Let's talk about "liberal russians"
Meet Ilya Varlamov. He is a popular russian blogger currently living in Europe. I used to watch him years ago for his urbanism content and architectural preservation/restoration projects.
Ilya has fked from russia because he doesn't agree with putin's politics. He doesn't feel safe and free in russia and he wants to live in a cultured and democratic society.
A perfect recipe for an anti-war "good russian", right? Wrong.
Instead of raising money for Ukrainian army, helping out Ukrainian refugees, participating in pro-Ukrainian demonstrations, raising awareness about russian war crimes - basically, doing anything morally correct in a situation when a country you're a citizen of is commiting a genocide - Ilya spends his time whining about how unfair and "russophobic" the world is.
Tumblr media
Recently he has been spotted in London by a ukrainian journalist, who has asked him a very simple question - is putin a war criminal? For a supposed "anti-war opposition", this couldn't be easier to answer, no? Well, Ilya answered the question by running away from the journalist
You might remember this character from the last-year scandal involving his Instagram post about Kyrgyzstan. While staying there as a "war refugee", he has defended his entitlement of insulting the country that sheltered, compared Kyrgyzstan to a giant restaurant and said that Kyrgiz people should be grateful that he has blessed them with his presence and must aim to please him. Never deleted that post, btw. Probably still thinks there was nothing wrong with it.
(Cultural context: Kyrgyzstan is a Cetral Asian country, so his speech reads very much as "natives, come kiss the feet of a white man")
Ilya has video series where he explores various "post-Soviet" countries, and a year ago he has made one about Ukraine as well. Only unlike with other countries, his entry about Ukraine was full of lies and pro-Kremlin propaganda. There is a very thorough examination of that "film" by a ukrainian journalist Roman Tsymbalyk, whom he has interviewed for his film and then edited out 99% of the interview and totally misrepresented Roman. Unfortunately, the video is in russian, but you might play around with automatically generated subtitles.
youtube
I am talking about this man not because he is some kind of rando. This is a very popular blogger (1,3 million subs on Instagram, 4,56 million subscribers on Youtube). This is the voice the "young, progressive, anti-authoritarian russian youth" listens to. This illustrates the truth all ukrainians know very well - russian liberalism ends on the "ukrainian question".

just watched a video of waiters in montenegro beating the fuck out of a ruzzian with a chair and i genuinely felt a physical relief.
for the context: he and his company were drunk driving and nearly hit a pedestrian. after that they trashed a tourist agency and beat one of the waiters. he’s literally saying “the fuck i’m ruzzian”, well yeah, you are, pig.

I mean, have you seen any large protests organised by russians abroad not is support of war and ussr? These fuckers are not living under the "regime", they can do whatever they want, but they all have chosen violence.
Where is so called russian opposition and their anti-war protests? The only thing these whining worms are doing abroad is complain about their "hardships" and ask to ease the sanctions. They don’t give a shit about the genocidal shitshow their beloved country is waging agains another sovereign nation. They have never given any shit about it. A lot of them have fled the country because they were afraid to lose the level of comfort they have been enjoying for the last 20 years.

Moral Equivalence
I found this “hilarious” cartoon attached to an essay entitled “No Moral Equivalence in the Middle East,” but it serves just as well as illustration of the sadly typical “liberal Russian” ruminations, below. ||| TRR Hello, dear readers! This is the Moscow Times weekly newsletter at your disposal. Let’s hope that our friends, acquaintances, relatives, and just plain Israelis survive the barbaric…

in general i agree that encouraging unsourced twitter hysteria is a bad thing but there is absolutely a media blackout happening in ohio rn and posting links to the occasional news article about it doesnt necessarily disprove that. this is a major, entirely man-made and preventable environmental catastrophe that should be plastered across the news 24/7 but that didnt even get 10 minutes of weekend coverage on the most “left” liberal channels like pbs. this shit is being actively sidelined by alien balloon hysteria bc it’s a direct result of the conditions rail workers were set to strike over until the millionaire railroad bosses colluded with biden and congress to forcibly prevent them from doing so. the fact that people in east palestine are being told everything is safe and fine while fish float up dead in their rivers and streams is not invention or overstatement. meanwhile buttigieg still hasnt said shit about any of this and apparently has no plans to reinstate baseline safety regulations to prevent this from happening again in the future.

today the russian highest court decided that all of the LGBT "international movement" is extremist. and any queer activist could face up to ten whole years in prison. this is not a joke, and this is as extreme, horrible and absurd as it sounds.
transitioning, both medical and legal is already banned. any form of "LGBT propoganda", both for minors and adults is already banned. this is a really hard time to fucking exist as a queer person in russia. we can't even go to a protest, and putin had been practically the president for 20+ years, and there's almost no chance he won't win the upcoming election. the elections are a known scam for us. we live in a dictatorship.
I don't see anyone international speaking about it. this is big news. please help spread the word
it is heartbreaking to never see anyone caring about this problems globally, like when something regarding queer rights happens in america or in western europe then the whole internet is talking about it, but when even a catastrophe like this happens over here nobody bats an eye
this isn't said to offend you or anyone else. this is a cry for help and solidarity. like come on we queers are supposed to be a community!!!
if anyone is interested in donating even a small amount, please PLEASE do. queer organisations have to get to stay open sonehow. we need help.
this is the links where you can donate:
https://boosty.to/parniplus this is for the one of the biggest queer news websites for us
https://centre-t.ru/help this is the biggest trans organisation that is very helpful
https://lgbtnet.org/donate/ this is one of the biggest queer organisations that provides psychological, legal and much more help
https://comingoutspb.net/support/ another queer helping organisation
https://spherequeer.org/donate/ this one has been helping us since 2012
there are many and many more but this is still something
please don't ignore this just because it isn't positive or because you don't approve of russian war in ukraine. we don't support it either
link one
link two
link three
link four
link five
if you can’t donate, rebloging and spreading this around is best. we can wallow in how horrible it is and it is horrible, but talk about it and send aid and keep the conversation going.

to counteract that stupid ass post going around:
I'm Ukrainian and jewish and I have never in my life supported israel because i know that there can be no be mercy for colonisers no matter who they are. I lived through occupation and I lived among "civilians who don't deserve it" (russians who moved into occupied territories to take over businesses, institutions, houses, which is what israelis have been doing for DECADES). and let me tell you it was pure hell and I'm happy that liberation of Palestine is happening.
From the river to the sea Palestine going to be free! 🇵🇸 Real Ukrainians stand with Palestine and support the heroes who fight against colonisers!

Reminder that liberals aren't leftists and are in fact closer to being centrists and conservatives. Leftists are people like socialists.
Leftists want everyone's needs met. Healthcare, housing, food, etc and within the USA where the GDP is 23 trillion those things should be provided by the government. Workers should equally own the businesses they run and distribute profit equally as well.
Being a leftist can look like a lot of things- like calling for the straight up destruction of a government- but most can agree that until that happens then everyone's human rights and basic needs should be provided at the very least. Lots of leftists work towards this.
Remember that when leftists ask you to vote for 3rd parties with platforms that include universal healthcare, housing, and police reform.
Because liberals who stopped their political growth in 7th grade will try to make leftists out to be "Russian psyops" or white supremacists because we vote with principles and values and that don't allow us to vote for people who commit genocide, let single moms and their kids starve, and/or call environmental protests terrorists.
They'll reduce all this nuance to us "being immature and splitting the vote"
Quite frankly, I refuse to fall for this narrative in 2024.
We are ALL exercising our right to vote for the person who represents us. No, my beliefs don't line up with Democrats so I don't vote for Democrats ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm not "splitting a vote" because I can't split my own fucking vote and I'm not a member of your party. I don't owe your shitty genocidal party any of my loyalty, quite frankly idk why You even vote for them since you say you care about human lives but I digress.
If your guy loses that means your views aren't the majority.
It does NOT mean I'm a Russian Psyop. And because I've already seen a post floating around about how The-Russian-Tumblr-Bots-Were-Real-And-Pretending-To-Be-Black I'm asking y'all to use your brains and critical thinking skills this election.
There's a REASON why they specifically wanted to undermine your trust in BIPOC. So let's think about this for a second.
Why would anyone want to undermine your trust in BIPOC? What kind of things do BIPOC say about the government and it's history? What are the political leanings of BIPOC? What would happen if everyone started to agree with those politics? Which party would those views harm most?
It's crazy to me y'all think those bots were there to help Trump when it's obvious as fuck to me that the Real concern is that BIPOC would make y'all more left which would only be trouble for Biden/Clinton. The only people that would lose votes if y'all voted more left like BIPOC bots told you to would be Democrats. We want Republicans to vote more left, remember? That would be a good thing.
They were on the site to keep liberals from going left and voting for someone like Sanders or Claudia de La Cruz instead of Clinton/Biden. They weren't helping Trump. They were helping Democrats. Republicans aren't the people listening to BIPOC Tumblr bloggers, are they?
And that psyop is STILL working cuz now liberal goons put in overtime to accuse anyone who criticizes the 2 party system of being a Russian bot 🥴🥴
Yeah. I'm sure the two parties who rely on that system definitely didn't expect or want that outcome at all. And I bet they really didn't want you to refuse to vote for anyone outside those 2 parties either. I'm sure they hate how this psyop ended with you having more trust in a corrupted 2 party system and less trust in 3rd parties that challenge the corruption of the system. How awful it must be for them, that the Russian Bots Ordeal ended with MORE trust in the current government and people being less willing to change it :(

In USSR knowing foreign languages was a privilege of very selected few. Borders were closed and 99,9% of the population never ever visited any other country in their whole lives. Most did not ever travel beyond borders of their home region.
I was born in 1991 in Luhansk, the year Ukraine became Independent.
When it was time for me to enter my 1st grade, my mother selected for me a school that specialized in foreign languages - it was her belief and hope that soon many foreign languages would soon spread in our country, as business would enter and economy would flow, so knowing languages, especially English, would be a good boost for my career. Like any mother, she wanted a bright future for her daughter.
I - an ordinary child from a rather not-well-off family - traveled to Paris on a trip organized by my French teacher in my high school.
In university, I got into a program of language studying in China for a year - as part of many collaboration programs our university had with many other universities throughout the world.
All that was possible in our rather small administrative centre town with a population of some 500k people.
All these things were unfathomable for my mother and everyone else who grew up in the USSR.
I graduated Uni in 2013.
My mom could not have ever predicted that one year after my graduation, a whole war would start and we would lose our home.
And that the most common way my foreign language skills would serve me in life - would be writing posts on the Internet, telling the world about it.

« In 1999, exactly a quarter of a century ago, Poland was invited to join NATO and the transatlantic family.
Twenty-five years later, not least because of the security guarantees that NATO provided us, we have become the fifth largest economy of the European Union, and the main buyer of US military equipment as I’ve already mentioned.
Victorious Ukraine may follow a similar path.
[ … ]
Ladies and gentlemen, whether we want it or not, Putin’s decision to start the biggest war in Europe since the defeat of Nazi Germany has already changed the course of history. It is up to us to decide if we want to shape that course ourselves, or let it be shaped by others—in Moscow, Tehran, or Beijing.
Helping Ukraine by defeating Putin is the right thing to do in the broadest sense of the word.
It is morally sound, strategically wise, militarily justified, and economically beneficial.
It outweighs politics. It transcends partisanship.
Now is the moment to act. Let’s get this done. »
— Foreign Minister Radosław "Radek" Sikorski of Poland speaking Monday at the Atlantic Council.
You can see his address and the following discussion in this vid.
youtube
In response to a question from the audience, Pan Sikorski gave this insight on Putin's thinking regarding the war:
[T]he trouble is that Putin doesn’t have an incentive to make peace. He’s already indicted at the Hague for stealing Ukrainian children. And he probably thinks that he—that it’s better for him to have a bad war than an unsatisfactory peace.
The only way to end the war is to make it way bad for Putin to continue it.
Putin is counting on the notoriously short American attention span while manipulating US politics through his vassal Donald Trump. We need to understand that wars don't go away just because Americans get bored with them.
A defeat in Ukraine for ethno-nationalist Putin and his mafia fascist régime is a victory for international liberal democracy.
