March Around the World 2019 – Russia – Dark Waters (1993) “I am she that liveth, and was dead; and behold I am alive for evermore; and have the keys of hell and death.” A woman travels to a convent on remote island in order to discover the truth of her past. Everything goes bizarrely wrong when the nuns start trying to kill her. Although the beginning 20 minutes or so is a bit odd and confusing, the movie does a great job of pulling together discordant sounds and images to make everyone and everything pretty much awful. All the villagers are creepy, and the nuns are terrifying from minute one. It’s hard to believe this movie was made in the ‘90s, since the entire set dressing, style, tone, and cinematography (particularly the way the camera lingers for long periods on a single image) has the feel of an earlier film — and I mean this in a good way. The most annoying part was the music (especially in the beginning), which sounds a bit like an out of tune organ. It’s meant to be unsettling, but I found it mostly annoying and distracting.
