Top 20 BEST Animated Series of the 2010s-15th Place
The fifteenth place is a tie, primarily because both of these shows are equally good, in my opinion. Some of you might disagree with me, but to that I say-
ALL ABOARD THE HATE TRAIN!
CHOO CHOO!
#15-We Bare Bears (2015-2020)/Big City Greens (2018-)
The Plot(s): Both shows involve an unorthodox family trying to fit in with what’s considered normal. In We Bare Bears, it’s three brother bears (Grizz, Panda, and Ice Bear) trying to fit in with modern society. And in Big City Greens, it’s a family of farmers (Cricket, Tilly, Bill, and Gramma) trying to adjust to city life after the family farm got sold due to low profits. In both shows, these characters make new friends, go on wacky adventures, and learn that they’ll always be okay as long as they’re together.
Aside from that brief description, I can sum up these shows in two words: Charmingly simplistic. There’s no intense continuity, no ongoing story arcs, or even an evilly evil villain hoping to take over the world...for the most part. These are just two different shows, with two types of families trying to get by in life. And honestly, it’s those families that make these shows work.
The dynamic between the bears in We Bare Bears is what makes the show so charming to watch. These three actually act like brothers (from what I’ve been told. I, unfortunately, don’t have brothers), and seeing their brotherly bond does nothing less than putting a smile on my face. Plus, the loyalty they have for each other is downright heartwarming, especially when the series flashes back to when they were kids.
And while I can’t entirely say that the Green family has the same amount of charm to them, there is one thing that I love. And that’s the fact that (kinda spoiler warning) they are an almost complete family in a Disney cartoon, with both parents being a prominent role in the series. Yes, Bill and Nancy are divorced, but that doesn’t mean Nancy isn’t around for her kids. She shows up frequently after her introduction and even gives off an impression that she’s a semi-good mom. In fact, Bill and Nancy seem to still have a level of respect for each other despite missing their old spark. It’s almost as if the writers are trying to say that not all divorces mean the destruction of a family, which I can respect. Because it can teach kids to not be afraid of the “D” word (kinda spoilers over).
But it’s not just the main characters that shine in these shows. The members of the supporting cast in We Bare Bears have a level of likability and depth. Chloe is often outgoing and laid back when she’s with the bears, who fails to make any other connections due to being a child prodigy. Ranger Tabes is often audacious and enjoyably energetic while also taking pride in her work and feels hurt when she thinks she’s not taken seriously. Then there are Charlie and Nom Nom, who have a level of charm to them. Despite being intended to come off as annoying and unlikable. Even the background characters are impressive due to the diversity of cultures and races that a viewer can see in each episode.
As for Big City Greens, the characters do not really have any depth outside of the main cast. What you see is pretty much what you get with most of these characters, aside from maybe Gloria, but even then, it’s only on occasion. Big City Greens also dodges showing diversity by having everyone be a shade of bright pastel colors. But I give credit to the show for having the first gay couple in a Disney cartoon...even though they get dropped by season two and are never fully confirmed as gay. Which pales in comparison to Luz and Amity from The Owl House, but it was at least a start! Sometimes, you gotta take baby steps before taking leaps ahead of the game. And don’t get me wrong, while I still prefer characters who have depth, that doesn’t mean I hate the characters in Big City Greens. Everyone does their job of adding to the story and making audiences laugh. In fact, making audiences laugh is what I would say Big City Greens does better than We Bare Bears.
Now in fairness. We Bare Bears is pretty funny from time to time. However, when it comes to which series makes me laugh the most, I have to pick Big City Greens. The first few episodes alone had me laughing much more than most of We Bare Bears' first season. It also helps that the show has a very random sense of humor elevated by the show’s energy. But I'll give it to you that comedy is subjective, and there are a couple of jokes that don’t work in Big City Greens. The best example is when the show lingers too long on a joke that didn’t really work as much as the writers thought it did. But that does not change the fact that Big City Greens is still a pretty funny show.
However, while We Bare Bears lacks comedy, it more than enough makes up for it with charm. This show is downright delightful to watch in almost every episode. Rarely do I feel anger when watching this series (which I wish I could say about previous/future entrees), and it has everything to do with the cast. I wasn’t kidding when I said that even intentionally annoying characters have a level of charm and likeability to them. In fact, the only bad episodes are when they begin to act uncharacteristically cruel and selfish. Mostly because those words could not be farther from a definition of We Bare Bears.
However, if I had to pick out the major fault that We Bare Bears have, it’s the fact that the show plays things a little too safe. For instance, whenever the show tries to go dark, it is pretty tame compared to other shows. The best example is how nearly every dangerous predator in this series somehow looks adorable. Wolfs, snakes, and even cougars (the big cats, not the middle-aged women) are somehow drawn to be cute and cuddly. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want a show to make kids think that dangerous woodland creatures like these are something you could just give a belly rub. I understand that this is a kids' show, but Big City Greens not only has the same rating, but it’s on the Disney Channel. And yet, it feels like that show has bigger cajones than the series formerly on the same network as Regular Show. That is not a good thing.
Going back to Big City Greens, I can sum up every problem I have with this show with one character: Cricket Green. Now I don’t entirely hate Cricket...but I’m willing to bet other people will. I can tell that the show is trying to make him a lovable little rascal that’s sort of a mix of Bart Simpson and Timmy Turner. But in the end, I think he causes more damage than either of those characters have in their entire lives. Cricket claims how sorry he is at the end of every episode, but I doubt he learns his lesson. We Bare Bears has a similar problem with Panda, but even when Panda is at his most selfish, he doesn’t do anything harmful to anyone but himself (except in the episode “Braces," but we don’t need to talk about that). Plus, even when he does go a tad too far, Panda’s voice actor (Bobby Moynihan) does a great job at making Panda seem sincere when he’s apologizing for his actions. Not to mention that Bobby gives a sense of realism and relatability with most of Panda’s lines. Then there is Cricket’s voice actor, Chris Houghton, an adult man trying to voice a child. I understand the logic behind using an adult over a kid (this happens more times than you think), but I feel like I would get the impression that Cricket is an innocent kid who doesn’t know better if he actually sounded like a kid.
In the end, neither of these shows are really that impressive compared to others. Thankfully with good comedy, charm, and great characters, they still manage to be really good for all ages. So while We Bare Bears and Big City Greens may not be as big as any other show in the last decade, they’re still good enough that you might just bear it!
(Two for one! I told you I would make up the embarrassment that was Dan Vs.!)

001 We Bare Bears?
001 | Send me a fandom and I will tell you my:
Favorite character: Ice Bear, all the way, without competition. Ice Bear is best bear
Least Favorite character: In this case I’m gonna try to go based on least favorite of the main characters and supporting cast, rather than picking a purposefully unlikable one-off character like I normally would have. With that in mind I’d have to say that Nom Nom is my least favorite of the reoccurring characters. Not that he isn’t an interesting character, he’s just my least favorite compared to the others.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Uh, oh god, ok, Panlie, GrizzNom, and that’s about it. I really don’t ship much in this series, especially since my shipping interests tend to revolve around my fav character and in this case I genuinely see my fav character as being more ace.
Character I find most attractive: I dunno, Tabes is pretty hot. I know I mentioned it in another post, but when she’s swinging that bear trap at the trapper guy in ‘Rescue Rangers’, boy howdy was that Tabes at her hottest.
Character I would marry: Tabes, I would marry Tabes. She is the hot, enthusiastic, beefy, nature wife of my dreams.
Character I would be best friends with: Panda and I have a lot of the same interests so I could see us getting along in that respect, but Chloe and I are both more shy, awkward, but friendly and enthusiastic people when we find our ‘right people’, and my baby face and young demeanor making most people think I’m much younger than I am means that I could relate a little to her problems of being so young, so I think that ultimately Chloe and I would be much better friends.
a random thought: Baby Panda asks the question of how they’ll be able to breathe in ‘Lil Squid’ and Grizz’s solution is for them to go into the helmet. But once in the helmet under the water there’s no way for them to get new oxygen, eventually they’ll suffocate from it. I know, I know, it’s a cartoon, but for some reason I can’t seem to let it go.
An unpopular opinion: Listen, I like Panda, but also I think too much of the fandom gives him the ‘uwu precious nervous cinnamon role baby’ treatment and are too quick to ignore a lot of his shittier moments, unless it has to do with Charlie. I dunno, it’s not that the fandom is bad or anything, but it can be a bit of a mild irritant.
My Canon OTP: I dunno, there really aren’t that many canon ships in We Bare Bears, despite Panda’s continued attempts at getting a girlfriend. Like, the only reoccurring characters to get into actual romantic relationships were Daryl and Lucy, and even then it was in more one-off appearances. I’m sure this is so the show doesn’t risk getting too bogged down in relationship drama to the point that it detracts from the actual brotherly relationship and message that the show is intending. Needless to say, to make a long answer short, I don’t really have one.
My Non-canon OTP: Panlie is cute but honestly I think Grizznom is even better just cause I think their specific character development leant itself more towards it. Also cause I love Grizz and think he deserves nice things and he so badly wants Nom Nom to be a good person and is dedicated to helping him become so and them ending up dating is really just an end result of all of it.
Most Badass Character: Wow, the immediate answer would lend itself to Ice Bear, but it honestly is hard to pick between him and Tabes, they’re both pretty hecking badass. Can I say both? Is that allowed?
Most Epic Villain: ................. We Bare Bear’s villains really aren’t all that ‘epic’. For the most part they’re pretty dorky and purposefully losery to draw home the point. Either that or they aren’t actually villains......... the pigeon cartel.
Pairing I am not a fan of: Uh, anyone who ships Ice Bear and Chloe, stop, get some help
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Slight movie spoilers, but Panda. If the movie truly is intended to be the end of the story, then definitely Panda. They did the boy dirty. Also Yana, since we were left with so many questions and now supposedly we aren’t gonna get anything else. She deserves SOOOOO much better.
Favourite Friendship: Chloe and Ice Bear all the way. It’s such a sweet friendship and I love how Ice Bear, who really is the more solitary type, clearly loves being with Chloe, and Chloe doesn’t seem at all bothered by his quietness or quirks and her absolute insistence to find something that he enjoys doing to the point of risking herself is just so precious. Equally, his protectiveness is very sweet and wonderful. Just, I love their sweet and wonderful friendship so so much,
Character I most identify with: Panda, nough said.
Character I wish I could be: I’ve mentioned it before but by god do I wish I had Ice Bear’s ability to be so unapologetically himself. Also I wish I was as strong, as good of a cook, and as skilled at fighting as he is.

ep ratings (that I’ve been meaning to do) & a little farewell note to the show! long so J to skip if the readmore doesn’t work c-:
I'm really sad to see this show go, & it's a shame it didn't get much of a sendoff... I heard the crew weren't aware this was their last season, and I can't help but wonder why CN would cancel it now? it's a pretty phenomenal commercial success & has become a huge iconic staple for the channel. maybe they were unsure about the latest round of episodes, the smaller specific fanbase or just wanted to focus on rebooting it through the spinoff. I also wonder if another season would've been an improvement or if the seasonal decline would've intensified
regardless it really is tragic that the wonderful character development from over the years got brushed aside without time or planning for a real conclusion. the side characters & their found family relationship with the bears has always been my favourite part of the show, with the genine & emotional episodes always scoring as my favourites. I suppose the supporting cast were never as marketable as the bears but they always felt like the heart of the story to me. maybe I can't bring myself to be with this show but I'm not overtly angry about the lack of confirmation regarding ships since it didn't feel concretely promised, but I will say the way it was handled says a lot about the current mindset towards them in the entertainment industry
I get the feeling Daniel had a different direction in mind for WBB, which is probably obvious in retrospect given the vast tonal variance between his original comics & the end product; the crew have always been the ones adding their extra soul to it. that said I don't necessarily want to chide him for it, since it's wonderful that he was able to create WBB & have it be so well received, along with giving him an avenue to express his experience of living in the USA. I think I'm just eager to see what kind of a story could've been told with the more emotional, heartfelt side of things. but at least it's a story that's still open to being told by all the wonderful, imaginative members of the fanbase, who it's been an absolute pleasure watching these bears with all these years!
I may post my old review that summarizes my feelings on this show sometime but for now, thank you to everyone on the crew who put so much love & soul into these wonderful bears over the years! I'll never forget the joy of watching all the trailers & sneak peaks with my brother while waiting for the show to come out, slowly meeting & learning about all the characters, and having a blast making fancontent for them with everyone... these memories will stay with me as a source of comfort, laughter & inspiration for many years to come :-)

At first it was the way the bears were stacked atop each other that appealed to me. I’d see ads for We Bare Bears while watching other shows and think, “That is adorable/charming/cute/apealing?” Their shape, the color arrangement. Just the whole stacking thing. But one weekend shortly after the 2016 election, I made myself chocolate chip pancakes and decided I’d watch an episode of this bear cartoon and see what was what. I ended up spending the day watching episode after episode of We Bare Bears.  My first episode—or at least the one that I remember most clearly—was, “The Demon.” In it, Ice Bear and his friend Chloe Park face the terror of the neighbor’s little dog after Chloe accidentally loses her hoody to the fiend. It is nicely done with Chekov’s potato gun appearing in the first act appearing again in the third. It has elements that I most like about the show at its best. A reliance on character to drive the plot, conflict and action; diverse characters; a careful calculus around consequences; appropriate stakes; and, resolutions that tend toward ending in a better place than the episode began. These elements aren’t easy to pull off, especially in an eleven minute episode.
In We Bare Bears, three bear bros, Grizz, Panda and Ice Bear, live together in a cave in the woods. We Bare Bears is set in the Bay Area.  A lot of cartoons and shows are set supposedly non-specific anywhere or everywhere that only make them seem even more the product a specific place, often, ironically enough, California. But We Bare Bears goes ahead and lets their place be their place and then sees what stories they can tell. You might have suspected from their names that these bears are not biologically related. The bears are a chosen family with Grizz as the oldest brother and Ice Bear as the youngest. And even though Ice Bear is, as he says, “best bear,” all the bears have their own charm. Grizz is an outgoing and enthusiastic brown bear. His wants to be cool and to have a lot of friends. Sometimes he tries too hard or is too caught up in his own enthusiasm. But he tries hard and when the bears befriend Chloe, he learns some Korean to try be a good friend and maybe to reassure her father and grandmother that being friends with bears is alright. Grizz loves 1980s and 1990s action movies and has made a couple of his own “Crowbar Jones” shorts, starring himself as Crowbar Jones and “Pando,” a comic relief sidekick clearly inspired by Panda.
Panda, aka, Pan-Pan, is as his name implies, a panda. He’s also an otaku loves anime, manga, Japanese and Korean pop music and K-dramas, though likely not Vampire Prosecutor, more say, Boys Over Flowers and those body-switching romantic dramas, like Secret Garden (2010). Panda loves the idea of being in a relationship, but it’s probably a good thing he isn’t. He has a waifu body pillow named Miki-chan. Panda is intensely involved online hoping for likes and shares and trying to meet his true love. He’s an otaku who doesn’t read or speak much Japanese or Korean.  He’s allergic to everything and is vegetarian while his brothers love meat. Panda is sweet and sensitive but also capable of becoming resentful to the point of supervillainy.
Ice Bear always refers to himself as “Ice Bear,” except that one time he was conked on his noggin and started wearing a man-bun and hanging out with tech bros. His room is the bears’ refrigerator, where he knits and watches figure skating. Ice Bear was nonverbal as a cub and his affect does not necessarily reflect what he is feeling on the inside. Ice Bear comes across as neurodivergent and probably on the autism spectrum.
Ice Bear is clearly the coolest and arguably as he claims, “best bear.” He has what Grizz and Napoleon Dynamite would call, “skillz.” He speaks Russian, Korean, Pigeon and, I expect, many more languages. He likes axes, throwing stars, martial arts, salsa dancing, cooking, knitting and making robots. Ice Bear also has a secret life his brothers don’t know about. One revealed particularly in two episodes that are We Bare Bears influenced by Drive (2011), general Nicolas Winding Refn-ness and by John Wick, “Icy Nights” and “Icy Nights II.”* The song playing when Ice Bear enters the city in “Icy Nights” recalls “Nightcall” from the Drive soundtrack.
Grizz befriends Wyatt the biker at a gas station in the desert.
The bears make friends, though. They befriend Chloe Park, a 12-year-old Korean-American child protege who comes to study them for a college biology course. Chloe is stressed and lonely being the only tween in university. And they are also friends with Ranger Tabes, who reminds me of Rosie the camp director from Lumberjanes. Tabes out for their part of the forest. And they are friends with Charlie, a bigfoot voiced by Jason Lee, so I always kind of think he’s Earl from My Name Is Earl. Charlie also hosts the Halloween episodes, each a little horror anthology. (One with a fantastic take on Scooby-Doo).
We Bare Bears has some superficial similarities with Polar Bear Cafe, which also features a polar/ice bear, panda and grizzly bear–as well as a llama, sloth and penguin. Polar Bear Cafe‘s Panda is obsessed with being cute.  Like Ice Bear, Polar Bear is responsible and can drive a car. I enjoy his attempts to teach Penguin to drive.
“Ice Bear is responsible.”
There is a grizzly bear who gets most of his clothes from the Harley-Davidson store. But Polar Bear runs a cafe. There are a lot of puns. And the show skews towards a younger audience. That said, I think We Bare Bears make a little nod to Polar Bear Cafe with the “Coffee Cave” episode, in which the bears turn their cave into a cafe. Ice Bear becomes a barrista to facilitate Grizz hanging with cool people and Panda tries to make time with a woman he thinks is cute.
I enjoy We Bare Bears‘ references to film, tv, games, comics and cartoons and even Walt Whitman. When the bears work “shushing the unshushable” in an Oakland cineplex, there are a slew of film references that would warm the heart of the most cantankerous cinephile. In another episode, the bears recall films like Phase IV (1974) and Empire of the Ants (1977) as they obey the wishes of a queen bee.
The bears listening to the queen.
Ranger Tabes in peril!
Panda is pursued by a virtual reality Doof Warrior from Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). And there’s a bit from the beginning of Quincy Jones’ Ironside theme in “Bear Cleanse” when someone is secretly eating cake. It might’ve been taken from Kill Bill (2003) or from Lo Lieh dangerous fists in King Boxer/ Five Fingers of Death (1972). Grizz knows it from Kill Bill, but Ice Bear definitely recognizes it from King Boxer. I like that the creators are using art that they like. And art that I like, too.
While the structure is episodic, there is no total reset at the end of every episode. “Icy Nights,” for example, uses a number of elements from earlier episodes—Ice Bear’s modified roomba, for example. And human characters who are almost doppelgangers of the bears, Tom, Isaac and Griff, appear first in “Panda’s friend” and then in two more episodes, “Bro Brawl” and “The Mall.”
The show alternates between episodes featuring the bears in their presumably current adult forms with ones about the bears as cubs. If you must have origin stories, the baby bear episodes provide them and do a pretty good job. The baby bear episodes also do a good job of capturing a kids point-of-view. In general, I prefer the adult episodes, but that might be because I am an adult. As always, I don’t begrudge kids’ interests being put before my own in cartoons meant for kids.  I do, however, very much enjoy “Los Escandalosos,” in which the baby bears become a tag team in a kids’ lucha libre league in Mexico. There are some sweet luchador names in that episode and mariachis sing a ballad about los Escandalosos. Incidentally, “Escandalosos” is also the Spanish name for the show. I appreciate the pun making the title, “Scandal Bears.” It only took me two days catch it, but I did.
I also appreciate that We Bare Bears rarely translates the Spanish, Korean or Russian in the show. The writers relies on us to understand generally what is going on and not freak out when we don’t understand specifically what is said. There are times when we don’t understand something and that’s okay. I particularly appreciate that while we learn why Ice Bear knows Russian, we don’t see when Ice Bear went from non-verbal to verbal. Neurodiversity isn’t exactly the same kind of plot point as that time a Russian man in the arctic took in Ice Bear. At the same time, if the writers did decide to show the first time Ice Bear spoke, I trust them to do right by him and neurodivergent folk.
The bears are trying to participate in the human world and figure out how they fit into it. They not like they other animals anymore, but that’s okay. Though it might negatively impact their health as they prefer to eat, say, pizza bagels over bamboo and seals. And they’re not quite like humans cause they’re still bears, and that should be okay, but it’s not always.
Panda being hassled by the Man.
Daniel Chong talked a bit about how one of the things he was thinking of when creating this show was the ways that this experience paralleled being a minority in America and particularly, racism in America. Sometimes people react negatively to the bears and it’s just those people’s thing, not the bears, though it is particularly distressing to Grizz.**
I mentioned before that I appreciate that whatever shenanigans the bears or a single bears cause or are involved in have appropriately calculated stakes and consequences–and not just in the sense that a cartoon meant for all ages should probably not have a lot of gruesome death in it. The person most responsible for shenanigating takes most of the damage and uninvolved people or innocent people caught up in it are not as subject to the shenanigans.*** And that’s a relief to me. It’s not a cartoon that relies on either the pleasure of someone finally getting what they deserve–one day that Roadrunner will get his/her due!–or on the shock of, say, Ren’s cruelty to Stimpy, Jerry’s cruelty to Tom the Cat or Woody Woodpecker’s flat-out sociopathy.
Sweet jean jacket.
When the bears dig a cool jean jacket with a tiger on the back out of a dumpster, they get a run of good luck. The luck is low level, but the bears are ecstatic. Ice Bear says, “This is the best thing to happen to Ice Bear” and they all agree.  Panda finds money in the pocket. Grizz gets three high fives in a row. Ice Bear finds coupons for salsa dancing lessons.
The rain stops. Streetlights go their way. Pizza bagels are on sale. A cash opens up at the grocery store and they are first in line. But when the jacket’s curse is revealed, it operates on the same level. They each want the jacket for themselves and end up fighting. Joss Whedon’s We Bare Bears would straight up have killed one of them, but instead Panda accidentally punches his own face.
They realize, ‘We’re not wearing this jacket. This jacket is wearing us. We have to get rid of it.” The temptations the jacket uses to try to get them to take it back are things like pizza mistakenly delivered to their house. All of which are stakes and consequences appropriate to the situation. We Bare Bears is about critters and people mostly trying their best and screwing up sometimes. It is a pretty gentle cartoon, though there are both shenanigans and hijinx. It seems to me that in its own way going the chill and gentle route can be more avant-garde than another manic cartoon.
*I see a little Tokyo Drifter in the part where Ice Bear is silhouetted in red, too.
**There is a thing here where I talk a bit about the Prime Directive and the ways that it is kind of butts, but we have bears to discuss.
***This is a more complicated calculation when Panda goes bad in “Braces.”

Carol Borden isn’t going to lie. She kind of covets that jean jacket.
Ice Bear is Best Bear At first it was the way the bears were stacked atop each other that appealed to me.
