Chapter 8: Reality Check

Story Summary: Ozpin works tirelessly in his pursuit: to make Beacon of Hope a safe place for kids to grow up. With a bigger location and more kids to take care of, Ozpin starts to feel the weight of responsibility crushing him, and he plans to carry the whole thing himself.

For Qrow, volunteering for Beacon of Hope had only one purpose: to get Summer off his back for a little while. When he meets the polite, friendly, and handsome man in charge, he wonders if he could actually get something out of this whole ordeal after all.

With Qrow’s support, maybe Oz will be able to reach his goal of turning this house into a home.

Fan art for a RWBY fic I'm quite enjoying called Red Sky at Night in which Penny gets hacked before the events of the series, Winter is working to get her back, and Ruby first encounters Penny at Torchwick's dust robbery and notices that something is wrong.

I spent a day designing the look of Penny based on the description given before I made the main piece, so here's that too!

Blake hadn’t noticed that Ilia had gotten closer until she feels Ilia’s whole body tremble against hers. Ilia’s lips part, a hitch of breath lifts her chest, like diver about to take the plunge. “How what feels, Blake?” she asks, not at all unaware of the direction they were taking.

Blake can see it, that acknowledgement in Ilia’s eyes, that patience. I’ll wait for you if you’re not ready. And Blake’s ready, she knows she is - maybe she’s always been. “How it feels…,” Blake starts, a little unsteady because she’s so used to hiding. “To be touched by someone who actually cares about me.”

Hearing it out loud breaks Ilia’s heart even more than Blake’s expression could ever say. “Are you sure?” she asks again, one more time. Just to be sure. She stills herself, holds, and waits for Blake to come to her.

“Show me,” she begs. “Please.”

Honestly, I'm ok with the idea of Rooster Teeth shutting down. But losing RWBY hurts. I haven't been able to keep up with it, but I was looking forward to knowing how the series ended. Now I guess we'll never know.

Oz held Qrow close and ran his fingers through his partner’s hair. They had both had a long day, but holding Qrow in his arms made everything else just fade away.

Oz smiled into Qrow’s hair. “I know I’ll be alright. Because at the end of every day, for the rest of my life, I’ll always come home to you.”

Qrow shot his head up off Oz’s shoulder and stared at his partner like a deer in headlights. “Is that how long you think we’ll be together?”

The question came out like an accusation. Oz’s heart pounded in his chest. “Y-yes. Don’t you?”

Oz wasn’t ready for the kiss, but he leaned into it, welcomed it. He could taste the answer on Qrow’s lips.

Qrow slowly pulled away and whispered, breathless. “Gods, I hope so.”

She craned her neck to look behind them, wondering if he was simply hiding behind the others, but there was no one she recognized behind them.

“...Where is Oscar?” Penny asked.

Immediately, she realized that was the wrong thing to say.

I read a Hound Ruby fic recently called I can almost hear the Hounds that I really enjoyed and it got me thinking about these two again.

Something that's been on my mind since I last drew them was that I wanted to find ways to distinguish Penny's look more from her usual appearance; she has the red lights and the twisted ahoge and she was scraped up a bit but I wanted to go further.

So I'm leaning more into the cyberpunk nightmare that is Penny's existence. While with Salem she probably looks as I drew her previously but once they leave they lack the resources to keep her in top shape in the absence of Watts' or military funding.

So wear and tear take its toll and they end up needing to use less than optimal parts as replacements; maybe they can scavenge parts from the Atlesian Knights on occasion too. The result is: she ends up looking more obviously mechanical.
