RWBY V9 theory
Given how much Ruby is still repressing her feelings and ignoring her own state in favor of moving forward, I suspect that next episode or episode 3 she will dismiss the search for Crescent Rose under the pretense of "we don't have time, let's go", probably opting to pick up and use whatever weapon she finds, only for it to not "fit" her, and despite the fact that this other weapon does not work for her, Ruby will insist on pushing on
Weapons in RWBY are often crafted by the user, they are representations of the wielder and are effectively a piece of them, a piece of their soul, particularly true for Ruby, she's a weapons geek, Crescent is her baby
So in essence, Ruby would be discarding a part of her soul in the name of victory (which also can seeve as a parallel to Ironwood, the disregard of the self in order to win, ignoring what this does to a person, essentially Ruby is in danger of being on the path Ironwood took)
And I suspect the blacksmith will come into play here somehow, more or less articulating the above to Ruby
Ruby can't just replace/discard/foegwt Crescent, it's a part of her, it is her
Tumblr media
(Couldn't resist)
Ruby will not be able to truly move forward until she reclaims Crescent, aka stops trying to push forward in spite of her issues, only when she takes time to see to her own needs, processes, reclaims Crescent, will she move forward

Things that broke my heart, RWBY V9C5
CRWBY are coming for my heart in Volume 9.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The memory of Penny is following Ruby everywhere, but Ruby is still insistent she can handle her burdens alone. Then after she insists she is okay, we get a flash with Summer.
Tumblr media
Ruby then giving up the broach that carries a mother's promise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weiss having flashbacks to the fall of Atlas. At least her team is there for her this time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jaune named the rabbit "Juniper." Not to mention the obvious that he is a rusted knight and has clearly been in the Ever After for some time.
Tumblr media
And lastly, the team's excitement at meeting the rusted knight disappearing once they realized who it was.

[takes a deep breath] so CRWBY really looked at the bright girl in volume 1 and went like, we're going to traumatize the f*ck out of her so that in a decade or so she completely breaks down after seeing those she cares 'bout die over and over again and just kills herself
And this is going to weigh on the minds of her teammates forever. They're going to look back one day and remember who Ruby used to be, and then they're going to realize what the world made her become. And it will shatter them every time they remember this scene.

In anticipation of volume 9 I did my first full RWBY rewatch in years, and I noticed something that is all the more relevant in the face of Ruby and Jaune both breaking down. At each other. Jaune clearly feels like a failure, he “can’t even protect” the Afterans who saved his life, he “couldn’t even be the make-believe hero”. He couldn’t protect Pyrrha, he was forced into a position where he killed his friend Penny, and then spent several decades by himself, waiting and slowly losing his mind a little bit… But, Ruby, back in v1e12, clearly tells Jaune he can’t be a failure. “Because it’s not just about you anymore! You've got a team now, Jaune. We both do! And if we fail, then we'll just be bringing them down with us. We have to put our teammates first, and ourselves second.”
Which is a very unhealthy way to approach leadership, Ms. Ruby Rose! If you decide being a leader is more important than being a person with feelings, you shove things down, you make yourself the one people can always turn to, you don’t share the burdens of leading, then things will eventually hit a boiling point where that is no longer possible, and your feelings and all those other things you’ve been avoiding will erupt. And they did, in spectacular fashion.
That’s also why I think Ruby’s harshest reactions were towards Blake. Weiss may have triggered her by asking her to chime in at a time where Ruby was clearly struggling with PTSD, and it must be really hard to see Yang be happy when Ruby is so far removed from feeling anything close to happy. But Blake has been taking the lead this volume, clearly feeling more confident being trapped in a fairy tale than the others, trying to keep everyone’s spirits up, reminding them “saving those lives has to count for something”, when everyone else just feels like they’ve failed in their plans for Atlas. And Ruby sees Blake take that role and maybe it reinforces the feeling that Ruby is now lacking in that respect, maybe Blake is the mirror that just makes Ruby think she’s a failure.
And the other thing that both Jaune and Ruby need to confront is grief. That’s why we see Penny as well as Summer Rose pop up in their stories. And do you know who else needs to confront grief? Neo… which is why I’m hoping the Ever After gives them all whatever crazy, wacky opportunity it might be to confront the fact they have lost people and how that changes their purpose…

Just had a thought and had to share. Did Ruby know that was her sister and friends watching her drink the tea? Cause I think an argument could be made that she just thought that they were more Neo clones made to torment her. Which is why she drank it so easily while looking them right in the eyes. She thought she was going to continue to be tormented by copies of her team. She wasn’t looking at them to show them she gave up, she was looking at them so that they would be the last things she saw, even if they were an illusion.

A bumblebreak down:
Yang is going to realize she’s in love with Blake on the island.
This is a focus of the Ever After Island arc as stated by the v9 ch1 synopsis, “[. . .] As they journey to find a way back home, they'll have to overcome some of their toughest challenges yet – the struggle of their own identities, and whether or not they're equipped to stop Salem.
Identity is going to play an enormous role in this storyline. For self serving purposes, let’s look at what this means for Yang.
Yang Xiao Long’s identity, to put it bluntly, is defined by her sister. Secondary even to Raven. Ruby has been the focal point of Yang’s life since Ruby was born. It’s heavily implied that Taiyang was a slight absent/absentminded father, and Yang took it upon herself to expand her role of older sister into full-on caretaker and later in life, guardian.
Yang has historically been Ruby’s guardian in nearly every sense. She has physically protected Ruby at risk of her own safety, but she also guarded Ruby’s emotional and general growth. Yang read to her as children, fostered beliefs in huntresses, helping others, and pursuing passions. Yang’s key source of happiness in the world is directly tied to Ruby’s safety and well-being.
Not only has Yang historically let Ruby define her, Yang is currently defined by Ruby. She trusts Ruby’s instincts and follows her not as a subordinate and a leader, but as a family member whose love overrides their logic. Yang is shown to blindly follow Ruby, without information and without hesitation, something Raven calls Yang out for in v4. Even when presented with the opportunity to live with her mother, have all her life-long questions answered, she rejected Raven’s offer in favor of finding and protecting Ruby. While Yang grew from the experience and started scrutinizing Ozpin, she has never once questioned Ruby’s position as her personal North Star which she’s been charged to protect. This is Yang’s purpose in life.
Back to the Island: if it is the Island’s intention to examine identity, Yang will likely be forced to understand just how much of herself she has created around Ruby’s life, pursuits, consequences, and wants. The inevitable next question is this: What does Yang Xiao Long want?
This would be an incredible story beat for Yang, and a similar question/answer set up was executed masterfully in Shera and the Princesses of Power.
The question being: what are heroes without their causes? What if martyrs were less sacrificial? What selfishness exists in the selfless? What does Yang Xiao Long want?
The answer being:

So obviously we never got an atlas ball episode...
But it's not too late to get an Ever After ball episode
Balls are very frequent occurrences in fairy tales after all, and team RWBY is now in fairy tale land
We could even have a fairy godmother magically create dresses for the girls

ADDENDUM TO MY ‘NEO BECOMES RUBY’S BIG BAD WOLF THEORY
I ain’t throwing in the towel, I will somehow come off with a one right prediction from this volume out of...well, four at this point given my previous post BUT
Imagine if you will Curious Cat in Neo's body and possibly(?) with access to her memories might know about The Hound and while not knowing the full context knows that Ruby's terrified of that thing because fair, it's a shambling abomination even by Grimm standards and uses Neo's semblance to give himself a more bestial body to fight with since it's a feral, it probably isn't used to using weapons yet CC: "There's one question, right now, that I want answered before I leave this damned place...Who's afraid of the Big. BAD. WOLF?!"

Blake = Easiest Time In Ever After
Exactly what the header says.
I genuinely think Blake will have the easiest time in Ever After. She understands the whole "who are you?" concept better than anyone else there.
It's Blake who suggests they're in a fairytale. It's Blake who classified her friends as "strength", "defiance", and "purity".
Even though she hides it at first, she's a Faunus.
Though she calls herself a coward for the longest time, she's the girl who isn't leaving.
She's the girl who's done running.
She's the girl who isn't alone.
She's the one who sees so much of herself in her Leader.
It's Blake who mentions how once you've been at someone's side for so long, they become a part of you. But that's it, just a part because you can't forget about the rest.
Blake's entire character arc for the first six Volumes was about figuring out who she was.
I really think she'll have the easiest time out of everyone except for maybe Neo, cause that bitch got a whole book for a character arc about who she was.

Having had an interest in fairy tales and myths for so long, one thing I’ve found —I dont want to say deficient — but notable is that R-W-B-Y all seem to be working off the same Girl Who Fell Through the World tale. When Blake runs through the first chapters of the story, Yang immediately follows with the next chapters, and they land on the tree. There isn’t any difference in the versions of the story that they know, at least in the broad strokes.
But the funny thing about fairy tales is that they get morphed through generations and cultures. It would be interesting if the Atlas vs Vale vs Menagerie etc versions that RWBY grew up hearing all differed in small ways based on the winding path of mythology.
Which is all to say, it would be interesting if they come across a piece in the story that Blake doesn’t know. Perhaps one that only Yang and Ruby know from the version that Summer used to read to them, which Summer knows because [insert Summer lore here].
