Yorozu Uranaidokoro Onmyoya e Yokoso (2013)

A lighthearted drama about Shomei Abe (Ryo Nishikido) who owns a Fortune Telling Onmyo Shop, with rumours of him being a descendant of Abe no Seimei, the astrologer in Heian Period, whose reputation is known throughout Japan.

While many think of it as a joke, his charisma and psychology in reading and understanding people's behaviours and personalities, enables him to identify the root of the problems that are affecting their daily lives and solve their issues.

Getting entangled in his daily shenanigans as he try to investigate mysteries happening in the neighbourhood, are the teacher, Michiko (Kurashina Kana) and a student with a mysterious past which intrigues Shomei Abe into finding out.

A must watch if you're interested in Onmyoji, Shinto, Heian period culture, or a fan of Ryo Nishikido, and of course, for some good laughs and life lessons (if you pay attention to the unique story each episode).

Evil Does Not Exist (dir. Ryûsuke Hamaguchi) x VIFF 2023.

It's an engaging yet unsettling portrait of anti-capitalist confrontation in the vein of true Japanese politeness. Despite the very serious, often grim tone, Evil Does Not Exist is frequently laugh-out-loud funny in its deliberately stilted dialogue. Still, Hamaguchi contines to make driving in cars and smoking silently (or doing both at the same time) look so damn cool on screen.

Screened at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations program.
