ramble ab ur favourite moment/s in 1998 (for the ask)

Jellicle Songs is the most energetic banger that gets me ready for the whole experience of watching Cats again. And then there's just...John Partridge being the hottest Tugger with the biggest rockstar vibes singling out Jemima (his favorite kitten) and gently silencing Etcetera's fangirl screams. Demeter and Bombalurina giving us this haunting duet about Grizabella. And then just...the way everyone's voices blend together so beautifully during Old Deuteronomy (and especially with Munkustrap and Tugger's duet bringing that perfect brotherly vibe) and Tugger bowing to his Papa in a way that makes it obvious to the audience that he respects him probably more than anyone else in the Junkyard. How excited everyone is to be able to see their leader again, the happiness in the kittens' eyes as they hug him and sing his praises. Everyone being dorks during the Pekes and Pollicles number. The way Platoria are just so in love. The Jellicle Ball, particularly the moment when Bomba interrupts the young Toms so that the Queens can dance, the way the Toms advance on the Queens, and the beautiful lifts (the Tuggerlurina lift gives me life!!!), how perfectly in-sync everyone is and the expressions of satisfaction and triumph when they nail certain moves (again, Veerle Jemima just makes me smile, she looks so happy to be here!). And then Jemima is singing again and I tear up and my heart hurts because I love her so much and she's just the sweetest, most compassionate, empathetic little thing ever. I can't forget the Macavity song and dance, which is probably my favorite sequence of the whole musical. The inherent sexuality of the song and dance, the realization that Demeter and Bombalurina have both been in relationships with Macavity, the way they play off each other, and just the fact that we get another moment for all the ladies in the cast to show off their moves and sing together. The way Munkustrap and Bombalurina defend Demeter and Jemima just warms my heart and validates all my headcanons for them, and the little Demestrap moment after Deuteronomy's capture is just perfect and lovely and everything I want out of Cats. And then we get Tugger and Misto being attatched at the hip, with Tugger singing Misto's praises and mimicking almost every move. How proud and emotional Tugger is when Mistoffelees brings Old Deuteronomy back (complete with Misto jumping in Old Deut's arms and giving him an affectionate lick). And then, of course, the whole of Memory. The moment when everything comes full-circle and the Jellicles forgive Grizabella. Jemima's song of encouragment (again with the crying and realizing just how compassionate and empathetic this little baby kitten is). The fact that in the moment, it doesn't really matter what she's done, just that she's forgiven. How honored and humbled and happy everyone is after they've touched her. The fact that she gets to go to the Heavyside Layer, and that now she can start life anew...to have a chance at living without a past that hangs around her like a dark cloud.

SO I SAW CATS CHORZÓW AGAIN AND I BRING MORE BITS!

[Part 1]

CHORZÓW SAID DEMELONZO RIGHTS BABEY!

They kept cuddling and playing during Gus's song among many others and he fought Mac and fell first and Deme kept clinging to him. He was always close and checking on her when Griz showed up, including during Memory.

Also!! During the last song Deme and Lonzy lost themselves in a cuddle session and then jerked back like "oh shit we're supposed to be doing something" sbsbdb.

It honestly made me hop on the Demelonzo train! Demestrap is nice but this Alonzo gave such soft boy vibes and I love it. If Munk is her rock, her anchor that keeps her grounded, Alonzo is a soft pillow that makes her comfortable and safe. I love both.

They gave us Bombastrap rights as well (I love that this production went "let's bring back ships that were once iconic but fell out of favor when the musical started getting streamlined into a universal version). They were clearly romantically affectionate, nearly getting frisky during Gus's song. She also tried to stop him during the Macavity fight (though he shood her away) and then came to check on him afterwards.

Alonzo actually also took a lot of "Quaxo" bits, like the part after Vic's solo and the "terrible bore" line - Misto was really mostly reduced to a background character until his song, save for the acts of overpowered magic. Lonzy gave off a major "leader understudy to Munk" vibe, and they're also totally besties.

A propos overpowered magic, MISTO ACTUALLY MAGICALLY TURNED GUS YOUNGER so that he can perform Pekes and Pollicles one last time (at Old Deut's request)

Another notable ship (besides the oldies which I've touched on before) is Tugger and Kocik le Miau - although he also flirted heavily with A LOT of cats (both male and female, even Alonzo fell victim to his advances shsbxbx although that was more to mess with him. I've noticed him flirting with Etcetera, her brother Brali Dalej - who may or may not be George - Cassandra, obviously Bomba, and he also got wayyyy too up close and personal with Munk to mess with him at one point). It appears that Kocik was his chosen groupie of the night rather than anything serious.

I find it kinda funny how one of the most homophobic countries to have staged Cats is one of the few that make Tugger explicitly bisexual. Not subtextually or thanks to improv, not "his relationship with Misto seems kinda fruity" - in fact, they don't seem romantically interested in each other at all in this one. But Tugger flirts with both queens and toms, even has a scene in "Old Deutoronomy" where he does a sensual "finger under lover's chin" move on a queen and then a tom all in one line of the song so you quite literally can't miss it, and it's WRITTEN INTO THE CHOREO

Misto and Electra had some moments, but not really romantic - they had a fight-duet when he stole her thunder during the ball, and he kinda patted the air near her butt at one point, and held her at the end of the pas de deux? So like, this may be kind of a one-sided playful thing for him

Oh and I dunno if I've mentioned this before but the "pas de deux" is really a pas de trois I guess sbdbdbx Vicki dances with Munk and Tugger, with them "stealing" her from each other! Nothing overtly sexual like the typical thing though.

I'd like to bring up @the-cat-at-the-theatre-door 's comment when I told her that:

because I did kinda get the feeling like her solo was about her discovering her third name. With all the cats huddled around a mirror, having hissed at it prior, perhaps not ready to face their true self yet, so the initiation makes sense!

Anyway it's old news but I really loved Pekes and Pollicles and Macavity - maybe even more than the classic versions. Definitely vocally.

Visually, Macavity is SO GOOD in the first part, the choreography between Deme and Bomba is just MWAH, representing the seductive yet abusive nature of Macavity's affection so well.

And Pekes and Pollicles... Maybe I wouldn't call it better than the '98 version because Gus playing Rumpus Cat eliminates a lot of the funny factor that stems from the cat playing Rumpus Cat being an absolute jackass, and the cats are really trying their best even if they mess up sometimes instead of not showing up at the rehearsal even once, but it's by far the best revival version imo.

During the ball, Jelly dances on the railing, she looks like a proud dance teacher who can't help but dance along to her pupils 😭 She also conducted the kitten choir during one song, Bustopher's I think. She has a flair for the theatrics after her dad 💜💜💜

During the reprise of Memory, Jemima kept glancing up, it looked like she was receiving instructions from the Moon/Everlasting Cat, leading her to then sing to Griz and prompt Demeter to forgive her. I love that despite how different that Demeter spin made the climax, it is still just as profound. The pure heart unblemished by hatred being able to reach understanding others couldn't comprehend for a long time vs the forgiveness of a scornful daughter

Also a small fun fact - since neither Jenny nor Jelly likely have the range, the high note goes to Jemima :)

I typically skip the last song because nothing really happens in it and it drags out, but here they had INTERACTIONS! And I loved it!

Sharing some of my OCs

Skadi (the mountain cat)

Breed: Norwegian Forest Cat

Three words: alert, skilful, friendly

Colours: Grey, white

How does she look like: Very big girl, long hair, very fluffy, very strong. In her Jellicle form she has VERY fluffy leg and arm warmers, a very fluffy and little bit chaotic wig, and a lot of shoulder fur. You have to tell she is a long haired cat. She also has gloves with nails, cause norwegian forest cats are known for having strong claws. And she is very tall, like Tugger/Munk/Alonzo tall.

Short story: She was brought to London by a rich couple, and she hates it in London because it’s too hot during the summer for her. During the summer she mostly stays in the air-conditioned apartment of her owners and meets the other Jellicles mostly during the winter. She spends like 5-7 years in London before her owners get a child and have to give her away because the child is allergic. Skadi moves to another family in Scotland. She really misses the other Jellicles but she is more happy with the weather there and she finds new friends in wild animals, dogs and other cats She also comes for visits during winter (with the train of course). When she is old she will return to London and have her own song about her life. She propably will get chosen as Jellice Choice.

Character: At first, she is very distant to the other Jellicles and spends her time watching them rather then interacting. At the beginning when somebody tries to nuzzle her, she pushes them away and hisses at them. But after a while she gets closer to them. Once she becomes more integrated into the tribe, she becomes very protective of the others, especially when she senses danger. She is also a great huntress but usually to lazy too hunt because her humans provide her with better quality food than some rats, pigeons or seagulls.

Where I see her as part of the play:

More of a dance character, mostly mute only joining some chorus parts. If the production has that short Macavity song in the first act she would join that.

She sometimes dances with the female groups and sometimes with the male groups. She would definitely join the Munkus-centre section at the ball and maybe the Tugger section too and would pick somebody up during the Bomba section (cause I say so). During the cuddle section (not read as orgy) she would try to cuddle with Tugger if he’s alone or maybe with Cassandra (or both).

She also wouldn’t hesitate to fight Macavity. Her first instinct would be to protect the ones who were hurt by Macavity, like Demeter, Alonzo or Mungojerrie. During Bustopher Jones I have a feeling she would stay with the boys rather than with the girls. Her fur is quite chaotic so Alonzo and Misto would propably try to straighten it so she looks nice for Bustopher but it’s already too late for that. Because she is quite white, she would play a (king) poodle during the Pekes and Pollicles. During Skimble she would mostly sit in the background and sing and then join the train with one of the big wheels.

She is a protector but a little bit more chaotic than Munkustrap, Skimbleshanks, Jennyanydots or Alonzo. She doesn’t mind the boys and girls misbehaving and even joins them sometimes or protects them if one of the adults scolds them. She also finds Tugger very entertaining and joins his number very early on the boys’ side. She would definitely imitate his shoulder shimmy with great joy somewhere in the background during the number. She is also part of the Macavity number as background dancer and she would try to attack him first but would be stunned by his magic. She only wakes up when Alonzo fights him and catches him before he falls to the ground.

During Gus, Misto and Grizabella she would be mostly a mere background character. Thou she falls in the category copy-cat she propably would immitate some of Misto’s moves in the background (especially the shoulder shimmy cause she likes that a lot).

Persephone

Demeter x Alonzo-kitten (look at the name, I’m very creative)

Three words: shy, lively, bright

Colours: White, black, golden

How does she look like: quite small, short hair, mostly white and black with some gold. In her Jellicle form she is small, has long gloves like her mum and of course a studded collar.

Next to Alonzo and Demeter she is coparented by Munkustrap and Cassandra.

Character: She is very playful, has a lot of compassion like her mum and sister, loves flowers (duh) and loves cuddling a lot, even if it’s too hot for the other cats or her humans.

Lucy

One of the seven kittens out of Misto’s hat (can’t decide on her other parent yet, maybe she really just came out of a hat).

Three words: mischievous, playful, clever

Colours: black, brown

How does she look like: small, short hair, mostly black with some brown in it, she has four ears. In her Jellicle form she is small, black arm and leg warmers, some brown on the belly and in the wig. Wig is special, because she has four ears.

Character: She is very mischievous, likes to play pranks and misbehave, but never in an evil way. She hates cleaning but her daddy is very neat, so she has to endure it all the time. She too has some magic.

Well, the more of it I see, the less I like the Broadway Revival...

#cats 2016 #unpopular opinion #maybe #i don't know #they made the pekes and the pollicles boring #and victoria doesn't approach grizabella in her first two appearances #which is sort of a plot point #and misto still doesn't get enough to do #the singing is good #everyone on stage can do their job fine #but the staging is kind of a mess #also #is it just me #or did the 2019 film use the revival choreography #that might be obvious #but it's starting to seem like some of the problems with 2019 started here #nothing is as bad as 2019 #so it's like 2019 took 2016's problems and made them worse

Cats sheet music

I've compiled some sheet music I've found for Cats the Musical, if you find any more please notify me! I'm looking for as many as I can find (and I'll add them into this post). Most of the sheet music I've found currently is piano, so instrument variations would be greatly appreciated!

Most of the sheet music is here, although it's only for piano and I don't think it has all the harmonies in the vocals.

The Jellicle Ball sheet music can be found here, although I'm honestly not sure what instrument(s) this is supposed to be for. I think it may be piano, but both staves are treble (discounting the vocals).

There are heaps of variations in sheet music arrangements for Memory, since that's the most iconic song in Cats. I think there should be a piano version in the first link.

Piano sheet music for Grizabella the Glamour Cat can be found here (the title is Rum Tum Tugger but the score is Grizabella).

All the orchestral parts can be found here (I think it's 16 piece - although it doesn't have the conductor's score).

Vocal score can be found here - it actually has all the harmonies! I was really excited to find this one! It was written for a 10 piece orchestra but I believe the vocals should work with other arrangements.

I) A popular opinion that you don’t agree with?

That Munkustrap will take Old Deut's spot as the Jellicle Leader. I'm on the side that Sillabub will take that spot once she is older

V) A problem you have with the show?

This only really applies to the Broadway Revival productions, but I do not like that Gus now sings most of the Pekes and the Pollicles. I understand and agree with cutting out Growltiger, and I understand wanting to give Gus an energetic song to sing right after Gus The Theater Cat. BUT, the song should have stayed a Munkustrap centered song. Gus can be the Rumpus Cat that's fine, but Pekes and Pollicles is the moment where Munk really shines and it's a bit upsetting that he gets overshadowed by Gus in it now.

B) Least favorite character?

This is hard because I don't really dislike anyone. I guess maybe Bustopher Jones cause he's the character I think about the least?

G) Favorite actor who’s been in the show?

I already answered my favorite who is John Partidge so I'll shout out my second favorite actor, Suzie Melloy!

She's my favorite Bombalurina, and while I'm sad we have no footage of her as Bomba outside curtain calls (at least as far as I know), the audio we have of her is fantastic and I love her voice so much. Also her Bombalurina is really hot, like she puts the s(ass) in Bomba.

K) Your favorite plot line?

But for real, I do love the concept of cats actually living nine lives, and that they get together once a year to decide who gets to be reborn. It's so absurd but fun idk it's a big draw for the musical for me.

So I was sitting and wanting to draw and color a new thing, and my mind went, “Know what would be fun? The Demestrap kittens from my fanfic Jellicles New (Which you can read here if you haven’t: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13714754/1/Jellicles-New ), but all grown up.” So, I did, albeit probably too dang quickly. xP But these are their basic colors and designs.

From left to right in order of birth: Whiskafyr, Grumbuskin, Cladandus, and Grizabella (2.0).

Some fun facts about each of them:

Whiskafyr: AKA Whiskey. Silver black mackerel tabby-and-white. Her human name is Persephone, given to her by the guardsman’s daughter (I don’t have solid names yet for the others x3). Talented in both song and dance, but especially LOVES acting and theater (You can be sure that Papa Munk taught her how to narrate The Pekes and the Pollicles xP).

Grumbuskin: AKA Buskie. Smoke-silver black. His talent is more in song than in dance, but he’s also got an extraordinary talent in playing string instruments, especially the violin; which may also be a mystical power he inherited, as his playing has soothing abilities.

Cladandus: AKA Dandy. Orange classic false tabby-and-white. His talent is more in dance than in song. Strong and skilled, he eventually trains to be a protector, which helps bring him out of his tendencies to be rowdy and a bit troublesome. x3

Grizabella: AKA Bella. Black tortoiseshell. Quite talented in both song and dance, and while she can be a little bit vain, she seems to have also inherited mystical powers of empathy, in that she can instantly sense someone in need of help, and will always do so.

This is gonna sound really weird, but do any of you have a time period you see cats as occurring in?

I was thinking about it, and I think there’s three possibilities.

1- The early 1980s

When the musical first premiered. Many of the props the characters use such as the shoes, cereal boxes and yogurts containers in ‘Pekes and Pollicles’ would suggest after WW2, when these types of packaging became popular, and the 80′s gives a nice tie in to the musical.

2- The 1930s

When the poems were written. The car in the the junkyards seems to be more reminiscent of vehicles from this era. The train the cats construct resembles a steam train, which wouldn’t be as common in the 80s.

3- The late Victorian period, or early Edwardian period

Admittedly, most of the set doesn’t fit with this, but it does work with some of the lines, such as the character mentioning Queen Victoria, who died in 1901, as if her reign was in living memory, and Gus claiming to having acting with Irving and Tree, in reference to two famous british actors, Henry Irving (died in 1905) and Herbert Beerbohm Tree (died in 1917). The train mentioned above also applies. As well certain clothing the cats wear is more reminiscent of this era, such as Bustopher Jones’ dapper suit, and Skimble’s train uniform.

Of course, it’s far more likely, that the production teams blend era on purpose, to more separate the characters from humans, but I think it’s fun to speculate.

I'm really interested in your Cats universe! It seems like you have them living like humans but humans also exist? Can you describe your universe a bit more, if you'd like to? :)

I must warn you though, this is a very in-depth universe, and even focusing on specific points and trying to simplify things as much as I could, I still managed to make to this about a mile long. Damn I wish Tumblr mobile let me do a read more cut

First of all, yes the Cats are anthropomorphic, and yes humans also exist in this universe. Anthro Dogs, Rats, and Mice all definitely also exist, and I'm considering a few other anthro races like Hyenas and maybe like Rabbits and some others, but haven't put too much thought to that yet.

Just for reference, if it's capitalized (Dog, Cat, etc) it's the anthro race, if it's lower case (dog, cat, etc) it's the fourlegger

Some Basic Terminology:

Non-human beings/non-human people - collective term for all anthro races

NHP - non-human person(s)

Furfolk - common English slang for non-human beings, not politically correct but still pretty widely used. There is also a version of this word for each specific race, Catfolk, Ratfolk, etc. (Note: Mice and Rats often are collectively refered to as Rodents or Rodentfolk)

Fourlegger - regular dogs, cats, etc. Used mostly by NHPs to differentiate between them and NHPs

Bald-bodies - humans. Used by NHPs, considered derogatory by most (nearly everyone uses it anyway)

Kit - kid, child, teenager (for Cats). Short for kitten

Tom - you know this one, an adult or teenage male Cat

Mot - an adult or teenage female Cat, an alternative word for "queen"

License Name - once called the "family name" back when it was still quite common for Cats to work for a human family in a residential household. Essentially this is the name that humans assign to Cats because Particular Names are often "too hard" for humans to remember/pronounce. It's their "official" name that appears on most legal documents, including their "license" which is essentially a registration card and number that all Cats are required to have. Most Cats have a license, and a license name, by age three, some get theirs as infants. Sometimes the parents have a say in what the license name will be, sometimes not. Sometimes a Cat will prefer their license name, some prefer their Particular Name, others don't care and will respond to either.

The Junkyard - a slum, mostly populated by Cats, on the outskirts of the metropolitan area of an unnamed imaginary British city, comprised partly of makeshift shelters scattered throughout an actual dump/landfill/junkyard, and partly of several large shantytowns built on the unused land surrounding the dump

Okay brief anatomy lesson before we begin

(For real though, please at least glance over that link before continuing, it is fairly brief and it makes what I'm about to try to explain a lot less complicated)

I've had to do some fantasy science to work out how Cats can have retractable claws without becoming less dextrous than humans (because I need them to be able to play instruments made for human hands). What I've essentially gone with so far is that Cats have extra bones in their hands/feet, which would make them unlike any other known tetrapod either living or in the fossil record, so the science side of me rebels at this, but the art side of me says it's a story about bipedal talking felines with mystical powers it's already science fiction they could have duckbills if I wanted them to (I don't), and so I think this is a decent compromise. I can go into further detail about the way the claws work later on if you like, but this post is already going to be pretty long so for now I'll just say that you can describe the claw as an extra joint attached to the end of the distal phalange.

Cats are super bendy, for the same reason that (fourlegger) cats are bendy. They have extra bones/joints in their spines. Cats have 7 cervical, 13 thoracic, 7 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 19-23 caudal. They have more sacral bones than fourleggers because they're bipedal.

Cats are habitual bipeds, like humans. But unlike humans, they are perfectly comfortable wandering around on their hands and knees. Though the bipedal stance is more comfortable and usually perfered by adults especially, most non-elderly Cats are still perfectly fine crawling on the ground on their hands and knees. You're generally more likely to see kits and young adults doing this, but older adults do it to. If they want to move fast or run, they use a bipedal stance. Beyond that it's just whatever feels right for the situation.

Some culture stuff

Cats and other NHPs (except Rats) don't need clothing to cover their privates. I'm not going to go into the anatomy of how that works. For now let's just imagine it's the fur that's hiding it. They do wear clothes, especially in winter, but it's not so much for modesty as it is for functionality and fashion. Basically clothes for Cats are for three purposes: to protect from the elements (cold, rain, sun, etc), to shut the outraged humans up, and to look good. It's pretty common in the summer to see Cats wearing nothing but some arm/leg warmers or other fashion accessory, and a belt/rope around their waist to store things on in the absence of pockets,(even if they also have a bag)

If you've ever owned or seen or been around a male rat you probably know why I say "except Rats" and I'm not going to get into it here, just know Rat men always where pants/trousers

Cats exist globally and have a variety of different cultures, often greatly influenced by the human culture of that region, but one of the most universal elements of Cat culture is the idea that "It's considerably dishonorable for a Cat to use anything but their own claws (and teeth in many cultures) in combat against another unarmed Cat." Translation: Cats generally frown on using weapons, though many recognize the need to know how to use them, because humans use weapons, and a claws against a machete or a cattle prod or a gun isn't fair. By the same line many modern Cats consider it okay to use weapons against a (dishonorable) Cat that pulled a weapon on you first, though many elders still frown upon this.

The relationship between Cats (and other NHPs) and humans isn't very good, and the relationship between different types of NHPs isn't much better. There's a social hierarchy that puts humans (especially white straight cis male humans) at the top. The hierarchy goes humans > Dogs > Cats > Rodents

About the Jellicles

The Jellicles are the name of a specific tribe that once was primarily a religious tribe. Back a really fuck long time ago when Deuteronomy was still a kitten, the Jellicles lived off the land and practiced their religion (still working out the details of that sorry but I do have a few things)

The Jellicle Choice is a real thing, though I haven't decided if it started with Deuteronomy or if he was the next in a line sorta kinda but not exactly like the Avatar. The Jellicle Ball is held every year and people used to come from all over hoping to be picked. The humans didn't like this mass gathering, and the space they had in their own territory couldn't quite handle it anyway, so the Jellicles had to start keeping the Ball's location a secret until the day of, to keep the attendance numbers down somewhat. A Choice isn't made every year, though there's always a chance one will be made, and they've had a dry spell for the past 20 or 30 or so years before Grizabella. They don't have to keep the locale a secret anymore, most people don't bother coming and some even think the Jellicle Choice is just a myth. Few people remember when the Jellicles were primarily religious

Deut was trained as a shaman from early childhood, and groomed to be the next leader since he was ten, but he's always been a performer at heart. At some point after taking over as lead, he met (a very very young) Gus and invited him into the tribe. With Gus's help he organized plays and small musical performances, slowly and gradually getting other members in on it as well, until putting on plays every now and then was just a part of Jellicle life. And it was a good thing too, because by this point the tribe had been forced to give up their land and had to move to an industrial slum in the nearest city. No longer able to live off the land, they turned to performance to make a living. This was all well before Skimble/Jenny/Jelly/Spara (Jr)/Griz were born. These days the Jellicles are known primarily as a tribe of performers. Every current member that was born into the tribe except Deut was brought up as a performer

The play we see is an actual play being put on by the Jellicles as a dramatization of the events of That One Particular Jellice Ball™ which happened three years prior to the current timeline.

I think that covers the basic rundown. You can also see this jumbled mess for my first attempt at explaining all this crap lol.

Oh yeah and before I forget, I haven't decided yet if "Peke" and especially "Pollicle" refer to a certain culture of Dog, a certain body type, or two specific gangs ("packs") that just happen to be mostly comprised of a certain culture and/or body type of Dog. But they do exist in this universe. At the very least they are fictional gangs made up for the Rumpus Cat comics (yeah he's a comic book hero in this), or else real gangs or cultures/types of Dog written into Munk's Rumpus Cat fanwork play.

There's also a very important event that I really need to go over at some point but it's a really heavy topic and this isn't the best time like politically to post it right now, or even for me emotionally to write it out. But I do need to get this out at some point...
