.Rwby Catchup V8e5: The Slogblog Continues.

Ok so we’re just going to use blow up an entire mines worth of naturally grown crysatlised dynamite to get this thing on the air? well thats some fate-franchise type swordthrowing right there. Wait im confused, didnt Emerald join Cinder because Neo refused to disobey Salem’s direct orders (a wise decision on her part)? Why is Neo in the flying machine? Have i told you how bland Cinder is yet? I think i have but even when prompted by penny to please give some motivation she only goes for a generic “I dont listen to anyone” line.  good on penny for seeing past the illusions with Infrared, Emerald has guts to match her bad taste in loveinterests? oh no Mercury implied its a motherhood-figure thing didnt he? its been a while since i saw him.  Pietro cant stand to lose penny again. Good decision by Ruby to save on time by entrusting Goodwitch to elucidate on Ozpins secrets.  And salem gets exactly what she wanted by being introduced on the global stage. Zwei and Dad. But no raven (didnt she leave to Dads place? I thought thats where she teleported to at the end of the Spring Vault Arc?) Its a bit weird that a single chip in her blade is all it takes to reverse her connection. That seems like a critical design flaw James never would have allowed a military project he funded to posess. Imagine granting billions in funds to design a weapon where, a single stray bullet retrieved by the enemy can turn it back on your own army. (i know its dehumanising to talk about penny as a weapon, but in the eyes of a general like James, humans are assets not people). I dont believe Watts would have found such a flaw, because i dont believe James would have allowed penny to be equiped with a weapon that allowed such a flaw to exist in the first place. Watts is back to prison, but now he has a phone. (Which is weird because James no longer has a use for Watts and as such has no reason to keep an Enemy Asset alive.) Oh a grimm river, flowing like water and behaving in a liquid manner headed towards the hole in the ground you evacuated the civilians into. I know im supposed to care about that, but at this point there is just too much happening in the plot for me to have the energy left to care about yet another threat. Like i get it Salem is evil and about to commit yet another crime against the natural order of the universe but i dont have the emotional energy to care about: Oscars torture James Tyranny Watts Scheming Sniffy-Bitey-Dogdemon’s existence and the implications of whomever was mad-scienced into becoming it. Cinders Scheming Neo’s Scheming The “watching the broadcast”-Cameosquads continued existence The implications of Ruby initiation “operation a thousand kuroyuri’s” and giving Salem exactly what she wants in the process The Grimm River The logistics of keepig the refugee camp supplied and guarded against the army of grim The army of grim, The Mantle Powergrid Shutdown Atlas being suspended by Single Point Failure right on top of the refugees Penny’s death-fakeout/mind controll and whatever else it is im forgetting is happening right now. In conclusion: The problem with a show throwing so many punches at once continuously and ceaselessly without an end in sight, is that the punches eventually stop hurting because you end up too numb and bruised to feel them.

ok, in the fight this episode when Maria is piloting the mech, she sees Emerald obviously focusing on something, and Immediately begins looking around and probably adjusting her prosthetic eyes to help her see invisible things.

She has no idea what Emerald’s semblance is. But still processed the whole “the thing i was fighting disappeared, that girl is focusing on something, she must be making it invisible somehow” in a second. That’s not something that can be taught in schools. Maria is a perceptive quick witted badass.

I was thinking of my own Alternate Universe RWBY timeline where Clover lives... 🤔

(Soap Box: I know there are a lot of great fix-it fanworks already, but personally I feel like none of the ones I've seen address the core issue with Clover's character. The reason he died is because he was blindly devoted to a dictator. He doesn't stop to think 'a murderer loose', he just keeps trying to arrest Qrow because it's his 'mission'. All Cops Are Bad, and unfortunately Clover was one of them. The only way I could see him actually being a good pairing for Qrow is (1) if the ENTIRE story is TOTALLY rewritten, or (2) if he has a change of heart and decides to defect from the Ace Ops.)

Here's what I was thinking:

Volume 7 is mostly the same, but the Qrow vs. Clover vs. Tyrian fight goes differently. Clover decides to team up with Qrow to stop Tyrian. He still gets gravely injured in the scuffle, but it's not a mortal injury. He is rescued on time and taken back to Atlas for intensive care.

Clover then spends a majority of Volume 8 recovering in the hospital. (Instead of "You KILLED Clover!" it's "Clover's out of commission because of you!!") He doesn't regain consciousness until V8E5.

As he recovers, Clover is conflicted about his feelings. He encourages the other Ace Ops to follow Ironwood. However bombing Mantle is the last straw, and at that point Clover loses his faith in Ironwood all-together.

When Winter decides to rebel against Ironwood, Clover joins her cause. He's happy to see Qrow again. However, being in no shape to fight, he is delegated to the Portal Rescue party.

His influence does change the story of this volume a little bit, but in the end Atlas still falls.

The last we see of Clover, he's changed into civilian attire and is standing alongside Oscar in the sandstorm of Vacuo.

Favourite thing about them: wait I have to choose just one- uhhhh let me think. Does it count as 'one thing' if I say her entire personality? She's a sweetheart and she cares so much about people but also I love how she doesn't hesitate to stand up for herself. Like, she's kind but she's not a pushover - she gets angry, she gets annoyed (V8E5 is a great example), she's a sweet gentle angel but at the same time if you hurt the people she loves she WILL fight you. The duality of Penny 😌

Also I just always love robot characters

Least favourite thing about them: pLEASE STOP DYING MY HEART CAN'T TAKE THIS orz

Favourite line: "Do hugs always make you feel this warm inside?" is a big one, very emotional, very sweet. But at the same time I also really love "That doesn't bother you?" and "I do not see what is good about any of this" from Volume 7, when she and Winter are on the way to take the Maiden powers from Fria. Also shout out to her "Trust me" to Jaune in the finale being one of the lines I cling to a lot in terms of hope and theorising about her revival.

brOTP: All of Team RWBY. Gimme that 5-person team dynamic please-

I also really adore the concept of Penny being close friends with (either AU or post-redemption) Cinder. I just feel like they have the potential for a really fun and interesting dynamic (also I do have a theory about Penny being involved in Cinder's redemption arc, I've discussed it in servers a couple of times with friends, if enough people are curious I might try to put together a post on here? A lot of it is barely comprehensible rambling but honestly that's how most of my theorising goes)

OTP: Frosen Steel all the way, my favourite ship in the whole show, just *chef's kiss* I love them so so much. Very close second place to Nuts & Dolts and Frostbyte, though that's probably not exactly a surprise

nOTP: Other than the illegal/uncomfortable ones...I'm not super comfortable shipping Penny with Winter due to the fact that I very solidly see them as siblings. Like, objectively there's nothing wrong with the ship but my perception of them as practically sisters makes seeing them in a romantic context kinda weird...

Random headcanon: She calms herself down by stimming with her hands, usually rubbing them together but sometimes running her hands over soft textures (sometimes with gloves off but sometimes keeping them on because otherwise it'd be sensory overload). One of her favourite ways of doing this is by running her hands through Ruby's hair.

Unpopular opinion: Penny is not and never has been human. Just because a creature bleeds red blood does not make it human and I will die on this hill.

Also she's definitely not staying dead, she's gonna come back and I think she's most likely (from a narrative/storytelling perspective) going to tend up being some kind of mix of organic and robotic in her final body. Idk how unpopular this is but I'm including it anyway

Song I associate with them: [looks at the notes I wrote about why I chose certain songs for my RWBY playlist and how 158 of them are ones I connect to Penny] uhhhhh... [looks to the other side to see all the analyses in my head of how at least half of the songs on the RWBY soundtracks can apply to Penny in some capacity] uhhHHHHHHH

RWBY V8E5?

She can still fight! Cool! And god Cinder is just...just so dumb. Damn, lady. 

I guess I’m not clear where the ideological line breaks down now though? I suppose Ironwood didn’t want Amnity launched because saving the world besides his slice of it would be a ‘waste of resources’ in the current crisis that obviously could draw in their enemies, plus he didn’t want the other kingdoms knowing what he did and maybe going against him. But what’s the fight over abandoning Mantle now over? The RWBY/JNR crew know the Atlas military isn’t going to do its job, and help from the rest of the world may now be coming in, why not just let the bourgeoise bail at this point given they’ve declared their uselessness and they can’t stop Ruby and company from doing what needed to be done anymore? Then again leaving Ironwood in charge of a mobile city-fortress with the biggest military in the world is probably still a Very Bad Idea, so fair, and maybe they’re hoping that if they force the issue Atlas will finally give in and do something since they can’t run, plus it’s not like they’d allow Penny her freedom. Anyway, rebelliously smirk at what your old buddies are getting up to all you want Marrow, you still immediately turned around and agreed to help kidnap and brainwash somebody so I’mma need to see a little more mulling over before I buy any possible face turn.

Two going forward thoughts:

1. “Just north of-” Vacuo and that’s how the plot heads there next, right?

2. Was already thinking this, but in the wake of this episode I’d bet solid money we’re going to get Ironwood successfully taking control of Penny, but he won’t be able to get her to open the Winter Vault because there’s an established difference between her programming driving her body and her soul. If it’s near the end of the season that’s a big penultimate reveal, if it’s around the midpoint the next phase becomes Ironwood decides he has to capture Penny’s friends to torture/threaten to kill them until she complies.

RWBY V8E5 thoughts

Aaand the usual.

The opening battle was excellent. It was great to see that Maria can still fight, even giving Neo a run for her money, but the Penny/Cinder battle was very nicely done. Penny’s doing a great job with her Maiden powers, and the fact that Emerald’s Semblance didn’t do jack against her sensors was a very nice touch.

Cinder’s hurting now, but she’s gonna be hurting WORSE when Salem finds her...especially if she hears that bit about “I serve nobody” that Cinder let slip. That could be...costly.

The Amity Tower broadcast was a welcome relief. Now the world has a better idea what’s going on. Maybe some of the other kingdoms will send help...or at least, some of our old friends will. Team SSSN? The (new group replacing the) White Fang? Glynda (good to see her again, BTW)? ...Also, was Salem smiling during that broadcast? Like, not a malicious smile, more of a proud one. Weird.

However this turns out, it could be a step in the right direction...which is good, given how things are making a mad dash in the wrong one.

Whatever Watts did to Penny...I hope she’s okay. Should take more than a fiery re-entry to do our Iron Maiden in like that.

...Aaaaand once again, the episode ends with me respectfully asking WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!?

Hopefully that’s the last dregs of the Pool of Grimm that Salem has been using. Would be nice for her to be out of material to make Grimm from...but that’s hoping beyond hope. XP

Anyway, a solid episode this week. Lots of ups and downs, and no real certainty of where things are going from here...

Guess we’ll see more next week.
