@tolkienocweek day two | shipping | rýndil x gil-galad
Rýndil, child of Caranthir and Haleth, dwelt mostly among their mother’s people the Haladin until the fall of Nargothrond, at which time they aided in the rescue and escape of fallen city’s refugees. The leader of these folk was Ereinion Gil-galad, son of the late King Orodreth, and in thanks for Rýndil’s service he offered them a place among his people. Rýndil followed Gil-galad to the Havens of Sirion, and the two grew close in friendship and love. Upon discovering Rýndil’s parentage, Gil-galad revealed that in truth he, too, was a peredhel, the birth-son of Andreth Saelind and Aegnor Arafinwion. Though Rýndil always felt more connected to their mortal heritage and Gil-galad was bound by kingship to the fate of the elves, the two peredhil found comfort and understanding in one another in times of darkness and despair, and in honor of their love and hope, Gil-galad gave Rýndil the name Amdirfael, “brilliant hope.”

[Image description: Colored pencil drawings of a half-elf and a dog. The dog, Tallagar, is a gray Irish wolfhound. The half-elf, Rýndil, is a nonbinary peredhel with brown skin, dark brown hair, brown eyes, and flushed cheeks; they are wearing a green shirt with gold buttons, purple hair ties pulling their long hair in front of their chest, red and gold earrings, and a sword strapped to their back. Rýndil!!! My baby!!!
Well, technically they’re Haleth and Caranthir’s baby, but still, they’re my OC <3
“Rýndil” means “friend of dogs”; it was a name they chose themself after they came out as nonbinary in their childhood. Their best friend was Tallagar, their faithful hound. Though Rýndil’s lifespan was long, given their elven father, they never forgot Tallagar, naming all their successive hounds after the first. I imagine this drawing depicts Rýndil around the time of the Nirnaeth, which would make the dog next to them Tallagar the Eighth.
Details about them are under the cut; BUT you can read my WIP Cause and Consequence for the story of their life fic’d!
I have two versions of Rýndil’s story: one where they never meet Caranthir, and one where they do. But either way, they do know who he is, and they don’t have a good relationship with him. The following bio is vague enough that it works for both versions.
Rýndil grew up among the Haladin and didn’t learn that their father was an elf until they were 10 years old. They always identified much more with their mother’s people, and though they did not become chief after Haleth’s death, they did hang around Brethil defending the Haladin as best they could. Rýndil was not fond of their father, but they did fight under his command during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, where they barely escaped with their life, returning again to Brethil. After the Fall of Nargothrond, Rýndil helped to save some of the Nargothrondrim from the orcs (though, unfortunately, not Finduilas) and befriended both their cousin Celebrimbor and Gil-galad, who they had an instant connection with. Rýndil accompanied the Nargothrondrim to the Havens of Sirion, where they and Gil-galad grew close enough for Gil to reveal that he is also a peredhel, the son of Aegnor and Andreth raised by Orodreth and his wife. Rýndil spent most of their time on Balar with their boyfriend Gil-galad, but when the Fëanorians began making demands on the Silmaril they went to the haven at Arvenien where Elwing dwelt to provide extra protection. In the Third Kinslaying they fought valiantly to protect their adopted people, against their own kin. They killed Amras, and then were killed in turn by either Maedhros or Maglor - no one is quite sure, because Rýndil chose the mortal path and was thus never reborn to confirm which uncle killed them.
“Amdirfael,” meaning “fair-minded hope,” is an epessë given to them by Gil-galad for their pragmatic yet good-hearted mindest :)

@halfelvenweek day seven | freeform: original characters | rýndil hatalquar
And upon the death of their mother Haleth, Rýndil retreated to the forests of Brethil in sorrow, where they remained guarding their people the Haladin for years uncounted...
                                                                   ...but when the Haladin were stirred up in anger against the Dark King in the North, and joined themselves to the Union of Maedhros, Rýndil took up again the name their father had given them and marched with him as Hatalquar, child of Caranthir the dark, captain of Amon Ereb.
