Unfairly Maligned Games, Vol. 3
Games I loved that got low scores, review bombed, or have some other weird negative stigma attached to them that I think is unfairly earned.
NOTE: I don't believe in giving games a number score or a letter grade. Maybe I'm just bad at criticism or very easy to please, whatever.
Tumblr media
Indivisible [2019]
Mostly only known as the "from the makers of Skullgirls" game, Indivisible is another prime example of a game that was crowdfunded as one thing but turned into another, and gets a bad rap for its association with the ever-present controversiality of Skullgirls' creators. That said, I still think - as always - that it's crucial to view a game for what it is, not what it isn't. And what it IS is an extremely engaging mish-mash of genres and endearing characters, oozing with style and appeal, that fills a very particular void left behind by some of the most classic RPGs of a bygone era.
Tumblr media
At its core, Indivisible is a 2D Metroidvania/RPG hybrid with an unusual battle system that plays similarly to an old PSX game series called Valkyrie Profile. During combat, each character's gauge will fill up, allowing them to take action(s). Your four party members are each assigned to one of the four face buttons on a controller (e.g. A, B, X, Y), and pressing that button will - in real-time - execute an attack on the enemy. Using it in combination the D-Pad allows for several different types of attack. All party members' attacks can overlap simultaneously, allowing you to string together combos to really rack up the damage, or juggle enemies to prevent counterattacks and break their defenses. The Metroidvania and platforming portion comprises the rest of the game, with a heavy focus on using those same action skills to scale massive environments, solve platforming puzzles, and dodge spikes. Typical Metroidvania stuff.
Tumblr media
Story-wise, in our modern world of RPGs that is dominated almost exclusively by Japanese and Scandinavian narratives, Indivisible is breath of fresh air that focuses heavily on South and East Asian mythology and themes. Heavy inspiration is taken from the cultures of India, Tibet, Mongolia, and the South Pacific. This is reflected not only in the characters and their various ethnicities, but in the game's approach to spirituality, reincarnation, second chances, and being a teenager hellbent on destroying god. Our main protagonist Ajna is a teenager studying martial arts who isn't quite as in touch with her spirituality as her mentor would like her to be. When war strikes the land and burns her home to the ground, she gets pissed and sets out on a quest for retribution, discovering in the process that she actually does possess certain godlike powers of destruction, and also that she can absorb certain people into her head, which is just a cute way of lampshading having a Party System.
Tumblr media
I've seen Reviewers and big Opinion-Havers on the internet criticize the game's writing for having a bull-headed protagonist who boldly rushes into confrontation, unleashing her wanton destruction without first considering the catastrophic consequences for civilians. It's almost like they've forgotten what being a teenager and making poor choices is like. But I say fuck 'em. I say we need MORE stories about uninformed teenagers with immense godlike powers and no sense of nuance making rash decisions and fucking up royally. That alone is crucial to understanding the rest of the game's themes about atonement, reincarnation, and understanding why you believe what you believe in. That's what Indivisible is all about. In many ways, I feel like Ajna shares a common story arc with Korra from the Avatar series, and it's very cool to see how she learns to deal with the damage she's caused and what insight that gives her when facing down the Big Bad.
Tumblr media
Of course, what is a good story without characters to flesh it out? The characters in this game are absolutely charming and multifaceted, coming from a wide array of different cultures and personalities, many of which are vastly underrepresented in not only RPGs but video games in general. Personal favorites include, but are not limited to, big booba water mom Thorani (based on a buddhist deity of the same name), Leilani the Hawaiian sharknado (spins around in a cyclone attack using a leiomano, a Hawaiian shark-tooth sword), lesbian pirate mom Baozhai (based on the famous Chinese pirate Ching Shih), and of course, local nihilistic swamp witch Razmi (a loose mishmash of Korean and Persian Zoroastrian shamans). The full cast of characters is enormous (well over 20 playable ones alone), and each one comes with a unique moveset and playstyle that not only keeps gameplay interesting, but matches their personality and the role they play in the story.
Tumblr media
But if there's one thing I truly want to focus on when I gush about this game, it's this. Indivisible has one thing over most other games of its genre, something that modern RPGs in particular suffer heavily from a severe lack of, and that's its strong commitment to multiculturalism. Indivisible made a clear decision to not only feature characters from around the globe, but to blend their cultures together in interesting and exciting ways that don't diminish or water them down. Every character is allowed to shine in their own way without diluting what makes them stand out in the first place, which is why you can have a game that features a gunblade-wielding cowboy, a Namibian songstress, an armless Chinese dancer, a Kamen Rider knock-off, and a Mongolian archer who people keep mistaking for Pearl from Steven Universe. This sort of melting-pot cultural stew used to be common in classic anime and 90s RPGs, but kind of fell out of fashion with the rise of gacha waifu games and Elder Scrolls derivatives. Now more than ever, I feel like Indivisible is exactly the sort of injection the gaming world needs to rekindle those flames of pure imagination that the old classic era brought us.
Tumblr media
All that said, one of the biggest reasons Indivisible will always have a dark mark next to its name is of course due to the fact that its lead designer (the studio head) was involved in a sexual harassment case that resulted in everyone on the team either quitting or being laid off, and the rights to the work and characters getting lost in the shuffle. Additionally, the game was still finished and released as intended, but did not feature any of the guest star characters that were promised during crowdfunding, most of whom were indie darlings of the time (Shovel Knight, Hyper Light Drifter, and Super Time Force to name a few). Naturally, this has left a sour taste in many folks' mouths, so it is somewhat understandable why the game would have a negative stigma attached. There are also a few bizarre and possibly off-putting cameos hidden among the NPCs (a few outdated meme references and Zone-tan, of all people), but these are entirely skippable and serve only as background extras.
Tumblr media
Sour grapes aside though, I wholeheartedly recommend Indivisible for anyone looking for a fresh take on action RPGs. The neat hybridization of Metroidvania and real-time RPG with fighting game mechanics gives it a very unique identity, and if the compelling spirituality of the story doesn't grab you, the charm of the characters absolutely will. It certainly took me for a ride. My only word of caution is to follow the game's own suggestion and get good at Blocking in combat as early as you can!

Thanks for the tag @crepuscularqueens! This was a whole lot of fun (I might love talking about writing- but reading is so much more fun to discuss)
Rules: generate ten tags (here) and rate them according to how likely you are to read them
-10 -> very dissuaded
0 - don’t care either way
+10 -> very enticed
nope -> if it’s a hard no and you’d never click on a fic with that tag or or you even have the tag blocked or you’d insta click out of the fic if it wasn’t tagged
1) Vaginal Sex: +10, if I’m looking at something with explicit sexual content there’s nothin not to like about this particular tag, though ngl it tells me almost nothing about the content itself
2) Robots: -8, unless robots are like super crucial imma not walk through the door- cause they’re just not my thing
3) Overstimulation: +10, it’s sexy and that’s all
4) Banishment: +5, as long as it’s got a happy ending for the character(s). Cause thematically it’s so much fun- like where do they go when they’re removed from home? Who do they go to? Who do they become untethered by duty and loyalty and obligation???
5) Bittersweet Ending: -10, my friends would have to have wrote it, I’m a hardcore happy ending girlie
6) Royalty: 0, depends on the story focus/set-up
7) Pegging: +5, soooo this is difficult cause sexy wise it’s very high, except if it’s m/f there’s a good chance some sort of misogyny or misandry at play
8) Exhaustion: 0, idk truly, my brain would just skip over it probably
9) (Character) is an Idiot: +10, so long as said character fits that within canon, like truly this describes one part of my of my ships
10) Implied/Referenced Child Abuse: 0, okay, so I’m very very particular and sensitive about this topic, and fan fic is so bad about it tbh, everyone was beat by their dad and emotionally tortured when it comes to fanon and even more so if they actually suffered abuse in canon. So I’m kinda weary about anything tagged as such even though I find it an important conversation to be broached by fiction. All in all it depends on the amount of nuance by the writer, if they even subconsciously try to apply levels to abuse and attempt to create apologies and excuses for anything not physical, the writers overall understanding of the affects of said abuse on the psyche and that it’s not just 🥺 “I have trust/daddy issues, fix me” 🥺 because time in and time out that is the narrative, that abuse doesn’t wire a child’s brain- that they’ll just get fucked perfect by some guy™️ and their trauma responses (which they’ve usually depicted as evil and gross) will just melt away, and then there’s the whole ptsd cropping up during bdsm but that really like makes me want claw my eyes out (sorry- I have FEELINGS about this subject as it pertains to fanfic/fandom)
No pressure tags @shipperqueen6 @13shadesofanni @ajna-eye-cogitations and anyone who wants to!!!

It was Christmas Season 2018, Yule time if you prefer, when I was browsing for books online one evening & I stumbled upon a title known as “The Pillars of Tubal Cain”. I was not entirely sure what to expect from the book, I ordered it on a whim, and shortly after its arrival my life would be changed forever. To shortly summarize the Pillars of Tubal Cain is a book written by Michael Howard and Nigel Jackson. To my knowledge the book is a collection of articles from Michael Howard’s “The Cauldron” magazine and website that provided a series of articles regarding traditional witchcraft running from the 1970’s until Michael Howard’s passing in 2015. The book covers many topics such as the roots of Angelic Magick, Yezidism and the Peacock Angel, Esoteric Taromancy, the Knights Templar, Solomons Temple, the Fallen Angels etc.
I post this blog to give credit to Michael Howard for providing a gateway for me into Sabbatic Craft which later on sparked my deeper interest into Arabic sorcery and their potential relationship. Michael Howard’s work sparked me greatly, I began to research everything about him, as knowing the author can sometimes teach you more than the books themselves. I started by purchasing associated titles involving Michael Howard, one of which was “The Luminous Stone” edited by him partially. It was when I opened this book that I realized Michael Howard had died in 2015. I felt this strange coldness in my chest when I read this, knowing I would never be able to speak to this man. It was then when I was lead to the work of Andrew Chumbley and the Cultus Sabbati, as for me this seemed an accessible root into Howards influences. Michael Howard had been initiated into the Sabbatic Cultus in 1999. It was not until I read Eikostos, the Xoanon Bibliography that I learned that Michael Howard was credited for "facilitating the placement of our grimoires in the hands of worthy owners." This quote is from Daniel A. Schulke, found in the forward of Eikostos.
About a few months after my reading of Pillars that I had acquired a copy of the Azoetia by Andrew Chumbley, following my digestion of Michael Howards work. At this time, I am trying to narrow down exactly how much is respectable to say of my work with this grimoire, one thing I will say is it birthed the coven and its structure which I currently oversee. The Pillars of Tubal Cain spoke of the legend of the battle in heaven between the Arch angel Michael/Mik’hail and the fallen angel Lucifer. It was said in the battle of heaven that the arch angel struck Lucifer’s brow, which lead an emerald to fall to the earth. This emerald would be proposed to be many things, or a part of many things, such as the Emerald Tablets of Thoth, and the “emerald table” of King Arthur. It was theorized this strike towards Lucifer’s brow created what is known as the Mark of Qayin, synonymous with the Third Eye, or Ajna Chakra in many witchcraft traditions around Britain especially.
So, what is the Emerald Scar? The exact same thing to me. If the emerald falls to earth from Lucifer’s brow, it creates an Emerald Scar. This legend and Michael’s work along with practice of the Azoetic arcana led me to form a small circle that would “embody the entirety of witch blood “. The concept of Via Nocturna propounded by Nigel Jackson referenced by Andrew Chumbley in Opuscula Magica Vol. 1 stuck with me greatly the more I learned about it.
It is termed as "the invisible conclave of initiates conjoined through parity of experience within trance-ecstasis, Its wisdom is accessible to those whom have passed through the transliminal gateways of this world and whom have undertaken the initiatory night-journey to the oneiric realms of the Sabbatic revelry." Within the Sabbatic conclaves of the Greater Dream, the dream beyond the dream, I glimpsed through the Emerald Jewel a series of phantasmagoric visions which lead me to believe that an initiatory path via the Golden Chain had opened for me. I want to add that the Golden Chain of initiation isn’t even a concept coined entirely by Andrew, it is very much related to the Naqshbandi Sufi order as a way of initiation via lineage. This Golden Chain is discussed as a concept in Pillars early on. I believe Andrew Chumbley understood this concept to a deep degree, considering his vast crediting towards Sufic orders in his 1995 work, Qutub. Qutub especially had an impact on my desire to find missing links between Arabic Magic and Sabbatic Craft, especially due to Chumbley's reference of many terms used in Sabbatic tradition which are directly linked to Arabic Etymology and practice, as well his reference of the Sufic sect of the Mullamatiyah, the Jhakri of Nepal, the Yezidi of Kurdistan, the Dhu'l-qarneni of medieval Morocco. Over time I had begun to form my own view of the cosmos based mostly (at least at first) on the work of the Cultus Sabbati and associates.
With the launch of the Emerald Scar website, we find it fitting to give credit to those who helped spark our inception. We have no direct affiliation with the Cultus Sabbati whatsoever, their works however were a major focal point for us.
I personally also had the pleasure of visiting Essex, Andrew’s home county in England for the Nameless Arte Conference in 2019. There I was able to meet A.D Mercer author of Liber Coronzom & Runen Wisdom of the Runes, Gemma Gary Co-owner of Troy Books & author of Traditional Witchcraft: A Cornish Book of Ways, The Devils’s Dozen, & the Charmers Psalter, last but not least Martin Duffy author of Effigy, The Devils Raiments, and the newly published Anathema Maranatha. Meeting these authors and associates of Three Hands Press provided me with a lot of inspiration to continue the workings that I was undergoing at that time. It’s been 3 years now since I first got into the works of Cultus Sabbati and its associates and I still continue this work within my chosen "Cells" of Magical Arcana. I would also like to thank James Hunter-Ralston for being a dynamic figure in my journey and helping me to meet many of authors who inspired me. Throughout the "unfoldment" of the work more credit to inspirations will be given and more exposition shall be offered into the arcanum of the Emerald Scar. We look forward to those who wish to join us at the Emerald Flame of the High Witch Sabbat. (This blog is from our website www.emeraldscar.com , if we caught your attention please consider supporting the website.)

Chakra Meditation
Keeping your chakras in balance is the key to overall well-being. Chakras are spiritual energy centers within our body that regulate emotions and physical health. By learning how to meditate on your chakras, you will be able to rebalance and restore balance within your body.
Root Chakra
Performing root chakra meditation can help you connect with the grounding power that is inside of you. It can also counter the external triggers that can disrupt your chakras.
First, find a quiet spot. Sit on a cushion or on a mat. You can also sit on your knees. You can also place your hands on your knees with your palms facing up.
You can also place a healing image of a lotus in the bowl of your pelvis. This will help you to release negative emotions that you have stored in the root chakra.
Next, close your eyes. You should feel a warm, red glow. The sensation of a red glow can last a few minutes. Then, slowly open your eyes. You may want to write down some positive affirmations about your chakra.
You can also perform root chakra meditation with your hands on your lap. Then, take two deep breaths. You should feel a red glow at the base of your spine.
Sacral Chakra
Taking care of your sacral chakra is a must if you want to be in top form. It's the place where you get the energy to perform creative activities and source energy for relationships. So it's a good idea to meditate on it. Having a healthy sacral chakra can open up your sexuality and your ability to express your desires and wants in a relationship.
A healthy sacral chakra can increase your morale and improve your ability to handle failure. It can also increase your resilience in life and help you to become a better lover.
One way to meditate on the sacral chakra is to do the bija mantra. This is a mantra that opens the sacral chakra and stimulates it. It's best to meditate on the sacral chakra in the morning to optimize the effect.
You can meditate on the sacral chakra by performing a few yoga poses. You can also do some stretches and wiggle your toes. You can also focus on your breathing.
Ajna chakra
Whether you have just begun your journey into meditation or you've been meditating for some time, learning how to meditate on the Ajna chakra can help you enhance your concentration and amplify your awareness. This chakra is a gateway to the higher realms of consciousness and a place of transcendence. It's a key gateway to spiritual enlightenment, which can help you find more ease in your life.
The Ajna chakra is one of the seven chakras found in the Hindu tradition. It is located in the center of the forehead between the eyebrows. Ajna is pronounced "Agya" in Sanskrit. It is associated with the senses of sight, intuition, and insight.
When your Ajna chakra is out of balance, it can cause you to feel closed-minded and unable to focus. It can also cause neurological problems. This chakra is also associated with out-of-body experiences.
If you've been experiencing headaches, you may have an imbalance in your Ajna chakra. Meditation can help restore this chakra to a healthy state.
Balance your chakras
Practicing meditation is one of the best ways to balance your chakras. It is also a great way to reduce stress. Meditation increases your awareness, enabling you to deal better with anxiety and mental or physical pain.
Meditation can also help you balance your chakras by bringing your focus to the present. This will help reduce anxiety and stress and allow you to relax and enjoy a more peaceful and restful sleep.
Meditation is also a great way to unblock your chakras. By focusing on your breath, you can release negative feelings and bring your body back into balance.
You may also want to try yoga to unblock your chakras. Yoga is a form of meditation that incorporates intentional breathing, postures, and energetic movements. Each pose affects your body and mind in different ways.
The seven main chakras are located throughout your body. These chakras control different physical, emotional, and spiritual functions. When your chakras are out of balance, they can cause depression and anxiety.

Trope Rating Game
Rules: how much do these tropes affect your decision to click on a fic?
-10 -> very dissuaded
0 - don’t care either way
+10 -> very enticed
nope -> if it’s a hard no and you’d never click on a fic with that tag or you even have the tag blocked or you’d insta click out of the fic if it wasn’t tagged.
Bonus points for explaining the rating and whether it’s conditional.
I was tagged by the lovely @mewwinx96 <3
Age gap: 5
Look… as long as the author isn’t making an age gap that actually doesn’t exist in canon (cause ewww no) it’s a really fun multi layered social construct for the ship to have to get through
Codependency: -5
If it doesn’t exist in canon it’s just me with floating question marks… and like more often than not it’s tagged for characters who just aren’t acting like themselves
Obsession/Possessiveness, jealousy: nope
I’ll make exceptions for rare pairs and authors
Opposites (grumpy/sunshine etc): -8
Usually when tagged it’s cause they characters are being over simplified or they’re being smushed into a trope they don’t actually fit in
Enemies to lovers, Enemies with benefits: 10
I mean- it fits so many of my ships so so well
Friends with benefits: 10
I’m a sucker for these tbh (even ships I don’t like will make me click open a fic)
Sex to feelings: 5
Depends on execution and other tags, could be a lot of fun (this is also sadly how I wrote a lot of the time)
Fake dating/relationship: 10
Favorite trope (cause I’m predictable)
Friends to lovers: 3
Depends on other tags and the ship, it’s a great concept but doesn’t fit all characters and scenarios imo
Found Family: -10
I don’t like being told how to view relationships and dynamics… also, usually when this is tagged it’s a fic primarily about (insert fan fav)’s trauma and an unrealistic portrayal of them being cured by someone their age fulfilling the nuclear family roles in their life…
Hurt/Comfort: 0
No preference either way
Love Triangle: nope
Canon gives me enough of this nonsense
Poly, open relationships: 0
I mean… if I’m in a poly ships tag I expect it… if not then I don’t really mind either way
Mistaken/hidden identity: 5
Depending on ship, but I won’t lie as someone who has read batflash fic it can be a pretty good trope
Monsterfucking: 0
I mean I’ll skip if I get uncomfortable- but you don’t watch TVD and come out thinking the blood sharing scene is the epitome of sexy and stay super squeamish (though I won’t lie I just steer clear of actual monster fucking)
Pregnancy: 0
I don’t mind it unless it’s the whole premise of the fic and there’s nothing else to draw me in
Second Chance: -5
Usually starts you in the middle of the drama so I don’t much care for it
Slowburn: 5
Depends on other tags, since people tag it a lot for things that don’t fully count
Soulmates: 5
