"I don’t know who you think you are, but let me tell you who I am: I am the granddaughter of a hero and a child of a villain. I am a citizen of a fallen Kingdom and an heir to nothing. I will not be defined by my name because I will be the one to define it. I am Weiss Schnee."

i do intend to make a vacuo arc design for weiss to accompany pyrrha's, but first i had to get these brainworms out!
Tumblr media
as with my pyrrha designs, i tried to build this outfit around a theme: in this case, wings
iirc correctly, atlas arc was where she used her nevermore summon most, but regardless i felt it important that weiss wear a symbol of freedom in a place she feels oppressed
and of course, haircut: seeking control of her environment
while i despise the ballroom gown (a transition from skirts to trousers -- trading appearance for practicality -- instead of worse dresses is an agenda i will always push for weiss), i did want to embrace her darker colours. i see it as the thawing of an icy lake. i also kept the frills on her boots bc to me they were already reminiscent of feathers
side note, i love looking at ice dancer outfits for inspiration with weiss ⛸️

So, I have been engaging in an interesting discussion about RWBY’s handling of Ironwood, prosthetic and more recently and it gave me a bit of a realization.
One of the things critiqued was that Ironwood scorched up his arm/replaced it being used as a sign he was sacrificing more of his humanity. I can certainly understand that take but then I started ruminated on other facets of Atlas and the show overall.
Like how when Yang lost her arm she wasn’t thrilled to receive the prosthetic because it seemed like everyone was just pressuring her to be OK and jump right back into the fight again.
How Ironwood admires Salem’s seeming lack of humanity, her lack of fear, attachments and tries to emulate what he sees as her strength by being increasingly ruthless and willing to sacrifice ‘anything’.
Or how the Ace-Ops were never given time to grieve or even granted the ability to admit they cared for Tortuga. Instead their ‘missing part’ was just forcefully replaced with Marrow.
Plus how rather than letting Winter recover in anyway shape or form he just shoved her into a mobility aid. Not because he wanted to help her, but because she was his soldier and he needed to use her.
What I am getting from it, thematically speaking, is less about the mechanical side of things. And far more about being denied or denying one’s one pain, grief and healing.
The Ace-Ops can’t care about Tortuga, Yang has to start fighting again, Winter is not allowed to rest, Ironwood does not give himself time to heal.
If something is causing a problem, be it emotions, a limb, or another person, Ironwood/Atlas’s ideology demands it be cut out and replaced by force.
That’s what I think they were going for at least.

I was honestly kinda taken aback that Weiss was so sad about the fall of Atlas, because…well, was it ever really a home to her?
It’s where she grew up, where she trained with Winter as a child. But it’s also where her father abused her and her mother neglected her, where her family’s legacy became the most twisted and where Weiss was miserable growing up.
I wonder if she would’ve mourned so much if she hadn’t had a few good months there with team RWBY most recently. The time where they lived at Atlas academy as a unit again after being reunited, where they became Huntresses and started hatching a plan. Yeah, the events of Volume 8 were terrible, but they were also like three days total.
I hope Weiss realizes the reason she felt at home wasn’t because she was in Atlas, but because she was with her team and her friends.

I’d argue one of Ozpins mistakes was not pushing harder to make atlas abolish their militaries, for once he didn’t go far enough
Oh yeah definitely, but honestly it's possible the other kingdoms were more willing to do so and Atlas/Mantle wasn't, and pushing could've caused issues with Atlas's and Vales allegiance, especially so soon after the Great War

Something I noticed about JNPR/JNOR's fight against the full Team FNKI in V7 is how it arguably acts as a demonstration of how far they've come...but also setting up how far they still have to go, as well as their inability to fight against Neo, and also how Atlas' teaching style somewhat negatively affects them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the fight JNPR has against FNKI, it's telling how they're all fighting separate 1 on 1 battles, almost making this a parallel to the Ace Ops vs RWBY fight. Neon is even mirroring Ruby by making Nora angry and goading her into chasing Neon around the arena, arguably wasting a lot of energy doing so. Meanwhile, Jaune is fighting a ranged opponent with Flynt despite having no ranged weapons, Ren is fighting head on against Ivori, who can deflect all of his shots, and Oscar is fighting against Cobalt in close range despite Cobalt having an apparent advantage in strength and size.
Where the nuance lies is that despite being split up, FNKI still ultimately loses for several reasons.
One is that they haven't undergone the same level of growth that JNPR have, with Neon and Flynt still relying on the same tactics they used back in the Vytal Festival, with implications that it's probably the same for their other teammates. JNPR are just vastly more experienced fighters even if they aren't on the same tier as RWBY, with Oscar having the benefit of an accelerated growth due to his Ozpin collective to compensate for his relative lack of experience.
The other is interesting in that when FNKI is defeated, it seems like it was done by JNPR overpowering Neon's teammates. This stands out because it seems to go against the idea that victory cannot be achieved purely through strength...but in truth it actually is a demonstration of Atlas' ideology being applied through team JNPR...and sets up the reveal of such an ideology's limitations.
Atlas' ideals of using might to overwhelm your enemy works with JNPR vs FNKI because it's showing how that only applies when your enemy is WEAKER than you are, or has serious weaknesses to their abilities. JNPR, with their experience and bigger skillpool were at a significant advantage over the less experienced FNKI, which meant that even with the problem of being divided, they could still individually overpower their foes.
But this ends up having serious limitations when they go up against Neo later on. Not only does Neo have a lot of experience that dwarfs JNPR, but her fighting style is the fundamental antithesis to Atlas' philosophy because it's all about turning her enemies' strength against them. Trying to beat her with pure strength is an exercise in futility unless you just so vastly outclass her that she'd rather flee.
JNPR is shown to be trying to overpower her the same way they did with FNKI, only to fail to do much against her without having the element of surprise or a stronger fighter like Ruby or Pyrrha to compensate for their shortcomings. Nora basically gets thrown aside while Ren tries to keep using his frontal attack to no avail. The only times they manage to do anything to her is when they're not trying to overpower her, rather focusing on outmaneuvering her (Oscar getting the lamp back), or just simply stalling her with sheer defense (Jaune and his Gravity Shield Burst). Combined with the hectic situation around them, and it's no wonder they ultimately lose.
This limitation of Atlas philosophy is only further noticeable when you consider just how effectively JNR did against the Centinels in Episode 3, and that was BEFORE Atlas took part in their training. While Atlas tech and training did help them, it also arguably exacerbated some of their shortcomings that was somewhat mitigated before, whereas RWBY has been trying to overcome those kinds of shortcomings for quite some time.
Yup. The Atlas way is to train all members of a team separately and then have a leader send them where they need to go. It can help people become stronger individually but it is terrible where teamwork is needed.

A Weisscream Sundae Christmas!
Weiss: "On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me~!"
Sun: "The rent for the landlady~!"
Weiss: "Wait a minute, why do I have to take the rent to the landlady?"
Sun: "Because the last time I came up short she said I could pay it... a 'different way'. And then she started talking about how much of a cute boy I was!"
*Knock Knock Knock*
Willow: "It's TIIIIIIME~!"
Sun: "AAAGH!"
Weiss: "MOTHER!"
Willow: "Eep! Time to go, buh-bye sunshine!"
Weiss: "Get back here you old harpy!"
Sun: "Oh thank goodness! And here I thought I was in imminent danger of having my loins ravaged!"
???: "I am sorry about that."
Sun: "AAAGH! Winter! Where did you come from?!"
Winter: "The window."
Sun: "That's... weird-"
Winter: "But not important. I'd like to apologize for my mother's behavior, she's been... lonely these last few years. My father's demise and our family's fresh new start couldn't have helped. Try to forgive her."
Sun: "Oh, well, I can understand, water under the bridge I guess."
Winter: "Such a warmhearted young man my sister has found. She's lucky, I'm sure it wasn't easy getting her to let down her walls."
Sun: "Oh boy! You can say that again!"
Winter: "Now that I think of it, I've yet to ask how it is you wooed my abrasive little sister. I'd love to hear all about it? Over there. In your suddenly candle-lit bedroom?"
Sun:"Sure, uh that's... also weird."
Winter: *ushering him into the bedroom* "I can assure you you'll have a much easier time slamming through my walls than you did with my inflexible and underdeveloped little sister."
Doorknob: *CLICK*

Damn, the Atlas Military propaganda is real in this one. How hadn't I seen it before?
Tumblr media
The way you haven't even started and they're already encouraging you to join the military. Might as well put Ironwood as Uncle Sam.
Also “the most elite group of Huntsmen and Huntresses in all of Remnant” man they wouldn't stop arguing in the middle of a fight and got their asses beat by a bunch of novice Huntresses.

Nora: dad can I borrow dr banner?
Thor: dr banner is a person I don’t own him, what do you want him for anyways?
Nora: I just want to take him to atlas to see what happens,
Either nothing bad or Atlas would become ground zero for a giant monster movie.

Artificial Suns
Something I’ve changed for this AU that I find interesting, is that each city / kingdom has some sort of beacon of light that’s meant to be their makeshift sun.
Vale: For Vale, that source of light becomes Beacon Tower, and upon the fall of Beacon, Vale is then shrouded in darkness.
Tumblr media
Mistral: For Mistral, its source of “sunlight” are the lighthouses that can be seen around Haven Academy.
Tumblr media
Atlas: Atlas’ makeshift sun becomes the Amity Colosseum. Prior to the colosseum, Atlas most likely had no major light source due to snow storms obscuring visibility and thus making such a light source useless.
Tumblr media
Vacuo: Vacuo becomes the only kingdom without a light source due to the sheer number of sandstorms that would block out any light the people of Vacuo may try to sustain
Tumblr media
Smaller places like Menagerie and villages too far away from cities to see the lights also become shrouded in darkness. But they always find ways to beat the darkness whether by using street lamps, semblances, fires, or other means to sustain light and heat in their small homes. The one man from the Brunswick Farm captured some Apathy Grimm with glowing bone structures to use for both light and to keep his people calm. Of course, we all know how that goes. Safe to say Brunswick Farms is very well lit.

RWBY Watts’ Allusion
Tumblr media
Arthur Watts has been a very entertaining villain in the show. Making his official debut in Volume 4, Watts was one of the first new faces we’ve seen in the new era of RWBY. There are still some slight unknowns behind his character, so I will be doing my usual research on fairy tales/stories to see if one will align with Watts and make his motives a little more clear.
Based on my findings, I believe Arthur Watts is actually based on Jiminy Cricket, the talking cricket from the story of Pinnochio.
Tumblr media
Jiminy Cricket served as the conscience of Pinnochio, a toy puppet, and influenced him to be a good person to earn his humanity. In a previous analysis, I claimed that toys and puppets in fairy tales translate into robots in RWBY (Penny/Pinocchio) {Link Below}. So if toys are robots, then whoever Jiminy Cricket is in this story must be good with getting in the minds of robots. Enter Watts. He is an Atlesian Scientist who specializes in robot technology, having part in creating the Paladins, Penny, Mantle Security, etc.
Tumblr media
He was also aware of how to hack into these systems, getting into the “minds” of the robots/technology and putting viruses in them to influence them. With Penny, his allusion is especially evident, implementing a virus (bug/insect/cricket) in Penny to get her conscience under his control. This is in a way an evil version of Pinnochio & Jiminy’s relationship where instead of good things, Jiminy is influencing Pinnochio to do bad things.
Tumblr media
Ironwood is based on the Tin Woodman, a man who was cursed by a witch to slowly lose his humanity and became a tin figure. In a way, it is kind of a reverse telling of Pinocchio. We know that Pietro (Gepetto) is Ironwood’s top scientist, specializing in mechanical surgery, (Yang’s arm, Penny, etc.) So it can be inferred that he is the one who built Ironwood’s half body, which would make Ironwood Pinocchio #2. Only this time it’s the more Grimm version. Pinnochio fights with his conscience and squashes the cricket. This was translated into RWBY as Ironwood fighting Watts, having a “fight with his conscience” as he is losing his humanity (figuratively & literally), descending into madness from Salem, the witch.
Tumblr media
His rivalry with Cinder can also be supported. If Watts is the representation of consciousness, then Cinder is his perfect enemy. Cuz she’s literally insane. That’s why he's always teasing her. Watts (Jiminy) is now the conscience of Cinder, and he’s trying to tell her to make better decisions, but because Cinder is turning into a monster, she remains ignorant to his advice. In the original Pinocchio, after the cricket calls him a woodhead, the boy squashes him. This translates into how Watts calls her a “bloody migraine”, which later results in Cinder killing him, killing her conscience as she descends into Grimm madness. Jiminy Cricket has failed to teach Pinocchio #3 right from wrong and they lose their humanity (Donkey/Grimm Arm).
Tumblr media
And what about Salem? Why is this guy even associated with her? Well, Jiminy was appointed to be Pinnochio’s conscience by the Blue Fairy, so Salem (who ALSO represents Cinder’s Blue Fairy Godmother) alludes to her in reference to Watts.
Tumblr media
Watts’ page on the RWBY wiki claims that he is based off of John Watson from the Sherlock Holmes series. While this is true in some parts of his aesthetic (his English accent and outfit), his design also throws some nods to Jiminy Cricket, with his tailcoat, slim body, & umbrella (a very present item for Watts in Volume 7). Also, his aura color and eyes are green.
