prompt: reader is in love with her best friend Robin and has a hard time saying it; based off Sussudio by Phil Collins, takes place in 1985 (only because Breakfast Club and No Jacket Required came out that year, no canon events happen) warning(s): internalized homophobia, a little angsty but happy ending, not proof-read, not edited so let me know if there’s any errors requested?: no but this song screams Robin and i needed to write for my girl word count: 1.9k

"Put on something" Robin pleaded from the plush bean bag chairs you had set up down in your basement. You were trying to pick out the perfect movie to watch with your best friend but you were having a hard time choosing between two movies. Breakfast Club or Carrie? Breakfast Club was newer; only coming out earlier that year but Carrie was one of your favorites. You always rooted for Carrie; the poor girl was just trying to survive high school. You knew what that was like all too well and maybe that was why you resonated with Carrie a little too much. You just wished you were normal; instead you questioned who you were and why you didn't like boys like the other girls in your class. You'd pretend to check out Billy's butt like the other girls in your class but you didn't get the appeal; boys' butts were usually flatter than a pancake.

"Breakfast Club or Carrie?" you turned toward your friend holding each tape beside your head to show her her limited options. She scrunched her nose but pointed to Breakfast Club, you were a bit disappointed but popped the VHS into the player anyway. After pressing play, you quickly make your way back next to your friend. She hands you the bowl of fresh popped popcorn you had finished preparing on the stove before she had arrived for your weekly movie marathon. Marathon was pushing it; the two of you watched about one and a half movies before talking over the rest of the second movie and then forgetting about the TV completely. "Did you see how short Faith Gilmore cut her bangs?" Robin started; not even five minutes into the movie. You giggled at the memory; Faith walking into third period with part of her bangs sticking up because they just wouldn't flatten correctly.

Before you knew it; the two of you were absorbed in each other, forgetting the movie entirely. You listened as she rambled about a test she surely flunked because she forgot to study. You scowled her because you had spent the night together and she had never mentioned a test; you would have made her study instead of gossiping over magazines and gushing about the new Phil Collins album that had been out for a few months now. Robin didn't understand your obsession with the album but you found yourself rewinding the first song over and over again on your cassette player. She makes me nervous and makes me scared.

Her smile lit up her entire her face and you swore you could get lost counting the freckles on her freckle splattered face; your heart ached in a way that you wished it wouldn't. You weren't supposed to feel this way; not about girls. Not about your best friend. Her body was turned towards yours; blanketed knees touching, fabric getting in the way of physical contact. You felt your cheeks grow warm at the thought of entangling your legs in hers and rubbing the soft skin of her thigh. Your body suddenly felt too warm and you had to fling the blanket off of you but in the process you accidentally knock the popcorn off of your lap. "Shit," you curse as popcorn flies everywhere.

Robin raises an eyebrow. "Okay, spaz, what was that about?" she questions while picking popcorn off of her lap. She had a few pieces in her hair and you cursed yourself again for being such an idiot. Your face burned as you frantically began picking up the popcorn; you didn't answer her, refusing to look at her. How could you explain yourself? Sorry I got too deep in thought about how adorable your smile is. No, never. You knew Robin liked girls as well; you had been best friends for so long and she had confided in you were she was struggling with her feelings. You didn't say anything at the time but her telling you about her sexuality had made you realize your own. When Robin said she liked girls it was like something had clicked in your brain and suddenly you were seeing girls in that way. "Okay," Robin says slowly, stretching out the word, after you didn't answer; putting an emphasizing the 'o'.

She begins to pick up popcorn which makes you feel worse for some reason; like you shouldn't have ruined the mood to begin with. Like you shouldn't have a crush on your best friend. Your hands begin to shake and before you can stop yourself; a stream of tears begins running down your face. "Hey! Whoa!" Robin exclaims once she notices the tears and sniffles; she throws the popcorn she had been collecting back on the ground before moving over to you and grabbing your shoulders. "I was just kidding. Are you okay? It's really no big deal. It's just pop-"

"It's not that," you cut her off; you felt raw and exposed like you shouldn't be crying right now. You really shouldn't be crying right now but sobs shook your body as you look down at the half-empty bowl in your lap. You couldn't look at her and you needed a moment. "Excuse me," you said quickly, getting up and running up the basement stairs. Robin didn't know if she should follow or finish help cleaning up the popcorn; she decided to do the latter figuring you needed a moment and she didn't want you to have to worry about the mess when you returned. But she'd be lying if she said she wasn't confused; what had happened to make you suddenly burst out like that? Were you okay?

Once the mess was cleaned up, Robin took the bowl full of floor popcorn and went upstairs to throw away the food and to also find you. She dumped the snack into the trashcan and put the empty bowl into the sink. "Y/N?" she called from the kitchen. She started making her way down the hall towards your bedroom; stopping to smile at your sixth grade that your mom kept hanging in the hallway. You hated it; your braces were very present and were basically the star of the show. You look beautiful, your mom had said but you just didn't believe her. It was Robin's favorite picture of you ever because she had been giving the cameraman bunny ears to try to get you to smile because you hated your braces. "Y/N?" she said again, knocking on your door. The room right at the end of the hall. "Are you okay?" she asked softly, in her sweet raspy voice.

The softness made you want to melt and your heart began to race again. Your face flushed when you realized there was no avoiding this-her. A sigh rumbled through your body as you sat against your door; your heart ached knowing Robin was on the other side, worried about you. You didn't know what to say, what to do. Maybe if you were so quiet she'd just disappear. But she wouldn't; she'd worry and wait the whole night if she had to. "Y/N?" she repeated; worry creeping in her voice. She tried to open to door but it was locked. "Y/N? Come on, what's going on? Are you okay?" She tried the door again; as if it would magically open for her if she tried enough times.

You quickly got up from your spot; standing in front of the locked door. "I'm in love with you," you finally blurted out, not being able to hold it in any longer. You instantly wished you could take the words back but now the air was thick with anticipation and anxiety. Your body shook as the silence was eating you alive; devouring you, leaving your stomach in knots. Tears begin pooling in your eyes again; panic taking over when you heard clicking noises coming from your lock. Was she trying to pick your lock? Oh my god she was trying to pick your lock. You quickly leaned your weight against the door as she tried to make her way into the room. "No! Don't!" But it was too late; it was like Robin had suddenly become the strongest person in the world because she was pushing her way in despite your best efforts.

You turn away from her once she's made her way into your room; you couldn't face her. You couldn’t look at her, you felt sick. You were ruining your friendship right then and there but you couldn't take it back. You couldn't get her out of your head; your only thoughts were her and her dorky smile and how she smelled like vanilla and old books despite you hardly seeing her reading anything besides a magazine or an assignment for school. "Look at me," she turns your body by placing her hands on your shoulders and forcing your face close to hers. "You don't have to say it again," she breathed, her cheeks glowing a shade of crimson. "I just-I love you too and I don't want you to think you can't tell me anything because- fuck! I've been in love with you since you moved to Hawkins!" she admitted, throwing her hands up in exaggeration. That was in third grade; when Dick Robertson kicked dirt in your face (because you were new and because he could) and Robin pushed him into the mud, telling him next time she'd push him in front of the tire swing. You didn't think she'd actually do and later on she admitted she wouldn't have but the two of you still laughed at the look on his face.

Your face burned at her admission; had she really liked your this entire time? Every sleepover? Every lingering glance that you thought maybe something was there. There had been something there; from both of you and you had never realized. Had she told you she liked girls because she wanted to know how you'd react? To know if you liked her too? Well you did; it just had taken you a painfully long time to fucking realize it. Had she really liked you this entire time and you didn't realize it? "Really?" you finally found your voice; quieter and softer than usual but it was all you could muster. She nodded; moving her hands to hold your face to look at her. Her eyes were the most beautiful shade of blue you had ever seen in your life and you knew you could get lost in them if you left yourself. You wanted to get lost in them; in her. As if reading you thought; her eyes flickered to your lips before closing the space between your lips.

She tasted like cherry chapstick, a peppermint she had been sucking on earlier, and the salty popcorn the two of you had been sharing before you spilt it everywhere. It was a beautiful combination that had your mind going completely blank as you kissed your best friend back. You had only ever imagined kissing Robin; wondering exactly what she tasted like and now you couldn't get enough. Your hands gripped the front of her t-shirt; as if she'd float away if you let go, you kissed over and over until you were both out of breath. "Weird way of getting out of watching Breakfast Club," she said once you were apart and she had caught her breath from your frenzied kissing. You just laughed; relief filling your body as your watched your friend with what you could only call heart-filled eyes. You pull her into another kiss before she can say anything else; happy to be honest with yourself and free to be with the girl you couldn't get off your mind.

every single little detail they managed to fit into bmc

yeah there are SO MANY details in this show and its driving me crazy so im gonna amass everything into posts

ik many of these are well known or obvious or whatever but im doing it so anyone who didnt know about any of these could easily learn it all in one go without having to scour the internet or rewind and watch the background in every single scene yk (also i noticed so many of these myself and im kinda proud and its a way for me to get it all out)

i’m also going to be using @/thesquirrelqueer's be more chill archive which is amazing and frankly scary so go give em some love

edit i changed my mind halfway through this cause thats gonna take me forever so if you want to see all the visual details go check that out. its like thats the artists reference and this is the writers reference i think all the little quirks showcase their personality quite well

im gonna start all the way from the beginning so FIRST UP is 2river's "More Than Survive" (album+show, specifically the one 35 minute 👢)

im telling you its LONG so prepare yourself for that. maybe pull up the video to watch side by side so yk what im talking about (the video on yt is "this isnt be more chill" because its NOT be more chill) tiny warning for very mild nsfw mentions cause its bmc

from the first "c-c-c-cmon" up to "and now of course its time to hit the road" theres a sound that sounds like a mouse clicking to the beat in the background. i thought this was to reflect the show when jeremy stops clicking at his laptop at the line "and now of course its time to hit the road" to gets up and put his pants on, but during "but that really isnt such a change/if im not feeling weird or super strange" you can still hear the clicks. maybe its there just for repetitions sake cause it breaks off at "which means ill be uncomfortable all day" and resumes for those two lines, then you dont hear it again. you can hear this one very clearly if you watched the show, but its a little fainter in the album (i figured it out from the album lmao go me)

during the bus scene in the show when everyones going to their places, jeremy almost crashes into rich and you can hear his voice hitch

christine watches this interaction before "sitting down" on the bus to read

i think brooke is asleep during the bus ride, and gets woken up when the bus jerks forward

jake nearly drops his phone too (again this is all based on the 35 minute video on yt. im sure small things change every show, but this is all we got so im picking this one apart)

jeremy keeps smoothing his hair behind his right ear with his palm, probably a nervous gesture. he does it when they "get off the bus"

during the ensembles (i dont think thats the right word but it just makes it easier for me you know who im talking about) "c-c-c-cmon", michael loses his signal on his phone when they get to school, hence the "cmon"

chloe impatiently gestures to brooke to "cmon" and follow her (yk)

jenna waves to christine. christine puts her book down and waves back, then again just watches jenna and then people

rich messes with jenna and she goes to hit him

after the "c-c-c-cmon"s rich jumps out from backstage and hits jeremy in the nuts you can hear jeremys faint noise of pain

in the little dance break jake and jenna are dancing on opposite sides of the stage, then wave at each other (im pretty sure). jeremy looks back and forth between them while they dance and mistakenly waves to jenna when they spin around (just watch it youll know what i mean)

when chloe, brooke and jenna are gossiping, up to jakes "its a good thing i rock at pool" the "rich set a fire" tune plays in the background (something something gossip rumors) chloe is holding a textbook with the earth on it, so science or something probably. there’s a magazine article page that says “what cheating does to [i can’t see what it says]”, which i’m assuming is a reference to jake?? she also have page cutouts of hair products, straighteners, etc, and i think a picture of either taylor swift or brooke i really can’t tell 💀💀when rich writes on jeremys backpack, he pulls him up by the collar to say "youre dead", then pushes him (jeremy pushes his hair back again) into mr reyes' path where hes walking to put up the play sign up sheet. (side note gerards voice cracked on 'dont touch me tall ass" so it sounds like hes having a tantrum and will connolly looks like a meerkat and i love them both)

when jake says "its a good thing i rock at pool" chloe and brooke hide behind a pillar and listen in, then chloe does a sort of "i told you so" gesture. during the whole "i navigate the dangerous hall" scene, brooke chases after chloe as she storms off upset. rich messes with jenna again and she chases him offstage, then mr reyes follows (im pretty sure he pinched her ass) i dunno if this is a coincidence but christine runs after them offstage too. christine and jenna friendship w

jeremy genuinely sounds so excited when he realized it was a sign up sheet and i wholeheartedly believe he wanted to join the play even before christine, she was just the final push

when the ensemble comes back out before the "christiiiiiiiiine" mr reyes comes out dragging rich by the ear while jenna smugly walks behind them (read back to him pinching her ass). rich flips him off after he lets go. jake walks past chloe without looking up from his phone and chloe does a 180 to chase after him. forgot to mention michael has his hood on and bops to his music in the background of all the ensemble scenes but yk its pretty well known

oh god class scene here we go. rich and jake make the 👌👈 sign at michael. rich very aggressively shoves his WHOLE HAND into the circle and opens his hand. jenna raises her hand and mr reyes brushes her off in favor of trying and failing to get jake to stop, so he moves on to rich. he puts a hand on richs arm and sorta makes the "wtf" gesture. rich makes the "sorry about that" motion with his hand still around his wrist which is kinda funny to me (just watch it i cant even describe it) jake turns to talk to brooke, who was previously talking to chloe. jenna waves to christine again. also christine seemed really shy every time jenna waves at her, and never waves first. idk if this is a coincidence but chloe flips her hair back and brooke mirrors it right after. there’s a poster for an anime club on the bulletin board with the sign up sheet

MICHAEL

jeremys fucking bops to his intro i love him

really quick when michael goes "and were almost at the end of this song" and does his dance jeremy bops along with him. NOW if we stretch a bit and say this actually happened then that means jeremy knew what song he was listening to/where hes at based on him dancing to it earlier they know each other so well they are best friends and possibly boyfriends in this essay i will

jeremy flops his head to the side on the beat and with michaels "how was class" slap hes so dramatic

i think i might be tripping but right after "i hate this school" and during the tore it up and flushed it thing michael in the bathroom plays very very faintly in the bg. IM NOT TRIPPING in the album mitb plays during the humanity stopped evolving thing up to "better time in history to be a loser". and THEN from "so own it" up to the christine jingle THE PANTS SONG PLAYS. you can just barely hear it in the boot too

during the first "canigula" michael waves in front of jeremys face and he kicks at him

before jeremys sign up verse michael takes his lunch tray and jerks his head towards the sheet in a "go on" motion and then ofc pushes him towards it HES SUPPORTIVE OF HIM HELLO this furthers my belief of jeremy being a secret theatre kid. jeremy looks back at him on "who cares if people think im lame" like hes reassuring himself can you hear my heart

when rich shouts "GAAAY" mr reyes points and goes after him

when they all come out to dance, jeremy first mistakenly waves to chloe when she waves at jenna, then rich when he goes to dap jake up, then tries to wave at michael but he spins away while presumably listening to his music. christine just watches chloe and brooke talk again

when they all start slowly standing up at the "go"s jeremy looks so confused

also when he jumps off the chair that is PEAK meerkat moment. then he lands and just stands there for like a solid 3 seconds its so funny to me

LORD almighty we're done that took weeks okay uhh please tell me if i should do EVERYTHING everything like broadway off broadway australia cause lord knows im the ceo of bmc australia rn also i dont want to sound pretentious but please reblog cause i spent so much time and effort on this useless fucking post 😭😭 but whatever i had fun

I'm glad you liked it! (Damn you mentioning the album remided that I haven't actually took the time to listen to the whole albums. I'll probably do that. I must have missed on some of his songs)

I knew it! I love how there's fire metaphors because that's important to FNAF lore, but it also fits Dabi perfectly!

He's got so many good songs I can't pick just one lol. I have a soft spot for all his original FNAF songs though, because that's how I discovered him, maybe Mangled is my favorite of those.

From Sancastle Kingdoms it's probably We Are Ignited, Stop Rewind and Live Long Enought To Become a Hero.

Also I love FVKD, it was a collab with Kellin Quinn, he's the vocalist of Sleeping with Sirens, who I also like, so it was cool to see a collab between them. Also the song is SO 2000's I love it so much.

As for covers, All Hail Shadow, Escape the City, Gotta go Fast, Sonic Heroes and The Rumbling are some of my favorite covers.

Nate has a lot of music so if you want to listen to more of his stuff I'd recommend taking your time, or else you might get very overwhelmed.

Ateez 9th member au

Sunhee x Ateez (mainly Yunho and Mingi)

Sunhee was in the practice room with Yunho and Mingi. They were coming up with choreography in preparation for the next comeback. This one was special as the group had 2 siblings and put them up to vote for Atiny to choose which would be the title song for the album.

Sunhee has the mindset of ‘go big or go home’, so as Mingi and Yunho were just pacing it out and doing the moves minimally, Sunhee was going all out. This way, when it came to putting it together, the boys could see what the moves would look like properly.

“Maybe, if we do the move in time with the drum beats you hear in the back,” Sunhee suggested. MIngi looked at her and imagined it before nodding slightly. Yunho looked confused so Sunhee paused the music and rewinded it to the before and got herself ready. She moved her legs with the beat to show them exactly what she meant. Yunho agreed and they restarted that segment again so they could all do it.

Once they finished that segment completely, they restarted the song to do a run through of all they had so far. It was all going well until they got to the new dance bit they choreographed. As Sunhee was doing the segment she had done, her foot was planted in the spot whilst the rest of her leg moved, letting out a crack. She let out a gasp and dropped at the same time.

Yunho and Mingi immediately rushed to her side, tears had welled in her eyes as she held the source of her pain - her shin. Yunho and Mingi were frantically trying to figure out what was wrong and what they were supposed to do, chatting quickly to each other before Yunho made the executive decision to call Seonghwa, knowing Hongjoong was most likely busy writing.

As soon as Seonghwa answered, Yunho told him what happened and asked him what they had to do whilst Mingi was left to distract Sunhee from her pain. He was pulling faces and making panicked jokes, which emitted a teary laugh but when he stopped to listen to Yunho speaking to their hyung, Sunhee was left to her pain and soon began letting out little whimpers.

Yunho adjusted himself and Sunhee, so that her back was against his chest, he wiped her face with his sleeve when he noticed a few tears had fallen down her face and Mingi was still distracting. Yunho called for their manager and for an ambulance as he didn't want to risk any more damage to their maknae if they moved her wrong. When he was done calling for an ambulance, he told Sunhee and Mingi about what was said, and texting the group chat with all of Ateez so they are up to date. It wasn’t that long until the group chat was flooded with messages of concern from the rest of the boys.

Their manager soon came and he had the ambulance crew with them and it wasn’t long until they had Sunhee loaded into an ambulance. Yunho offered to ride with her to which she agreed and the manager was going to meet them there once they had collected the rest of the boys.

Sunhee had been allowed strong pain relief and was left to revel in the pain since Yunho was waiting outside her room for the others. When they finally arrived, San, Wooyoung and Mingi began fighting at the door trying to get in first, that was until Seonghwa pushed passed them gently and went to her side, Sunhee watched it all unfold, laughing lightly under her breath but when she saw Seonghwa start heading to her, she averted her gaze and her smile dropped, she fiddled with the bed sheets. This action was halted by Seonghwa who gently put one hand on hers and used his finger to encourage her to face him using her chin. By the time she could look up at him, tears had formed once more.

He saw the tears in her eyes and climbed onto the bed to sit next to her and brought her into a hug. He cooed softly into her ear, ‘it’s okay princess, just let it all out. Oppa is here now. It’s all okay.’ At his words, she burst into tears on his chest and kept apologising. The sound of her sobs halted the younger members who were still fighting at the door with an unimpressed Hongjoong and Yeosang trying to sort. Jongho stood at the back with a deadpan face but it softened once he heard Sunhee start crying. They finally all shuffled into the room and crowded her bed where she was hidden by her hair and Seonghwa’s chest. He stroked her hair and continued to soothe her.

Once she felt she had calmed down enough to be heard properly, she brought herself out of Seonghwa’s hold and moved so her good leg was tucked to her chest. She glanced at all the boys and whimpered slightly before she spoke.

‘I’m sorry. I am really sorry. I ruined this comeback.’

Hongjoong shook his head and moved so he carefully sat next to her injured leg. He placed a hand on her arm and rubbed it gently to offer her some comfort.

‘Oh, my love, you have not done anything wrong. You have not ruined anything. These things cannot be helped sometimes and the type of injury you have gained? That means you have worked so hard and you need to rest and that is okay. Okay we may have to adjust a couple of positions on the dance but that is nothing compared to making sure that you are okay. You are our top priority, not the comeback.’

She nods at his words, tears still falling from her eyes and she lets out a little sniffle. Her voice cracks slightly as she quietly asks, ‘can I have a tissue, please?’

Her simple request sent four of the boys reeling as they began to pat themselves down and search the room for a tissue. She saw this and laughed slightly before noticing Jongho handing her one. She took it with a smile and thanked him. He stroked her hair gently before grimacing.

She gave him the most unamused look she could muster. ‘Gee, thanks. It's not like I was dancing or anything before this happened.’

The jokiness in her tone caused them all to relax slightly. Soon the doctor came in and explained that she would be taken to x-ray to fully determine where the injury is and it wasn’t long before he was telling Seonghwa and Hongjoong the full extent of her injury and the healing time. They nodded and went back to give Sunhee the news. An orthopaedic doctor came in and began to prepare her for a cast. She chose an orange colour to match the colours they used for their previous comebacks and once it was all dry she got the boys to sign it.

‘You know what, I have always wanted to break a bone for some reason. It has happened at an inconvenient time but at least my dream came true.’ Sunhee explained to San as he signed her cast.

He gave her a bewildered look. ‘Why is that something you wanted?’ He was so confused.

She shrugged. ‘All the children I grew up around had broken a bone at some point and I never had. I always wanted to break a bone just to see what it was like and because the idea of getting people to sign my cast seems cool.’

San seemed satisfied with her answer and kissed the side of her head gently. ‘Fair enough. Now let's get you home.’

She nods tiredly and allows Yunho to transfer her to a wheelchair where she was taken to the car to be taken home. KQ released a statement to say that Sunhee would not be fully participating in the comeback due to injury and would be back soon and she relaxed on the sofa knowing her boys would look after her.

‘I’m sorry. I am really sorry. I ruined this comeback.’

Hongjoong shook his head and moved so he carefully sat next to her injured leg. He placed a hand on her arm and rubbed it gently to offer her some comfort.

She nods at his words, tears still falling from her eyes and she lets out a little sniffle. Her voice cracks slightly as she quietly asks, ‘can I have a tissue, please?’

‘Yah, Sunhee, I hate to be the one to tell you, but your hair is kinda sweaty.’

Rewind: The Who - Who’s Next (1971)

Though it has no filler, Who’s Next is an album that today is unworthy of playing straight through.

For despite its essential perfection, the Who’s second-consecutive masterpiece - Who’s Next followed 1969’s Tommy - is a victim of its own success, rendering the LP’s bookends, “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” unnecessary, despite their exquisite composition, arrangement and performance.

Which leaves the hi-fi at Chez Sound Bites to play “Bargain” through “Behind Blue Eyes” almost exclusively, although the latter, too, is a song classic-rock disc jockeys have seen fit to overexpose. But the bridge - When my fist clenches, crack it open …, is impervious to unimaginative radio playlists.

In any event, guitarist/second lead vocalist Pete Townshend wrote eight instant classics for the album, while bassist extraordinaire John Entwistle contributed one with “My Wife,” on which he also plays the brass and piano. It’s songs such as this that serve to remind listeners that while there is no Who without Pete Townshend, the Who was also a band of, if not equals, then equally essential players, something that’s become more evident in the wake of drummer Keith Moon and Entwistle’s deaths in 1978 and 2002, respectively.

The singular Moon is at his looney peak on such songs as “Bargain” and “Going Mobile,” on which he transforms the drum set into a lead instrument without soloing. The kinetic energy in his playing is the Who’s engine and when Moon switches on the turbo, the band takes off in a way few others have been able to match.

Nicky Hopkins drops in to play piano on the balladic “The Song is Over” and the more-aggressive “Getting in Tune,” the latter being a rare song that leans heavily on a cliché - gettin’ in tune to the straight and narrow - without sounding clichéd. This is Townshend’s genius - as are “Love Ain’t for Keeping” and the other compositions the guitarist cranked out for the group’s fifth studio release.

For a band with the staying power of the Who - and the not-quite-authentic post-1982 lineups that played under its banner - it’s perhaps shocking to remember this classic lineup made only eight albums and just 12 have been released since the band’s 1965 formation. But when records like Who’s Next, not to mention Tommy and Quadrophenia, are among them, quality is the key; quantity an unrealistic dream.

The Stones, all in their 70s and 80s, made their best album of original music since 1981’s Tattoo You. There’s loads of guest stars, but it’s really the sense of a band 60+ years into their career making a rocker of an album that’s reminding fans what we loved about them to begin with!

Interview with Richard for METAL HAMMER N°3 - 1997

The tension in the Rammstein camp is increasing: their second album, Sehnsucht, is due to be released in April. Henning Richter wanted to know how the climbers of '96 cope with the pressure that weighs on them.

Is there actually a Rammstein concept? With a few ingenious associations, resourceful critics had created a wonderful concept: with their flamboyant singer, the group wanted to commemorate the burning victims of the Rammstein air show disaster, while the blazing flames symbolized the easily ignited lust of heated bodies in trembling beds... Nothing there : With a short, disillusioning sentence, guitarist Richard Kruspe destroys all these dreams: “There is no Rammstein concept. We started with a sparkler, from which this show gradually developed, which we are also keeping by the way. On our next tour we will employ a pyro company though. During the last concert in the Berlin Arena, our backdrop caught fire, things fell down, there were people who bled a little... But we visited them all, there are no complaints“, at least that's what he hopes.

But wait, I'm getting ahead of myself. So hit the rewind button again and rewound. The afternoon began with a short audio sample of the upcoming Rammstein album Sehnsucht in a shoebox-sized studio in Prenzlauer Berg. Five titles resounded from slender speakers, although not quite finished yet, they point to the future. One thing is certain, their “Techno-Metal mit Drill-Deutsch” (WOM-Journal) has become more varied. The song 'Du has(s)t' in particular surprises with its rather soft vocals and its harmonious melody. Other numbers like the mercilessly heavy 'Bestrafe mich' are total techno trash. Richard is satisfied, although the expectations of his band, which has sold an impressive 180,000 units of their debut Herzeleid, are of course huge. "You can only lose with the second album," he fears, "either people complain: 'They haven't developed at all' or they complain: 'That doesn't sound like Rammstein anymore'.”

What remains are texts that often deal with "sex and love in extreme forms," says Kruspe, "I'm interested in relationships.” Masochism and sadism are dealt with, frustration and lust are addressed. Incidentally, relationship frustration was a cornerstone of Rammstein. “When we first met in the rehearsal room, we all had stress with women, it went to the point of sheer hatred, which is also reflected in the lyrics. Frustration was a good creative driver, and it also bonded us as a group.” In the meantime the stress seems to have disappeared, almost all Rammstein butchers have wives and children, Richard already has two. “Kids take you out of your world, they give you a new perspective. Get kids,” he recommends, but frankly, he doesn't quite convince me.

In the course of the interview, Richard's will to stand out from the crowd with Rammstein shines through again and again. “I like bands like Metallica or The Prodigy, who see their own way. That's why I'm also into techno, because it's European music that differs from the vast amount of American productions.” He sees America as a real challenge for his combo. Since Kraftwerk and the Scorpions no German band has managed to be recognized there. After all, Rammstein has had two good experiences with American artists so far. On the one hand, cult director David Lynch used two of their songs for the soundtrack of his new film "Lost Highway", on the other hand they toured with the Ramones. “It was certainly an unusual composition, but it worked. The fans accepted us. The Ramones themselves were great, bassist C.J. always wore a Rammstein shirt from day two. Joey used to sing (mimicking a typical American R) in the dressing room, 'Rrrammstein, Rrrammstein'. He has a bar in New York where he constantly plays a live recording of our concert.”

My interviewee reveals that computers played an important role in the creation of the new material. “Up until a year and a half ago, I was also very skeptical about samples and computers. Now they fascinate me. I feel like making modern computer music, after all you can't resist the development of the times. When it comes to composing, I picked up the guitar again after a while. A lot of these techno computer freaks don't play an instrument, that's definitely a disadvantage. I love songs, and they're just easier to write on the guitar.” Several members of the 'Tanz-Metaller' now work with a computer, curiously enough keyboarder Flake doesn't have one, although bits and bytes should actually be closest to him. It is also strange that singer Till Lindemann does not give any interviews, as Kruspe explains in a dry and nebulous manner: "He doesn't say anything because he simply has nothing to say.” Ah.

That is completely natural, as is Lindemann's strongly rolling R, claims Richard, "the man comes from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, people sometimes talk like that there.” When I asked whether Rammstein “Jean Claude Van Damme-Double” is close to East German singers such as Eugen Balanskat from the Skeptics, my counterpart vehemently denied: “Till is more into Jello Biafra from the Dead Kennedys.” Right from the start, it was important for the sextet to appear as a group and not to single out any member, maybe frontman Lindemann's non-appearance has something to do with it... The effort to always appear together was put to the test when the Prenzelbergers started their career: “We calculated that we were together for 200 to 250 days last year,” groans the muscular guitarist, “that was really hard.” The men even marched together to swim to keep fit on tour. At the moment the musicians are enjoying their freedom, taking care of the kids before they go on an extended tour of Germany again at the end of April.

The disc was recorded in Malta, in the same studio where Braunschweig's Such A Surge recorded their major second division AGORAPHOBIC NOTES. The capital cities again hired Jacob Hellner as the sound coach, and the recordings were again mixed by the mix genius Roland Prent. "It's about time we changed producers, though. At first we still had a lot of respect for him, but now we've noticed that he only cooks with water. That's why we co-produced the album,” says Kruspe with a touch of disappointment. The record company also tried to have a say, which he thinks is only natural. “They invest a lot of money and now want to make money. But we didn't listen to the Company envy, relying more on our instincts.”

Rammstein are sailing their very own course, summarizes Richard, who appropriately wears American sailor pants today. Musicians are like sailors, I say, they're always on the move and there's a bride for everyone in every port. “If you mean groupies, all I can say is I'm not into them. I like equal women, groupies are so submissive. But one thing is true: like sailors, we are rarely at home.”

🎤🎵Happy Birthday, 🎤🎵Happy Birthday, 🎶to Scottish singer and actress Clare Grogan.

Clare attended the all girl Notre Dame Convent School, at the time the only single sex comprehensive school in Scotland, although it welcomed boys in 2021 for the first time.

She was dancing at the Glasgow College of Technology at aged 17 when a fight broke out, a bottle was thrown and the innocent Grogan was hit in the face and left with a prominent scar on the left side of her face. It didn't hold her back though, within 3 months she was cast as Susan and ended up " lying-down-dancing " with John Gordon Sinclair in Gregory's Girl. The films producers objected to her being cast due to her facial scar but Bill Forsyth insisted Clare was the girl he wanted in the part and she never looked back.

John Peel championed her group Altered Images and got them a record contract after seeing them play support for Siouxsie and the Banshees, making Clare famous on two fronts.

Forsyth cast Clare again in his 1984 film Comfort & Joy, her other main role was as Kristine Kochanski in the brilliant Red Dwarf, playing Dave Lister's love interest in series In series 1, 2, and 6 of the BBC comedy sci-fi.

Other TV roles include appearances in Blott on the Landscape, Taggart (of course) and in Father Ted. Soap fans will also remember her in Eastender in the late 90's, one of her most recent parts was in the 20013 Scottish gangster flick, "The Wee Man" She is married to Altered Images band mate Stephen Lironi, they have an adopted daughter.

Clare has been doing some theatre work, up to the covid pandemic, she is also a regular on the "Rewind" and 80's festivals around the country with Altered Images.

The first Altered Images album in almost 40 years was releasedlast year, Grogan r and her hubbie recorded the album with Bobby Bluebell from the Bluebells and Bernard Butler, formerly of Suede and McAlmont & Butler, and has tracks co-written with Texas member Johnny McElhone (who was the band's original bass player).Mascara Streakz was released on 26th August 2022.

This rockstar life - 3.18 Mixtape

Content: just some words. *insert self-indulgent fic writer waffle about writers’ block, feeling mopey, blah blah blah*

“Um...so this is the...third go at recording this thing. I couldn’t think of anything to say. So I’m just going to play a few things, and maybe read something. You said… you said you wanted my voice so…”

I had, and just thirty seconds in, even through these crappy headphones, my eyes are already welling up at the sound of that familiar soft accent. I’d promised myself I would save it for as long as possible, until I really, really missed him. I lasted all of… thirty-five hours and seventeen minutes. Pathetic. It’s not like we’ve never been apart before, he’s always coming and going, but maybe it’s worse because I know I won’t see him for three weeks this time (‘No girls at rehearsals’). Of course there’s phones, but we suck at timing and end up just with snatched minutes as he’s dashing off to a photoshoot, or messages left on the answerphone at 2am.

“Anyway… I think you’ll recognise this one from the album.”

I do recognise it, but it takes a few bars because I don’t think I’ve heard it on an acoustic before. It’s a little Zeppelin-ish done that way. It’s a real power ballad on the record, but I think I prefer it this way. It’s funny, I hear Steve playing all the time, but very rarely a whole song; usually it’s just the same bit over and over while he’s trying to work something out, or a screeching Jimmy Page solo to blow off steam! He doesn’t practise as such, I don’t think he needs to. Music runs through him all the time and he just picks up a guitar when he needs to let it out into the world.

“This next one is one of Sav’s… I dunno what we’re doing with it. We did the demo but… too many ballads I guess. But it goes sort of like this.”

Partway through he breaks off - “There’s a solo… my solo… goes here. But I don’t think I can do it on this, so you’ll have to imagine.” There are some scraping noises which I guess is him fiddling with the microphone, then all I hear for a minute or so is breathing.

“I didn’t know what to talk about - you know me, not much of a ra-con-teuuur - so I thought I could read you something instead. So this is what I’m reading… trying to read. The Odyssey. It’s about this Greek king who fought in the Trojan war and then has all these adventures trying to get back home. It takes him ten years, and I think it might take me as long to read it, heh-heh.”

When he starts to read, his voice is whispery, hesitating over the Greek names and longer words, but he gets a little bolder as he gets into the rhythm of the story. If you’re a boy and you grow up on a Sheffield housing estate and go to the local comp*, reading is not exactly encouraged. At all, let alone classical myths. He has read a lot since then, in a rather scatter-gun, autodidactic fashion, but he’s not exactly had the chance to engage in literary debate, so he’s always afraid he’ll be mocked for misunderstandings or mispronunciation. But I love listening to him talk, about books, about anything. Sometimes I make him tell me stories when I can’t sleep, lying with my head on his chest hearing his heartbeat in one ear and tales of childhood escapades in the other. Oh god, this is not helping! I miss him more than ever now. I pull the pillow from his side of the bed and hug it to my chest, hoping the lingering hint of his smell and the even cadence of his recitation will soothe the loneliness.

More microphone fumbling noises rouse my mind from its dreamy state. There is some mumbling, ‘how much tape…? Okay, let's give this a go’, and then strumming. Now this I recognise instantly; it’s my favourite Zeppelin song. That is so sweet of him. He starts to hum the verse and then, so low and quiet I almost miss it, ‘someone told me there’s a girl out there…’. Oh. Did I really…? Quickly I press rewind and spool back a few seconds. Steve doesn’t sing. Ever. He says he can’t. He mimes on stage. He doesn’t even sing in the shower. But that… that is most definitely Steve singing. Just a few lines, then he la-la-las the rest. I replay it three more times, then get scared I’m going to stretch the tape or something. I’m so… it’s like I’ve been given a precious jewel, just for me. Oh my heart.

“G’night love. I’ll see you very soon.” and then the click of the recorder being switched off.
