"All that to say, it wasn't totally new territory for Agent Hawaii to be the first Agent chosen for implantation. One thing she is far from first in is the rankings, but they have no bearing on implantation order. Considering how picky the Project have to be about neural compatibility, in order to get AI-human pairings who don't end up squealing on the floor from feedback loops or sensory input beyond comprehension, it really wouldn't be possible to pay attention to rankings."

An AU in which the Blood Gulch Crew are bottom-of-the-rankings Freelancers who happen to be the Agents chosen for compatibility with the AI fragments.

First chapter of the first work is up - in this installment, Agent Hawaii and Agent Texas go for Hawaii's first simulated battle training since her implantation and things go FUBAR.

I wrote this for @sleepyseadogg I hope you enjoy it! Thank you @redvsbluesecretsanta for hosting the exchange! :) I had a blast writing this because Grif's and Church's friendship is one of my favorites.

Summary:

Sometimes you just need a break. When Grif and Church need breaks from their teams and Blood Gulch itself, they meet up in the caves, drink beer, and relax. Well, they try.

Preview of story:

Grif waits for the sounds to disappear before he continues. “I guess I thought you were dead, and that sucked.” 

“Dude we’re on opposite sides. The other ending up dead is the goal.” Reality doesn’t keep Church from cracking open the drink Grif had passed him.

“Yeah, but not really though.” Grif lifts the helmet up just enough to get his lips on top of the can. Aluminum clings to his lips as he chugs down the beer. It’s rancid. Straight up smells like the caves and metal, but the taste was worse than car oil. Still, it’s the only alcohol either of them are getting around here.

“What do you mean?”

He shrugs. “We’re not actually going to kill each other.” he waves his drink out towards the cave entrance where the bases sit. Shouts and gunfire can be heard all the way from here. Shenanigans galore.

“How do you know that?” Church asks, before defensively adding, “We could kill you if we wanted.”

“Yeah, if any of us actually wanted the others dead, we’d already have a couple of bodies in the gulch.” Grif stretches his hands out behind him, burying his palms into the moist sand. “And look at that, your guy got promoted,” Grif waves a hand at Church, talking about his old sergeant. “and none of us are dead.” He juts a thumb back at where red base should be outside. “It’s obvious none of us want to be here.”

“Yeah.”

The two sit back. An easy silence settles down like dust on top of the pond. This is what it was originally. A quiet place to escape the idiots from blue, and the psychopath known as Sarge.

Of course, it couldn’t stay quiet. Not with Church here.

“You’re smarter than I thought you were.”

Gee, what a great guy. It’s no wonder Texas dumped his ass. “Simmons is the smart one. I’m just too lazy to bother with this fight.” Grif lays back, letting his tied-up hair act like a pillow.

laughter is a decent opioid - a chorus trilogy chatfic

Chorus is a shitshow.

Good thing Freelancer armor comes with Skype pre-installed.

After a ton of work, the first chapter of a collaborative chatfic between me and the AMAZING @illusion-of-sea-axes is finally up. The fic takes place primarily over Skype during the Chorus Trilogy, though will eventually diverge from canon.

We spent a ton of time working on the tone, and I spent even more time on top of that getting the formatting right. I'm really happy with how it came out.

Chapters: 3/22 Fandom: Red vs. Blue Rating: Mature Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence Summary: Blood Gulch Center for United Nations Transmission Schooling is a very normal school, by the standards of outer colonies in 2577. Boring, even - that's the thing about life on a ringworld, barren and detached even 24 years of human colonization after the eradication of Flood remnants and, consequently, all life from these once lovingly-cultivated oases of biodiversity from across the galaxy. Its students jump at a chance for some teenage rebellion at a party away from the lovingly omnipresent supervision of F.I.L.S.S., and to meet the legendarily reclusive students from the colony's enigmatic military school. They get a bit more excitement than they bargained for.

Okay, so I’ve been working on this a few months and I’m very excited to post it! Next few chapters coming very soon. 

This is like 60% teenage all-girl boarding school dyke drama and 40% eco/cosmic/body horror weird sci-fi. The Southern Reach, The Rest is Silence, and Lost in particular live in my brain forever so that may give you an idea of the kind of weirdness we’re buckling in for here.

The Blood Gulch crew are teen girls for the simple reason that when I was a teenage loser lesbian I liked to imagine little stories with my faves all being queer girls and I’m writing those plot bunnies here. Also because I think “all-girls boarding school with sinister secrets” is the best setting of all time.

Plus, there’s supposed to be a little bit of an homage to, like, those iconic children’s/YA series with awesome young protagonists like Nancy Drew, A Series of Unfortunate Events, or Animorphs and their combination of grim happenings and/or serious themes with the plucky, relentlessly optimistic commitment of childhood to believing radical positive change is possible and that The Way Things Are is not The Way Things Must Always Be and finding the beauty and wonder in things adults have learned are strange and therefore frightening.
