I'm expanding my horizons of possibility in regard to this whole mess. The last one is sorta optimistic:
1) CRWBY (particularly the writers) honestly had no idea what they were doing with Clover and Qrow, and are therefore incompetent as storytellers and creators in general.
2) CRWBY did know what they were doing and they did so for the sake of cheap shock value and merchandising opportunities, making them both malicious and still shit writers when it comes to episode 12.
3) CRWBY knew what they were doing BUT Clover's relationship with Qrow as it was written and his death are so absolutely necessary to the plot in volume 8 that they were willing to spend an entire volume building up the relationship and awkwardly shoehorn in the death at the end. It's still shit writing as far as episode 12 is concerned, but the writer in me would be slightly more sympathetic to their plight if this is the case. Especially if it means the Clover Resurrection via Staff of Creation Theory is accurate.
So....

Willing to bet my own soul that Emerald uses her semblance to disguise someone as Penny. Probably Ruby, since she’s got the mannerisms down pat and knows the dynamic she’s got with Ironwood.
Turning Penny over just isn’t an option. She can’t open the Vault if she wants to. But letting Mantle die isn’t an option either, so the kids will have to find another solution.

Ok but listen hear me out
Ren and Nora are about to be reunited and we’re all hoping their shaky relationship will improve now that Ren has #Found Himself during their time apart, right?
But here’s the thing. Nora didn’t find herself.
Yes, her moment busting through the door was a Certified Badass Moment, but it wasn’t a moment of self-discovery, which she had just admitted she knew she needed - it was a moment of pure self-destructiveness, spurred on by her belief that the only thing she has to offer the world is her strength.
Consider what she muttered in her comatose state - “Now what am I good for?” Without her strength, without Ren, she believes she is nothing. Nora is not okay right now, physically or mentally.
What I would love to see now - even though, by God, it will hurt - is for Ren - who had also been struggling with feelings of not knowing who he is without Nora, of being afraid to change their friendship into something else - to rush to Nora’s side, fully ready to upgrade their relationship from ‘friend’ to ‘lover.’ BUT for Nora to now be the one with reservations, because she still hasn’t found who she is without Ren.
Nora spent her whole life waiting for Ren to wake up and smell the ginger. Narratively, I think it will be satisfying to see that come full circle - for Ren now having to be the one who waits until she’s ready, to pine for her until she’s found the things that make Nora *Nora.*

the theory that the characters who picked up the relics in emerald forest are going to retrieve the actual relics in the same order may have been debunked, but the theory that the members of team rwby are going to pick the relic associated with the kingdom they played as in the board game still lives on.
yang played as mistral and she retrieved the lamp. ruby played as atlas and she was the one who first picked up the staff. if they follow this path, then weiss will retrieve the sword and blake the crown.

The grimm is a person that was turned into a monster, and that person is Summer Rose. Here’s my evidence.
Formerly a person:
It has near-human intelligence if not full human. It knew to break its target’s aura before the rest of the team could stop it, and use Oscar as a shield as a strategic choice.
It can understand language and speak it, seemingly with some struggle.
We’ve already seen that it’s possible for someone to turn into a monstrous grimm. Cinder is on the way there if she doesn’t get rid of that arm.
Formerly Summer Rose:
Summer is never stated to be outright dead. Only missing and disappeared. Last volume Salem confirmed she’s responsible for that, and it’s entirely possible she chose to do something else to Summer rather than kill her.
The eyes. The grimm doesn’t have eyes. You better bet Salem would cut out Summer’s silver eyes to prevent her from stopping the transformation.
Similarly, other grimm fear this one as if they know it’s different. As if they know it once hunted them and possessed a power to kill them.
If this theory is true, Ruby and her family are in for hell when they find out...
Credit to @mwpriddypinkie for starting this theory.

Salem knows Cinder is lying
I know I know, I said I wouldn't write theories about RWBY anymore and I probably won't after this, but I have watched this scene like 20 times now and couldn't help but feel like something bothered me. I was convinced Salem knew Cinder was lying to her, so I tried to make my arguments based on logic and character knowledge.
Compare how Cinder acted to how she normally acts around Salem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Defiant, brash, emotional, trying to blame others for her failure. Salem knows Cinder. She has been raising her, she chose her to be her vessel. Even if they don't have the connection I believe they have she is horribly attuned to Cinder's feelings, as seen when she taught her how to control her new arm and calling out her trepidation and that she was holding back etc.
This time Cinder flips the script however. She appears apologetic, trying to appease Salem by telling her she failed yet again, that she was sorry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's too controled, almost too innocent. Salem knows how Cinder is like when she fails and that isn't it. She knows Cinder is not being truthful. Her emotions don't match her words. And seeing as we know Salem is able to gauge some of them via the arm I'd say she can tell that with 100 percent guarantee.
Tumblr media
Thing is, Salem doesn't care. Ruby wasn't that important to her. Nor the Winter Maiden powers. Those are Cinder's objectives. Salem wants the relics. Even if she might suspect Cinder has used the last question it is of no concern to her. Sooner or later she will find the Beacon relic.
She won't destroy this outcome by tearing Cinder down again, not when she finally shed her own identity again to fall back into what she wants her to be. Her extension.
Now some people did make the counter argument that Cinder flipping the script could actually be what makes Salem fall for her lies in the first place and that she might see Cinder's different behavior as a result of her earlier punishment and uplifting of her.
While I admit that that could be the case, Salem punished Cinder in an attempt to distance herself from her past abuser, as she fell into an obvious pattern with her reaffirming: Without you I am nothing.
Something she didn't do before.
We can't forget that there is more to their relationship than we have seen so far.
With how Hazel betrayed her Salem is going to be extra on guard with her remaining followers, a fact Cinder doesn't know about yet.
There is also a thing about Salem looking into people's eyes when she wants to know the truth. Cinder did so while reaffirming that she killed Ozpin, she did so as well when Salem demanded to know if she lied to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This time Cinder averts her eyes pretty fast. Because she can't lie to Salem while looking into her eyes.
Tumblr media
That coupled with her unusual behavior regarding to failure and the grimm arm would definitely tip Salem off. It's just not as big a deal to her.
And yet...something was still missing. Something obvious...and then it hit me.
Cinder told her about Ruby and her team using the lamps FINAL question. She doesn't reveal more than that. Salem could ask what it was used for to gauge what was revealed and if Cinder was privy of it, but she doesn't.
She remarks on the staff, specifically that Cinder said it was used by Ruby and co.
Tumblr media
"You said they used the staff. I assume you rid the world of their creation. What did you create in its stead?"
Salem asked it so casually that I didn't even think about it before, but under normal circumstances Cinder would have answered differently.
She would have remarked about the portals disappearing when she used the staff herself to add more flames to Atlas, because even if Salem told her about what the staff can do...which we don't know she ever did, Cinder had the password to summon Ambrosius in the first place. And even though it wasn't touched upon that heavily the last two episodes, it is pretty much alluded to that each relic has a spirit that is summoned via their names, aka a password...or else they would just randomly activate whenever someone holds them in their hands.
So, Cinder was able to summon Ambrosius and she also knew about the earlier creation disappearing when a new one was made. She knew it was the lamps FINAL question.
Things she shouldn't have knowledge about...and yet she did.
Tumblr media
She answered Salem's question and with her answer she revealed way too much...and Salem smiled contently.

Picking apart the last episode before the hiatus and aside from the obvious reactions, my wife and I have a horrifying prediction:
So we're evacuating the citizens (the defenceless, unarmed citizens) of Atlas into dark cramped subway tunnels. Any Grimm set loose in there would cause havoc, but we have specifically seen the Apathy again, and not just a blink and you miss it appearance this episode...Apathy in the tunnels is pure horror movie.
Another observation: remember the last book that Maria throws aside from the Brunswick farms? It's the eighth volume. Next episode will be season 8, episode 8.
Tumblr media
I am very scared.

See, the fact that Ruby is now convinced backup won’t show just makes me so sure it will. And that it could come by the end of the season. We already know Ghira is calling in the Menagerie Militia, but they’ve got friends in Vacuo too. It’s probably a day or two of travel if you’ve got a ship, which means it can happen any minute now.
