From the bottom of my heart as a former rwby fan I hate that show so much they should have stopped after Monty died back in vol 3 they’re just sucking the soul out of it at this point. All they do is keep adding new characters to the story and they never develop them, and if they can’t figure out how to develop them, they either kill them off or you just never see them again. The only character that had significant development was Weiss. Ruby is stunted as a protagonist and can’t even defend herself without her scythe, Blake and Yang are only relevant because of their trauma bonding which is sick they don’t even deserve to be shipped together. The fans forced it so much that they just went with it AND AFTER 6 FUCKING VOLUMES THEYRE STILL NOT TOGETHER! This show has been out for 10 years and nothing has gone anywhere. I’ve tried to watch the other seasons but I just can’t do it it’s complete garbage.

I like the fan theory that Jaune is more recognizable to the average Atlas/Mantle citizen because he got stuck with missions that involved interaction with people (such as being a crossing guard) instead of secret missions hunting Grimm outside the walls.

I already said this on Twitter, but I'll also say this here, too: people who start watching RWBY need to come with the mindset that it isn't a kids show.

I say this because I'm seeing fans from other cartoons migrating here because of the positives of the show and some similarities between their show and RWBY, and while that is true (RWBY is fun and goofy and colorful and positive), you also have to know, before you start watching, that RWBY also covers some heavy themes.

I know kids shows also handle heavy themes. I watched ATLA and TLOK growing up. I've watched The Owl House. Those three handled some really heavy themes at times, but they were mostly directed to kids. RWBY is a show mainly directed to an older audience, and I can assure you the way they handle the heavy themes is darker than in those previously mentioned shows, specially in the latest volumes, so you gotta come with that mindset. RWBY is not for kids, and definitely do not let little kids watch it.

I say that last thing because I recommended it to one of my friends as she said it looked fun so she'd watch it with her little brothers (they're five years old) and I had to literally tell her “don't you dare let your brothers watch this.”

Tai Yang Xiao Long

is not a shit parent.

A shit parent doesn't love or take care of their kids. A shit parent fobs them off onto someone else. A shit parent runs from their family just as their daughter is born. A shit parent abuses, gaslights, and torments their kid.

Just because Tai isn't the best at helping Yang or Ruby with trauma, which doesn't exactly come in a parenting class or anything, and because of the problems in the past doesn't mean he's not there right now.

And I'm tired of people saying that he's a bad parent, when RWBY has PLENTY of examples of bad parents.

Raven walked out on their family. Marcus Black was practically Cassandra Caining Mercury. Jacques is...Jacques, needs no explanation. Lady Tremaine/Cinder's wicked adoptive mom literally electroshocked Cinder. The Vanille's were, by and large, only interested in Trivia/Neo as more of a status symbol then a kid IIRC or at least didn't treat her too well either.

Tai and Willow may have the problem of 'neglected their kids in a critical juncture of their lives', but I've seen too much Tai hate to let that go. Nobody appears to be jumping on Willow for getting drunk at every opportunity, nor Qrow's on and off visits or drinking problems likewise despite that coming in bad ways.

Nobody appears to actually think of Raven coming in only when Yang was close to death as a black mark on her record as a parent.

Did Tai screw up when Yang and Ruby were young? Sure. Is he still there and still trying? YES. And I, for one, massively prefer Tai over Raven as far as parenting Yang and Ruby goes. He was a much better parent to Yang then Raven was, and yet some fans treat Raven with kid gloves and reserve the sledgehammer for Tai?!

Okay, maybe I should confess that the reason I feel so strongly about this is that I relate to that. Not the whole 'emotionally distant parent' thing, but the 'raised by a single parent when the other one left' thing. Yes, Tai messed up in the past and that messed up Yang quite a bit. It's not as much as Raven leaving did, but it does deserve criticism. Not an explosion, however, we got that with the Raven confrontation(s) in V5.

Again. I prefer a parent who tries at the very least, and this includes Willow too, to a parent who walks away or actively abuses their kid.

For Grade A parenting (genuine) in RWBY though? The Belladonnas, Pietro, and Ren's folks come to mind. Heck, Saphron and Terra and possibly Jaune's parents too if we ever get to see them?

TL;DR: No, I don't think Tai is a shit father or the "third worst parent" as a mutual described him. There are far worse in RWBY than Tai, and that's the truth. I'm not saying he did nothing wrong ever, I'm saying people are being way too harsh on him.

They met as kids and grew in a very toxic environment, always protecting each other. They trained constantly and had a very abusive "mother figure", again always protecting each other and planning to Rule the Horde together (as the lesbian queens they are). Despite all of that, and probably already having feelings beyond friendship, those feelings were never disclosed. Life and values led them to different paths, the separation was pretty dramatic. Still the friendship was there, only... those ties were slowly stretched thinner as the hurt and feelings of betrayal of that friendship made Catra go deeper in her caothic rout, she was still trying to fulfill their dream. I mean, she just wanted to prove herself that she could do anything without Adora. She was basically the vindictive ex. But in the end the love was stronger. I mean Catra's confession brought Adora BACK TO LIFE. They're SO GAY.

Okay, so I saw this RWBY meme made by a fan and I can't remember it completely but it was about Emerald switching sides. What stood out to me was the language used and how Ruby's group was specifically referred to as "The Good Guys side" and if that doesn't show how broken this show's morality is then I don't know what does. Emerald switched to the side of good, not just Ruby's side. The side that is specifically good because it's Ruby side. You're either with Ruby or against her with no in-between. Compare this to Aang's group in ATLA, affectionately called The Gaang by fans. A term that collectively refers to the group without proclaiming them as THE good guys. We know they're good because their actions show they are good. It isn't just a title grafted on because they're the stars of the show. And while they have an official grouping in the form of Team Avatar. It still isn't used in the same manner as RWBY fans calling all who agree with Ruby "The Good Guys".

You know, RWBY is compared (unfavorably) to Avatar a lot, but this comparison is particularly interesting to me because Avatar is, well... Avatar. That's a title. And it's a title built into the fictional world, one that's so significant it's worthy of being the name of the show. The Avatar is a combined destiny/job description that, in the words of the wiki, is the "human embodiment of light and peace." Obviously free will still comes into play - I'd never ignore the significance behind Aang's personal choice of how to bring balance to the world - but there's an element of fate here, of self-fulfilling prophecy, and fourth wall-breaking knowledge. In-world, benders are (presumably) not chosen if they're unsuited to be this embodiment of peace. Once someone knows they're the avatar, they can more easily find the courage/determination to meet such high standards because this is how it's "supposed" to be (regardless of whether anything cosmic is actually ensuring their success). And the audience knows, by virtue of that title and our opening, how we're meant to view Aang: as the Good Guy of the story. All that already exists outside of the actions he takes within the show, helping to soften anything potentially suspect with a "Well, he's just a kid" or "Well, everyone makes mistakes," or whatever explanation that's technically true in any harrowing story featuring a young protagonist... but continually falls flat with Team RWBY.

Because RWBY didn't do that same work. RWBY doesn't have a handle on its own identity the way Avatar does. It laid some of the groundwork early on but then never capitalized on it, which is why I'm endlessly groaning over the failure of not doing anything with Ruby's status as a SEW/simple soul. Those could have easily been titles the way "Avatar" is a title, something that the people of Ruby's world see as cosmic evidence of her purity and inherent ability to lead them in this war. Instead, it's just a one-off, ambiguous statement and a very badly used skill.

So yeah, Emerald joins The Good Guys, which wouldn't be bad if, as said, the show had shown the group unambiguously being Good people in a war with black and white solutions. Or, if we had some reason to believe that Ruby is The One True Leader, destined/worthy of bearing this burden no matter the number of mistakes she's made. But RWBY even undermines the title aspect by making Ruby herself fairly inconsequential in later volumes. Yeah, the show is also named after this team/our protagonist... and yet that began to feel incidental as the cast grew AND many of the characters brought new - arguably better - perspectives + powers into the fray. Avatar made the simple but VERY important decision to say, "This is the ONLY GUY who can do this job. Sure, he's going to need a lot of help and saving the world is absolutely a team effort, but that team revolves around him because he is, again, the ONE PERSON who can accomplish this." RWBY failed to set that up and (arguably) failed to show the group being The Good Guys, at least to the extent that the whole world would understandably put their faith in a teenager who, frankly, just keeps making things worse. Like, that's a big consideration imo. Ruby's intentions have always been good and most fans are fully on her side regarding justifications for her choices, so in that sense she is absolutely The Good Guy, but beyond that she's just really bad at saving the world. So if she's not somehow ordained to do it and continually shows a severe lack of skill in this regard... why are the characters/the viewer rooting for her again?

A few things I want to mention before I reveal the bracket (and make the post really long because all the matchups will be listed in text):

Seeding of fictional characters in tumblr polls is inherently subjective. I did try to make it so that more popular characters/media would (most likely) face off against each other in later rounds, but I may be overestimating or underestimating the popularity of some characters/media, especially ones I'm not familiar with. There are some round 1 matchups that are probably a closer match but none of them are between the strongest candidates... I think.

The more niche characters will probably get obliterated in the first round as per Squimbus' Law. This is a tumblr poll and I do fully expect more popular characters to sweep, but that doesn't mean you can't encourage your friends to give your niche faves a fighting chance.
