A fic inspired by v9 ep4 but there’s no spoilers! Sort of an introspection about Summer before she left to fight Salem. Main pairing is Summer/Qrow but implied poly STQ in the background (or at least I tried to imply it lol)

Summer stood in the kitchen of their home on Patch, checking and rechecking her supplies. At this point she knew she had everything she was just… waiting. Qrow would be coming home any time, and she wanted to say goodbye to him before she left.

She’d already said her goodbyes to Tai and the girls. She tucked the latter in, promising she’d be back before they knew it. Yang in particular had been anxious, but she’d tried her best to soothe her. Told her to look after her little sister. Tai had been more resigned, and she knew he was tired of her and Qrow constantly coming and going. Hopefully, if she was successful, he wouldn’t have to deal with it anymore.

No one, not even Ozpin knew where she was going. She already knew what they would say. They would try to talk her out of it, tell her she was being insane. And maybe she was, but she had to try. If not her, then who? Her precious girls? She didn’t want this life for them.

She didn’t want this life for anyone.

The front door opened and shut, and a moment later Qrow appeared in the kitchen doorway, looking tired and disheveled. He managed a smile for her, but it turned to a frown when he saw all her supplies.

“You’re leaving.” It wasn’t a question. “I just got back.”

“I know. I was waiting to say goodbye.”

Qrow’s frown deepened. “Can’t you talk to Oz? Just… I don’t know, push it back a few days? I’ll be rested enough to-”

“I can handle this on my own, Qrow.” Summer shook her head at him, although she did it with a smile. “I’m a capable huntress, after all.”

“I know. I just…” he trailed off, looking unsure.

Summer’s face softened, and she closed the gap between them, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. He froze, before returning it just as fiercely. “I know you worry. But this is something I have to do on my own.”

Qrow let his head rest on top of hers, nuzzling her hair. “It’s not just that. I miss you, when I’m gone and when you’re gone.”

“I know.”

They stayed like that longer than either would admit to later. Summer knew very well what she was doing could result in her death, but she had to try. She had to protect her family. She had to protect Remnant.

If not her, then who?

“I need to go,” she finally said, pulling away. “Take care of Tai and the girls while I’m gone, okay?”

“Of course.” 

He was still looking at her with sad, puppy dog eyes, so she reached out, cupping his face in her hands. “I’ll be back before you have time to miss me.”

Qrow chuckled, pressing a kiss to her palm. “Nah, I’ll miss you as soon as you walk out that door.”

“I know.” Summer pulled him in for a soft kiss. “I love you.”

“Love you too, Sum.”

She shouldered her pack, heading out. She turned to look at their house one last time. If she was successful, no one would ever have to worry about grimm again. They could just be a regular, happy family. She held her head high, and started off on her final journey.

v. this blog is heavily headcanon based, given how little we actually know about summer. all of this blog's canon and lore is developed with my friends. eventually, i will write a coherent list of headcanons. in the meantime, if you have questions, please feel free to ask me!

vi. qrow is ruby's father, but i will not accept any assumptions that there as cheating involved where tai / summer / qrow are concerned. in my canon, taiyang and summer were never romantically involved, but did have a close and intimate friendship with summer acting as yang's mother.

To everyone who’s mad, bitter, or just disappointed that I ship Hummingbird and headcanon/theorize that Qrow is Ruby’s Dad...

I will not apologize for liking a ship that, while mostly fanon, has some canon ground to stand on and is in no way inappropriate or harmful. I’m also not planning to apologize for enjoying a theory I think adds a nice element of interpersonal drama while not really hurting anyone.
