The bay has always been home for Yang, and her devotion shapes her world around it.

When Blake surfaces into her life, what was routine becomes unexpected, and what was ordinary becomes extraordinary.

For Blake, home isn't so easy, and when treating your life like a closely guarded secret is what comes naturally, the unexpected is sometimes exactly what you need to hold on to.

These were little changes, for the most part; Yang’s usual laughter was more muted than it generally was, peals and chimes petering out too quickly. She had taken up so much comforting space in the house, the smell of her cooking wafting upstairs almost every night, and the sudden absence of it felt as cold as the burners. She still smiled at them, and went about her day with all the friendliness Blake had grown accustomed to - but there were cracks through her smile and her footsteps through the house, things that years ago would have meant danger. So they noticed, whether they wanted to or not, however achingly complicated it felt for a sense honed to keep themselves safe to lend itself to worry for someone else.

RWBY - Love And Balance

All of Team RWBY went into the Ever After out of balance.

Ruby was the most obvious one, she’d been putting everyone’s needs above her own for as long as we’ve been following her. And to be fair, the rest of her team kinda let her do it (no slight to them, they’ve had their own imbalances to work out - I’ll get to them)

There’s only so long you can neglect your own needs before it burns you out and that’s were Ruby was. It was almost a relief to see her lash out in Chapter 7 because it was really the first time we’ve ever seen her act selfishly.

And her big lesson was to learn how to love herself because if you can’t do that, you will most certainly never have the strength to love others. Ruby choosing herself wasn’t just her saying she was enough to carry the burden of leadership, it was her confessing that she loves who she is, flaws and all.

Now on to Blake and Yang- they were out of balance because of their unconfessed feelings for each other. They were two halves of a whole. Blake needed to know that Yang would reach for her and Yang needed to find the courage to reach out for Blake.

Little wonder that after they admitted their feelings that their already incredible synchronicity while fighting became astonishing. They radiated joy even when hip-deep in Jabberwalkers.

Now Weiss is a little trickier but I think I understand her imbalance. For so long she’s been defined by her family name, by where she was from, her wealth. Who was she without all of that?

She answered that for us. She’s Weiss Schnee.

And what she brings to the table is her love for her friends/found family. Little wonder that the most amazing moves during the various V9 fights were due to her semblance supporting the others.

Love restored their balance and will restore the balance now that they’re back on Remnant.

Love of self, romantic love, love of friends and family.

“Balance is an ecosystem, an organism, a living, breathing thing. But balance cannot be restored with force or calculations. True balance finds it’s own equilibrium. It only requires love and the patience to see things through to the end.”

I don’t think it was an accident that RWBY wound up in the Ever After. I don’t believe it was destiny (it would be a grave mistake to think so) but an opportunity given to them by a gentle deity to make their own choices for themselves and for the fate of their world.

i don’t think a lot of people realise that team RWBY weren’t even at Beacon for a full year

“with more exchange students arriving and the tournament at the end of the year - our second semester is going to be great!” - the second and third volumes both take place in the second semester, which we know ends in Fall (and if we compare how Patch looks in the volume 5 stinger, which is on the last full moon before the Fall semester starts, it’s still clearly summer weather, which tracks with RWBY’s second semester covering the transition to autumn across vols 2-3)

in a chapter focused on Fox in After the Fall, it’s mentioned that team CFVY (who were second years in vols 1-3) were only at Beacon for about a year and a half

it’s just wild to me, because RWBY have still, i think, spent less time together as a team than they did apart, breaking up at the Fall of Beacon and only coming back together roughly a year after the Best Day Ever that started volume 2. volume 6 is only 2 weeks after their reunion and only spans maybe a week. volume 7 starts immediately after that and then has a montage that covers a couple months at most (both CFVY novels take place during this time, the second beginning a month after the first), and then everything from Jacques’ party through to the end of volume 9 has spanned about 4-5 days

additional point on that:

with the comment from After the Fall about the Fall of Beacon taking place close to the middle of the school year, it’s pretty clear to me that there’s a third semester that would’ve been after a winter break for new years’, and so following that; Blake’s the youngest member of the team after Ruby, because her birthday would have fallen in that third semester, as for her to have been 17 at the start of the school year alongside Weiss and Yang (which we know they were), her birthday would’ve had to have been the January before the first semester started

10. Jaune Arc has his eye ripped out and eaten by Salem. 9. Jessica Cruz comes back only to be revealed to be clone created by Neopolitan, leading to Jaune revealing his secret identity as The Huntsman to his sister Saphron. 8. Jaune learns that Weiss Schnee was impregnated by Cardin Winchester, but when she refused to use her children to kill Jaune, Cardin arranged for her death and raised the children on his own, believing they were abandoned by their father Jaune, who murdered their mother. Ruby Rose knew of the affair, but kept it hidden as a promise to Weiss. 7. Jaune Arc swaps minds and bodies with Arthur Watts, who was dying in a comatose state of Dust-Lung. Arthur's body dies, leaving Jaune's body in the control of Dr. Watts. In that time, Jaune then broke up with Jessica, disbanded Team JNPR, and was brutally violent. 6. Jaune Arc was buried alive by Hazel Rainart, who believed he had killed the young huntsman. He then went on to wear the similar armor to Jaune while Jaune was left paralyzed and in the dirt. Jaune and Ruby's darkest moment must have been when she had a miscarriage due to complications when she went into labor. However, this turned out to be a ruse by, surprise, surprise, Dr. Merlot, after Ruby was poisoned and led to believe her child died. This, of course, led to another rocky chapter in the marriage of Jaune and Ruby. 2. We come now to the tragedy that started it all. The origin of Jaune Arc's heroic pursuit, time and time again, the death of Terra Cotta Arc at the hands of a thief he hadn't bothered to stop mere days before. Terra had always been a mother figure in Jaune's life ever since his parents' death. Her mantra of "always go forward," words that stick by Jaune to this day as his own huntsman mantra. 1. Jaune Arc's greatest failure. His girlfriend, Pyrrha Nikos, took his place and was abducted to Beacon Tower by Cinder Fall. Jaune Arc had managed to reach to her but was too late to stop the arrow from piercing her heart. This was only made all the more tragic when their friends Ren and Nora were critically injured by Cinder as well, but not before revealing they knew Jaune was The Huntsman. Pyrrha's death spurred Jaune to chased down Cinder Fall, who died when her own fireball caused her to be crushed by the cavern they battled in. The death of the woman he loved hangs heavy on the heart of our hero, The Huntsman.

Penny Polendina’s theme in V8 and V9 (RWBY)

Heyo !! I wrote this long analysis about Penny on Twitter and thought I could share it here as well o/

So this is a little silly analysis of mine about my feeling about how Penny was depicted in V8 and V9 :]

NOTE : 1) Don't take all of that really seriously, this is simply a "fun" little analysis and my OWN view on the subject. This is just how I feel considering the infos we got on Penny during V9 !

2) This is also probably delusional AND I know it

3) So there's not need to come and tell me "shE Ain'T ComInG bAck >:[[[[[[", we can disagree but please give me your opinion and arguments if you'd like to discuss about it ♥

Anyway, for 2 years after V8 finale I felt probably like most people : "Penny is gone for good, she ain't coming back, this is gonna be a big deal for Ruby in V9 but I guess that's it". I knew that Penny's 2nd death was going to be a big thing for Ruby and I expected it like everyone.

I rewatched Penny's death at the end of V8 and it truly felt like a farewell, a goodbye forever, I mean she got stabby stab from Cinder and chose to ask Jaune to kill her to give the powers to Winter. To me there wasn't any going back after that :[

And even when I'm writing it rn I feel like this thread is probably useless as I can feel how much of a goodbye it felt, and even more with the song "Friend" adding more pain :]] Especially with these lines :

And with Penny's soul linked to the Winter Maiden powers, now linked to Winter's soul, I guess it felt like a point of no return. It *still* feels like it tbh.

But Volume 9 changed my view on all of that and that's not because I'm an Nuts and Dolts shipper aha. I'm truly trying to speak objectively and to take out my ship glasses-

I expected Penny's theme to be huge for Ruby, but I didn't expect it to be THAT huge and present throughout the entiere volume. Almost every chapter we got a reference, an allusion, an element linked to Penny, a vision, and finally an illusion made by Neo.

I'll try to list all of them :

Chapter 1 - It was pretty much expected, but Ruby learned Penny's 2nd death a this moment. The start of her true breakdown I guess-

Chapter 2 - Basically the 1st Nuts and Dolts chapter of this volume lmao One of the main key of this episode was Ruby finding Penny's sword, which added to her pain even if she tried to move on pretty fast after.

Chapter 3 - The guards tell about the swords, the Red Prince ditch the sword and Ruby's not okay with that-

No mention of her during Chapter 4, so Chapter 5 - Ruby finds Penny's sword at the Blacksmith, and there's this weird line and moment I'll talk about later

Chapter 6 - Penny's reflection in the water, related to Jaune's guilt and trauma over her fate

Chapter 7 - Ruby's PTSD striking while the Jabberwalker attacks her, and she sees a vision of Penny hacked at the Schnee manor, right before they helped her and executed their plan for her and Atlas (also, Jaune talked about his feelings about what happened with her)

Chapter 8 - Penny illusion made by Neo, attacking and talking to Ruby And no mention of her in Chapters 9 and 10. So except for Chapters 4, 9 and 10, Penny was mentioned EVERY chapter.

Now I know what some of you might think, this was mostly to set up Ruby's breakdown and make her spiralling because it's such a big deal for her, and you're totally right. Penny was used mostly to accentuate Ruby's pain.

And I know that I said (in another Twitter thread) that I wasn't fully satisfied with the finale because of that theme not being addressed after having her presence throughout the whole volume, I think I needed a reminder about production and budget. I think I'll feel satisfied with V9 finale if Penny's theme have some closure in V10 or V11 with Ruby, Pietro, Jaune and Winter in Vacuo. I imagine that with V9 finale this isn't just “everyone is so happy”, this is just the beginning of healing.

Anyway, if we don't have any closure in the next volumes THEN I'll say that I'm disappointed, but I doubt this wouldn't be addressed at all after such a volume and how much V8 finale was. But yeah, V9 finale had to focus on Ruby.

So, even if Penny's presence throughout V9 is mostly to add some layers on Ruby and Jaune's pain and trauma/breakown, I truly feel like the message from this volume is still in complete opposition with stuff we knew so far.

Tbh until V9 I really thought one of the main message of RWBY was that life AND death were important, and that death was inevitable and couldn't be avoided, like in our world. That death can be cruel and happen anytime to even the most precious souls. And it is in fact, keep moving forward aren't just some cute words, it's a true motto of the show. But the thing is that for Pyrrha, I never felt we had any hope or confirmation that she could come back, and we had a closure for her in Volume 6 with the scene at the statue. And by learning about the Gods in V6 as well, I thought that no one in this show was probably going to be back (except fo Ozma who reincarnates).

The thing with V9 is that we discover that the “Gods”, who set up their rules of life and death without any reincarnation and no dead can come back, aren't actually Gods but made by the REAL RWBY God, in a world where reincarnation is THE thing. 🫠

And again, I know that the theme of rebirth was focused on Ruby this volume, that she had to go through that journey to understand that she's human, she's not perfect, she's enough just as she is and can do her best.

But Penny's theme this volume still kinda unsettled me as I didn't expect it to be so present. Truly when you rewatch the Volume idk if it's because I'm biased or something but I see it everywhere. The thing again is that we didn't get any closure for her. We got so much references and scenes for her, and no closure (idk if it's because of budget or intentional tho).

There are a few moments that also seem pretty weird/confusing to me :

1) It was confirmed by the script that when Ruby wakes up on the Ever After, it was Penny's voices calling her 3 times. But those screams are different from the one when Penny and Blake see Ruby falling in V8 finale. I listened again and while one of them seems similar, the others are different. So are those screams we didn't hear as a viewer ? But it still feels weird to add them as if she remembered them when we never heard them. Maybe those screams were just Ruby waking up and her mind mixing everything, but it's still kinda odd to me.

2) Another weird scene and probably the one that interests me the most, is when Ruby meets the Blacksmith in Chapter 5. I still don't really know how to fully analyse or understand this scene tbh-

We know the Blacksmith is a "representation of the Tree", so why does she have Penny's sword ? How does she even have Summer's weapon ? Why does Penny's blade turn into Alyx' dagger ? Why does Penny's reflection seem real and Ruby actually sees it, meaning it's not just an effect to tell us that this sword reminds Ruby or her ? And most importantly, when Ruby asks her how she got Penny's blade, the Blacksmith answers :

Truly as a viewer and even when trying not to be a Penny or NND stan, I can't help but think that this opens a lot of doors for interpretation. What does that mean exactly ?

Knowing the nature of the Ever After, does she mean that literally ? That Penny's not lost as we all thought in V8 finale ? Or is that metaphorical ? She then says "And you, are you lost ?" so it feels like the first answer wasn't supposed to be about Ruby but about Penny's sword. Before the Blacksmith asks Ruby if she's lost, Ruby looks at the sword in a pensive expression and she sees Penny's reflection. Almost as if she was thinking about what the Blacksmith just said.

But what is the use of these reflections ? If it's not just an effect for the viewer but also something Ruby can see, what does that mean ? There is obviously a link between weapons and identity/characters here

Another thing that confuses me too is the fact that Penny's sword is changed into Alyx' dagger. So were these weapons only illusions ? Does the Blacksmith really have Penny's sword, of even Summer's axe ?

3) Another thing more subtle that apparently not everyone catched, is the leitmotiv from Ruby's talk about Penny in Chapter 2 that comes back during the finale when Ruby choses herself. I edited the 2 scenes so people can hear it and compare, here’s the link to the video on Twitter :

Why this OST in particular ? We know that Penny is linked to the themes of hope but also choice/freedom. Maybe this is how it is supposed to be a parallel for Ruby choosing to keep her hope and to do her best. But I can't help but think that it is still a bit sus to hear this leitmotiv again in such a big moment during the finale. Especially when we got no mention or vision of her for the last two chapters.

We also had themes that are related to her a lot such a friendship and kindness with Little, souls moving on to their next life (Penny has a soul, "her soul is who she is").

I just have this feeling that so much is related to Penny this volume, it feels like it's on purpose so the viewer is grieving her as much as Ruby does :')) But nothing really felt "conclusive" in the end. Again maybe this conclusion will be for later, once Ruby is able to talk with Pietro, since we know he most likely got to Vacuo with Maria as Amity appeared to be fixed and floating in the sky at the end of V9.

But again it links with other thread I've done about Pietro (I’ll probably post it here too on Tumblr) : what about him ? Would he be able to grieve Penny a second time ? How would he handle the 2nd time losing Penny ?

I'm not necessarily saying that Penny will come back blablabla ‘(still praying and high on hope and copium tho), but it's STILL a feeling and I hope that I get after watching Volume 9 when I basically accepted the fact that she was dead in V8 :'))

After V8 I was (and I'm still in someway) part of those who thought that she shouldn't come back a 3rd time, her arc was completed, her death made sense, she made a choice. Truly I couldn't see how her being back would be a good thing. Most importantly, I was scared that her being back again would invalidate everything that happened during V8 and the fact that she chose for herself. It's still one of the reasons for why I'm conflicted about this whole thing :'))

Depending on how it's done with the writing, NOW that we know what we know about the RWBY lore, the origins, the Tree, the Ever After, the Blacksmith, Ascension, I *could* see it happen. Of course my fan side is like omg yes I'd like her back please please. My writer side before V9 was like "no I love her but it's a bad move". Now I'm more like depending on how it's executed, I might accept it.

I mean, her being back in V7 didn't erase all the pain, suffering and mourning we (as viewers) had to go through with Ruby and other characters. It worked and kept intact all the time we spent asking if she was going to be back or not.

Knowing how much the theme or reincarnation/rebirth is everywhere in the Ever After, it changes my view on the RWBY universe because life and death aren't just the only options there. There are different rules

She might come back, she might not come back, I just wanted to express how this volume made me feel about this specific theme. It gives us such a different message compared to Penny's death in V8 :']]

I mean of course this volume is brighter than V8 but after a volume where a character just can't escape death even after fighting for SO LONG, we finally have some light and hope about a possibility of MAYBE her being alive could happen.

(Just my own feelings again) From the start during her Atlas arc, Penny :

- got framed

- was forced to take the Winter Maiden powers she didn't want

- was attacked by Cinder

- was forced to leave her friends to do things she didn't want to

- was hacked by Watts

- was killed again

Her ENTIERE ARC was tragic and even if Penny's character is optimistic, joyful, friendly, she's a fighter and she has hope, she sees beauty in a lot of things, she *still* never got the chance to truly live the life she wanted to live. So with what we got from V9, I see only two options :

- she's revived SOMEHOW and finally get the chance to live as it was kinda implied in V9

- she stays dead and her character stays so tragic and painful aaaah-

As for *how* she could come back at some point, I have my few ideas but I don't really want to get into that rn, it was mostly about how everything about her felt odd in V9 compared to V8 truly.

To finish on a hopeful and delusional word : "things always come in threes" :p

Jaune had to check to make sure team rwby was real. So he is hallucinating. So that mean he has gone mad from loneliness

The first time it happens is just after the one month mark.

Jaune has set up a temporary camp on the shore of the golden ocean. Temporary because he won’t be staying long, his friends will land on the too-gold sands any day now and then they’ll all get out of here.

His stupidity can’t have flung him that far back in time. Surely gods don’t hate him that much.

He’s taken to patrolling the shore searching for Crescent Rose whenever he can’t sleep.

Which is often.

The weapon fell along side him, after all, and he knows that Ruby will want her scythe back. He has to fight down the sly little voice in the back of his mind that hisses that he’s just trying to buy her forgiveness. It’s quite literally the least he can do in repentance for murdering her…

Friend? Girlfriend? Jaune’s never been the best at figuring out romantic relationships.

As far as Jaune has seen, he’s the only human sort of person living here. There’s dozens of mice, and he’s long grown used to the fact that they can talk. If there’s people living further inland, Jaune doesn’t know. The jungle spits him back out on the beach whenever he ventures more than twenty feet inside.

Stupid jungle.

So it takes him aback when he spots what is undoubtedly a person peeking at him from behind a palm tree.

Twin silver eyes gaze out of the shadows, a red cape dappled with the shadows of leaves.

“Ruby…?” Her name drops from Jaune’s lips in barely more than a whisper. She smiles, turns, walks back into the jungle.

It takes him a second to remember to breath, because holy shit! She’s here! He’s not alone anymore!

“Ruby! Ruby wait-” Jaune calls, jerking into motion and kicking up sand in his haste. “Ruby thank the gods I-” He chokes out a sob, smiling through tears and pushing leaves out of the way. “I thought I’d never see any of you again”

He steps into a clearing. But nobody is there.

Jaune stops short.

But Ruby was… she was right in front of him he saw her. He saw her! Jaune whirls around, sure he’s about to find his best friend hiding ready to startle him. Because why else would she be missing? Where is she?!

The bright colored pelican bird (Dodo, he’s taken to calling it) squawks, startling Jaune out of his thoughts.

He jumps a foot in the air, and tragically there’s no one around to hear the very undignified shriek he lets out. “Dodo, don’t do that to me!” Jaune reprimands, a hand on his chest.

He’d give more than anything to hear his friends laughing at him good-naturedly. Or heck, even cruelly. What he wouldn’t give to hear another person right now.

A yawn creeps up on him, and he slumps. Guess he imagined the whole thing. The flawless moon hangs above him in the sky, mocking him in its perfection because it’s not right.

He really hasn’t been sleeping well…

Months turn to seasons, and seasons turn to years. Other than the shift of the suns and the perfect moon, it’s hard to tell if time is passing. Jaune tries to keep a tally with a rock, but the waves wash away his effort.

Ruby won’t leave him alone, and as the months pass neither do her teammates. He never saw any of them land, but here they are regardless of all logic.

Not that this place seems to put that much stock in logic.

They never say anything. Just smile and watch him from the tree line. Or the doorway of his hut. Or where the waves crash on the sand.

There’s nothing real about their smiles.

Blake’s cheeks don’t dimple the same way, there’s no warmth in Yang’s eyes. Weiss’s smile is as unfeeling as the day they met, and Ruby’s grin isn’t the crooked one his friend always wears.

And no matter how Jaune tries, he can’t follow them far into the shade of the trees. Dodo squawks chidingly at him whenever he ventures into the jungle and it spits him back out onto the beach.

Part of him wonders if this is his penance, if he’s actually dead. Cursed to remain forever on this beach haunted by the specters of those he’s killed. But that can’t be right, because then where is Penny?

Where is Pyrrha?

The only way he can really tell that the years are moving on without him is the rust that gathers on his armor. It takes him a year before he realizes his hair is at his shoulders again. It’s like nothing has changed since Beacon.

He laughs until he cries.

Pyrrha’s sash frays from constant washing in golden saltwater until he has to untie it from his waist. “I don’t want to get rid of it.” Jaune finds himself speaking to the apparitions, even though they’re one hundred percent not real. He must really be going crazy. “What do you think?”

Blake’s dark hair buffets in the wind and she smiles her empty smile.

“You’re right.” Jaune uses the precious scarps to tie back his hair into a short ponytail. “Guess I finally got that warrior’s wolf tail.” His laughter sounds hollow even to his own ears.

Blake walks into the jungle. Jaune can’t follow.

His shield tarnishes, Pyrrha’s metal going from gold, to bronze, to rust. Jaune blinks and days pass. The suns whip across the heavens as he sits in one place.

His hair is past his shoulders. He’s no longer certain that RWBY aren’t real.

It’s midday and Jaune lays sprawled on the beach, one arm over his eyes, blocking the suns. He’s too tired to remove his armor even if the rust let him. What’s the point of moving if nothing ever changes?

“I’m boiling alive out here,” he groans. He feels weak and floaty, his brain not quite tethered to his body. “Did we make it to Vacuo?”

Weiss smiles down at him, flawless and silent as ever. The humidity doesn’t touch her, even as Jaune burns alive.

“Yeah,” he agrees. His head flops onto the sand. “I never thought I’d miss Solitas.”

Weiss walks into the jungle. Jaune can’t follow.

“How do you deal with this?” he whines, voice like a child even as time weathers his features. He’s battling with tangles in his ever lengthening hair, glaring at Yang’s perfectly coiffed curls as he does so.

Yang smiles at him, eyes empty. She reminds him so much of his sisters, in temperament as well as looks.

“Just stand there, sure,” he grumbles, combing his hair out with his fingers. Why won’t she just help him? Why won’t any of them just help him?!

Yang walks into the jungle. Jaune can’t follow.

His muscles are weighed down by new armor and the weight of years. Crescent Rose is found and tucked safely away. And there, as if she felt her weapon’s call, stands Ruby in his doorway.

“I found it,” he says, voice cracking. She smiles at him, her eyes as unfeeling as the metal of their name. “I finally found Crescent Rose!”

His armor is rusted so that he can barely move, Penny’s blood on his sword has damaged the shattered blade beyond all recovery. But Crescent Rose is perfect.

Jaune is broken, rusting, corroding away mind and body and soul. And before him Ruby stands. With that damned smile on her face.

“Can I leave? Please, I found it can I just-” Jaune doesn’t know who he’s talking to anymore. His friends that can walk away while he’s forced to wait behind? That charge forward into a place they know he can’t follow?

Or himself. The idiot coward failure of a hero who can’t seem even die properly.

Ruby smiles at him.

“I know, I know,” Jaune sighs. He turns his gaze back to the ocean. “I can’t follow any of you anyway.” His voice sounds like his father’s, like his grandfather’s. How long has he been on this beach, waiting?

Unable to just move on?

Ruby turns and walks into the jungle. For once, he doesn’t watch her leave.

Because Jaune is watching the sky above him, hand out stretched, to where two meteors of cool blue fire streak across flawless moon.
