background: a keeper of the moon from a considerably "untraditional" tribe residing within the mountains. the xe'han, whom lei once called family, were a group of miqo'te who sought a different kind of tradition - one taking influence from practices of monarchy. lei, born lorelei xe'han, became victim to her tribe's toxic and harmful ideologies from the very day she was born. her sister, aegis, was considered to be the next in line as ruler, groomed from a young age to become the perfect fit as leader of their twisted view of an ideal community. being her younger sister and second in line to the metaphorical throne, lorelei was held to these very same standards. aegis and lorelei would often sneak beyond the mountain they called home to visit neighboring communities and see the world beyond their own little bubble, and over time, lorelei began to question the life they lived. she began to yearn. she yearned so strongly that returning to their home was almost painful sometimes. while aegis felt the very same, she refrained from speaking on her beliefs. she held all of it in, close to her heart. . . . her younger sister, however, was much more outspoken. having become old enough to see the true nature of the life that she and her sister had been living, lorelei began to speak out against their treatment and rallied travelling adventurers to her aid to help to free her and her sister from the life they were living. for what it was worth. . . it worked. passing trials and tribulations, and enduring near-relentless abuse from their superiors and those who had once called them family, lorelei and aegis were exiled from the xe'han tribe, left to their own devices. while aegis retained the name she was given at birth, lorelei took on the simpler name of "lei", a nickname given to her by aegis from their childhood. no longer bound to the name of the xe'han, the sisters were as they stood - aegis and lei, and nothing else. it was hard, for a time. they traveled the land, wandering coerthas with the limited aid of kind travelers. eventually, the two of them found solace within gridania, and aegis took up training as a lancer while lei performed every so often for as much gil as she could gain. they were happy — free, surrounded by those who cared for them, and finally earning a name for themselves untarnished by their family. . . . and thus rang the bells of war as bahamut reigned terror upon the land. taking it upon herself to aid those in need, aegis became hailed as a savior within the community they had made for themselves. she was prodigious with a lance, and her selfless nature made her fall for every plea that reached her ears. try as she might, lei never found herself able to compare to the adventurous might that aegis held. a hero isn't without their faults, though — and aegis was burdened by her own demons. she became overwhelmed by the expectations of those who looked up to her, and her strength waned, but the destruction did not. her last moments were spent with her arms around lei, a living shield against lei's near-certain death, the screams of her younger sister drowned by the roar of never-ending carnage. ⟢ ◈ ⟣

now living with the painful memory of her sister's death hanging over her head, lei travels eorzea in search of a purpose. she has since taken up lancing in aegis' stead, and serves as a travelling mercenary for hire; one of great standing, even, known town to town for her skill. in addition to her skill with a lance, she has also found comfort in acts of performance that she had clung to during aegis' time alive. a solo dancer who would do performances for gil on the streets, she understands that it isn't much. . . but, in the end, it's something. despite the numbness she feels, she can only press onward.

powers / abilities:

THE ECHO. a gift granted upon them by hydaelyn, the echo allows for lei to experience a wide variety of abilities granted by the gift itself. the most profound ability would be that which allows for them to view the memories of another being, generally without the consent of the other party and uncontrolled by lei herself. though not without its limits, it also renders the user able to resist the temptation of becoming a primal's thrall, able to resist the corruption of light, and grants the ability to understand most languages presented to them.

BLESSING OF THE KOJIN. a gift from the kojin that grants her the ability to breathe underwater.

SOUL OF THE DRAGOON. unholy to her core, lei was one to fall to the temptation of the dark knight's path; now, one with her esteem and dependent on the will of fray, she continues her path as such. a tank class utilizing a greatsword and the will of darkness, the dark knight utilizes offensive and defensive attacks to create a strong, versatile class, useful in a myriad of situations. lei prefers to use her training with the lance to spin her capabilities as a dark knight in a much more DPS-focused route, making her more of an ALL-ROUNDER.

DAMAGE MITIGATION / self shielding.

DAMAGE BOOSTING.

LIVING DEAD. a temporary “undead” form granted to cheat death. if she is not healed in time, she will die.

SALTED EARTH. creates an area of effect that damages anybody who enters.

LIVING SHADOW. pulls a simulacrum of her inner darkness, fray, to fight alongside her.

inherent abilities:

MIQO’TE CHARACTERISTICS. as a keeper of the moon, lei has heightened instincts and catlike intuition, as well as the ability to see well in dim lighting and moderately well in darkness.

AEGIS. a pale white chocobo adorned in armor made to resemble the primal shiva. named for her long-passed elder sister, she's been with her since the beginning.

CLAYMORE. a well-used claymore. it is customized with a glamour to look like the seeing horde guillotine.

WEATHERED SPEAR. a lance gifted to lei by her late sister. it remains in her inventory to this day, despite its unusable state.

Manabu Nakanishi in AJPW 2/11/2020; Full Talent Announcement for Lion’s Break: Project 3; Rumblings About Who Will Not Be At Wrestle Dynasty

This was actually announced almost a week ago but I kept forgetting to mention it: the full talent lineup for the Lion’s Break: Project 3 show has been announced. This will happen at the Ritz Ybor in Tampa, FL, as part of WrestleCon during Wrestlemania Weekend on 4/2/2020. The full slate is:

Hiroshi Tanahashi, Juice Robinson, David Finlay Jr., Rocky Romero, Shingo Takagi, Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, KENTA, Bad Luck Fale, Taiji Ishimori, El Phantasmo, Jado, Gedo, El Desperado, Zack Sabre Jr., Ren Narita, Clark Connors, Alex Coughlin, Karl Fredericks, Amazing Red, TJP, Misterio, Logan & Sterling Riegel.

So this is very heavy on Bullet Club and LA Dojo and related talents. Not really a surprise. What is surprising is that two of the more popular roster members in the USA, Jay White and Minoru Suzuki, are not slated for this show, even tho both are definitely booked elsewhere during Mania weekend, as Jay has been challenged by ROH booker Marty Scurll for a match at Supercard of Honor XIV, whilst Suzuki has been announced for two matches at GCW events, against Chris Dickinson at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport 3, and v. Orange Cassidy at the Joey Janela’s Spring Break show. Perhaps they could still appear as run-ins?

At some point, I’ll post a full list of the NJPW-related matches happening during that weekend.

Manabu Nakanishi made his final appearance in All Japan Pro Wrestling on Tuesday, at the Korakuen Hall opener for the Excite Series 2020 tour. Nakanishi teamed with Jun Akiyama and two former contemporaries in NJPW, Osamu Nishimura & Yutaka Yoshie, in a winning effort against a tandem consisting of Yoshihiro Tajiri, another former NJPW wrestler in Yoshitatsu, Ryoji Sai & Dan Tamura. It was a fun little romp, with Nakanishi getting the win over Tamura with his Torture Rack Argentine backbreaker. The main event of the show saw Triple Crown champion Kento Miyahara tie the legend Toshiaki Kawada’s defense record of 10 successful defenses, beating former Lion’s Gate guest Yuma Aoyagi to do so. Afterwards Miyahara was challenged by current AJPW WOrld Tag Team co-champion Suwama to be his possible record-breaking defense.

Meanwhile, Wrestle Dynasty was only announced this past Sunday, however we are already being told who will NOT be on the show. It seems AEW are getting the word out pretty quickly that neither Chris Jericho nor Jon Moxley will be allowed to work the Madison Square Garden event, which is only fair, I guess, as AEW have exclusive contracts for the pair in the USA (although that isn’t stopping Moxley from making good on a previous postponed booking v. Josh Barnett at Bloodsport 3). MInd you, we still could see NJPW and AEW come to some sort of agreement, which has been already championed by Le Champion.

In other NJPW-adjacent AEW news, Jeff Cobb made a shock appearance on last night’s episode of Dynamite, and will be facing Mox in Atlanta next Wednesday. However, there are numerous reports that Cobb has not signed a full-time AEW contract, and he is still a free agent, meaning he can work whereever he wants, including NJPW. Until that changes, of course. I hope he does still come to NJPW, however, as the company, and the fans, are very high on him. Stay tuned.

personality: A notorious thief known for his clever exploits and cunning magic tricks, Kaitō KID is famous all over the world for his crimes. Vowing to exact revenge on his father’s murderers 8 years after his death, Kaito Kuroba took up the guise of Kaitō KID in order to put the case to rest and put a bar in the plans of the organization at fault. Kaitō KID, his father’s alter-ego and now his own, is a deceptive, clever phantom thief who uses magic tricks to his advantage. He’s earned a fanbase full of young girls and boys alike, many of which idolize him for his seemingly good looks and charming personality.

Kaito, under this disguise, doesn’t hold much of a difference; with careful attention, one could tell they’re simply two sides of the same coin. However, considering his careful attention to detail and convincing disguises, it’s no surprise he has yet to be caught.

Despite his charm, Kaito never appeared to be the smartest, though most idiotic remarks are simply for the sake of appearance. He’s incredibly intelligent and has shown that he can solve a math equation in mere seconds as well as come up with full workarounds for plans that failed without batting an eye. Becoming this smart took time, however, of course, and he still has room for improvement nonetheless. (He is also noted by Hakuba Saguru to have an incredibly high IQ, even rivaling Einstein himself.)

As his own self, Kaito is known to many as being rather petty and egotistical. He talks big, saying all kinds of self-praise, though it’s unsure if he really believes this or if he’s just doing it to put on the appearance of narcissism. Regardless of the intent, it appears Kaito is very self-confident, especially when it comes to his magic. He also exhibits bratlike attitudes, going by a “if I don’t want to do it then I’m not going to” belief, pouting when he doesn’t get his way and arguing with others for the sake of hearing himself argue.

While his occupation may give the impression that he’s a heartless trickster, Kaito is actually incredibly good at heart and shows it. He often plays the role of a pierrot, making himself out to be a fool in order to make another laugh or smile. When doing magic, his greatest achievement is to make others smile, and he’ll stop at nothing to put on a good show. His entire objective is to avenge his father’s death; he never originally sought to gain anything from being a phantom thief, and he never had to in the first place. It was his love for his own father that drove him to do what he did, and he just happened to become famous along the way….

history / background: Born to to Toichi and Chikage Kuroba, Kaito lived as normal of a life as any with a magician for a father. For many years they lived harmoniously; Kaito’s father earned enough money as a magician to support the three of them and even more, as they were quite rich. He had the happiest of childhoods, a boy proud of his father and loved to the ends of the earth by his family. His father often took him to magic shows, and always included him in some magic act. He even taught Kaito an incredible amount of magic tricks to have at his disposal in the future, and slipped life advice in as well, one of which always sticking with Kaito: “Never forget your Poker Face.”

Unfortunately, this life didn’t quite last as he would have liked it to. Kaito’s father was pronounced dead when he was 9 years old. His cause of death was unknown; it was speculated he died in a magic accident, however, his body was never found. Following his father’s death, Kaito’s life seemed to fall apart around him. Like any mourning child, he fell into grief, coping with the loss like any other. Jii Konosuke, his assistant, appeared to have disappeared off the face of the earth. His mother, who previously had been a stay at home mom, travelling only on occasion, proceeded to travel more often, spending a fair amount of the late Toichi’s wealth in doing so. Kaito, from then on, lived alone under the care of his neighbors, Aoko – his childhood friend – and her father, Ginzo Nakamori.

Eight years after Toichi’s death, the phantom thief Kaitō KID – who had disappeared at the same time as the magician, and was never heard from again – resurfaced. On this same day, an eight-year lock was released, and a large painting of Toichi that had been on Kaito’s wall all of those years flipped, causing Kaito to fall into a secret passage hidden behind it.

Behind this painting lay the true hideout of Kaitō KID – or that was what it appeared to be. Presented with many articles for thievery, including the authentic Kaitō KID suit, cape, hat, hang glider, and gun, Kaito was left confused, though he took it upon himself to uncover the truth then and there. That night, he attended “Kaitō KID”’s heist, and unmasked the one behind it all: Jii Konosuke, Toichi’s former assistant.

Jii explained Toichi had been murdered, and that he had taken it upon himself to become KID in Toichi’s stead to lure his murderers out once and for all and bring justice to the late magician. Kaito learned that his father had been the original Kaitō KID – a gentleman thief who had terrorized the world for 10 years following the disappearance of Phantom Lady, the fiendish thief with many faces (who Kaito soon learned had been his mother, as well).

After learning his father was murdered and and finding out Jii’s intent in bringing Kaitō KID, Kaito took it upon himself to become the new KID and lure his father’s murderers out so he could avenge his death. In no time, the title of world-renowned phantom thief was his, and he became known all over the world for his bold thievery and magic tricks.
