RWBY SPOILERS

Imagine being made a leader while being 15 at the time and having no experience in the position. You have to be responsible for others, not just your teammates, but for the people who trust you as well. But then you see those people get hurt or killed, and there's nothing you could do about it. But despite that, you continue to fight because if you don't, then who will? But even then, people you care about get hurt.

Then you learn about the ancient evil that wants to destroy everything you know and love and it wants you because you pose an actual threat to it, and you also learn that this evil took your mother from you.

But despite that you try to make the right decisions to save as many people as you can, but you fail anyway, and once again people you care about are getting killed, which hurts even more when this is the second time you lose them.

And then you end up in a place where nothing is like it's seems. You and your friends must fight to get home, but there's really not much you can do because of everything that happened. And the worst part is that you don't know who you are anymore. And then people think you'll give some inspiring speech to make them feel better, but after everything that happened you're done with being the leader and you're tired to be the one who always has to say something to make things better when you're the one who actually needs it.

Ruby has been through a lot, so it's understandable she's done with being a leader since her decision ends up making things worse. She's just a child with the responsibility no one is really ready for, and she can't get others out of the mess they're in because she's in it too.

Out of first three volumes, which one do you reckon is the "weakest"/worst in terms of writing?

Hands down - Volume 1.

And half of the problems come from pacing.

It manages to do a ton of really bad decisions in terms of narrative structure and just overall writing:

Weird Comedy that mostly misses the mark- The show attempts to do "anime style" jokes, but most of those gags barring a few end up feeling extremely out of place (or end up retroactively disgusting and offensive like Mr Sexual Harassment Professor Port.)

The most frantic uneven pacing possible - One moment, characters might, at breakneck pacing, go through tense high-octane situations, and the next? You get the absolute show-stopper awful scenes like Jaune and the Honey. A lot of Jaune's arc in V1 is especially good at wasting time on things that could have taken half as long to do. Honestly? Considering the latter volumes, where they waste time drinking tea or the entire filler dimension volume, this one should have been an omen of things to come.

Narrative misfires - By now, the show is known for those more than for its actual positive aspects of the plot, sure, but this issue began very early on - whether it is the weird moments with no follow-up like Weiss's racism or the disgusting subplot of Jaune being treated as The Good Guy for not understanding that No is a NO - V1 is littered with moments that either completely miss the mark or don't achieve anything at all (or even are retroactively bad like Blake's flashback which by now we know is complete nonsense since she was a literal princess living in a paradise).

Lack of proper set-up - Be it the motivations of the lead characters not given enough time, Ruby's backstory and motivations(and the rest of the cast, really) - the world setting not given enough explanation or coverage. The Volume really needed either longer episodes, more episodes, or just fewer Jaune subplots(as much as I don't REALLY mind them)

There's a good core there and the Volume could be very good with proper pacing and runtime (not to forget that Volume 1 still has the BEST team fight for the lead characters TO THIS DAY and the best use of Ruby's theme song TO THIS DAY and one of the few moments where Ruby feels like she has earned her protagonist status TO THIS DAY), but as it stands it's the most messy out of the early Volumes and the most unfocused one.

A lot of the issues, however, even though they disappear into the background in the next two volumes, rear their ugly heads the moment V4 hit the screens.
