Here is the chapter on Ao3, for those who prefer it to FF.net.
Insomnia is a story set in a modern, alternate world where semblances still exist, though only a rare percentage of the population have them. It's primarily a mystery but with minor elements of vigilantism/superheros sprinkled in. I put a lot of focus into developing the characters and their relationships to give the story a more grounded, realistic feel. This is a story about normal people in a modern setting slowly rising up to be able to face the challenges stacked against them.
Whiterose is a slowburning element of the story, but note that it is not the primary focus and does not overpower the rest of the story in any way. If you're not a fan of that ship or just romance in general, you can easily look past it and continue reading for everything else.
Volume 1, Chapter 1 on FF.net.
Volume 1, Chapter 1 on Ao3.

something that is so important to me is that blake is not even a little bit smooth. she's all cheesy smiles and bad dance moves and awkward hand touches. this bitch has gotten by on the fact that people just fall in love with her when they exist in the same space as her for too long. she's literally too pretty to know how to flirt

Let's tally things up, folks!
Ruby's entire depression arc is "resolved" by a one sentence exchange wherein she just... decides she's better now? 'Is this the message?' Ruby asks, on her knees in front of a not at all subtle broken piece of glass. 'That I'm just supposed to give up?' and then literally the next moment she sees Crescent Rose, the weapon she's been flinching from because it represents all the failures she hasn't actually grappled with this season, and decides that depression and suicidal ideation are for losers. Let's go fight a randomly evolved cat!
The group still doesn't care about Ruby's Volume-long struggle. What are you talking about, evil kitty? Ruby's never been confused, or weak, or feeling like she's broken. We're oblivious to all that. That's why we follow her, because we can easily ignore everything that's going on in her life and instead just focus on ourselves. Didn't she have a breakdown a couple of hours ago about having to lead all the time? Should we really be announcing the moment she steps out of the tree that we expect her to be in charge again? ... nah, it's fine!
I guess the overall message is that any and every horrific act is excusable because you're just being yourself? Sorry we doomed a Kingdom and have actively helped Salem in trying to take over the world. The horrors we've enacted are good things though because it means we're being ourselves.
Ruby is conveniently the only Ascended who retains all her memories. Can't have the protagonist undergoing any kind of actual change, after all.
Neo throws herself into the tree despite that going against every iota of her characterization. Will we ever see her again? Who knows.
Is the blacksmith lady Alyx? I still have no idea.
Jaune is made young again, because of course he is. Love that they act like this is some curse he's suffered from - "It's been so long..." - and not an actual life lived across several decades. If I got stuck somewhere for twenty-ish years and then someone tried to magic me back to my 18 year old self I'd be like wtf? No? I'm not a teenager??? Will the show ever acknowledge that Jaune is actually an old man in a de-aged body now? I doubt it, considering this plot-line had no impact on his personality, skill, or outlook.
Also love that the brothers' story is treated like this wonderful tale of growth and exploration. The blacksmith is going on about how amazing it is that you don't know what you'll get when you create something, tone all fond for the demi-gods that have left her world to toy with new ones, and I just wanted one of the characters to start screaming about all the horrors they've caused. They killed an entire population in one fell swoop and have cursed two individuals for funsies, with the entirety of Remanent permanently under threat of annihilation if they don't meet the Gods' ambiguous standards of unity. Oscar didn't fall into the void because if Ozpin had been there he would have gone feral and attacked the blacksmith with his bare hands.
We're heading back to Remnant and Ruby still doesn't know that Jaune killed Penny! Ruby didn't even get her sword back. Or consider her in the tree therapy session. Why was killing her off necessary again? Oh yeah, Jaune angst🙃
We got a "when you're needed" from the blacksmith, so expect that time-skip in Volume 10. Can't wait to see how much important stuff the story skips over...
Also, this is so minor in the grand scheme of everything else, but I YELLED when Summer admitted that she'd lied about the mission. For nine Volumes these characters have been dragging Ozpin for every problem under the sun including, in Volume 7, for the mysterious disappearance of Summer, only for it to turn out that she LIED about where she was going and on whose orders, setting him up to take the fall when she doesn't come back. Who's going to have Qrow apologize to Ozpin for blaming him for years? Who's going to have Ruby unpack that her whole family is made up of liars and she was foolish to think that anyone, including Ozpin, could survive this war with a completely clean record? Hell, who's going to have Ruby simply tell anyone - including her sister - what she now knows about her mother's death? Not the RT writers, I'd wager.
Especially when they gave us a scene of Summer leaving on what she recognizes may be a suicide mission and leaves a token of affection for one daughter but not the other. Summer is Yang's mom too! Yeeeeeaaah the story is really bad about actually writing that.
Overall this Volume just feels like a colossal waste to me. The story ignored most of what was set up in Volume 8, introduced a world it didn't have time to flesh out, threw in an unnecessarily shocking story line about the hero trying to kill herself, 100% dismissed the ramifications of that, reset everyone so that none of the characters have to actually grow or change, and has now implied that all the plot important stuff - the Atlesians' survival in the desert, trying to ally with Theodore, Salem's next attack on Remnant, the development of most of our B Team, etc. - has occurred off screen.
The only thing this Volume accomplished was getting the bees together, which was something we should have had years ago. That admission hasn't changed their dynamic in any way, or introduced new conflicts (remember, no one cares about Ruby's breakdown, including her correct accusation that Yang has cared more about her girlfriend than her struggling little sister). It's just... there, not queerbaiting anymore, thankfully, but that feels like a very low bar to meet.
2+ months later and all I'm feeling is

Okay so Mysterious Helmet Guy is definitely Jaune, right?
Tumblr media
The armour mostly matches, he’s got a big fockin’ bunny (I swear that man better be called Pumpkin Pete), he was lookin’ super-depressed during the intro scenes where he wasn’t wearing a helmet, and we’ve seen that Jaune’s coping mechanisms aren’t exactly... healthy.
So this is gonna be him going from Paladin to Blackguard for a hot minute, ain’t it. Especially since RWBY don’t know he’s there and thus aren’t going to look for him, and Ren and Nora aren’t there at all. Besides a possible Force Ghost Pyrrha (I can dream damnit) he’s not gonna be okay.
Look at my poor Cringe Fail Son, he’s got depression.

if my incessant ramblings about all things summer haven't given it away yet: i love a good mystery. or like, a mystery in general. i want to be right there with the protagonist trying to figure things out, instead of knowing for certain way before they do.
which is why i wish the early volumes would have leaned more into the mystery angle with the villains instead of revealing them outright. like, stick with torchwick & neo and the white fang as the front, hint at there being someone behind the scenes, but don't give their identity away. have cinder wear a proper disguise that completely hides her identity when she infiltrates the CCT tower, keep emerald's semblance a secret, etc.
let them be just one team from mistral in the sea of many.
there's plenty of students arriving to beacon for the vytal festival; plenty of new faces the audience knows nothing about—and now something afoot. who's the culprit? is it penny, the robot girl with a soul who was seen nearby the CCT tower at one point (was she scoping it out?), who would possibly understand technology enough to know how to make a virus? is it sun, the stowaway who didn't wait for the transport provided by haven, his own school, to arrive in vale, who barely blinks before breaking the law, even if it is in small ways?
the virus is marked with a black queen chess piece; qrow sends a message to ozpin about the queen having pawns. who is this queen? who are the pawns?
during the tournament, strange things are happening, and ruby's right there trying to figure it out... but i think it loses a little bit of the oomph of it when the audience already knows what ruby doesn't.

Something to consider: if Salem's operating out of Beacon, we're probably going to get pay-off for whoever she had sifting through the ruins back in Volume 4 the first time we see Salem's inner circle in Volume 10.
As this character hasn't been MENTIONED in canon since Volume 4, I have a feeling a lot of people are PROBABLY going to get caught off guard by them suddenly showing up again.
So I've seen a fair bit of speculation on the 'mysterious unseen member of Salem's inner circle', and one thing I feel is worth noting is that at this point I don't think we can be sure if there even IS such a character. And rather that Salem was simply talking to the Grimm she has coming through the ruins. Simply because this one brief moment in this ONE scene is the ONLY evidence we have as to this 'character' even existing.
Not to mention that this brief moment already has a purpose in letting the audience know that Salem is looking for something in the ruins of Beacon (which in hindsight is the Vault of the Fall Maiden), and can't seem to find it. Meaning that it would hardly make the scene superfluous if it turned out who/whatever Salem was talking to isn't actually important.
All that all being said, if there IS in fact a 'mysterious unseen member of Salem's inner circle' who's been sifting through the ruins of Beacon for the past six volumes whom nobody has ever seen and will eventually be revealed...
Yeah, it's DEFINITELY Summer.

Nora: Look, Jaune! Adrian and I made a snowman of you!
Jaune: Oh, wow! That's pretty good! Wait, what are you building now?
Nora: A snow bride. Aaaaaand done! Please note that any similarities between her and anyone you know are purely coincidental.
Jaune: (Notes heart indent in chest and snow hammer) Uh-huh...
Adrian: (Still building)
Jaune: And what are you building Adrian?
Adrian: Fum-Fum!
Jaune: A family? Whose family?
Adrian: (Points)
Jaune: Mine? And... (Turns to Nora, Blushes) Um...
Nora: That's a lot of little snowmen. What's he doing with all of them?
Jaune: Uh....
Adrian: (Sneezes)
Jaune: Oh, you're probably cold. C'mon. Let's head inside for some hot chocolate.
Nora: Yeah~! Hot chocolate~! (Skips inside)

Sun Wukong
Tumblr media
Race: Faunus

Weapon: Ruyi Bang & Jingu Bang
Gender: Man
Sexuality: Bisexual
Starting Age: 18
Birthday: Summer 1st
Aura Color: Yellow
Handedness: Ambidexterous
Complexion: Tan
Eye Color: Blue Im so sorry
Faunus Trait: Monkey Tail
Occupation: Haven student, Junior Detective, Boy band lead singer
Previous Occuppation: Thief (wanted for arrest in 5 places)
Long ago in a distant land, there once was a clan of nomads that traveled the desert. On one of their travels, they found a crying rock. Wondering how a simple rock could make such a sound, the strongest of their number took his weapon and struck the rock with all his might! The rock was split in two, and inside was a baby monkey faunus that had been crying all along. Not knowing where the baby had came from, the nomads decided to keep the boy and raise him as one of their own. This is the legend of Sun Wukong.
The boy was the most free spirited and reckless child the nomads had ever raised. While the nomads had taught all of their children that theft was okay as long as it was done out of nessacity, such as stealing food when you are hungry, Sun would steal at every city the nomads visited for the thrill of the heist. Even more infuriating, Sun was never arrested no matter how many times he was chased by authorities, which seemed endless to the nomads.
However, Sun's nature would help the nomads. Whenever they needed food or money, Sun would be the first to provide for them. But in Vacuo, it is every person for themself. That is why, when the nomads are lured into a trap and made to choose between Sun or the whole clan, they make the only choice a Vacun could make in that situation. Sun isn't even angry at them, even if it's not what he would do in that situation. A learning expierence, really.
For three days, Sun rampaged in Vacuo city. He couldn't find a way to escape, so he would make it the problem of everyone person there. It was only when Yù yin, the oldest and most beloved Huntress in Vacuo, appeared was Sun finally stopped. Using her semblance, Yù yin "pacified" Sun, and he allowed himself to be arrested. Using Quake Dust, Yù yin sealed Sun inside a cage made of solid rock, to be cut off from the rest of the world forever... if Starr Sanzang, a member of Sun's clan, hadn't become a guard at the prison he was being kept in. Without telling anyone, even Sun, she made tiny cracks inside his stone jail.
After a year of captivity, Starr smuggled in a Dust necklace and gave it to Sun so he could escape. And he did. Away from jail, away from the clan that gave him up, and away from Vacuo.
At 17, Sun traveled west of Vacuo, past the dark lands, and into Anima. With no one knowing who he is, and owning nothing but the clothes on his back, Sun wondered if he could start over here. He could turn a new leaf, go to school like always wanted to, renounce his wild ways... on his 18th birthday, Sun broke into Vasilias Enterpises and stole the experimental weapon, Ruyi Bang Jingu Bang. Unfortunately, Sun was out of practice and got caught.
When Sun was finally arrested, he was greeted by Leonardo Lionheart. The academy headmaster gave him a choice, face execution, or enroll in Haven Academy as a reform program student. Sun made the only choice he could make in that situation, and he has been happy ever since.

“When she came for me, I killed her over and over again. The longest she was gone was only a few hours, before she put herself back together. When I couldn’t lift my arms anymore, she showed me that, through her, I could have the vengeance I needed.”
+
“Little late to run and hide. You've been on our master's list for some time, so you must understand that we cannot allow you to slip away.”
+
“I don’t understand. Working with bandits? leaving Ruby alive? What’s the point?! We’re strong enough to take what we want by force.”
“Never underestimate the usefulness of others. Take Leonardo; he was one of Ozpin’s most trusted, but now… hm.”
+
“Headmaster Lionheart is loyal to Salem, and now all we need is the key to the vault. You’re not the only one to turn your back against Oz, Raven.”
“I’m not helping Salem. I’m not helping Ozpin! I don’t want a part in any of this!”
+
“You don’t want to do this, Yang.” and “No more Gretchens, boy.” and “I love you just the way you are.” and “Baby, please don’t do what I did.”
hoo boy.
raven and lionheart had that conversation about their betrayals and then we learned about gretchen and then raven told yang it’s not that simple and you don’t know what i’ve been through and please don’t do this to yourself.
“you’re really going to leave them?” “if i do this right, there’s nothing to worry about.”
“you sound just like your mother.”
this whole time. this WHOLE TIME. it’s been for gretchen. summer tried to end it and salem decided enough was enough.

"who was Raven portaling to?"
someone at the Branwen camp
like, she'd obviously have someone there to portal back to, we know that's Vernal up to volume 5, so whoever her lieutenant was at the time
do you think she'd randomly drop in to watch Yang from a distance on a whim and then walk/fly all the way back to Anima? seriously?

the mystery portal is living in my head rent-free.
for years i've been aimlessly speculating about the possibility that raven has a bond to someone unexpected, simply because they established that she has bonds with qrow, tai, and yang, but logically she needs to have one with someone else to leave. and the obvious answer to that is vernal, but 1. they never mention it anywhere, not even as an 'used to have', 2. there's no way to know if vernal was already with the tribe during the flashbacks (she doesn't look to be much older than yang, at most i'd say she's about the same age as cinder), and 3. we don't even know if raven had gone back to the tribe at this point in time.
and it's not like i ever really thought it would actually go anywhere—i was fully prepared to have been overthinking things like usual lol—but to be here now is like... they're feeding into my bad habits... and i don't know what to think ಠ╭╮ಠ
