I've been listening to the RWBY soundtrack religiously since I finished my viewing of the show in anticipation and excitement for Volume 9 in like a week. Anyways I kind of want to talk about the song "Hero" specifically just because it's Ironwood's theme but it's just got a lot of interesting layers to it that I think are pretty obvious upon first listen, but more that just kind of blow your mind if you listen to it multiple times.

The first obvious one I wanna point out is how this song goes from being a heroic anthem and rally, to almost a threat towards whoever Ironwood is speaking to. The very first part of the song before it really starts is like your typical melodious "hero" song, something you'd probably here at the dramatic climax of a musical when the hero has shown up and is ready to save the day or whatever.

The first part is also going to be the chorus of the song, and when you first hear it you're like "Oh so this singer dude is the hero and he's here to help whoever it is he's singing to, and he's trying to assure them that he can definitely do his job. Great, typical hero stuff."

But what starts as a comforting gesture, turns into an obsessive mantra throughout the song.

"Take my hand/ I'm here to protect you/ Nothing will stop me/ Understand/ There's no sacrifice that I won't make/ I'll risk it all to keep you safe/ Trust me to be strong/ I'll be your hero/ Just hold on"

throughout volume 7 we slowly see Ironwood descend into an obsessive craze to "protect" Atlas to the point where he goes from wanting to save people, to willing to sacrifice an entire city just to keep Atlas afloat and away from Grimm. In a way, the song is very much just paralleling his character arc in the show.

Though what I noticed about this song is how similar it is to the other "villainous" songs in the OST. Songs like "Sacrifice", "When it Falls", "Divide" etc all have references to war or how fruitless an effort it would be to fight back. In "Hero" , Ironwood goes from saying he will protect people, to trying to reason for why he is the only one who can save anyone.

"I've made my plan/ Hearts and minds may not agree/ Emotions topple strategy/ You can't believe in honesty/ That your children can win a war"

Here is the familiar doubt that is so often cast onto Team RWBY and Team JNR when it comes to beating Salem. Ironwood literally goes from talking like a hero in this song to mimicking the very villain he is opposing.

(it's also worth noting how while Sacrifice isn't at all about Ironwood...it sure does have lyrics that could also apply to his situation which is wild to me considering that song was written all the way back in Volume 2 T_T How deep does this rabbit hole go?)

I couldn't pick individual people, so I've listed, in order, my favourites from each of the 3 main campaigns. We've got out of place asexual loner with a heart of gold and a penchant for reason in a world of chaos in Cad; No Thought, Only Heart and Instinct for Grog; and misunderstood weirdo with a love of both the arts and a strong independant woman what don't need no man (but wouldn't say no to a woman if she were to try and fill that void) in Laudna

RWBY - Neopolitan

I love this little shit so much! And now that I fully identify as Non-Binary, having my favourite character be someone who can alter their appearance at the literal drop of a hat makes so much sense. Also, Ice Cream Aesthetic

God of War - Kratos (Norse era)

I liked the overarcing spectacle of the Greek era, and TC Carson was a fantastic Greek Kratos, but Norse era Kratos is just a whole other man and I am here for his growth. Christopher Judge conveys so much with so little; he's like the father I never had

Star Wars - Anakin Skywalker (Clone Wars era) / Darth Vader

If you think about it, he's a Gifted & Talented Kid that got pushed to the point of breaking. Especially when we got Season 7 of The Clone Wars and we saw the overlap of it and Ep.III. And then there's Vader. I have never really seen someone command a presence in everything he's in just by being there. He literally needs to *breathe* and that's most people done. He just shows up in Jedi: Fallen Order and everyone *knew* that we were fucked

Sly Cooper - Bentley

(I have to pick Bentley because apparently "The track 'Paris Rooftops' from the Sly 2 OST" can't be a character)

Joking aside, Bentley overcame his nerdy social anxiety and thrived when he had to face the world alone. And then when Clock-la happens and he becomes paralysed, he didn't stop. He adapted. I thrive to be like that eventually. But also, turtle: things going bad? Just jump into your shell

The Last of Us - Ellie Williams

Ah, my little Les-bean. Reminds me of a close friend, what with the arting and the guitar and the singing and the gayness

Sonic the Hedgehog - Shadow

An even darker and edgier speedy hedgehog? Yes please! But also, Shadow (especially in the games I played as a wee lad - Sonic Heroes & Shadow the Hedgehog) had a whole lot of uncertainty in his life and had to discover and forge his own path. Being told he's so many different things and having to decide whether that's what he wants to do and listen to one of their stories, or become his own individual person away from the pressures of everyone else

Dragon Ball - Future Trunks

What's that? My favourite Dragon Ball character has a hero complex, wherein he tries to prevent any ill-fate before it happens by going back in time to change the past, hopefully making his future a better place, only to find out that protecting them did nothing for him and he ended up sad and depressed anyway? .........nope, can't relate ......to the time travelling part

DBZ Abridged also helped by constantly drawing Doctor Who parallels with him, and that was one of my many childhood / teenage hyperfixations soo.....

Dead by Daylight - The Dredge

Got to give thanks to HighKingMargo on AO3 for delving into some lore of DBD that I wasn't aware of in their amazing fic "This Hunger, It Isn't You", but when I looked and really paid attention to everything, I kind dug the vibe of The Dredge. Long story short - it's a SUPER fucked up amalgamation of cultish despair that manifested as a shadowy mass of limbs and general ick. I'm not much of a horror fan, but of all the (non-license) Killers in the game, I adore this disgusting thing

Marvel - The Hulk

A man with a curse to be the worst version of themselves when pushed, so decides to live a life of relative solitude and ease for fear that the less people are around them, the better? And with that, the absolute power fantasy of having almost free reign to be as strong as I need to be in any given moment. Hmm, I guess I'll focus on that one. Though, I did be sure to try other songs in here that were not just 5D’s tracks. A lot of Sonic tracks funny enough I found fitting stuff I’d put on, hence why there is a few here.  

Some pop songs that fit his vibe were also included, along with the angsty RWBY vol 8 op. And Everything Stays embodies a lot about Yusei’s character, how things do indeed change but also stay the same. I

I'm feeling a lot of things right now about the rooster teeth situation. I stopped watching RWBY near the end of volume 7 for a variety of reasons (mostly poor writing decisions but also bc rooster teeth was trash tbh) but there was apparently a part of me that was still holding onto it. I put years of my life into the RWBY fandom in a way that I never have with another one. It really did consume me a bit. Half of my music playlists were filled with the ost and I spent hours analyzing and theorizing. One of my most popular tumblr posts is one comparing lines from one of the songs with gifs from the show. I've never put as much effort into another fandom as I did RWBY and I guess there was still that thought in the back of my mind that one day it would come to a natural end and even though I wasn't a part of it anymore I would still get to see what happens. But now it's very likely that we will never know and I'm feeling a bit hollow inside.

I've always been of the opinion that the Qrow/Clover thing probably could've worked but failed simply because they decided to make Clover a new person to Qrow rather than a person from his past.

I think it would've been much more impactful if Clover was one of the names on Qrow's contact list from Volume 6 when he was looking for Huntsman and Huntresses to help with the fight against Salem. Maybe Qrow tries contacting Clover but it doesn't work for some reason and when we learn that Lionheart had given all those names away and gotten a majority of them killed, it would then be assumed like "Oh no the Clover guy is dead too" (I also think it'd be easy for them to just add like one throwaway line to Team RWBY and JNOR when Qrow tells them this plan that he "knows a guy" in particular or he tells Team RWBY he knows a Huntsman named Clover who he knows could really help with this, maybe even when they're walking around Lionhearts school he could mention that Clover went here or whatever and that they used to be friends)

And then when we get to Volume 7 and meet Clover and the rest of the Aceops we get a genuine moment where Qrow is actually relieved and happy for once because someone from his past who he thought had died, didn't for once! This would also give Team RWBY some reason to trust Clover and the Aceop's and would've made that fight between Clover and Qrow way better, because in the end it's Qrow's own "bad luck" that gets Clover killed. (And then that could be the emotional crux of their story, that Qrow found one person from his past who made him happy, and he ended up getting him killed because of a difference in opinion, or "bad luck" instead of just Qrow pantomiming how "Clover was the best :(" when we just have no real proof of that.)

And if they already know each other, all those moments where they're alone could've been conversations about the past, and would've probably just come off better because most of them are just Clover going "We make a great team :)" and Qrow being almost close to tears because nothing bad has actually happened since he teamed up with this guy.

So yeah it was a missed oppurtunity in my opinion and kind of feels like maybe they had just tacked it on at the end with no real forethought. Or maybe they just ran out of time and couldn't really fit any Clover moments in the show. (Guy doesn't even have a song in the OST about him outside of maybe "War" and that one is really just for the Team RWBY VS Aceops fight)

Listening to the intro to "Hero" and all I can see is James majestically being lowered in scene- lounging on a crescent moon (wires visible and creaking) long luxurious locks and gown flowing in the breeze - as he extends his hand, fully relishing the extraness of the moment.
