the way I once did.
The character I would totally smooch: Okay, let me clarify that I am a very happy married woman, but for the sake of this question, I mean, does it really even need to be asked? It would definitely be Mac haha! Sorry, Riles! :)
The character I’d want to be like: Definitely Riley. She's just amazing. She's one of the most realistic and relatable characters on the show, so smart, funny, and a fierce friend. See all my points about why she's so awesome above. :)
The character I’d slap: Nikki, honestly. I love the first season, but I do not care for her story arc at all. And I really can't stand her, even after we learn the truth about her. I also wouldn't mind giving Russ a hearty slap now and again, either, when he deserves it haha!
A pairing that I love: MacRiley, of course, which is kind of crazy, because for the longest time I saw them more as siblings, but the writers, though they dropped the ball in some areas, really did so well in building up this ship believably. The stolen glances - even dating back to early seasons, I'm now noticing! - the selflessness, the true friendship, the crackling chemistry. They're perfect together, and I hope the show gets picked up for a sixth season so we can see them together at last. We deserve that much.
A pairing that I despise: For all the reasons listed above, MacDesi. That relationship is toxic AF. They were much, much better as friends and I will die on this hill.
Thanks again for the ask! I had a blast with this! :)

A Grande Interlude
Intro | part1 | part2 | part3 | part4
Funnily enough, this chapter begins exactly the same way as the last one: Russell is sad about Girl A and moves onto Girl B in order to make a point. He also wants Girl B to produce his music.
Writing songs for women (hoping they’ll touch his pee-pee and make him famous) is classic Russ behaviour. I’m only covering two cases, but he also tried it with Kylie Jenner (‘Win a Date with Kylie Jenner’) and Katy Perry (‘You Won’t Ever Have To Write Another Sad Song’). There’s also a generic song for the Instagram flavour of the week, perfectly titled ‘Right Here, Right Here (You Deserve a Better Life’).
This time, Ariana Grande drew the short straw.
Tumblr media
Russ purchased a ticket to one of her concerts in Salt Lake City, as well as a meet&greet pass. Where is he getting all this money? I have no idea — some questions are better left unanswered. Either way, by going through his Quora profile, you can tell some primo wooing was about to take place.
Tumblr media
The best part is that, when Russ says “a letter”, he means an entire notebook and one of his songs.
So he goes to the concert and seems to have the time of his life. He gets a picture with Ariana, which is pretty cool, I guess. And he seems to be genuinely happy, as seen here:
*lets take a second to appreciate the bitter shade thrown at Tay.
Tumblr media
...but there’s something secretly bothering him 👀
Tumblr media
By now you’re familiar with Russell’s tactics. He’s that guy on tinder who, if you take more than 10 minutes to answer, will tell you that you’re an ugly slut anyway.
Tumblr media
Pst! “Her manager isn’t a nice guy either” 👀 I think we can actually agree on that one, Russ!
Let’s ignore Russ’ violent tendencies and casual racism for a moment. We don’t want to get depressed here. Instead, I think we should take a closer look at Ariana’s face. You know, the face of a medieval executioner or whatever:
Tumblr media
🙂
Where’s the black hood and enormous french sword? What the fuck kind of beheading is this, Russell?
But, with this picture as his profile pic, he goes on to rant about how she hugged a random fan and not him. Purposefully ignoring that this “random fan” was a teenager and not a nearly 30 YEAR OLD MAN IN A SUIT, WHO BROUGHT HER FLOWERS EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A STRICT “NO GIFTS” POLICY. Sit down, Russ.
Tumblr media
While that whole post is absolute gold, my favourite part is when he said he isn’t going to sue Ariana, and moments later *spoiler alert* he sues Ariana. I guess he realised that it’s healthier to just be honest with oneself and admit that “yes, I am a shitbag willing to try anything to get a pretty girl to acknowledge my existence.”
As you might’ve expected, it was another small claims court. In Utah. It’s beautiful in a way, I think. Poetic💫.
Tumblr media
You might be wondering what he means with “she only felt sorry yesterday because people got hurt”. Well... you’ll be clenching your cute butt at this.
He thought it would be a great idea to post this right after the Manchester Arena bombing. Yes, the one that happened at an Ariana’s concert.
Yep.
His “friends” on Facebook weren’t crazy about that decision either. Which of course made Russ even angrier:
Tumblr media
didn’t compliment my suit
didn’t compliment my suit
didn’t compliment my suit
... people died, but she didn’t compliment his suit. I want an Uber to drive me into the fucking sun.
However!! Ultimately, Ariana saw this post and called Russ to apologise.
lol jk
Of course she didn’t: she hired a lawyer. Or someone on her team did. Ariana hasn’t given this man a second thought since she met him.
This lawyer, by the way, is the same one who defended Taylor Swift. Isn’t that marvellous? I imagine him very sexy, I don’t know why. I think I’ve seen a picture of him, and I know that I could easily look him up, but I don’t want to. I’m very attracted to the image I’ve built up in my mind. SHUT UP LET ME HAVE THIS.
Tumblr media
Before we get into this trial, please let me tell you this cool thing: so I’m getting most of my information from Kiwi Farms, right? Russell’s thread has, at time of writing, 2600+ pages. Russell is to that community what TTB&co is to us. So obviously, the day of the trial was their Christmas Day. And someone from Utah actually said “I have the day off today, screw it, I deserve a treat” and went to witness the spectacle in person. And wrote it all down. An actual angel from heaven I’m telling you.
That’s the kind of community I hope we develop around here. I want to imagine that if TTB gets sued by Josh or whatever, whoever is closest will travel to the trial and take pictures. Or you know what? Fuck it, we will all travel and make a fan convention of it. We can compliment each other’s suits!
Anyway, back to the topic on hand. You can read the transcript but I’ll give you the tl;dr:
First of all, Russell is late. The judge and Sexy Lawyer both assume he isn’t showing up, and the judge even decides to dismiss the case. But then Russ shows up. He wrote the time wrong on his calendar, and he even tries to show the judge his phone to prove it.
The trial was a mess — a short mess, though. The judge makes such a nice effort to explain the law to Russ. Then he gives him an almost fatherly talk about how you can’t just post whatever toxic shit you like on Social Media. And I absolutely loved it, because this adorable boomer was trying really hard to connect with ~the youth~. My favourite part is the judge trying to describe emojis:
“How do you explain: seven days later, happy happy, emoticon people, what are those, teddy bears? I don’t know. Things.”
That’s me trying to speak The TikTok with the kidz.
... turns out dear Russ had posted on Facebook that “there will be blood!” at the trial. And also that he would kick Sexy Lawyer’s ass 🤷‍♀️. For all of this, Russell apologises — but also he says this:
“I wasn’t associating it with any threat whatsoever. I was saying something stupid. I was being troll-y. I have over 1000 followers on Facebook.”
*none of the screenshots are mine

Jailbreak+Fugitives+Leverage
I freely admit this is a totally random fic prompt that came to mind and wouldn’t leave. Someone on the team (not Mac since he’s already gotten the falsely accused of terrorism shirt) gets into deep trouble, like accused of treason or something trouble and they have literally no evidence otherwise so they ended up jailbreaking them and going on the lam. This is the resulting conversation as they flee in a “borrowed” mini-van from the early 2000s. Bonus points if it’s eggplant colored and they had to toss like three car seats in the back.
Also Jack never left and Russ and Desi are still around because I think it would be amusing to see them interact with each other....and codex still happened I guess, oh and they are all hopeless nerds...
(Also featuring a ridiculous amount of fourth wall breaking and pop culture references.) Anyways...
“We are not going to be the Leverage team” Mac says, half resigned, and half amused.
“Dude, we are so Leverage!” repeats Bozer with far too much enthusiasm for someone recently involved in a jailbreak and laundry list of felonies.
“We are on the run,” points out Riley, “and you bet I can out Hardison anyone I want to.”
“True Riles,” Mac concedes, “But we’re not thieves, and this is not going to be a hi-tech rehash of Robin Hood.”
“You know who else was always insisting that Leverage weren’t thieves?” Bozer taunts.
Mac laughs for the first time in days, “Oh no, I am not going to be the Nate Ford in whatever this is, there is nobody like me in that show at all. Granted Riley is our Hardison, and somehow we ended up with twin Spencers.”
Desi and Jack shoot him identical startled looks.
“I am not Elliot Spencer.”
“Spencer, really?”
“What exactly are you lot discussing now?” Russ grumbles the backseat.
“Oh, Taylor is definitely Nate Ford” adds Desi, “He’s got the mind-tricks and everything.”
“Besides, he technically owns Phoenix” adds Mac, “So I guess Bozer and Mattie get to be Sophie and Parker…”
“Oh, it’s on Blondie,” Matty says laughing, “Who exactly are you then?”
“Nightwing to our Teen Titans,” laughs Riley, with a sideways wink at Bozer, “People do call you Boy Wonder an awful lot.”
“Murdoc calls me that…” mutters Mac unhappily, “and anyways I don’t look anything like Nightwing.”
“Whatever you say blue-eyes” and Desi smiles.
“If we’re going with superheroes, he’s Cap obviously,” argues Jack with a grin.
“Oh?” asks Matty.
“Well, itty bitty blond soldier boy? That’s not ringing any bells?”
“Mad scientist addition of Robin Hood” votes Bozer.
“Et tu Boze?” Mac quotes faux-mournfully, “It’s not like there are a lot of good mad scientist archetypes.”
“Well, there’s always Dr. Bishop from Fringe…” continues Bozer, “He’s not a bad mad scientist exactly.”
“He experimented on kids!” Mac says, scandalized into speaking rather louder than he had intended, “and he was insane and missing parts of his brain. Definitely not!”
“Oh, Mac is definitely more Peter Bishop…” says Russ thoughtlessly, “missing father, MIT dropout, reckless and doesn’t carry a gun, engineering skills…abandonment issues, crazy family that wants to destroy stuff…”
He trails off having finally noticed the glare that Matty is leveling at him.
“Well, I happen to know that I was not kidnapped from another universe,” Mac says with forced laughter after an awkward silence.
“Are you sure you’re not from another universe?” Jack asks, “cuz sometimes I wonder…”
“Imagine that,” laughs Riley, “Another Mac, another Jack…”
“What would alt-Mac be like I wonder?” asks Jack, “What do you’ll think?
“Longer hair, he can cook and he actually works at a think-tank…” volunteers Bozer.
“Ooo...kay, that was very specific and very quick?” Mac shoots him a suspicious glance.
“Don’t you guys spend time considering alternate realties?” asks Bozer with studied innocence, “I’ve also considered Sliders-style evil Mac, like Mac with Home Alone levels of evil traps in his lair and he’s really good at making bombs...”
“He’s already good at that Bozer...” says Russ dryly and another awkward silence ensues before Riley clears her throat.
“Well I think alt-Jack is probably a fly-by-night pilot who bums living space off of alt-Mac,” Riley says crisply with a smirk at Jack.
“Ouch” says a voice that sounds suspiciously like Bozer, except that he is rather obviously eating a chip by the time that Jack turns to glare at him.
Mac send her a greatful smile, he’d rather not think of evil versions of himself just yet, no matter what ancient tv show Bozer has been watching.
