In this Chapter. Ren points put that Yang uses humor as a defense mechanism.

We’ve seen this through out the series. Yang handles stress by humorous deflection or anger.

I’ve always believed she got both of these from Taiyang, her most consistent parental figure wo was dealing with the same loss she was. He’s yells when’d he’s worried and makes jokes to deflect from tragedy.

Yang’s already dealt with her temper, now she’d dealing with deflection. But I think it could go badly when she confronts the source of her rage and fear.

i really liked the framing in both of these scenes. Jaune and Yang are the most forward with theyre objections to Emerald joining them, both having been the most directly hurt by Emerald and my extension Cinder and Salem. they are also the ones who were most angered by Ozpins actins as well for similar reasons. 

where as Ren and Oscar are more willing to give her a second chance, both not having not being directly hurt by Emeralds actions (tho the camera does pan to Ren when Yang mentions beacon, likely thinking of Pyrrha which was a nice touch) and while Oscar has already been helped by two enemies already Emerald and Hazel, and Ren can read her emotions at all times.

Something I haven't seen talked about from the new RWBY episode (8.9) is that we learned a few things about Salem's powers and limitations. Most of them aren't a big deal but I still find them interesting.

She doesn't seem to have actual legs. I like it design-wise because it's very inhuman and sort of adds to the dramatic effect of her outfit.

She's not all-seeing within Monstra. I assumed she had the ability to sense everything within it, but obviously this isn't the case. I wonder if she can within Evernight.

She has to cover the full distance to go somewhere within Monstra. Like she can't teleport, dematerialize, melt into goo, etc to travel. Again, maybe Evernight is different.

She couldn't see through Emerald's semblance. I saw someone else mention that the way Salem says "semblance" when talking to her seems like she views semblances negatively, possibly because they're not "real magic." Still, it's an interesting limitation.

She doesn't seem to have very good defensive capabilities. She was easily damaged by Yang and Hazel and might be able to feel pain, judging by her screaming when Hazel set himself and Salem on fire. This could be for the same reason that Grimm are fairly easily damaged where there's not "bone."

She doesn't seem to have bones or flesh in the way humans do. The way her body changed when Yang set off her explosives, the stretchy arm, and seeing her regenerate all seem to indicate that her body is somewhat malleable. She might be entirely made of the Grimm goo that came off when Hazel punched her and when she heals. It could also be that it forms into bone and such, since she cracked her jaw, and that CRWBY chose not to show that (like for real her regenerating could have been a lot more "body horror" so thank you CRWBY for not giving me nightmares).

She has a variety of magic. It's not all Grimm related and isn't restricted to any sort of "theme." The beam attack, the wind, and the summoning glyphs have nothing in common. Salem probably has a lot of different "spells" she can use.

Again, none of this seems very important, but I just wanted to appreciate how much we learned about Salem in this episode. I'm also fairly certain that her current form isn't necessarily meant for combat and that she can change her body. This is probably just her default form. She might be more serious (and really pissed) after Oscar's attack and change into a different form next episode.

RWBY Volume 8: Chapter 9 - Witch

1. Yang has always coped with stress by letting her temper flare or by using humor as a cover. She’s already confronted the former, now she’d confronting the latter and allowing herself to be vulnerable.

2. It’s interesting that Jaune has no fear at all. I wonder what it would take to break him. I feel the spirit of Pyrrha is guiding him.

3. I think Oscar will fully merge with Osma by volume’s end. They keep bringing it up and Oscar using magic at the end just accelerates the process.

I really liked the Remnant version of Alice in Wonderland. Oscar really won’t be the same person after falling through the world.

I hope he does become a new person  who can keep his promise to Hazel.

4. Kinda disappointed Emerald didn’t get to ask a question. But maybe she’ll get the lamp back from Neo?

Neo, what are you doing? Is she going to ask about Roman?

5. Winter is in total depression mode and I’m pretty sure she’d doomed to go out with that bomb. She’s dutiful to the end.

6. Summer is totally going to have been turned into some sick experiment. They’ve been laying it on too thick to not have a huge reveal,
