Pokemon Journeys Episode 43. Let’s review:
1. Alright, our favorite TR Trio is officially included in the arc! And considering what we’ve been seeing in the arc previews, I can tell Gigantamax Meowth will be shown to us preeeeeetty soon. (please PLEASE writers, don’t skip out on the perfect opportunity of Gigan. Pikachu vs. Meowth!!)
2. I also love Meowth’s mouth mask. Our little rascal is doing his part in practicing social distancing. C’mon, Karens of the Earth. Take from his example.
3. Oh, hey! The Turffield Geoglyph! Why are you more pleasant to look at in the anime than you are in the games?
4. The gag of Sonia’s driving skills gives me life.
5. Ash and Leon working together to take down the Gigantamaxed Coalossal was very awesome to see. The two just work off together so well! Alsooooooo........ Leon’s Dragapult with Ash’s Gengar....... both being in the same frames a lot....... OH MY ARCEUS, MY OLD PARALLELS POST.
6. Hmmm. Goh reading the Sword and Shield legend, him and Ash encountering the Sword and Shield doggos... Gee, I wonder where this is going.
7. The flashbacks depicting Sonia and Leon’s childhood days were not only adorable, but I also love how it fits Ash and Goh’s whole dynamic as well. Like Leon, Ash is a far more skilled and experienced battler than Goh, and not only is he on his way of being a champion of the Pokemon World Championships, but Goh has also seen multiple how popular Ash is as a trainer in many other regions. In due time, Goh might feel Ash would become too good to work with him anymore, and since we know Goh is very dependent on his friendship with Ash, this whole parallel might encourage the improve himself with his own abilities so he can always maintain his close connections with Ash. (Leon’s Charizard as a Charmander is also adorable sry just had to throw that out there fite me)
8. Coa-Coalossal, where are you going? Ashy boi just defended you from being harassed by those stupid butthead miners after you turned back to normal. He can clearly be a good father for you, plus he has one extra slot on his team, so where are you going? Please come back. PLEASE!
9. I love Pikachu already being on the edge around Chairman Rose and Oleana. The two have experienced these type of shenanigans involving fake-ass jerks before, so it’s bound for Pikachu to feel that way. (I’m looking at you, Lysandre)
10. Okay, give or take a few more feet with the Wishing Star, it would’ve been GG for Sonia, Goh, and Raboot.
11. Professor Magnolia!!
12. I don’t know why, but at the beginning of the scene where Rose and Oleana offered Ash the chance to train aside them, I got Lysandre-Alain vibes from the XYZ series... as well as Pyrrha-Ozpin Fall Maiden vibes from RWBY Vol. 3. Oh dear. Thankfully, cause Ash is a good boi who knows his own styles and passions, he refused. Great job, you precious dork. Oleana’s death glare made me laugh my guts out, too.
13. Sobble, ur a q-t.
14. Gigantamax Garbodor’s design in the anime was honestly pretty cool, even more so than the games for some reason.
15. When Sonia gave Goh a Dynamax Band, I initially felt a little unsure on that part, considering Goh’s lack of experience in battling on a general standpoint. (then again, considering factors like the Sword and Shield legend of Gigantamax Cinderace, it was inevitable, but I just feel it’s a little too soon) The battle between Dynamaxed Raboot and Gigantamax Garbodor does seem pretty promising though! (lol, we’re literally getting a trash fire next episode)
Overall, while the episode was a bit exposition-y, especially Goh’s parts, like the last episode, it was good exposition, considering there are many people who haven’t played the games, so they’ll need all the info they can get. Seeing Ash and Leon work together, while a bit brief, was still pretty cool to see and the friendships Ash and Goh are establishing with Leon and Sonia are a super nice touch to their own parallels. Chairman Rose’s slow-but-surely descent to madness was another nice touch that they’ll building on throughout the arc.
I would rate this episode a nice 7.9/10. A little exposition-y, but again, it was GOOD exposition and the comedic moments and small action scenes more than made up for it!
I also say ‘also’ and ‘not only’ a lot oh arceus pls help me

Cinder vs Adam
Fair warning: This isn’t a theory post about a Cinder vs Adam fight lol. Because we all know Cinder would win right?
So I love Cinder... Shock and awe I know. And I hate Adam, as most do and should. But why do I love Cinder and hate Adam? They’re actually pretty similar in terms of their attributes as villains. Both are liars, manipulators, and murderers who only seek power above all. They both have an obsession with a member, or members, of Team RWBY, Ruby for Cinder and Blake and Yang, mainly Blake, for Adam. And they’re both skilled fighters with swords and/or bladed weapons... A smaller similarity but still a similarity.
So again, why do I love Cinder, and hate Adam? The difference lies in their actions and personalities. Cinder is always confident in her plans, even when WE know it ain’t gonna end well, you may say that just makes her delusional. I disagree. I think she’s earned her confidence. She devised the plan defeat Amber by herself, without Salem’s help besides the beetle, claimed half of the Maiden powers, defeated and killed a world renowned fighter, and brought about the Fall of Beacon. All that was orchestrated by her, by herself. She ONLY started to slip when she got blasted by Ruby’s Silver Eyes. And THEN she started to lose herself.
Adam on the other hand has always been a fuckin... mess. We’ve never seen anything that makes us feel sympathy for Adam, we only saw his SDC brand, which, yes, horrible. But... be honest did you REALLY think “Aww poor Adam...” Or was it “Oh he’s just showing it to make Blake feel bad .-. What a dick >_>”. The only time we see him as “Good” is the Black Trailer. And I mean even then..... he’s actively stealing cargo off a train and is fully prepared to kill the crew members, who did literally nothing 😶. Hell! He even got his OWN character trailer. If they WANTED to portray Adam as a sympathetic villain, THIS was their chance to do so. But uh... They kinda didn’t. They just showed us more of what we already knew. That Adam is a sociopath, a murderer, and a manipulator who clings DESPERATELY to his grudge against humanity.
Cinder, in comparison, didn’t start to lose herself and go crazy until AFTER she miscalculated and underestimated someone she viewed as beneath her. Also ANOTHER similarity between Cinder and Azula .-. How do I keep finding these I swear I didn’t write that with the intention of finding another Cinzula parallel ._. Awesome stuff :3
ANYWAY Adam is emotional as FUUUUCK, and he always has been. Adam’s emotions don’t let him think clearly. Because like I said in my 2nd hot take post, if Adam WASN’T deranged in any way, he would been able to beat the Bees. But because he was blinded by his rage, he was sloppy. Cinder, prior to volume 5 I’ll say, never showed her emotions. She was cool, calm, and collected. For the most part lol. But even WHEN she shows her emotions, you FEEL something. Be it “Haha you deserve it bitch >_>” Or “Poor thing...”
Take her ENTIRE backstory. Like with Adam, that’s the only time we’ve seen Cinder as sympathetic. Intentionally anyway lol. And with Cinder’s backstory, there was a WHOLE shift in how the fandom viewed Cinder. Before liking Cinder was something of an oddity but now there are more people who DO like her and new people in the I Stan Cinder club. If you are a new member of the I Stan Cinder club welcome and I hope you got your free cookies :3. Anyway, before Cinder wasn’t much of a discussion topic besides “Oh. Cinder relies on her maiden powers too much. She should stop relying on them as much as she does >_>” or “Cinder mistreats her allies. She should stop <_<” Which, both are true lol. But like... I dunno now with her back story revealed, there’s more INTERESTING discussion around her with like what could have been if Rhodes was around more or if he didn’t try and turn her in, people noticing how her sword in volume 5 was identical to Rhodes’ sword, a new debate of if Cinder SHOULD have killed her family or tried to wait just a little longer until she could take the huntsman exam.
Adam’s character short...... didn’t do any of that .-. if anything it showed us MORE reasons to hate him. Hell, I’d watch that trailer more for Sienna Khan. If it were a Sienna trailer? Iconic. Okay, fine, I’ll be a little bit more fair. We DID see the start of the Grimm masks... But that doesn’t make ADAM interesting.... It makes TRAILER interesting. Besides we kinda already knew Adam started from Blake back in volume 2. We saw that Adam was fully prepared to kill people, and when he was praised for it by Sienna and the other Faunus around him, it only increased his desire to spread this method of intimidation even more. And that... is not... Good >_>. In my opinion, Cinder’s backstory did it better. You can say it felt outta place if you want, but you have to admit it WAS a damn good sequence. The contrast between Cinder’s life in Mistral, being pushed around and punished when she DOES stand up for herself. Compared to the sheer hope and AWE on her face when she arrives at the hotel, thinking her dreams are about to come true, only to find out that she’s only going from one environment of abuse to another. We FEEL for her naturally through out the whole thing. To the point that MOST of us consider Rhodes, the huntsman who WAS doing his job, the bad guy.
In conclusion: Cinder is a complex character with a tragic backstory full of abuse and a lack of power. Adam... I’m just gonna say it, is a brat >_> He’s used to getting what he wants, from Sienna and the other faunus in the white fang, from Blake, he’s USED to getting praise for the horrible things he does and when he DOES get called out, he’s used to being able to talk himself out of those situations or BEING talked out of those situations. When he DOESN’T get what he wants, he basically just throws a massive temper tantrum. I’m not saying Cinder doesn’t have her own share of temper tantrums, she does lol. But they come from a more... I dunno how to explain it, you just UNDERSTAND where she’s coming from. I do anyway.

Friday Nights Are For Fighting (RWBY AU Snippet)
Yang glanced at the large grandfather clock. She would have preferred something a little smaller, but Ruby had always found the mechanics of the clock fascinating. She’d even given it a nickname. Gerald, the grandfather clock, had been with them for the better part of three hundred years, and Ruby had even taken lessons from a horologist to ensure the clock would be with them for three hundred more.
The clock was about to strike nine o'clock in the evening on a Friday night, which meant she was about to receive her weekly visit from the Vampire Hunters’ Association. Last week’s intruders had been a thoroughly disappointing trio who had accidentally blown themselves up when they’d tried to demonstrate the awesome power of gunpowder.
Now, Yang had no problems with explosives. In fact, she rather liked them. However, she was also a two-thousand-year-old ancient vampire who could laugh off being blown into thousands of pieces. The average vampire hunter was considerably less good at surviving being blown into thousands of pieces.
As the clock began to strike the hour, Yang took a moment to strike a suitably menacing pose at the top of the grand stairs that led deeper into the manor she and Ruby shared. Whoever the Association sent was unlikely to be much of a challenge, but appearances were important. A vampire hunter could afford to be scruffy, an ancient vampire with connections to the rest of the vampire nobility could not.
Right on cue, the doors of the manor burst open. She gestured for her servants to leave the area. Not all vampire hunters were considerate enough to try to avoid collateral damage, and some of the servants belonged to families that had served her for generations.
“Prepare to face your doom, villain!”
Yang smiled faintly as a pair of huntresses walked in. One of them was very clearly a Schnee. She’d faced enough of them over the years to spot them from a mile away. This particular Schnee was a little on the short side and very petite. However, her blue eyes blazed with righteous fury as she struck a pose by the ruined doors and jabbed one finger in Yang’s direction.
“Vile temptress! Tonight is the day your maiden-seducing reign of terror comes to an end!” The Schnee drew her rapier with a flourish. “I, Weiss Schnee, have come to personally strike you down.”
“Is that so?” Yang drawled. She pointed. “And who would that be beside you?”
Weiss winced. “Ah, right.’ She turned. “I would like to introduce my associate, Blake Belladonna. She will also be striking you down. That is, we will be striking you down together.” Weiss paused. “As a team.”
“…” Blake sighed. “Weiss, next time, let me introduce myself. You make me sound like your sidekick.”
“Well…” Weiss began. “I am the heiress to an ancient and noble clan of huntresses…”
“And I’m basically Faunus royalty.”
“Normally,” Yang said. “The Association tries to have only one protagonist on each team. It makes the whole pre-battle banter thing much easier.” She smiled. “Not that I’m complaining.”
She would never understand why huntresses had to wear such form-fitting or revealing clothing, but she was not about to complain. Weiss might not have the most buxom figure, but the trousers she wore did a fantastic job of showing off her legs while her corset emphasised her slender waist and bust. Blake, though, was a much tastier dish, at least in Yang’s opinion. With an athletic build that the form-fitting ninja-like garb she wore showed off to perfection, Blake was the very definition of delectable. Oh, and she had the most adorable cat ears too.
“Are you ogling us?” Weiss cried. “How dare you! Does your vampiric lechery know no bounds?”
Yang rubbed her ears. “Does she always yell?” she asked Blake.
Blake sighed and rubbed her cat ears. “Pretty much.” She shrugged. “But, yeah, we’re basically here to kill you.”
“You’re here to try,” Yang replied. “And, quite frankly, I don’t think you’ll have much luck.”
“We don’t need luck,” Weiss countered. “Taste the cleansing fire of my family’s magic!” She used her rapier to draw an intricate set of runes in the air. Ribbons of fire raced toward Yang only to stop as the ancient vampire held up one hand.
“Hmmm…” Yang grabbed one of the ribbons and tugged on it. It shattered into a stream of embers. “Not bad. Your casting speed was excellent, and the power behind the spell was great too. However, you really do need to do your homework.”
Weiss’s eyes narrowed. “Vampires are weak against fire. Everyone knows that.”
“Most vampires are weak against fire.” Yang’s magic flared, and flames erupted into existence around her, a maelstrom of heat so intense that the stone floor at her feet began to glow. “I’m not most vampires.”
“Hmmm…” Weiss rubbed her chin thoughtfully. “That could be problematic.” She sheathed her rapier. “In that case, I shall have to rely on Plan B.” She pulled a wooden stake out of a holster on her back. “Behold! This is a stake carved from a branch of the World Tree and blessed by the Seven Holy Maidens. Not even you, an ancient vampire, will be able to withstand its deadly power!”
Yang tilted her head to one side. “You’re going to try and stake me? What do you think I am, a garden variety fledgling in my first decade of vampiric life?”
Weiss stuttered. “Of course not! You are a vampire of unrivalled licentiousness whose lust has corrupted countless innocent maidens. But, as I said, this is no mere stake! it is a stake carved from a branch of the -”
“I don’t suppose you’ve got anything better than that?” Yang asked Blake.
As Weiss spluttered in outrage, the Faunus replied. “I was actually planning to kill you using the sealing arts of my people that have been passed down for countless generations and honed in the seemingly endless struggle against the horrors that assail my homeland.”
“Hmm… you know, maybe you are the protagonist in this group,” Yang replied. “You’ve certainly got a more tragic and inspiring backstory.”
“What?” Weiss leapt in front of Blake. “How dare you! I was in the middle of giving my speech! You can’t just cut me off.” She raised the stake high above her head. “You won’t be laughing when I drive this into your twisted, maiden-seducing heart!”
“Weiss,” Blake said. “Do we really know that she goes around seducing maidens willy-nilly? I mean… I know she’s a vampire, but we probably shouldn’t just accuse people of maiden-seducing without proof. It’s a fairly serious accusation.”
“…” Weiss’s jaw clenched. “She is a maiden-seducing fiend, Blake. She tried to seduce my sister last year.”
Yang guffawed. “Tried? I was honestly amazed by how flexible she -”
“Silence!” Weiss screeched. “After you defeated her, my sister left our clan. She now wanders the world as an exile. I will avenge her and -”
Yang made a face. “Oh… about that. She’s not exactly an exile.”
“What?” Weiss’s eyes widened in horror. “Don’t tell me you’ve turned her! You fiend! Was defiling her with your vampiric lust not enough? You had to turn her into a vampire as well? There is no end to your villainy, is there?”
"You know, I’ll be honest with you. She and I still, you know, enjoy each other on a regular basis, but I did not turn her into a vampire. She works for me now, taking out vampires who don’t obey the rules. She’s very good at it.”
The sound of Weiss’s teeth grinding together was loud enough for all of them to hear. “I will put an end to you, villain, and free my sister!”
“Weiss, maybe we’re not approaching this in the right way,” Blake began. When Weiss tried to lunge at Yang, Blake grabbed her by the wrist. “Weiss, calm down. You can’t let her get to you. For all we know, she’s just saying whatever she thinks will make us mad, so we lose our cool.”
“Oh…” Yang snickered. “It looks like the kitty has claws.”
“That’s it.” Blake stepped forward. “Give me the stake, Weiss. I’ll kill her myself.”
“It looks like someone is a little touchy about being compared to a cat,” Yang teased. “But if the shoe fits… or should I say, if the ears fit?”
It was a testament to just how fast Blake was that Yang only dodged her attack by about a foot. The dark-haired huntress simply blurred forward, and Yang stepped neatly to one side as one magic-enhanced foot pulverised the spot she’d been standing in. But Blake wasn’t done yet. Dozens of paper seals floated through the air.
“Nice kitty.” Yang patted Blake on the head and then flipped backward as a sword threatened to cut her in half. “Actually, bad kitty.”
“Stop calling me a cat.” Blake clasped her hands together. “Belladonna Sealing Technique: Hundred Explosion Nightmare.”
Yang tilted her head to one side as the paper seals rushed toward her. “You know, I really don’t think you’ve got a hundred of those seals of yours. And why do ninjas always shout out their techniques?”
Blake just smirked and pointed at the ground.
Yang looked down and smiled. Clever girl. Somehow, Blake had managed to transfer the writing from dozens of paper seals onto the floor where she was standing. “Not bad.”
The resulting explosions shook the manor to its foundations, blew out all of the windows, and sent every door in the vicinity flying off its hinges.
Weiss covered her face with her arm as the shockwave of Blake’s attack threatened to overwhelm the barrier she’d hastily thrown up. The other huntress was extremely skilled, and that attack had to have done some damage. As the explosions began to taper off, Weiss prepared to move forward when she realised there was someone else there.
“Oh, thank goodness Gerald is okay.”
Weiss turned. The woman standing behind her had dark hair and silver eyes, and she was holding the massive grandfather clock that had been near the top of the stairs with one arm. “Wait… who are you?”
The woman scratched the back of her head with one hand and set the grandfather clock down gently. “I’m Ruby.”
“Ruby.” Weiss nodded. “Oh. Wait!” She leapt back and jabbed her blessed stake in the direction of Ruby. “You’re an ancient vampire too! You’re the sister of that maiden-seducing, sister-corrupting, vampiric fiend!”
“You mean Yang?” Ruby asked.
“…”
“But, yeah, she’s my big sister.” Ruby smiled sunnily. “And, just for clarification, are you here because she seduced your sister or because she seduced you?”
“What?” Weiss squawked. “Because she seduced my sister! She has yet to lay so much as a single vampiric finger on my person!”
“Oh, that’s good.”
“It is?” Weiss blurted.
“Yeah, because I think you’re pretty cute, and it’d be a shame if she got to you first.”
Weiss’s eye twitched. “Don’t underestimate me, vampire! I am not some helpless -” Weiss stopped talking because she realised that something was wrong. She was no longer holding the stake that had been carved out of a branch of the world tree and blessed by seven holy maidens. Ruby was holding it, and Ruby and the grandfather clock were now on the other side of her. “What did you just do?”
“Well… I walked over with Gerald, he’s the grandfather clock, by the way, and I took your stake. Except I did it super fast. So fast you didn’t notice.”
“Impossible!” Weiss growled. “I am an elite huntress. I have honed my senses to their limits, and I am currently enhanced by at least a dozen runes. There is no way that -”
“Hmm…” Ruby was suddenly right in front of her with a smile on her face. “You know, you should smile more. I think you’d have a lovely smile, but I have to admit, you look pretty nice when you’re angry too.”
“Gah!” Weiss howled. “Stop doing that.” She drew her rapier. “Prepare for death, villain!”
“You keep calling me and my sister villains, but you’re the ones who broke into someone’s manor, knocked down the doors, and almost blew up Gerald. I’d say that makes you the villains, doesn’t it?”
“What we do,” Weiss replied. “We do for the good of society.” She lunged forward only for Ruby to dodge. Her next half a dozen blows met with similar lack of success. “Stand still, so I can stab you.”
“Okay.” Ruby stopped, and Weiss gaped in disbelief as her blade pierced right through the vampire’s chest. Still smiling, Ruby reached out and caught Weiss’s wrist in one hand. The strength in her grip was telling. Ruby was being gentle, but she could crush Weiss’s hand into pulp if she so chose. “So… now what?”
“Um… if I pull my rapier out of your chest will you let go of my hand?” Weiss squeaked.
“I don’t know,” Ruby said, not the least bit bothered by the rapier stuck in her chest. “You did stab me in the chest.”
“…” Weiss searched her mind for something, anything she could use to bargain her way out of this. Finally, her desperate mind latched onto the one small glimmer of hope she had. “I have a cookie in my satchel! If I give it to you, will you let me go?”
“If it’s a good cookie, I just might.”
Blake took several deep breaths as she waited for the dust to clear. Weiss was currently attempting to bribe another ancient vampire with a cookie, but Blake couldn’t afford to take her attention off the dust cloud for even a second. Ancient vampires were immensely powerful, and although she’d hit Yang the Defiler (a name Weiss had come up with) with enough explosions to destroy most vampires several times over, she wasn’t about to relax until she had confirmation that Yang had been defeated. At the very least, she should have taken major damage. if she hadn’t, Blake would be in trouble. Seals were difficult to put onto anything that hadn’t been prepared beforehand, and transferring so many onto the stone floor so quickly had definitely dented her magical reserves.
As the dust cleared, she caught a glimpse of a crater and then -
“Not bad.” Yang cracked her neck and stretched her shoulders. “I actually felt that.”
“…” Blake stared and tried not to stare at the same time. “Do you realise you’re naked?”
“And whose fault is that? I’m an ancient vampire, so I’m practically invincible. The same doesn’t go for my clothes.” Yang smirked. “What? Do you like what you see?”
Blake glared. “Yes.” Her eyes widened. “I mean no. I mean... shut up.”
“Yang,” the other ancient vampire shouted. “Put on some clothes. We’re not savages.”
“Hey, I had clothes. Blame Little Miss Kitty here for blowing them up.”
“Don’t call me a cat!”
“Does your perversion know no limits?” Weiss wailed. “Put on some clothes!”
“How about you stop staring?” Yang asked. “Unless you like what you see?”
“Shut up!” Weiss roared.
“Yang,” the other vampire whined. “You already have the cat. Let me have this one!”
“Stop calling me a cat!”
Yang laughed. “This is the most fun I’ve had in years.” She smiled. “Look, how about we make a deal?”
“I don’t make deals with -”
Yang darted forward too fast for Blake to react and seized her by the wrist. “You really want to make a deal.”
Blake’s eyes widened. “I… fine. What kind of deal?”
“Since it’s obvious that you and Weiss there aren’t properly prepared to fight two vampires of our power and standing, how about we let you go? You can come back next week and give it another shot. What do you say?”
“What?” Blake asked. “You’d just let us go?”
“When you’ve lived as long as I have,” Yang replied. “You come to treasure fun moments like this. I imagine I’ll have even more fun if you two have a chance to prepare a bit better.”
“Fine,” Blake hissed. “Weiss, we’re going.”
“But…”
“Weiss, we’re not going to win this today. We should withdraw and come back later.”
“Okay.” Weiss sighed. “You’re right.”
“Wait…” the other vampire said, holding one hand out. “Before you go…” Weiss handed the vampire a cookie. “Thank you. And, just to be clear, are you coming back next Friday? I’d like to be around since this was so much fun.”
“Yes,” Weiss said with a sigh. “We’re coming back next Friday.” She paused dramatically. “So enjoy the last week of your lives, villains!”
“…” Blake stepped away from Yang, and the vampire let her go. “Weiss, that would be more intimidating if they hadn’t basically kicked our asses.”
Ruby watched the two huntresses go and smiled. “That was fun, wasn’t it, Yang?”
“Yep.”
“So… about next Friday, are you going to call Winter back?”
“Damn straight.” Yang snickered. “Maybe I’ll ask her to come in a maid outfit too. That would just drive Weiss nuts.”

Author’s Notes
Vampires are serious and noble creatures, supernatural beings of terrible might and grand demeanour. Or most of them are. If Ruby and Yang ever became vampires, they would definitely not be the most conventional vampires.
Consider this a little nod to Halloween. We’re not far off now.
You can find me on fanfiction.net, AO3, and Amazon. Please check out my newest story on Amazon. It’s called Monster Whisperer. If you enjoy my sense of humour you might also want to check out Attempted Vampirism, or The Unconventional Heroes series.

RWBY 7 - 3 “Ace Operatives” Thoughts
So thoughts...
BOO!!! they didn't work on stuff themselves.. although if it was Pietro and not just random scientists, I'll let it go :) And i'l give him props for using the Amity fights footage (i'll talk more on weapons later)
Oh, dust mines, launch site... ghiest, oh that's gonna bring back some memories
God Nora being so giddy about her stuff puts a smile on my face
and the Blake/Yang nod, the first of so many bumbleby touches this ep
They're really trying to hit hard again with Jaune and that sash, though it was a good set up for his hair cut (since I wouldn't really think of cutting it now when he's in a cold climate ideal)
Another very slight, but nice detail about having Yang be actually armless, not just fixing it while it's on her. We need more points like this, or maybe i just like the idea of it, but having those details shown off and not forgotten is nice. Also that's a beefy arm, though I swear it looks larger in the intro?
Again, having Blake have an onscreen notice of her hair leads well into why it's cut (though not showing it on screen? nor how/why her weapon's fix being gold... missed opportunity , truly)
WAIT??? Ruby got a NEW cloak? BOO, I would have thought her current one was still the original, has she been swapping it with each outfit? but, all the cuts and tears, the detail and history from her past fights, lost :(
I'll talk about the Oscar scene when it shows up, not here
Again, lovely intro to their new looks, but... could have been more. Showing them actually zip things up, buckle them in, cutting their hair themselves. Just lots of little details that would have added so much
I'll say it again, I think Yang's new glasses look weird.. too anime for the actual show style, but, I guess they 'work' ?
Also they all look to Ruby, this is her mission, her shot to call, she's back with her team (just rwby) for the first time so it's good to see them keeping the team dynamic, she was leader for a reason.
OH THIS SONG IS A BANGER!!!! also, totally a Weiss song (it said mirror)
Bunny hopping Ruby :D adorable
SUMMON SWORD SURFING!!! Finally
Blake really making the use of that ribbon, a little detail they again seem to forget about during most of 4-6 until it's necessary (running from adam in V6)
And... yep, no nonsense Yang sticking with the classics, recoil  (( I take it back, Yang's arm is the same as the intro, though I still think it somehow got bigger than when she put it on ))
And end it all on an amazing pose shot
Okay Ace ops time. Harriet, let me see what that little backpack thing do. But for serious, rolling only stops you from getting hurt on small drops, not several hundred foot... Marrow though taking a similar root to Ruby, seeming to ride it down, but he's doing some troll physics there, "stand on chair, jump off building, jump off chair at last moment, you only actually fell 2 foot"
Also, boomerang, gun? Honestly I kind of dislike the generic gun looking form, would have been cooler if it didn't change, but just had a little barrel pop out an end when he needed to shoot.
And now JN- OMG ELM YES, Loving the attitude. Oh Vine what's that on your back? you wielding an expanding throwing star (three pronged)
erm, right... JN_R
so, we got, some sick new looks, Ren's ponytail especially. Jaune's hair (i was one to hate it at first) in motion looks great, the concept art didn't do it justice. Also holding his sword on his arm..... kind of reminds me of @kumafromtaiwan's design for Jaune
"okay Jaune, you got this, it's not gonna be like Beacon all over again"
Oh, is he gonna use his shield like a plow, smashing through rocks, or maybe as a wing and glide do............................
DID JAUNE JUST FORTNITE PARACHUTE SHIELD HIS ASS TO THE GROUND?
Moving on though, yep, Hard light dust was a genius move he would have stuck in his head from Argus, and opens up the question of adding (what i'm dubbing) Shield Shield, with his V4 Nuckelavee Sword Sword, to make hard light blades.... SWORD SWORD SWORD???
a quick little peak at his shield, the emblem lighting up as he shoots a blast to bounce him from hitting the floor, that better be used later too.
And another amazing pose shot!
Oh Elm, you really need to work on your social skills. Actually maybe all the Ace ops do?
POUTY NORA!!!
and, good luck bad luck duo for the final team, this'll be fun.
NEW SCROLLS! Love them, slim and cool, and with new team icons (c'mon girls, smile for your picture)
and that detail on how Ruby zoomed, Weiss had to summon, and Yang had some energy stored up, so their aura is down a bit, but Blake is 100%
THE EARS, THEY SENSE BEES
Oh Yang, adorable goof
Oh Blake, also an dorable goof!!!
And Marrow is indeed the baby of the squad, you said it well Harriet, if a tad harsh?
Weiss no, this is a bad place for your name, but you're here to make it a better one, to fix that remember!!
Has.. has no one taught Ruby to project her aura to keep her warm, or at the others just dealing with it better? Either way, same Ruby, i hate the cold
Okay, yes, Oscar chat time
I don't know what to say, I agreed with it the whole time. Atlas is in a mess, there are good and bad times to tell people, and it's nice that Ruby has her intentions, but this may have been the same path Ozma first took, hiding things "for now" but never finding a chance to tell the truth later... they just need to keep it in mind.
And Oscar, please look after the Relic, I can already see red flags over your head the moment you took it, be that from Ironwood doing shady shit, Watts/Tyrian stealing it, or Ozpin popping back up to use it's last question.
OH, Clover, hitting a man hard with that, bringing up STRQ :/ all those fanfics of Qrow ('s semblance) being behind Summer's death, they all feel more realistic
I almost forgot, Qrow's looking snazzy too, those cross buttons, the eye/feather emblem embroidery in the sleeves. No... no necklace though?
Oh god Qrow's getting shipped with everyone this volume it seems. Good catch Clover.... I MEAN LITERAL CATCH
Halfick? Halphr... what did he say? Don't bullshit me captions, that wasn't alpha
REN!!! PAY YOUR GIRLFRIEND SOME ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!! Jaune you dork, nice try?
Another great Bee moment, Yang too can sense a disturbance in the force.
Weiss this is great, but can you keep your emotional daddy issues and the racial discrimination of a whole people a little more separate. But it's nice to again see you trying to make some amends and distance yourself from being.. well, 'Jacques' and his actions
OOF, Marrow coming in, hitting hard, and then acting like he's.... a millennial "I'm just a teen who does research, what do I know, boomer"
this scene though. Issues and history of faunus oppression, followed by a Schnee apolagy, and a faunus using her traits to help fix the past for a new future... that's some symbolism
Oh, a jump scare, good thing about Blake's semblance there too
HARRIET YES!!!! BIG FISTS, JUST WHAT I WANTED!!! PUNCH THAT ROCK
And RW_Y right behind already running before the rumbles settled to help their girl
I LOVE THE GRIMM IN ATLAS. don't get me wrong, Deathstalkers are still top tier, but these things are awesome too
and now we get to upgrades!
Nice, so Yang has some trigger-able explosives, so she doesn't have to rely on her semblance to protect her when she's using his shotgun blasts
A subtle little thing there, Weiss being able to shoot an icle, not doing so from a glyph, but from the gun part of
Myrtenaster directly
Okay yes, this bugged me for so long. A scythe is a big weapon, the weight is in the blade as much as it is the handle, so having to turn it around all the time would be unwieldy and difficult in combat, so just a tiny upgrade like this is both smart, and amazing for Ruby to have realised she needed
Although I still don't get how shotting a bullet down the barrel, can give her swings an initial boost of speed........
Marrow really out here flying though the sky like he's on a zipline? though the buzz saw boomerang is, again, brilliant
Oh................ So the boy who cried wolf, can pause time? I erm- actually hold on, I need to figure out how that's logical......
I'm just gonna guess it's more "Harriet is moving so fast, he did this for dramatic affect XD
JN_R once again, taking a moment, a little nervous but willing and--- now they're very much not nervous, doing their thing, never first to run in, but never first to run away either.
Also, Vine has a stetchy arm semblance, and Elm has rooting feet semblance. Ye they make a good team (i ship them)
THERE'S THAT PURPLE SHIELD BLAST
And finally StormFlower is getting some love. I don't think they look different, but having those blades be used in more various ways... grapples were a great idea
and again, Nora using that spiked back of Magnahild for more than a place to stand when she launches herself, loving it!!!
Oh Jaune, being nervous dorky, Nora a little ashamed? or ready to be.. and Ren, quiet as ever (i think he's kind of looking up to Vine honestly) don't worry though, you kids did good
OH Harriet... you don't wanna be left out of the action do you :) RUBY YOU DORK! And that little back+forth was actually hilarious
Hmm, I was always wondering how a fishing rod could be a weapon.. i guess pulling a grimm in works, but what was your plan then, to punch the Ghiest?
OH MY GOD THAT ANIMATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
again, what are you doing Clover? At least Qrow knows his semblance, acting all "i'm gonna look around, things could easily go wrong here"
Good luck bad luck eh? OH MY GOD Qrow don't make that face, the people are gonna ship you two even harder now!!!
And the hammer duo charging in first... ye Elm/Vine is just Atlas' Renora, and I love that dynamic
oh, weird dust draft from Ren stopping, sweat boiling on the rocks... this room is gonna be interesting, mess things up a bit? fluxuating gravity, hot and cold spots maybe??? Ah yes, dust energy... makes sense
And Marrow in the background while we hear him on the coms, just a great little look at how Vine seems to be "distant" from the moment, doing the whole, Ren style of vague-speak
Ye it is kinda empt-- oh. Also good work having not just the face move, but the whole midsection being rotated... kind of as if, the face is stuck to that one position... COINCIDENCE?
Erm, does this one seem bigger than the V4 Ghiest?
And now we see Ruby trying to act as leader, pause to think, to come up with a plan, where as the Ace (while more experienced) seem to have both a plan on how to take it out, and might also be a little to reliant on Clover, knowing his semblance will fix any little issues
Oh that trumpet, a very self-knowing victorious tune.
And again, Vine and Elm doing a whole of semblance work, shame we don't see them use their weapons a bit more here, same with Marrow though not using his semblance (whatever it is) at all.
HEY WAIT. those black parts weren't there earlier, nor did they appear on the V4 Grimm until it needed them to pull toge- oh... they stretched the limbs to force both a space to cut them, and for the grimm parts to sort of 'be revealed'
And another eye colour semblance indication. Loving the runners pose Harriet does too. She's not time-pausing fast... (I take back what I said about Marrow's semblance earlier?) but things do act slower, even while she's running quicker than we'd see as normal in that moment. It's not time-pausing, but it's very very fast. And the motion blur trail!!, just a tiny effect, but it adds so much detail
Marrow really is the child of the squad, he's the one to make a mistake, but again- kind of had to rely on Clover there.. Interesting to see how things pan out when he's inevitably killed, or trapped, or just isn't there
Little details here and there. Vine using his semblance not just to grab, but to push the grimm back. Harriet taunting it to get it's attention and then getting out before it can hit her (but late enough that it keeps it's attention on her and really slams it's fist down). Elm again sticking to her name, rooting that fist down, being basically an anchor in all her actions. And Marrow... throwing his boomerang
UGH.. that little medallion touch pisses me off somehow, it's so pretentious? but anyway, he had a good idea, pulling it out by it's mask, kinda really relying on his semblance to get between it and the ice chunk without bouncing off anything. Again, very semblance reliant group
Erm... she punched the grimm.. but i wouldn't say it's dead.. are we gonna ignore that??? IT'S GONNA RETURN LATER I CAN PROMISE YOU THAT
Vine again grabbing dust, would have loved to have seen Elm basically kick one to stick it to her feet instead of just catching (or pinning herself to a wall to catch it, as if it was too high to jump and catch)
And Harriet going in for the catch, only for....oh.. that's the first thing RWBY or JNR did this fight? (also no weird dust affects, i feel upset)
But ohhh, her semblance isn't speed. I had this same issue in last volume, that her semblance early on was supposed to be speed, and yet she uses it to fly, to separate into several for moments, and she can 'merge' with others to carry then, when like for Nora in V4 her reaction speed should have been way too slow to really be ready for when she was basically thrown at the previous ghiest
AY yep, I'm shocked if Ruby has control over her eyes, she never tried to flash them off during this whole scene... but again, after Maria's story, hiding them from people we don't fully trust is better
And another little bee moment, Yang flirting with them puns
Omg! Elm carrying Ruby, Yang and Nora dancing, love this group dynamic
Hey, it's that guy from last episode, why are we... Robyn?
huh, kinda spooky... flickering lights... Robyn, watts, or...
TYRIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why are you not wearing your coat, it's cold remember! but that entrance, reminds me again of that "Cheshire cat inspiration" people first thought of back in his V4 reveal
HIS EYES!!! So whatever he does that triggers them is still apparent, and his stinger either still uses his own venom, or it's semblance related
And that line. He's here to mix things up... either he's finally gonna kill someone and let the police find out (unlike last ep when his victim was in a building, it'll take time till that's discovered... oh wait, blood) or he's here for info maybe?

So Lucky To Have You
This is going to be an Oc x Canon Fanfiction, if you aren’t comfortable with that do not continue reading. Otherwise I hope you enjoy and maybe Heart and Reblog if you wish <3
Start At Chapter One
Tumblr media
Chapter 2
“Welcome students! I understand that this may be a bit out of the blue for some of you, but my name is Professor Violette. Some of you know me as Miss Lily, and I will be your teacher for hopefully the rest of the year. I had taken a short break to deal with personal matters, but I have returned and am completely eager to teach all of you.” Lillian stood in front of her class with a soft smile, eyes scanning the room and meeting both new and familiar faces.
“Now, in this class we are going to try something a little different. While yes this is a combat based class, it is a bit more...challenging if I must admit.” She started, walking across her lower floor to the large classroom that slowly went up with each level of step towards the student’s seats.
“We have a few rules here, you know the simple ones. Behave, Do Not doze off in my class, and if I seem to catch a moment of disinterest in my class where one of you seems bored or chooses not to pay attention, I have every right to call you to the front of the class and possibly embarrass you. It’s not certain, but it is always an option.” As she spoke she kept a calm look both in her mannerisms and the way she spoke. She finally stopped pacing, her belted black boots turning as she now faced the class directly.
“In my classroom, I am going to teach you how to protect yourself in any possible scenario. You’re going to learn to become more dependent on yourself and willing to learn from your teammates. Now that seems much like your other combat class, so why don’t we kick it up a notch?” Lifting her hand, Lillian took the chance to unbuckle the belts holding her weapons to her hands, loosening the gloves on her hands and slipping them off before placing the greyish purple gloves onto the desk.
“In my class our number one rule is No Weapons, and No using your Semblance.” The entire classroom reacted in mixed whispers and shocked expressions between everyone. Some seemed excited, others seemed incredibly confused and scared.
“You heard right, I’m going to teach you combat without any weapons or use of your semblance. I understand that may scare some of you, but all of you wish to be huntsmen and huntresses don’t you? Out there, passed these cushioned walls anything can happen. Some of you already know a little bit about that.” Lillian’s eyes locked on Team RWBY and Team JNPR for a moment before going back to scanning the rest of her class.
“In a life or death situation it’s not impossible for your aura to be broken and any next attack will do much more damage, if not kill you. Most would retreat as that would be the wisest option at that point. However, let’s say there’s an innocent that you have the possibility of saving. I can count at least on both my hands and feet some huntsmen and huntresses that would take that chance and risk their lives to save that innocent. It’s what the job is about, saving innocent lives that can’t save themselves. Keeping peace and protecting the balance of the world. Sometimes your lives are lost because of it, but all of you already knew that. Everyday we lose people that swore to protect us, protect our way of life. Today I see a classroom of the next generation fighting to become the next protectors of that way of life. And I want all of you to be ready when that day comes.” The room had grown silent as each student listened to this Huntress’s confident words about all of them. With a soft exhale, Lillian straightened herself and gave a big friendly smile.
“While this class is mostly combat based, I also will help with any of you that are in need of semblance training. Whether that be to learn how to shut it off, control it, or even activate it. While I am here to teach you not to be completely dependent on your semblance, I am also your teacher. A semblance is a wonderful thing that we all have, some more powerful than others. It should be considered your wild card, when backed against a wall you unleash this concentrated blast of power your enemy didn’t know you had. It makes it much more difficult for the enemy to get an advantage on you when you refuse to show them everything you have. Now..” She clapped her hands together, rubbing them a bit with an excited grin.
“Who would like to go first?” One of the male students rose to his feet, confidently coming down and introducing himself to the teacher. Lillian nodded, and instructed him to stand at the opposite side of the class in a sparring stance. Once she said begin, the student ran full speed to her and it didn’t take much for her to dodge his swings at her. Lillian slid and ducked smoothly as this young man swiftly swung his limbs in her direction missing most points but catching a few when she’d go to test his strength on an arm block or a wrist grab. This student, now starting to have to catch his breath, seemed more frustrated now and swung much more arbitrary motions in her direction. Finally, he turned his entire body to get one good angry punch in, only for Lillian’s eyes to glow brighter.
“Slip.” And with that simple one word phrase, the child lost his footing from the swing of his body and slipped. Lillian caught his wrist on the way down, his head dangling just a half foot from the ground.
“There, just then you used your Semblance.” The class whispered among each other as Lillian let the student go.
“Your Semblance is a more physical attribute yes? You use it to hone specific parts of your body’s strength so you can hit harder or run faster. When it comes to specifically focusing it on one part of your body it gives off this maximized feeling to your aura. I could feel it in your fist the moment you activated it. This is what I mean. If your go-to attack when frustrated is your Semblance, you’ll give yourself away much too quickly. I want you to learn to spar skillfully before even thinking about using your Semblance. I suggest asking a few buddies of yours to spar with you, and pay more attention in Glynda’s class. Thank you, that’s all for your turn.” The defeated student went back to his seat, much more hands showing in the air now. Student after student Lillian took to the center of the room and chose to fight herself. Of course most of the students didn’t get to, but Lillian promised to get to everyone in the next few days. With a huff, the student Jaune Arc fell to the ground. Lillian smiled and hummed a bit while thinking.
“Impressive, you didn’t use your semblance once. Not to mention you have potential in learning hand to hand combat. You’ll need work, but not to worry this is your first day of my class and you will have lots more time to train and practice. Though I did notice your aura is a bit on the weaker side. If you’d like I can have a student with exceptional aura and semblance practice help in studying. Of course whenever any of you need me I am right here so any questions you may have I’ll answer as best as I can.” She helped the boy up and watched as he went back to his seat with a bit of an uncomfortable adjust of his walk. Most of the students would be sore after her class. When she sparred she mostly blocked, but did take opportunities to swing at and flip students with higher skill levels in combat. Once the bell rang, Lillian smiled and clapped softly.
“Alright, that’s all for today, Thank you all so much for your volunteering today, and remember there’s much more of today coming your way. Remember that the dance is this weekend; make sure to have fun, but not too much fun as lots of you are going on your first missions on Monday. I’ll see you all there as a Chaperone.” Students began leaving the room off to their next classes, and without much warning a blast of red appeared next to Lillian.
“Miss Lily that was awesome!” Lillian looked to Ruby and almost by instinct ruffled her hair.
“Why thank you~ How did you like the class?”
“Honestly? A little barbaric.” Weiss Schnee cut into the conversation, rubbing her shoulder a bit sorely. Giving the girl a sympathetic look, Lillian patted her on her good shoulder.
“A little bit of bruising just means it’s working. Though I’ll admit I didn’t expect to have to hit so hard. You’ve got skills Weiss. Just try not to become so dependent on your toys. Wouldn’t want to panic when you’re out of a sword.” Ruby chuckled a bit at Weiss’s expense, to which the two left behind a tired Blake. Knowing what they’ve been off doing recently, Lillian left her alone for this class.
“So, you aren’t going to tell Ozpin what happened?” Yang asked, gaining Lillian’s attention.
“Oh I am, but I figured letting you four get a bit of recon done wouldn’t be the worst thing. Especially since you seem to always get in trouble anyway~” Ruffling her hair Yang grinned and pushed her hand away. A little bit ago Lillian had gone to speak with Yang and Ruby, catch up a bit for lost time, when she found herself at their door planning a recon mission outside of school. It was when Ruby started to drag Weiss out that they were found out and had to explain to the teacher literally everything. Instead of telling Ozpin on them immediately, she decided to trust these kids as long as they promised to be safe. Only for them to end up fighting giant robots from what she could guess is some stolen tech from Ironwood’s department. It was seemingly always something with these kids, especially from what she read from their files.
“Well, the gang and I are gonna try to get Blake to go to the dance. She needs a breather.”
“Good luck with that, she does need it. But I’m not quite sure she’ll accept it at this point.”
“Are you bringing anyone to the dance?” Lillian’s eyes seem to darken for a second, before she pushed it away with a smile
“No no, I’m just a chaperone. Maybe I’ll see you all at the dance. Just don’t make me have you escort you out or something. I hate being the responsible one.” Yang and Lillian did their handshake before the fiery blonde left. With a sigh, Lillian leaned onto her desk and began to pick up her gloves. That was when her scroll went off. She picked it up quickly, throwing it between each hand in a messy attempt to catch it, only to hold it close to her chest and steady it. Peeking at the message, she smiled seeing it was Qrow. It’s been a while since he’s responded again. It was a very common thing for Qrow to answer messages for a day or two, and then go off the radar for several weeks, to even months. While it was a bit tiresome, Lillian knew it was all part of the job.
“Hey <3 You said today was your first day back as a teacher right? How did that go?” Lillian looked around, before closing her scroll and pocketing it. With a quick scurry around the class she made sure everything was clean and proper before grabbing her own things and locking the door on her way out of the classroom. She didn’t take long to head back to her room, closing the door and plopping onto her bed. She then took the scroll out and reread the message.
“Really well! I think the kids like me, and Ruby is starting to warm up to me like when she was a toddler. These kids get in more trouble than we ever did though. >.<” While waiting on Qrow’s next message, Lillian stared out the window of her room, watching the sky above her. Yang’s words stuck with her about the dance. It’s definitely not by choice she goes to the dance alone, if she could she’d go with Qrow, but she knows that’s almost impossible. Another buzz of her scroll grabbed her attention.
“That’s great, yeah those two have been pretty much always into something since they were born. They’re brats, but good kids. So, now that class is over, what do you plan to do tonight? Maybe keep me company~? ;)” Lillian’s face heated up as she mumbled incoherent mumbles and squeaks. She should be used to this, but every day it seems almost brand new. She took a few minutes to think of her next words, before finally biting her lip and taking a chance.
“Maybe~ But umm, I was wondering. Do you remember the dances they have at Beacon? Like when we were young? They’re having one this weekend and I’m chaperoning. I know you can’t make it, but would you want to talk during it? It could be like...you know, old times.” Her finger was actually shaking by the time she sent that message. Did that sound dumb? Was she acting like a desperate teen wanting attention? Maybe she should just say never mind, it’s obvious he’s incredibly busy. Plus Ozpin doesn’t even know that they’ve been in contact since the last meeting. Small little thoughts continued to plague her mind waiting in almost agony for his next message, and then a buzz.
“Oh yeah? Wow I haven’t thought about that in a while. It’s almost weird to; us going to the dance. That was so long ago. Heh, yeah if I’m not hiding from the enemy I’ll send you a text. Or you know, too drunk to move. When is that thing again?”
“Sunday, pretty sure it starts around 7 or 8. I’ll admit it’ll be the first time I’ve worn a dress since I was a student here.”
“Whoa whoa you’re getting all dressed up too? I thought you swore against heels for the rest of your life?”
“I can wear a dress and not heels Qrow~ Besides, it’s been years since I’ve gotten to look pretty. Thought I might give it a shot.” There was a long pause on Qrow’s end, and while Lillian waited for Qrow to answer she pulled out said dress to give it a look over. A dark rich purple color matching her eyes with long sleeves made of lace and a skirt long enough to meet her knees, but short enough for when she full spins it would lift into a beautiful flower blooming shape. Touching the soft fabric she let out a sigh. She’ll have to keep this dress for later. Maybe Qrow can see it one day. Finally a reply.
“I mean, you always look pretty so that’s a lie.” This smooth motherfucker.
“Oh hush <3 I promise to keep the dress for later. I think it looks nice, it would be a shame if you didn’t get to see it one day.”
“I’m holding you to that~ Seriously though, I know I’ve been gone for a while. How are you doing?”
“I’m alright, I miss you. Things have gotten a little crazy here. Ironwood is here with his robot army, trying to convince Oz to basically go into war mode. Your nieces and their team have been investigating Crime Networks without permission while fighting giant mechs and basically a Faunus mob? (Apparently the White Fang is involved in this along with those Pawns we’re looking into.) And this has all been since around the time of me showing back up to Beacon. So yeah, typical week.”
“Ironwood is there??? Jeez, I feel sorry for you~”
“Ha ha very funny. Oh, and there’s two students that I’ve asked Glynda to keep an eye on. Really three, but only two of them ever go to class. I think...they might be those younger pawns we were talking about. I can’t say for sure and I don’t want to cause a scene if they are innocent, but I have a bad feeling. They look as if I had finally put detail to the silhouettes of my premonition! What if the enemy is right here and we don’t know? I just don’t want these kids to be involved so early, they have so much more life to live.”
“Well, I can’t say you’re right or not, but I can say to be careful. Definitely watch the kids while I’m away, and if things get real bad get the hell out of there. Have you told Oz about this?” Lillian bit her lip, glancing to the side trying her best to figure out a response.
“I’ve told him about my vision, and he’s surely noticed my reaction to the student files, but I haven’t made it too big of a deal yet. The festival will be here before we know it, and we have a dance Sunday Night. Not to mention he’s already busy with James here. I just...don’t want to cause an unnecessary scene.”
“Always thinking of others Vixy~ Well, I can’t tell you what to do. Just be careful.”
“I will. So, what are Your plans for tonight~?”
“Ooh nothing much. Hiding, drinking, maybe flirting with an adorable Vixen? ;) ”
“Well, I don’t see why not~ Want to video chat?” It only took about a minute before her scroll began to ring, a soft giggle escaping her lips as she answered. The screen flashed, loaded for a few seconds, and then Lillian made eye contact with Qrow. Her bright violet eyes shined as they saw the familiar red orbs. His hair was a bit of a mess, and dark circles under his eyes. He looked exhausted, but even in that state Lillian had to admit her heart was thumping out of her chest. He still held her heart quite tightly. He smiled slowly, a genuinely soft look in his tired eyes as he saw her.
“Hey~”
“Hi~ You look so tired.”
“Gee, thanks~” Lillian giggled, holding the scroll with sparkling eyes. She knew she had missed him, but now having him right in front of her on the screen, seeing him, she couldn’t help but get incredibly emotional. She grinned and subconsciously brushed her hair from her face.
“I missed you…”
“I missed you too Lily, wow...you look great.” Her cheeks reddened as she started to hide her face. The two took the time to just look at each other, realizing between the two that they haven’t really seen each other in months. Despite the fact they would talk sometimes, it didn’t hold a candle to them finally seeing one another.
“So, do I get to see this dress?”
“Hmmm, nope~”
“Aww come on~ Don’t leave me hanging~” Lillian rolled her eyes and stuck out her tongue.
“Oh you’ll pay for that~” Lillian and Qrow took the time to talk and joke around, as if they were students back in Beacon enjoying each other’s company between classes. Qrow took a swig from his flask, only a swig Lillian noticed.
“So what are you drinking tonight?”
“Brandy, not going to yell at me to stop drinking?” Lillian shrugs.
“I don’t mind a drink every once in a while. I just don’t like you to get shitfaced. I’m not going to control you Qrow.” Qrow’s softened eyes stared at Lillian for a moment, before staring down at his flask. Staring at it, he opened it and took another swig before closing it and setting it somewhere off screen.
“You’re way too patient with me. I wouldn’t judge if you just...you know, yelled at me for being a drunk.” Looking into his eyes, Lillian bit her lip thinking for a moment.
“Qrow...You have been drinking for a long time and you’re your own person. Plus, you’ve been through some tough shit, I get it. I’m not going to judge you for drinking every once in a while. All I can say is that life has good in it. If you’re drunk all the time you won’t remember all the good times. I would love to spend time with a Sober Qrow more often, but that is your choice to make. Just know that I will always be by your side. Okay?” With a little hum, Qrow nodded slightly staring down.
“Yeah, okay…”
“...Do you still want to see the dress?” He let out a chuckle and leaned on his hand, looking into her eyes once again.
“Are you actually going to show it to me~?”
“Maaaaybe~”
“You’re really gonna tease me with this dress~ Fine, I’ll bite. Can I please see this dress?” Lillian grinned coyly and hummed, teasing him by not moving from her spot.
“...Okay~” She got up and walked out of view, coming back a minute or so later holding the dress up to the scroll.
“Ta-da~! Doesn’t it look great?” She pretended to wear it, twirling in place and smiling like a child. Qrow gave such a soft look that he hasn’t made in such a long time, he couldn’t take his eyes off of her.
“It looks great, you’re going to look beautiful on the dance floor.” Setting the dress down, Lillian leaned onto the bed once again smiling,
“I’ll save you a dance~” She winked playfully, and Qrow rolled his eyes. Hearing a knock on the door, Lillian turned towards the door and froze in place.
“Who is it?”
“Miss Lily? It’s us, Ruby and Yang.” Lillian relaxed and smiled, turning towards the scroll and smiling softly.
“I have to go, I’ll call you later okay?”
“You better, talk to you soon Lily~” After the call ended, Lillian went to the door and answered to find Yang and Ruby in front of her. She smiled as Yang and her fist bumped and Ruby waved happily.
“Hey girls, is there something you need?”
“Nope, just wanted to come and say hi.”
“Aw that’s sweet. Why do I not believe you?” Yang and Ruby looked at each other with a big grin.
“Wellllll.”
“We were also kind of hoping that you could tell us something?” Lillian crossed her arms with a slight raise to her eyebrow.
“And what is that?”
“How exactly did you meet our dad?” Lillian blinked for a moment, looking between them before tilting her head.
“Well where did that come from?”
“You said you’ve known our dad and uncle Qrow since you all were in school together. We’ve been thinking about it for a while.”
“That and you seemed kinda bummed when you said you were going to the dance alone. So, we thought we’d come talk to you.” Lillian smiled softly and crossed her arms softly.
“Well, you don’t have to worry about the dance thing. I would love to have a date to the dance, but he is currently on a mission. But it’s alright, if you wish to know how I met Taiyang and Qrow then I’ll gladly tell you.” She pulled a chair out and sat down, noticing a look from both of them.
“Wait, do you have a boyfriend~?” Yang said with an accusatory smile. Ruby happily gasped and got closer, eyes sparkling.
“Is it a long distance relationship? Is it forbidden? How long have you known him? Is he absolutely perfect?” Lillian ruffled her hair and grinned.
“Well, you two are certainly nosy~ If you must know then I’ve been with him since we both were in Beacon. I’ve loved him for a long time. Qrow’s been my other half for years now-”
“Whoa whoa whoa!” Yang cut her off, the two very obviously surprised.
“You.. and Uncle Qrow?”
“Uncle Qrow has a girlfriend!?” Lillian’s cheeks turned bright red. Was she not supposed to tell them that? She figured it was obvious, but then again Qrow wasn’t around the kids that often, and neither was she, so when they were together it was rare they were together around the kids.
“Yes, Qrow and I have been together for….a very long time. I forgot that you two never really saw us together when you were younger. But yeah, I’m guessing you really wanna hear that story now.” The two girls sat down in front of Lillian, now looking like small children ready for story time. Lillian gave them a soft smile before slightly shaking her head.
“Alright, don’t twist my arm~” She readjusted herself for a moment, leaning back comfortably and preparing to sit for a while.
“Now I’m warning you, this is a long story. No bathroom breaks, no snacks, so be ready to sit for a while.” The two nodded intently, before Lillian smiled and took a deep breath.
“Well, it all started the first few days of the school year. It was my first year of Beacon Academy.”

The Era of Mediocrity
2019 was a really big year for me. It was the year that I really started taking care of myself and began moving towards a more mentally healthy situation. I started going out to events more often, filling my life with fun memories and awesome situations, got a good plan for the next few years of my life, and all in all truly grew as a person in a way that I hadn’t for a long time.
However...2019 was also the year that I realized that we are living in the Era of Mediocrity, at least when it comes to big budget companies that control most of the entertainment we consume. This is directed at the Walt Disney Company and the Pokemon Company, mainly, but on a more personal level I was made aware of this through RWBY.
RWBY opened my eyes to the fact that a lot of the entertainment I’d come to love over the past few years has become...less than stellar than how it once was. Between Volume 6 and now Volume 7, I have seen a terrible shift in the way the writing is handled. The plots don’t make sense, the characters no longer feel real, and the whole narrative of each Volume seems to bend to the whim of the protagonists, promoting their actions as good and justified when they are anything but.
In spite of that, I can’t say that RWBY is a bad show, because it’s not. The animation is stunning--for something that started out with such stilted and jarring animation for anything that wasn’t a fight scene, this series has grown beautifully, as have how the voice actors in showing their skills and getting into the characters. It’s showing us a wider world, and seeing that worldbuilding is wonderful to me, a writer and worldbuilder.
However, it all hinges on expectations. After Volume 3, we were promised--in less words than actions, perhaps--that the show would get more serious, that it would treat the story with as much realism as it could while abiding by the fantasy. And yet, the writing in the recent Volumes has fallen short numerous times. Too many things happen in ways that don’t feel real, that don’t feel right, and it took me out of the show so much, that I dropped it.
But RWBY’s not the main reason for my frustration--it’s merely the tip of the iceberg. The true frustrations I have are with Disney and Pokemon.
This year saw the end of two incredible franchises under Disney’s wings--with Endgame finishing off the massive three-phase mission for the MCU, and Rise of Skywalker finishing off the new Star Wars trilogy. Now, I had no expectations that Rise of Skywalker would be a good movie. While I don’t hate the Last Jedi, it made it clear to me that the series was held together by pipe-cleaners and Elmers glue.
However, what I was frustrated with was Endgame. I was actually very excited to see this movie--I had loved Infinity War, and still do. It was one of the best movies to come out in 2018, honestly. However, the movie that followed was a poorly written fanfiction disguised as a Marvel movie. The characters were given unfulfilling storylines, treated like cardboard cutouts thrown into situations that didn’t make sense, and given direction that did not give them room to grow.
I mean, we all know about the wedding/funeral situation by now, right?
In spite of that...like with RWBY, I can’t say it was a bad movie. It just failed to be a good one in so many ways. The writing fell flat, the direction was terrible, but the fight scenes? The Avengers Assemble and final battle alone are some of my favorite movie moments of the series, and they just barely manage to save this movie from being a bad movie, to just a mediocre movie.
Along with Endgame, Disney released a few other movies as well--however, both of them were live-action remakes. Now, I will give credit where credit is due, and say that the live-action Aladdin does stand out from the original a bit--it adds to the story and gives it a new flavor that is nice...but it’s not great. It’s a good movie, but not one that I’ve felt inclined to return to--not even for any specific scene, like with Endgame’s Avengers Assemble.
On the other hand, though, we have the live-action Lion King. A movie that is almost frame-for-frame the exact same movie as the original 1994 Lion King movie. There are a few scenes here and there that were added in, but they weren’t necessary, and they didn’t add anything of substance to the story. It was, essentially, just a high-definition version of the Lion King, and with the expressions and actions, not a good one.
It finally sank in, for me, with Pokemon Sword and Shield, and especially with the new DLCs coming out this year. We had revealed to us that a Dex cut was coming and that only some of the old Pokemon would be returning to the new game. And yet, with the new DLCs, almost all of the old Pokemon will become available in the new games--but for an extra thirty dollars.
That was when I realized that the big companies have figured out that they don’t need to try anymore to make money.
Let me take you back in time, if I could, to 2004 and Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. FireRed was my first Pokemon game, and I loved it. I still do, I still play with my old Gameboy from time to time. But, the important thing here is that these games came with a nice little feature that was a series of islands you could explore to, travel to, that were exciting and new. It’s an area that hasn’t shown up in any game since--the Sevii Islands.
The Pokemon SW//SH DLC coming out this year feels like that--it feels like the Sevii Islands from FR//LG, or the Battle Frontier from DPP. Its an area where you can get access to more and new Pokemon, maybe even legendaries, and face new and exciting adventures and challenges. However, the DLC costs extra, and doesn’t come with the base game.
They can call it a DLC all they want, but the truth is obvious--this is the rest of the game, the Battle Frontier, the Sevii Islands, that in previous games would’ve been baked into the game itself, but is now being sold for half of the main game’s total. This is the rest of the game, because they know they can give us something mediocre to keep us satisfied, and milk us for more money to give us the rest of the game.
Disney knows they’ll still make ridiculous money from their movies, so why bother making something original or new? Why give a series a satisfying ending, when you can just slap something quickly together and throw it out, and still make ridiculous money off of it? Why bother putting in the time, effort, and resources to make a full and incredible game, when you can just hold back and suck your players dry for more.
The point I’m trying to make is that the titans of the entertainment business are growing old, Disney especially. They’ve lost focus, and are now focused only on making money, and no longer on making art--or, at the very least, providing a service.
So where does that leave us? Well, the other name I’d give this is the Era of Indie. Small creators, small groups of people, are where I’ve found most of my enjoyment and entertainment for the past two years now. The Adventure Zone is a podcast that has better writing, character growth, and humor than any of the other shows I’ve already listed. Epithet Erased is a webseries that might not have the most eye-catching animation, but its concept, writing, and humor are wonderful and zany. Hollow Knight is a surprisingly dark game that costs a fraction of what SW//SH cost, and yet it is my favorite game on the Switch to date. And once Silksong comes out, I’m going to be going crazy for that, too.
And these are only the ones I, myself love--there are many others out there, too. The big names are letting us down, but that means that the young, the new, and the small can have a chance to grow. And, while I might not know exactly what will happen in the next ten years, I can say this.
I’m excited to see where the Era of Indie truly takes us next.

RWBY V7E12 Thoughts
With friends like these, who needs spoiler alerts? ...Oh right, I do.
...
...
...
As awesome as it was, this episode genuinely hurt to watch.
I’m proud of Team RWBY for being able to take on and best the Ace Ops, but the fact that it came to them fighting in the first place...damn. Not looking forward to seeing them have to put Ironwood through the same wringer.
The fact that Oscar’s still alive after fighting Neo is impressive. I would think she’d be more the type to finish him off after taking the Relic to ensure things like “being called out when disguised as him and losing the Relic she just stole” wouldn’t happen. Looking forward to seeing how ORNJ takes her on next time.
Winter and Penny’s dynamic is a painfully accurate showing of what happens when “what is lawful” and “what is right” don’t coincide; when they do, all is right in the world, but when they don’t...how do you take one side over the other?
I suppose trying to stop Cinder from taking Fria’s Maiden powers is a start. She’d better not leave Penny needing a re-rebuild, though...frankly I’d be perfectly fine with Fria passing naturally mid-fight and Winter suddenly turning it into another Maiden Battle. She’s badass enough with her sword skills and Summons...let’s see what she does with a little add-on to her arsenal, okay RT?
...
Okay, I’ve stepped around the Goliath in the room long enough. The hardest part of this episode to watch was the Tyrion/Qrow/Clover battle royale (pity Robyn was KO’d for it), something I genuinely didn’t see coming.
Qrow....even if it was only temporary, what the fuck were you thinking TEAMING UP WITH TYRION ON THIS AT ALL!?! You should have told Clover to stay back and deal with the survivor, you imbecile! And now...well, guess it’s just your luck that you went and got yourself framed for murder. ...Actually, I don’t know if “framed” is the right word. All things considered, I honestly consider him more of an accomplice at this point. Gonna take a lot to fix a mistake this massive, Qrow.
50 lien says he’s back on the hooch after this. And that he abandons Harbinger...wielding it now would probably just haunt him.
...So yeah. This episode hurt like hell to watch, and yet I would hate to have missed it.
Well played, Rooster Teeth. See you next episode.
...
...
ALRIGHT, SPOILERS ARE CLEAR. CONTINUE.

Tumblr media
Are we ready for a good ol’ fashioned Grimm fight readers? I hope you are! So this is the final chapter to contain footage from the trailer, and all that’s left from that are the outfits and the fights in the mines. So… this should be an interesting one. The past two chapters have been pretty strong, so can this one continue the streak? Well, let’s take a look~!
Overview
Tumblr media
We actually get multiple perspectives in the beginning, so let’s go in chronological order. First is Clover briefing Ruby, Jaune, and Qrow on the upcoming mission, which is to clear the launch site for Amity Colosseum. The plan is to use an abandoned Dust Mine… but it’s Grimm infested, so they gotta get rid of those nasty buggers first. I really like seeing Ruby and Jaune there and being respected as the respective leaders of their teams. They feel like actual Huntsmen now… which if one zooms in on the holo-screen, we see that they’re labeled as active Huntsmen now! Yay~! Anyways, after the briefing, Pietro gives everyone containers containing their upgraded weapons, modified by both requests and based on what he saw in Vytal Festival footage, and new outfits! Everyone preps, including Ruby… but then Oscar approaches her. We’ll go into that one in a bit. For now though, everyone is ready to go, but Oscar remains behind in Atlas. Still, we see everyone use landing strategies, including Jaune. The boy has grown~! Also, new song~! Love it~!!!
So it’s Team RWBY with Marrow and Harriet, JNR with Elm and Vine, and finally Qrow and Clover. We get a cute Bumblebee moment as Ruby feels cold, likely from the very brief amount of Aura she depleted when landing. Which we saw on Blake’s Scroll, which all of those were also updated! But when Blake mentions leaving Oscar behind, Yang stops Ruby to question about her lying to Ironwood. Ruby is clearly uncomfortable with this, but justifies it by bringing up the current state of Atlas and Mantle. Blake and Weiss back her up and agree that for now, they should hold back on revealing everything about Jinn, Oz, and Salem. Ruby even says that she /will/ tell Ironwood eventually… but she goes quiet when Yang asks about how Oscar took it. We flashback to Ruby handing Oscar the Lamp since… well, she’s about to go on a mission and having a Relic/Grimm Magnet out in the open could be a bad thing. But Oscar then asks the million-dollar question; isn’t Ruby doing to Ironwood what Oz did to them? We see Ruby look conflicted… but we don’t see her response.
Tumblr media
For now, the mission is underway with all the groups going through different sections of the Mines. We get a few bits like Clover asking Qrow about being on a team before, but Qrow responding that working alone tends to be easier. Ouch. We have Nora trying to compliment Ren’s new look… but he dodges the topic. Because we haven’t seen that kind of scene in everything in existence ever. Over with RWBY, they run into a cave-in… which causes Blake to recognize the Mine that they are in. One where an explosion happened, and while no one says it, likely killed several Faunus. Hmm… could this be the same accident that killed Ilia’s parents perhaps? Anyways, this makes Weiss feel guilty for her father’s horrible actions as well as how complacent about it she used to be. Marrow, who is also a Faunus, even pipes in about how due to Atlas’ system/society, humans always stand back and allow his kind to be mistreated despite benefiting from them while they have to do nothing. Plus there are those who still willingly abuse them, like the Schnee Dust Company. After all, again it isn’t said, but remember what we found out was under Adam’s mask…
Anyways, they’ve found a way through via a gap and send Blake in since she can fit through/see in the dark. At first, it all looks clear and with no Dust around they can just blast their way through. But things quickly change as Blake encounters the Geist Grimm. As such, Harriet breaks the wall with her weapon, which seems to give her cybernetic armor. Nice! Before they can give chase, however, they are confronted by some kind of... ugh… bug Grimm. Centipedes maybe? Evil caterpillars? IDK, but they’re creepy as Hell and with my fear of bugs, you can only imagine how much of a joy this was for me.
Tumblr media
Cue the action sequence! We get to see some of the upgrades as Yang can now attach miniature bombs to the Grimm that she punches, while Ruby can turn her scythe blade around which increases her trajectory. JNR, Elm, and Vine also get into a fight and we see that the blades on Ren’s guns now have grappling abilities. But we also get to see what the Ace-Ops can do. Marrow has a boomerang/sword/gun hybrid and seems to be able to freeze things… not like with ice, just stop them from moving. Elm can root herself in place while Vine is more or less Mr. Fantastic from Fantastic Four, but it looks like only with his arms. Harriet has a Speed Semblance, something that Ruby excitedly points out since she too has a Speed Semblance. Make a note of that for the end kids!
Back with Qrow and Clover, they’re facing the Geist as Clover tells everyone to head for his location. Unfortunately, it’s able to possess a boulder-sized chunk of ice and begins to have more form the body. Qrow sees that a metal grate is going to collapse due to this and just barely warns Clover, but the Geist is able to go down further into the mines. Qrow reveals his Bad Luck Semblance as to why he was able to warn Clover as well as how he can’t 100% control it. But Clover reveals his own Semblance, which as we all guessed, is Good Fortune. To say that Qrow looks less than happy about it, well… no, that seems pretty accurate. Less than happy.
Tumblr media
Everyone reaches the location, but the Geist has already proceeded to add what I assume is Gravity Dust to its body. So they can’t just smash it the way that RNJR did in V4 since… well… I imagine that exploding Gravity Dust would NOT end well. Before RWBY or JNR can do anything, Ace-Ops is already on the move. It’s a really cool sequence! We get to see how well Ace-Ops works together, seeming to know each others strengths and able to coordinate ad improvise very well off of each other. It’s like with Team RWBY when they coordinate attacks, but there’s this more… professional, higher-skilled atmosphere when watching them in action. They also are able to coordinate knocking off the Dust Crystals and catching them before they hit the ground. It’s an awesome display that clearly has RWBY and JNR awed, and I imagine it’s going to inspire them for later on.
The battle ends with Clover using his fishing line to rip the Grimm straight out of its ice body and Harriet delivering the killing blow. Daaaamn. With the Geist gone though, Dust Crystals start to fall and Ace-Ops starts to round them up. Before Harriet can grab the last one, Ruby beats her to it with the usage of her Petal Burst. But this brings up something… interesting. Harriet helps Ruby up, but she also points out that compared to other Speed Semblances she’s seen, Ruby’s Semblance… doesn’t appear to be Speed Based. Or at least, it’s not the main thing. There may just be something more to it. We don’t get a lot of time to ponder it though as Clover reports the mission as accomplished. But we don’t end on a happy note. We see Forest dropped off back in Mantle… where he runs into Tyrian. Our episode ends with Tyrian striking with his tail, and I think you can figure out Forest’s fate without me needing to say it.
Review
Tumblr media
So far… this is my least favorite chapter. But that’s not saying much when we’re only three chapters in. And even then, I really enjoyed this one!
Let’s go over the outfits and upgrades first. It… was a little underwhelming. I was hoping for some more character stuff like Blake debating on cutting her hair and thinking about where she is now compared to back then. Instead… we just have her looking into a mirror. Jaune we at least saw tracing his fingers over his Pyrrha sash. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the sequences fine and I LOVE the results! Everyone looks so good! Even Jaune, who’s new hair I hated the most looks great! I just wanted… well, a little bit more. Still, very least nothing drags like they’d run the risk of if they did extend it, so it is what it is. The upgrades are all fantastic as well! Not sure if we’ve seen all of them, but Ruby, Yang, Jaune, and Ren’s? Love ‘em~!
I also wish that we had more follow-up after the last episode regarding Ruby. I’m happy that Yang and Oscar did question it and I liked Blake and Weiss voicing their support for Ruby. But we don’t get to hear from Ruby about how she feels about her own choices. We can tell that she isn’t happy, but we don’t get to hear her talk about it. I know, that’s kind of her thing and it’s gonna be a matter of when the floodgates finally break open. Still, I just wish that we could hear her perspective about it, but I guess we have to wait. But I did like it being brought up and Oscar asking about it being like what Oz did to them. Take that people who called it bad writing!
Tumblr media
Those nitpicks aside, this episode was great! We get to truly see the Ace-Ops in action and they are fantastic! Especially at the end! All of them come off as very likable and have this sense of comradery between them. They work together incredibly well, feeling very coordinated and in tandem with each other. Might be because they’re a military unit, but still. My favorite one so far is probably Harriet since imo she has the most personality with her competitiveness, but has this older sister kind of vibe. Marrow is probably a close second though, especially with how he points out how Faunus are put down by Atlas’ system. It might have been his weird way of making Weiss feel better and not put all the blame about her complacency on her since it’s very much a society issue. It was nice to see someone who seems to be on top despite his status recognize the problem is still very much existent.
Speaking of, there’s a lot of good subtle things in this episode regarding the SDC. We see Weiss push snow off a crate, and her face when she sees the company initials just screams guilt. We see her express this regarding how she used to be and how her father treated the Faunus as she recalls his anger when the accident happens. Speaking of, the possibility of it being where Ilia’s parents died? Nice! Blake’s unnerved reaction as she recognizes where they are and how she clearly feels sad about the lives lost shows how dedicated to Faunus Rights she still is and how much better her and Weiss’ relationship is. We’re likely gonna see the true darkness of the SDC this volume especially after seeing Adam’s scar/brand, and it ain’t gonna be pretty for either girl, so it’s good to have that solidarity between them.
Tumblr media
The Mines looked like… well, a mine. So not much to say on the design work, but it was good. The fights were great, especially with Ace-Ops. Music was good, both the score and the new vocal track that played, as brief as it was. I know it's WAAAAY too early, but… SOUNDTRACK NOW PLEASE! The pacing was good. Some nice bits like Bumblebee flirting, Jaune and Nora pouting at Elm’s comment about them not dying, Ruby fangirling over Harriet’s Semblance, Qrow’s still lingering self-loathing about Team STRQ and then meeting a guy who has Good Luck powers. There are just so many good things in this episode. I still have my nitpicks like what I mentioned above, and the ‘Nora compliments Ren and gets mad when he changes the subject’ scene because it’s just so… predictable and not funny, cute, or insightful. I’d have cut it personally. But nothing in this episode was badly done. It was standard RWBY quality, which is great~
Last thing that I can think to note is Ruby’s Semblance. As we learn from Harriet, there’s more to it going on than Ruby may have believed. And… I am all for this! It’s been said multiple times how Semblances constantly grow and evolve over time, and we’ve seen that with people like Weiss. It’s been debated a lot about how it doesn’t seem like Ruby’s Semblance is simple speed with rose petals trailing her since at least Volume 4. What is the true extent of her Semblance? I don’t have an exact idea, but I do believe that the rose petals play a part in it. Especially since my headcanon for a long time is that Summer’s Semblance is being able to turn/scatter into rose petals. Which… has me concerned considering the “Thus Kindly She Scatters” inscription on Summer’s grave. Does Ruby have a similar ability? IDK, but I’m excited to find out~!
Chapter Four Predictions
Tumblr media
So as it turns out, the thumbnail/description for this episode came out the same day as the premiere. So I have a good idea of what’s likely going to happen. Going off the title, ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ I think that this is going to mark the return of Jaques Schnee. I know, I hate it too, but it was gonna happen sooner or later. Makes sense since he’s likely going to launch some kind of campaign in Mantle and stir up trouble there that’s likely gonna effect RWBY’s efforts to help the city. Especially for poor Weiss cause as Chapter 2 demonstrated, Mantle does not have a happy view of the Schnee Family. Not sure if we’ll see Mama Schnee or Whitley, though the latter has a good chance, but yeah, asshole dad may very well be making his return. I hope that Weiss kicks him.
But on the upside, due to that and them being in Mantle, I think that we might have a very good chance of Robyn finally appearing. Chapter 4 feels like a very good place to bring her in and let her counter Jaques efforts, as well as letting us see what she and her allies can really do. She is Robin Hood after all, so she’s probably up for some thievery and mischief! We also might hear about Tyrian’s murder spree cause that’s probably gonna cause some tension between Mantle and Atlas. It’s gonna be Beacon all over again kids!
Episode Stats
Tumblr media
Favorite Character: Harriet Bree and Marrow Armin Favorite Scene: Ace-Ops vs Geist Least Favorite Scene: Nora and Ren scene in the mines Favorite Voice Actor: Anairis Quinones (Harriet Bree) Favorite Animation: Harriet activating her Semblance against the Grimm Bug things Rating: 7.5/10
Final Thoughts
Overall, competent episode. Not my favorite since I felt it was lacking a lot of the tension and drama of Chapter 2 and the draw-in power of Chapter 1. But by no means is it a bad chapter. It accomplishes all that it set out to do and did it well. It fleshed out the Ace-Ops and made them more interesting characters that you want to see more of. It’s a fun episode that may not progress much in the way of plot or drama outside some minor bits, but it was an enjoyable watch. Which at the end of the day, is all that I could ask for~

Annon-Guy: Do you think Ruby's will power and determination is just as strong as Ragna's considering Volume 7's events?
Power: no. RWBY doesn’t have a power system where they increase via emotion. Blake isn’t firing sword beams that rend buildings, Yang isn’t doing Natsu Dragneel levels of damage, Ruby isn’t reaching Flash speeds, and Weiss (despite having one of the most versatile semblances) still has ways to go.
Most anime power comes from emotions making your big flashy final attack. RWBY have won their fights, for the most part, with a strategy, or skill, not overpowering the opponent.
Plus comparing RWBY to someone who has a cosmic artifact of destruction isn’t fair.
Determination: That is a bit difficult.
Ragna’s determination at first is just his own stubbornness b/c he REEEEEALY wanted to punch Terumi in the face. Then the plot and narrative made him cave to Celica and turn him into a generic protagonist.
But come to the later games at least that determination is backing a plan that could actually work.
I have my own issues with this.
RWBy is more difficult due to the split on most reactions to them over the last few volumes.
some people say that RWBY and co.  are awesome for doing what they are doing: fighting Crodo, not trusting ironwood, calling him out on his bullshit, going behind his back and telling Robyn shit, etc. I don’t know if people think that so long as their waifus look cool it doesn’t matter if it makes sense.
Then you have the more critical and skeptical viewers who do NOT accept things at face value, understand WHY Ozpin hid everything, WHY Ironwood is doing this, and that just standing your ground and fighting won’t win b/c blind naive determination and optimism doesn't win wars against the IMMORTAL GRIMM WITCH.
there are so many more people who put these into WAY better words than I can.
determination and stubbornness are not the same.
RWBY are no where near Blazblue levels of power, and their determination is just naive stubbornness.

Dear Littlemisssquiggles, Are you familiar with the JoJo Bizarre Adventure series? If so, then wouldn't it be cool if Oscar could use Ozpin (or Ozma) as an actual spiritual stance in combat?
SupBlack!Aah yes, I have heard of the legendary Jojo and by thatI mean the memes and insides jokes. But while I know about Jojo, I’m afraid I’mnot all that immersed with the series unfortunately. I tried to follow it alonewhile watching the Semblance of Sanity Brothers reactions to the series but Ifell out of touch with it a few episodes in. But while I may not know Jojo, I’mgoing to assume that what you’re describing works the same as Drive Forms from Kingdom Hearts right?
Tumblr media
WhenI hear SpiritualStance it sounds like a signature movewhere Oscar can channel the soul and power of another Wizard that came beforehim; empowering the young boy with their unique skills and abilities. That’swhat you meant, right? Now when I think about it, that also reminds me of Kamen Rider Den-O,Kamen Rider Kiva and maybe even a bit of Kamen Rider Ghost…sort of. Heck iteven sounds like the current Kamen Rider Zi-O. Sorry; not sure if you’re aKamen Rider or tokusatsu fan.
Anyways,I actually would have dug it big time if part of Oscar’s power as a Wizard ofLight was drawing power from the past and channelling the key abilities ofprevious Wizards like some kind of power up. Perhaps…in another series where Oscar was the mainprotagonist, this could be pretty awesome to see.
However,in RWBY, Oscar is technically more of a secondary supporting character and as oneor two RWBY Youtubers have mentioned, RWBY will always revolve mostly aroundour four main RWBY girls.
Oscar is a characterwith enough potential for story and development befitting of a lead characterbut he’s not in a lead role. Who does Oscar and his relationship with Ozpinremind you mostly of? The Doctor from Doctor Who, Avatar Aang from the Last Airbender, Steven Universe from Steven Universe and Yugi Moto from Yugioh.
What do all of these guys have in common? They are all the heroes of their respective stories. Oscar isn’t in the storyhe’s a part of unfortunately.
Tumblr media
I’mnot saying he doesn’t have the potential for agreat arc with solid good growth within the current RWBY-verse. On thecontrary, he does. I certainly see it clear as daylight especially when you considerthe characters Oscar is drawing inspiration from. It’s just a matter of how theCRWBY Writers portray him especially going forward.
Thusfar, the writingfor Oscar Pine---all Iwill say to that is that it could be better. I know there are Pineheads who will arguethat they’re satisfied with how the CRWBY have handled Oscar so far. This squiggle meister is NOT one of those Pineheads. Sorry. I am on the sidethat believes the handling of Oscar and his story could be better. So much better.
Believeit or not, Oscar has a lot of untapped great potentialfor some really compelling subplots in his side of the narrative. However thusfar; the CRWBY Writers haven’t utilized much of it at all.
Forwhat it’s worth, I’m hoping more is done for him in V7. If the Writers don’tdevelop more on Oscar then the least I can look forward to is what they plan ondoing with the RoseGarden relationship. After all, they’ve been nudging thesetwo Rosebuds closer together and drawing focus on their growing closeness toone another for two seasons. I can only hope that the payoff from that would belovely.
Butgoing back to your question Black, as I’ll say again, it would’ve been superdope if each of the Wizards had a power, skill and fighting style unique tothem that Oscar could tap into and utilize. Like for imagine…Oscar needs to fix animportant piece of broken machinery for the team but the only Wizard with mechanicalskills is Henkle. So Oscar channels Henkle and fixes the important machine.
Thereason why this makes me think of Kamen Rider Den-O, is because our mainprotagonist---Ryotarobasically acts as a conduit for each of his four main Imagin partners (Momotaros, Urataros, Kintaros and Ryutaros)to possess and lend him their individual powers and skills to use in battleawaking his Sword, Rod, Ax and Gun forms. And what’s cool is that Ryotaro asksdifferently every time he’s possessed by one of his Imagins. His hair and eyecolour even change to match his respective Imagin personalities.
Somethinglike that could’ve been cool for Oscar. It could’ve been a thing whereall the souls of the past Wizards are harnessed inside of the Oz-cane for Oscarto call upon when needed. While it would mean a Wizard’s soul being condemned tothe cane forever as part of their curse, it would have signified them stayingbehind to help their fellow wizarding brothers that succeed them.
NowI’m picturing Oscar as a sort of great and powerful magical boy and each of theWizards grants him a new power unique to their personality and skill along withindividual costumes to match their different forms that Oscar can tap into an switch out.
Thatcould be dope! Buuuuut…y’know not in the current RWBY. Maybe in an AU though.Hope that answers your question!

After the Fall Tidbits, Chp. 2
And I return! Time for more interesting things from RWBY: After the Fall. Looks like this time around, it's a flashback. While again, I'll avoid major spoilers, if you don't want to read, just block "after the fall liveblog". Here we go!
Like I mentioned, this is a flashback. Beacon Tower is the silhouette this time around. Looks like this is how CFVY got together.
Ozpin didn't change a thing about initiation except what "relics" he used. Goddammit man.
Coco was born and raised in Vale. Figured as much, but good to have the confirmation!
Pharos combat school--Signal's sibling school is my guess. There may be others. That's awesome to know!
There's the line!! "Coco had been popular at their school, breaking performance records--and breaking girls' hearts." (Emphasis mine. See also: "And to top it off, [Glynda] was hot, with impeccable fashion sense.")
Many Mistrali are openly racist apparently. We had hints of that in V5 (the bar's sign of "NO FAUNUS" for instance), but it's better illustrated here. "...and, of course, her tormentors were from Mistral." "...but [Yatsuhashi's] people didn't like Faunus and didn't mind letting them know how they felt."
Poor Velvet has been tormented all her life and doesn't like the Mistrali any more than they liked her. Also, apparently she's never had any close friends until CFVY and "... everyone managed to disappoint her sooner or later." VELVET BABY COME HERE AND LEMME GIVE YOU A HUG.
Yatsuhashi is a gentle giant. Bullied for being so big, he grew up self-conscious about his size and strength. He also doesn't like to leave things to chance, and specifically chose his partner. He also apologized to a tree he split in half. His sword is named Fulcrum.
Fox is an orphan but was raised communally by the Kenyte. Thought Vale would be better, and his life in Vacuo provided the necessary skills to be a huntsman. Also, his semblance is basically Mercedes Lackey-style Mind-Speech in general--aside from telepathy, it also lets him sense people's minds/presences. The closer to someone he is emotionally, the better he can pinpoint their location, but there have been very few with whom he can or could do that. Also, he's such a little pissant and I fucking adore him.
Vacuo is the one place in Remnant where the wildlife is considered more dangerous than the Grimm. Which is surprising, because Menagerie exists, which Blake says is worse than Vacuo... but maybe the desert there is just too dead even for life and only Grimm are found there.
There's a scroll version of Alexa/Siri/Google Assistant. Her name is Ada--the Accessibility Dialog Agent. Fox accesses it from an earbud. Neat!
Coco smells like chocolate and caramel according to Fox, and I like that.
Coco's gun is named Gianduja, and her semblance is Hype. She can amplify the effects of Dust--for instance, in landing in the Emerald Forest, she used Hype on her gravity dust bullets to hover in zero gravity for a moment before floating down.
Character name drop: Iris Marilla, CFVY classmate, with flowers in her hair and an annoyingly high-pitched voice.
"Besides, Coco wasn't looking for a girlfriend, she was looking for someone who wouldn't hold her back or get her killed on the field. Someone who could keep up." SCREEEEEEEEECH. AS IF WE NEEDED ANOTHER HINT.
Another name-drop: Vega Bleu. Fights with a pair of arm-mounted grappling hooks. Former Pharos classmate, gone on to Atlas.
Fox and Coco, and Velvet and Yatsuhashi. Both first meetings were fantastic, but Velv and Yatsu's was so fucking adorable.
"So it's a Death Stalker den. Only an idiot would go in there," Fox said. I make no further comment.
Oz used playing cards for CFVY's initiation year. Rather, tablets carved to look like them. CFVY took the suit of hearts.

DEATH BATTLE Review: Weiss vs. Misturu
Y’know, I had a gag planned when that required Weiss to be introduced after two other RWBY Characters that I don’t think I can do anymore since Weiss got introduced before them. Maybe I can do a deleted scenes thing later…
Two Ice Queens battle for the true reign over the ice castle!
Weiss′s Preview.
The world of Remnant is full of many things that make it famous. From the vicious creatures of Grimm, to the Huntsman and Huntresses that are sworn to fight them, and many many more. But in this world, you’d be hard pressed to find a person who has never heard of the Schnee family.
And like any famous family, these guys are like royalty. And their princess, is Weiss Schnee.
Tumblr media
Like many children born to great families, Weiss’ home life wasn’t that fun. Her father had high expectations for her, and she was set to just run the place… Whenever that happens. But, in defiance to her father’s wishes, she got out and joined Beacon Academy, an illustrious school where everyone can learn how to fight monsters. And once she joined a team, she put the ‘W’ in team RWBY.
Tumblr media
But Weiss can’t just get by with money. So like most Hunters (Which is what I’m going to be calling them so that I can save some space), Weiss got herself a weapon, which Boomstick nicknamed Merc-Nasty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This rapier is nearly three feet in length, and, much like nearly every other weapon in the show, it doubles as a gun (insert “it’s also a gun” joke here)!
Myrtenaster comes equipped with a six-slot Dust chamber. And unlike the dust in our world, the Dust in this world is special. Similar to the materia from Final Fantasy or Crystals from Storm Hawks, these all come with their own stats and effects.
Tumblr media
Weiss is a fan of combining water and wind to create Ice Dust
Tumblr media
But, if you’re going to fight giant shadow monsters, criminals, and godzilla dragons, you’re  going to need way more than just a stick to fight them with.
Tumblr media
Think of Semblances as “X-Men” powers. They’re all unique in their own ways. However, Weiss’ Semblance is a bit different. In the sense that instead of it being unique, it’s actually inherited through her family line. Kinda like the mark of the Joestar (Before you ask, no. No Jojo character is up next. I’m upset about it too).
Weiss’ Semblance lets her do all sorts of crazy stuff. From manipulating gravity, to time dilation, to manipulating dust.
But most impressive of all, is the summons, which lets Weiss act like Yuna from FF X and bring out monsters she’s beaten to fight alongside her.  And the most powerful one of all, would be knight, the Arma Gigas… Which means “Giant Armor” in Latin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah. Weiss’ family is pretty dysfunctional, and kinda abusive at times. Her Colonel Sanders-looking dad up there cut her out of the family line, leaving her piece of shit brother as the sole heir to the company.
But if there are any physical weaknesses Weiss has, it would probably be her durability.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aura is finite, and takes time to recharge. Sure, you’re basically invincible when you do have it, but when it’s out, you’re out.  And compared to Best Girl Yang (Fight me), Weiss’ durability isn’t that great. And since using her Semblance also burns aura, she’s more likely to run out sooner rather than later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Weiss is pretty tough. She once managed to survive a train crash. Judging by the size of the fragmentation, and applying the appropriate mathematics, the amount of force Weiss withstood comes out to be about…
Tumblr media
Not good enough?- Then how about the time she knocked over a giant mech that was designed to fight giant leviathan grimm?
Judging by the size of her partner beside her, Weiss’ output of force should come around to about…
Tumblr media
And it’s unlikely that Weiss is doing this using only dust. So, by using the water,  we can get an estimate as to how much energy is being used for this attack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those of you wondering, this translates to over 230 tons of TNT!
Tumblr media
Forget Dust. Weiss could make a killing on giving people renewable power alone.
Tumblr media
Weiss might not be the strongest of her team, but with her newfound family, she’s certainly proven that she is far more than just a name. And she’s out to prove that this life is hers.
Tumblr media
Misturu′s Preview.
In the early 2000s, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Japan who hasn’t heard of the Kirjio group, a global conglomerate that was involved in nearly every aspect of daily life. .
Tumblr media
And just like any other major company like this, they had a family. And this princess, was known as Mitsuru Kirijo
Tumblr media
One day, Mitsuru’s Grandfather was experimenting with some sort of mental world called “The Mind Place.” Officially known as “The collective unconscious.” Because companies doing shady business deals is apparently something we should expect. When is news going to break out that Disney does have their founder’s head in a jar?
Tumblr media
Anyways, the Mind Place connects every living being’s subconscious mind. Things known as “Shadows” lived there.
Tumblr media
These things are basically demons. But if you want to see an inner demon, you find a person’s “Shadow Self.”
Surprise surprise, Grandpa Kirijo decided to try and get to the shadows for himself. But, as per usual, summoning demons never works out… Unless you play an Archfiend Deck in Yu-Gi-Oh, in which case, go nuts.
So, everything kinda went to shit because of it, and not only were the shadows released into the world to attack an unsuspecting populace, this tower thing here:
Tumblr media
the Tartarus, arose. It’s basically the citadel between worlds. The earth was changed with a new “Dark Hour.” A period of time where everything freezes at Midnight.
Tumblr media
Most people don’t really notice though. Time resumes as normal when it’s over, and almost nobody really notices.
Almost.
Some people can keep moving around in this time. Mitsuru is one of them. since she felt bad about her family’s company screwing everyone over, so she decided to fix it.
And while her rapier skills are certainly good, on account that she’s in the fencing club at her school, a small sword like that isn’t exactly enough to take down a bunch of evil shadows… Wait, hang on. Do both of these franchises have Heartless ripoffs?- Moving on, Mitsuru also has various abilities that she can use.
Tumblr media
And on top of all of it, she even got a Stand Persona, named Penthesilea, which later grew into Artemisia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Artemisia by her side, Mitsuru has a lot of powerful ice spells that she can call upon in battle. So it’s basically a Stand except they don’t have that rule of “Only a Stand can defeat another Stand” thing going for them… Huh, note to self: Have Jotaro and Mitsuru get into an argument about terminology. Also unlike Stands, Personas can be defeated, but they’ll come back after a short time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Similar to Stands, Personas also kinda reflect damage back to the user. But since it’s more linked to the personality rather than the soul or fighting spirit, it’s more mental stress if anything else.
Tumblr media
Artemesia gives Mitsuru all sorts of awesome stuff. Like ice powers that could give Elsa a run for her money. It also grants Mitsuru enhanced strength, speed, and durability. In addition, it also makes her completely immune to the cold and ice-based attacks. I’d ask “Why the fur coat?” But, as we all know, Everyone needs a fur coat (And it’s a pretty nice coat). She can also sense her surroundings via analytical clairvoyance, which makes sneaking up on her pretty hard.
But, like all great heroes, nobody really does it on their own. Mitsuru created the S.E.E.S, or the “Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad.” A group of Persona users that were basically the Teen Titans, if they had Stands instead of superpowers. And, as an added bonus, it’s an after school club, so bonus extra credit!
And you might be thinking “How would one summon a Persona?” Well, since this franchise wasn’t done ripping off Jojo (I looked it up, Stands and the Stand Arrows were introduced about three years prior to Persona 1), they decided to uh… Use the Evoker… Which… Fair warning…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I think I’ll take the Stand Arrow instead).
The idea behind the Evoker is that it evokes a strong traumatic experience to awaken a person’s Persona, similar to how Mitsuru’s first experience in summoning hers was also traumatic.
To add to the unsettling nature of this, you don’t just have it shot at you. You aim it at your face, and pull the trigger. DEFINITELY taking the Stand Arrow over that.
Anyways, with all that power, Mitsuru’s pulled off some ridiculous stuff.
Tumblr media
Here’s an added bonus: One Persona user that could outrun a bullet fired from a Magnum. So it’s reasonable to say that Mitsuru could do this too.
Tumblr media
If that last feat wasn’t impressive enough for you, Personas can move even faster. One of them reacted to and caught an arrow within milliseconds. And since Mitsuru defeated this user and Persona in a fight.
But if you’re looking for a durability feat, then look no further, because Mitsuru once survived an explosion.
Tumblr media
This one to be exact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is easily the longest series of images I’ve had to upload in a row. And isn’t Boomstick a Poultry Scientist?- Why’d he say “I’m a scientist now.”?
Ahem, moving on. Artemisia also once helped out in icing these creepy puppet things:
Tumblr media
Now, using the surrounding air and accounting for Nitrogen (As it makes up a good chunk of the air we breathe), we can get some calculations for this feat.
Tumblr media
The energy output, after the calculations are done, comes to around…
Tumblr media
Okay, forget Weiss supplying people with Power, Mitsuru’s where it’s at. Maybe she could slow down out polar ice caps from melting.
And after ending the Dark Hour and redeeming her family name, Mitsuru continued battling for people everywhere. One shadow at a time.
Not too shabby.
Tumblr media
The Battle Itself.
Torrian and Kristina are here for animation, Weiss will be voiced by Kara Eberle and Mitsuru will be voiced by Corey Pettit, music (Winter Sonata) by Therewolf,  and audio by Chris Kokkinos.
So, we just jump right into the middle of the fight. No explanations, no story build-up, no nothing. It’s just like RWBY Volume 4! Ha ha! … Sorry, I, I just, I had to get that in there… God, that was a garbage volume.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, with swordplay looking to be about even, both sides are basically going to be relying on their other skills for this bout. Y’know, a fencing tournament getting out of hand would have been an interesting story for this fight.
So, a bit of talking later, and the fight just picks up. And it occurs to me that they should have used this as the example fight for why the “FIGHT!” soundbite shouldn’t return. Like, c’mon guys.
Back on the fight, Weiss uses her ice powers to try to give Mitsuru the cold shoulder, but as we’re already aware, that’s not very effective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And out comes Artemisia, which Weiss manages to parry some of the attacks, and opts to get the hell out of dodge after a quick burst of fire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Wasp up there is then sent to fight Mitsuru’s Persona while Weiss opts to fight Mitsuru directly.
Tumblr media
But, let’s face it. The Rapier Wasp is a Bug Flying type. So Artemisia takes it down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And with Weiss distracted, Mitsuru then gives her a kick to the face. That’s the face of someone who was wondering why she was just standing around when there was someone trying to kill you right in front of you.
But Weiss isn’t a fan of being kicked in the face, so she uses her gravity glyphs to make some distance.
Tumblr media
And with that distance comes…
Tumblr media
The Arma Gigas! Let’s be real, we wanted this fight so that we could see this knight fight Artemisia. After a couple of combos where neither side seems to make any headway, Artemisia then fires some frigid projectiles towards Weiss.
Tumblr media
Her Knight, being a gentleman, takes the blow for her.
Tumblr media
Weiss charges (with added assistance from her time dilation glyphs) and manages to actually stab Mitsuru.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately for her, Mitsuru doesn’t go down that easily. And she uses Artemisia to knock them both down.
Tumblr media
Finishing blow in 5…
4…
3…
2…
1…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imperious Queen of Executions indeed.
Verdict + Explanation.
So, to Weiss’ credit, her versatility put up a decent fight. But she was pretty outclassed in other categories aside from speed thanks to time dilation.
Tumblr media
But with Mitsuru’s analytical clairvoyance, that speed gap gets a lot smaller. To the point that Mitsuru’s the one that can outpace Weiss. Not that it matters, Artemisia outpaces Weiss a few times over.

Now sure, the time powers seem like an insta-win, right? Well, maybe that would give Weiss a win in some scenarios, but not all of them.
Since Weiss is extra reliant on Ice Dust, and her other Dusts are fairly lacking, Mitsuru didn’t really have to deal with fire at all. Especially since Weiss doesn’t have the best track record with fire (As we’ve seen from that fire geyser from before).

It also doesn’t help that the explosion from earlier is pretty up there in terms of destructive power. Power that isn’t really that low for anything Weiss had to really beat it out.
Using calculation provided by Boomstick (Yes, you read that right), the calculations can be made through the height of the bridge.

This puts the explosive yield to about.

And this is even accounting for the fact that the person setting it off wasn’t even planning on killing Mitsuru too.

Also, remember those big ice structures that each of them made?- Well, comparing them directly, Weiss’ energy output doesn’t come close. Even if one were to cut Mitsuru’s stat in half, on account that she had help for this feat, Weiss falls short. About a hundred times short to be exact.

At the end of the day, Mitsuru had the power, skill, and durability to take Weiss down. Sure Snow White there had versatility, but at the end of it all,

Overall impression.
I heard from a friend of mine (And I  read  it on the Persona Wiki) that Personas can’t really be seen by non-persona users. Whilst this doesn’t really make much of a difference since it was more exciting to see the Arma Gigas directly fighting Artemisia instead of having it flailing around while the Persona just chipped away at it, it would have been nice to have seen this acknowledged.
Also, I kinda had like… Ten jokes that I could have used for my own end quip, but I’ll just post that to my Deviantart account as a list.
Overall, the results are solid, the animation is good, and it feels well-made. Sure, Weiss’ death could have been a bit more brutal (I would have liked to have seen her shattering with the ice), but as far as underwhelming deaths go, this one wasn’t that bad.
6.9/10. It would have been higher, but we didn’t get a “Bites the Dust” reference for Boomstick’s end joke (The song, not the Stand).

RWBY Character Analysis Part 2: Weiss Schnee
So in the first part of this series of analyses I talked about Ruby and her arc. This time I’m going to tackle Weiss “Protect Her!” Schnee. Spoilers below the cut obs.
Weiss’ arc this volume is all about her escape from her abusive and/or neglectful family, and how that abuse and neglect has shaped her view not only of herself but the world around her. Let me be clear, it’s about her escape from the conditioning of her family, not, as many in the FNDM wanted, about her using her fighting skills in a daring escape to free herself from the prison her home has become/has always been.
Don’t get me wrong, a world in which that’s the story that happened I would be fine with. But this is a series about what actually happened in the canon, not what could have been (though I may break this a bit when we get to Yang). With this in mind let’s go through where Weiss was at the start of the volume and carry it through to the end of the volume.
We see Weiss in her first appearances this volume be quiet and dare I say it, meek. This isn’t the Weiss from volume one that was haughty and precise, that Weiss projected the illusion of confidence to hide her own insecurities that were placed there by her abusive father. In volumes 2-3 we see Weiss become her own person, and we see she’s not cold at all, that she has deep wells of feeling and can light up a room with her joy. So to see her at the start of volume 4 with her head downcast, doing as she’s told, and be so passive in her own life and choices… It’s jarring. And that’s on purpose.
Remember this is animation, every move is deliberate, every gesture is crafted by hand to be that way. Jacques (Weiss’ father) asks Weiss to sing at a charity concert for the victims of the attack on Vale. Weiss is surprised to hear her father want to do that, until he reveals that it’s motivated not by empathy, but rather that he wants to use it to further his own goals. But she doesn’t feel safe/comfortable voicing her own views so agrees to sing at the concert, it’s clear she’s doing it because she cares about the people of Vale, whom she had grown close to during her time at Beacon.
We see her true feelings at the after party, where Jacques attempts to keep her close and even initially physically restrains her from leaving his side. After Weiss tells Henry (aka shitty Neptune) to leave because he doesn’t give a damn about the tragedy in Vale, we hear one of the other guests be even worse. Blaming Vale’s small military for it’s failure to defend itself (never mind that Ironwood had brought a large part of the Atlas military with him and it did more harm than good).
This leads to Jacques trying to reign her in, only to make her more upset (she’s way past being infantilized) and summon a Boarbatusk. Unfortunately Weiss summoned it in a fit of anger and has no control over it, thankfully Ironwood is there to destroy it before it harms anyone.
Okay, there’s a lot going on here. Last volume we saw that summoning is to Weiss a sort of ultimate challenge for her, a last step she needs to take before becoming a full Schnee (note that Jacques married into the name). It wasn’t until the end of last volume that she even summoned an arm and sword, let alone a full corporeal ally like the Boarbatusk. So clearly she’s not simply been sitting idle in her room, she’s been practicing, enough to be able to summon, even if it wasn’t intentional.
Also this is Weiss’ tipping point, the part of her arc where she won’t stand for her father’s bullshit anymore. We see this continue into her next scenes as Jacques continues to try and control her, and failing that, remove what he believes is her power, money, by way of disinheriting her of the Schnee Dust Company (and giving it to Whitley). He’s very, very, wrong about what her power is. Her real power isn’t even her fighting ability, it’s her inner strength. The strength to keep talking back to her abusive father even after being hit by him in the face.
Back to summoning, we see Weiss working on summoning the full knight from the white trailer. And when she does, it’s not in anger like she tried to do in volume 3, she has a look of complete peace. She’s calm and in control, she’s fueled by her emotions yes, but they aren’t controlling her, she’s controlling them.
Before I move on I want to shout out to Klein for being a awesome dad this volume, he might not be her father, but he’s her dad for sure. (Yes I took that from Guardians of the Galaxy 2, fight me)
What I find interesting about Weiss’ escape is that it’s done without violence. This could have easily turned into a story where Weiss used her summoning to fight her way out, smashing stuff and possibly even her own father In the mayhem. But instead we get a story about a young woman just getting the fuck out of a toxic situation. She doesn’t plot revenge, or even have a plan to take being the heir to the Schnee Dust Company back from Whitley. She just leaves.
That might not seem “powerful” to some people, but I’ve read enough about abuse victims to know that this is a difficult thing to do. To be angry, to not forgive, but nevertheless move on? That takes incredible courage and strength. Weiss Schnee’s story this volume is important, and I, personally am glad that it’s not just another story where an abused woman uses violence to get revenge/justice on her abuser(s). While that has merit and can be quite inspiring to some, this story is also important and should be told.
Up next it’s Blake and her arc!
