205: A real girl
Penny: I'm not real.
Ruby: *takes Penny's hands* Of course you are. You think just because you've got nuts and bolts instead of squishy guts makes you any less real than me?
Penny: I don't- Um... You're taking this extraordinarily well.

Mmmmm been having some thoughts on Ruby and Weiss rn
Ruby is set up to be foiled to Alyx, both in the opening, trying to retrace her footsteps in her story in the first couple of episodes, picking up Alyx's knife at the blacksmith's:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
And in the latest episode, her lashing out being met with her intepreted as being cruel and selfish:
"Like Alyx, she wasn’t just a little petulant or inconsiderate. She was selfish, cruel. Like this whole word was simply make-believe and the rules didn’t apply to her."
"What about you? It's *all* about you!"
JWBY all seem to have different ideas of who and what Alyx was. She exists to teach a moral lesson, she's just a girl trying to survive and find her way back home, she was a mean little girl, she was the villain who rewrote the story.
But then we also have this line from the book said by Oscar in V8:
"She brushed off her bumps and bruises, for nothing hurt worse than the loneliness in her chest."
And... I'm reminded of Ruby's own loneliness, how distant she feels from her own teamates and friends right now, from the pressure of expectations to always be the one with a plan, with a smile and something positive to say to inspire everyone to Keep Moving Forward, put on her by both herself and the people around her. How Weiss is mourning her kingdom, Yang and Blake get to sort their feelings out, Jaune gets to have his breakdown, to the point his own over shadows Ruby's and her feelings are dismissed. And how the way she lashes out at them was both understandable and a long time coming, but also terribly cruel and messy. And that no one can be blamed for not seeing or reaching out to Ruby more when she refuses to let others know how much she's hurting and ask for their help. Ruby is still entitled to her own feelings. So is Jaune and WBY.
Which brings to mind a certain quote shown at the beginning of a certain someone's trailer:
"Everyone is entitled to their own sorrow, for the heart has no metrics or forms of measure. And all of it... irreplaceable"
Tumblr media
Weiss's arc involves her looking outside of herself and learning to see and understand those around her, their own sorrows and burdens they carry with them. And of course, loneliness is a big reoccurring theme in Weiss's arc. Meeting her teammates and supporting them is what leads to her understanding their struggles, hence why Weiss develops from wanting to be the leader to instead dedicating herself to being the most supportive member in team RWBY, and thrives the most when she's fighting with them, but also emotionally supports them through their own struggles.
Tumblr media
She's the one who notices something's off with Blake first in V2, and gets her to open up to the rest of her team so they can all work it out together:
Tumblr media
"So, Blake Belladonna, what is wrong!?"
She supports Yang when she's confronting Raven and dealing with her abandonment issues
"It's okay if... you're not okay."
Tumblr media
Her own sense of self and relationship to loneliness is a healthy one at present, and is something she can use to relate to others.
She understands other people’s loneliness, that Blake in V5 needed space and in time she’d come back, and Weiss would be ready to be there for her when she did. And she also understands Yang’s loneliness in the same volume and that she needed someone there to support her.
“But you’re right. I don’t know loneliness like you do. I have my own version. And, I bet Blake has her own version too.”
"When she's ready, I'll be there for her. And I know we're not as close, but... I'm here for you too."
Tumblr media
Weiss understands that no one's version of loneliness is the same, and every individual needs something different to have their feelings respected and understood. And now in V9 Weiss has to reckon and come to understand Ruby's own version of loneliness after seeing Ruby snap and how much everything has been weighing down on her, and what she needs from her as a friend and teammate.
Tumblr media
All the way back in V1, Weiss grew to accept Ruby as leader and promised to support her:
"Ruby... I think you have what it takes to be a good leader. Just know, that I am going to be the best teammate you will ever have."
And I believe she'll try to hold true to that as best she can for Ruby going forward.

Ruby: You're not like those things we saw back there. You've got a heart, and a soul I can feel it.
Penny: Oh! Oh Ruby you're the best friend anyone could have! *tighly hugs Ruby*
Ruby: *muffled* I can see why your father would want to protect such a delicate flower.

#8: Lookalike
Ruby's Slayer outfit (V2) is partially inspired from Penny's Beacon outfit, notably the central torso piece, with very similar shapes and cuts at the bottom.

I believe it was mentioned in some episode that the Relic's attraction is faint, probably not something that by itself would attract a huge Grimm Attack. Honestly, I'm more appalled that no one, not one of them and especially Qrow thought back to what happened with Volume 2/3 when the Mech got out, the Big Army bringing apprehension, the panic and the Fall of Beacon. Maybe the relic helped, but they were so focused on the fight that all forgot about the possible consequences of it.
You might be right, I’d have to go back and rewatch the first several episodes in which they talk about the relic a bit more to verify.  But, yeah, someone should have remembered what happened at Vale and I’m absolutely floored that no one has even *mentioned* it.

Day 6: Favourite Ship- This was most likely the easiest one for me. I absolutely love Renora and they have been through so much together so you can imagine just gut wrenching vol 8 has been thus far. However, I eagerly wait to see what’s in store for them after the hiatus...

So I rewatched RWBY for the 300th time(that's an exaggeration). Time for my updated ranking of the volumes.
1. Volume 6 - Just an all around stellar volume, full of important character moments and plot. The finale is a bit weak
2. Volume 7 - Another very good volume, my only problem is the lack of team rwby interactions, and it slows a little in the middle before probably the best finale of the entire series.
3. Volume 3 - One of the most emotionally impactful volumes of the series and the home to the biggest plot point in the series. The fall of beacon kicked everything off and is the thing everyone talks about, and for good reason.
4. Volume 1 - Our introductory volume. It introduces characters, has some fun jokes, and starts to teach us about stuff and has a tiny sprinkle of plot, but honestly doesn't bring much to the table, it's only higher than volume 4 because of nostalgia, they would be equal otherwise. With it being the first volume the animation is almost painful to watch.
5. Volume 4 - I know a lot of people don't like this one but I enjoyed it. It has important character beats and introduces themes that were used for the full Haven arc. It's the first volume in the current animation program and thus has some rough patches in animation.
6. Volume 2 - Honestly doesn't do much for me. It introduces the vytal festival, and Sun, and has the very fun Yang v Neo fight with the CVFY fight as well, but plot wise and character wise it just feels weak. It's not memorable, and isn't super interesting to watch.
7. Volume 5 - It's better than people give it credit for, but still isn't great. Animation has really picked up in this volume and it looks pretty good, not great, but good. There are a few important character beats, such as Blake's new determination to not run, her acceptance that she is brave. Blake helping Ilia. But RNJR at Haven is just bland and boring. Sure Oscar arrives but it's a very blank feeling volume. It's much better in the longer format than how it originally aired, but watching it all in one sitting can only do so much. Oh and Weiss gets kidnapped and that whole "Your mom kidnapped me?" Scene is hilarious. And I do love all of the reunions. When Ruby dropped that tea tray? Delicious. When the first thing Blake said upon seeing her team again was "Yang"? DELICIOUS. But those touching reunions can't do much to help the poor storytelling and bland ending fight, even if Cinder v Raven was rad.
Final thoughts:
This ranking constantly changes. Volumes 1&4 switch a lot, as do 2&5, but firmly in top 3 are 6, 7, and 3. They just are so fantastic every time I watch them. And I love rewatching RWBY because everytime I notice something new, and everytime is just as satisfying as the first time. CRWBY has done well to craft a tale that keeps me coming back again and again. I love the well crafted relationships*cough* *cough* bees. Even though there was a serious dip in fight scene quality in 4&5 they still manage to pull together scenes that have my eyes glued to the screen. I love RWBY and will continue to love RWBY. It's just a fantastic show and I can't wait for what comes next.
Thanks for reading all that shit. It's 2am and I get rambly.

I have only just now realized that there is an in-canon reason for the events of RWBY: Grimm Eclipse.
Extreme circumstances aside, team RWBY probably would have gotten a failing grade in their Mountain Glenn mission. They did their absolute best and did listen to Oobleck, but the investigation didn’t really uncover anything and it ended with a breach of Vale’s perimeter. (No confirmed civilian casualties, but there was definitely injury and a ton of property damage.)
The missions in the Emerald Forest were probably make-up assignments.

Penny: You have to hide!
Ruby: Gah, Penny! What are you doing? You don't have to go with them I can help you!
Penny: *throws Ruby into the trash bin* It's okay Ruby, they're not bad people. I just don't want you to get in trouble. Just promise me you won't tell anyone about my secret, okay?
Ruby: I promise.

#23: Trust
Penny barely lies in the main show, but when it happens, it always involves Ruby. The first time she lied was because she didn’t want to loose her new-found friend by letting her know she wasn’t a “fleshy human”, and was globally trying to pretend she was fine (V2C3). The second time she lied was to protect the same girl from Ironwood’s soldiers, after the former had shown her that no matter what was inside her, she was real. (V2C4)
