#s: the nanny (tv series)

Text
I'm probably going to sound deranged, but cut me some slack, it's 5am and I am being held in a chokehold by this thought and I need to inflict on others and sibling isn't awake because again, 5am, so now I must inflict this on unsuspecting Good Omens fans on tumblr dot com.
So we all know how Nanny Ashtoreth is Crowley's interpretation of how to be a nanny, with a demonic twist, and is based on Mary Poppins, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we all know that Crowley is, um, efficient with plants, I suppose, and while I do think it made sense for Crowley to be the nanny because imagining how Aziraphale might react if a young Warlock put sticky toddler hands on a book it's probably for the best.
But
And you have to hear me out here
What if...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What if Aziraphale, taking on the nanny position, decided to base the vibes on Nanny McPhee?
Technically timings work out for his interpretation of a nanny to be based on the movie since Warlock would have been born in 2008 and the movie came out in 2005, but I don't really think of Aziraphale as the type to watch tv shows/movies.
However, hope is not lost, as, when looking the movie up I found out it's based on a book series that came out in the 1960's-70's called Nurse Matilda.
Now I don't know like anything about the books, but from what I remember about the movie, Nanny McPhee does seem like a good model to base behaviour off of when trying to be the nanny to the (incorrectly assumed) Antichrist since her whole thing is teaching unruly children to behave with a little bit of magic thrown in there.
Anyway, I needed to inflict this on others so if you read all this, thank you, I'm going to bed now goodnight

Note
Let's talk more fashion: who are your top ten fictional characters with the best style 🥰
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right off the bat I have to go with Carrie Bradshaw. She annoyed me to no end for most of the series (apart from that one episode where she went to a house party and someone stole her shoes and she insisted that the guests pay her back for them) but I'd be lying if I said that her outfits don't continue to be iconic and they are always going to be a huge chapter of costume design and fashion. Patricia Field really is THAT woman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Rachel Green my forever girl has to be number 2. I love so many things about her style and how it evolves throughout the seasons. In the early days it was jeans, T-Shirts and overalls but in such a chic and 90's way and then as she starts working in fashion and growing more into a more grownup version of herself she has an amazing office wardrobe that I still take inspo from. I also love all her slip dresses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Meave Maisel. I started watching The Marvelous Mrs Maisel mainly because of the clothes and the fact that it was written by Amy Sherman Palladino and I stayed for as long as I did for the clothes as well. I believe the plot got a bit tired and the creators got distracted by the fact that the budget kept getting bigger so therefore they thought the show should be getting flashier instead of more human and funny but you'll never catch me complaining about the costumes because, well look at them!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Lisa Fremont. LISTEN. The costumes in this movie (which is Rear Window, directed by Alfred Hitchcock) are my Roman Empire. Especially the black and white dress combined with Grace Kelly's incredible beauty makes it one of the most iconic fashion moments in cinema history and we should give Edith Head (the costume designer) her flowers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Fran Fine. It took me a while to realize what an absolute fashion icon this woman is because I didn't watch The Nanny as a kid or teenager (I still haven't watched all of it and I plan on making it right eventually) but omg the absolute serve after serve after serve AFTER SERVE. Plus, that body is bodying. And a special mention to this particular outfit which is all of my dreams coming true:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Issa from Insecure
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This show's entire costume department deserved all the Emmys, Oscars, Tonys, just everything but Issa's style was always my absolute favorite because it was so versatile and reflected on her character journey as well. Plus I loved the fact that even when she had a casual look on, there were still so many smart details about it. Argh I miss Insecure so much I need Issa Rae back on my screen immediately.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Daisy Jones. This character has had a tight grip on my heart ever since I read the book and I knew I'd love her when I watched the tv adaptation but I didn't expect to love her to the point I spent all of last spring trying to find pieces to recreate her entire cool girl hippy wardrobe. And also I just have to mention this "gold dust woman" moment because it was arguably the most iconic outfit of them all
Tumblr media
8. Holly Golightly
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think I need to say too much about her to be honest do I? Audrey Hepburn is literally a work of art, in this movie and in general. My maybe somewhat unpopular opinion is that the pink outfit is my favorite one :')
Honourable mentions:
Monica Geller/ Blair Waldorf/ Cher Horowitz/ Zoe from Grownish (I hate the show though)/ Devi from Never Have I Ever/ Hilary Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Waiting
Doppo Kunikida!Father X Daughter!Reader
Word Count: 856
Requested: Anon
Request: hii !!! can u do father!kunikida x daughter!reader where reader is a highschool girl basically just waiting for kunikida to come home after school ?
Tumblr media
You sighed as you dropped your school bag on the floor by the door and kicked off your shoes, you knew that your father wasn’t home. He had told you at breakfast that he’d be working later today, he told you not to wait up for him but no matter what happened you always ended up trying. You loved your Dad and he had never put anything before you, even despite his job he made it to any performance or presentation, and all of his work friends looked out for you. Dazai often tried to get you into trouble but that being said if you were ever threatened then they became your protection, you were the youngest honorary member of the agency.
You don’t remember the day that you were given to your father, he had told you about it many times, he had told you the story many times, he’d never tried to hide the fat that you were left for him to find, your father had admitted that he had been with a few women but he didn’t know who your mother was, the note that was left with you when you were dropped off at the Armed Detective Agency gave him no clues, while there was a multitude of ways that he could find out, he never bothered, he couldn’t abandon you and he wasn’t going to so who your mother was wouldn’t matter unless you ever wanted to know.
That night you decided to start by making dinner, your father had made a point of teaching you everything that you needed to live alone, so that he didn’t have to worry about you while he was at work, he had hired Nannies for a good portion of your life but even you could tell that they were doing it because they thought your Dad was handsome, when you were old enough to understand it you started tease him about it, that was when he decided you were old enough to look after yourself. You started to cut up the vegetables and/or meat for your meal, humming a small tune to yourself as you made enough for your Dad to eat when he came home. While it was cooking you went and washed up putting your clothes in the washing machine to wash them before you went to bed. You sat down to eat and then finished your homework, washing everything that you had used to cook and eat, plating up your Dad’s for him later before sitting down to watch TV.
Kunikida closed the door with a heavy sigh, he rubbed his eyes pinching the bride of his nose and in that moment he heard the TV in the livingroom and kicked off his shoes to check on you, he could see you sitting up leaning enthusiastically into the show that you were watching “I thought I told you not to wait up.” He said, he smiled softly as he saw you jump out of your skin and then glance back to look at him. “I didn’t realise how late it was… It’s Friday so it doesn’t matter.” You shrugged as you looked back at the TV “oh there’s food in the kitchen, made you some.” “Thank you.” Kunikida said as he leaned down and pressed a kiss to the top of your head before walking into the kitchen, he caught sight of you finished work quickly checking over it as he heated up the food, nodding to himself as he looked through the answers. He walked back into the living room and sat next to you “what are you watching?” “(S/O/C), a new series started last week but I didn’t watch it.” You explained “is the food okay?” “Perfect.” He answered and you could tell that he meant it, as he continued to eat without complaint. “How was work?” You asked. “Same as always, Dazai being annoying.” Kunikida answered. “When is Uncle Dazai going to come around?” You asked “I wish you wouldn’t call him that.” Kunikida sighed “he gloats.” You giggled, you remembered that Dazai had been there for most of your life and he encouraged you mischievous behaviour when Kunikida would bring you to the office, you never went there these days though because trouble found the office more than they would like and everyone preferred that you stayed safe, so they came to see you instead, Dazai hadn’t be around awhile and you missed him. “I’ll let him know that you want to see him.” “Mm.” You hummed and you leaned back, your head rested on your Dad’s shoulder now that he was finished eating, it only took a couple of hours before you fell asleep, Kunikida turned the TV off and slowly moved to lift you and take you to your room, he gently laid you in bed and covered you over, he pressed a kiss to your forehead, he’ll never forget the day that he found you and fell in love with you, you had brought nothing but joy into his life and he’d be damned if someone took you away from him.

Gonna break the rule and go off anon 😉
What is your ranking for your favourite Chris Evans movies/TV shows????
Tumblr media
Niamh! do you know how hard this is.
Top ten-
Snowpiercer- Really is anyone surprised? I loved this film for how dirty, tragic, and beautiful it was, Curtis is my husband forever and ever. I love him.
Captain America Trilogy- Loved them all, especially The Winter Soldier. I have watched them so many times.
Puncture- God this movie was so tragic and Mike was such a mess but I still really enjoyed this movie and appreciated the issues this film covered.
Avengers Trilogy- comfort series for sure. I will never forget seeing Endgame in theaters, that scene still makes my heart race.
Defending Jacob- Loved Andy! So so much. Probably too much. It's not higher on the list because it's a tv show and tv shows are hard for me to watch cause it felt like such a long movie.
Gifted- Beautiful story and it always makes me tear up
Playing It Cool- This movie was messy but I loved it because of that. Even the storytelling was a mess.
Before We Go- Honestly simple and not exciting but it had some beautiful scenes in it and I was so proud of the work he did for this.
Knives Out- Ransom really was just a piece of the artwork of this film. Top Tier, I am so glad I got to see it in theaters.
Ghosted- Honestly, I thought this one was good, even for all the hate it got. Cole was a disaster and unreasonable at times, over dramatic, but I loved it. Also, I think he had better chemistry with Ana than some of his other female co-stars over the years.
Push- One of those films I saw right around the time it came out and I just liked it. If they just left out his love interest, it would have scored higher.
Losers- Just a fun movie! He should do more comedy.
The Red Sea Diving Resort- This film has so many mixed reviews but I did enjoy it beyond Chris being fucking beautiful in it.
The Gray Man- Fucking Lloyd man... I just loved that mustached prick more than I should have.
What's Your Number? This was a cute one and I absolutely adored him working with Anna. I wish they did more films together.
Fantastic Four 1 and 2- Johnny was a cutie and I had a little crush on him back in the day.
Streetkings- I have only seen this movie a couple times but always enjoyed the drama.
Sunshine- What a interesting Sci Fi. Only watched it once or twice, mostly in bits and pieces, and I find myself getting really frustrated every single time that no one just listened to James.
Lightyear- It was cute. It won't be one I watch regularly though, but cute.
Loss Of A Tear Drop Diamond- I wanted to throttle all of them, but I did love Jimmy in those suspenders and Chris trying his hardest at that accent.
The Nanny Diaries- Cute, but not really my kind of movie.
Cellular- HAHAHA I did love this back in the day, BUT rewatching it I forget that my standards for films has gotten higher and I do cringe. Especially with Jessica popping in, I just don't like her or Jason Statham all that much. William H Macy though... loved him. Lol.
TMNT- I loved this for him, but it wasn't MY TURTLES from the 80's and 90's, so yeah I was judgy.
Fierce People- everyone was just annoying in this movie. I kinda liked it, I kinda didn't. Depends on the day.
The Perfect Score- probably if I had watched this when it came out, I would have loved it. I only recently watched it a few years ago and had a very "just wait till you all start actual adulthood" frame of mind. Lol.
Not Another Teen Movie- My first ever introduction to Chris and I absolutely hated Jake although I admit I still laugh at his insulting jokes.
The Ice Man- So I will give Chris credit in his acting in this, I wouldn't have realized it was him except I mainly watched it to see his work in this. I can't say it was a great film, for me it felt slow. But I can see where others would like it for the true crime aspect of it.
Scott Pilgrim- His part was small but funny. I will never get over the eyebrows. Beyond that part, I didn't have an interest in the rest of the film.
Never Seen -
The Newcomer- no real interest.
London- Y'all really don't know the absolute dislike I have for Jessica Biel. She is the main reason I don't watch this film. Syd also sounds like an absolute prick and I would probably hate him with a passion. I know, I'm sure I am missing out on some great scenes, but... I just don't think I could listen to Jessica's character and Syd whine and carry on the whole movie.
The Battle for Terra- No real interest.
Or the few shows he was in as a kid.
So, how do we compare? I know you didn't ask for reasons, but I am in a writing slump and wanted to give something.

Note
Actually, now that I have thought it over, I think it would be better to add live action TV adaptations to possible candidates for the 40, but for characters from Live Action TV Shows.
I would include...
Jon Snow from Game of Thrones
Shawn Spencer from Psych
Michael Scott or Jim Halpert from The Office
Leslie Knope or Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec
Edmund Blackadder or Baldrick from Blackadder
Neil from The Young Ones
and Gilligan from Gilligan's Island
What live action TV Shows would you pick?
There were so many shows that it was so hard to pick! But I did my best:
The Addams Family (1964): Gomez or Mortica
BBC Sherlock: John Watson (I know there are some who don’t like this version, but I like the idea of John becoming even more badass and getting a leg up on Sherlock).
Good Omens: Aziraphale or Crowley
Merlin: Merlin of Arthur (I’m just imagining Arthur being surrounded by modern technology and calling it “sorcery!”)
House MD: House
Gilligan's Island: Gilligan
M*A*S*H: Hawkeye or Klinger (Look, the man KILLED IT in those dresses and was committed!)
Star Trek: The Original Series: Kirk or Spock
The Nanny: Fran or Niles
The Golden Girls: Rose or Dorothy or Sophia or Blanche (Listen, for so long I have wanted to see Niles from The Nanny and Sophia go toe to toe in an insult competition, so this is the closest I can get!)
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Will Smith
Knight Rider (1982): Michael Knight or KITT (Can you imagine three of the people waking up in a room only to find a talking car with them as well?)
Dexter: Dexter
Fringe: Olivia or Walter or Peter
Stranger Things: Steve Harrington (The babysitter needs to be prepare) or El
Doctor Who: Tenth Doctor
Supernatural: Sam or Dean or Castiel
The Good Doctor: Shaun Murphy
Breaking Bad: Walter White or Jesse Pinkman
The Handmaid's Tale: June Osborne
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy
Roswell (1999): Liz Parker or Max Evans
Fleabag: Fleabag
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Miriam Maisel
Orange Is The New Black: Piper Chapman
Psych: Shawn Spencer
The Office: Michael Scott or Jim Halpert
Parks and Rec: Leslie Knope or Ron Swanson
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Jake Peralta or Ray Holt
MacGyver (1985): Angus MacGyver
NCIS: Leroy Gibbs
Criminal Minds: Spencer Reid
The X-Files: Dana Scully or Fox Mulder
Full House: Jesse Katsopolis or Danny Tanner or Joey Gladstone
Corner Gas: Brent
Downton Abbey: Charles Carson
Monk: Adrien Monk
The Queen's Gambit: Beth Harmon
Columbo: Columbo
Murder, She Wrote: Jessica Beatrice Fletcher

Tag Game
Tag 9 people you want to get to know better. I was tagged by @mega-aulover Thanks girl!
Three ships:
Hayffie. Surprised? 😂 I’ve been a diehard fan of Haymitch Abernathy and Effie Trinket (”The Hunger Games”) since december 2012.
I was writing a sci-fi/dystopian novel at the time and was deep-diving through the genre when I happened to see the trailer in a movie theater. And here’s what’s spooky: I face claimed Jennifer Lawrence for my heroine and taped a picture of her in my notebook BEFORE Jen was cast as Katniss. 😱
Before Hayffie there was Huddy - Gregory House and Lisa Cuddy from ”House MD”. I first discovered FFnet because of them, years before I knew there was something called Tumblr.
And before that, way back when I was a teenager, it was Fox Mulder and Dana Scully from “The X Files”. My very first real obsession! Have like 20 TV recorded VHS tapes to prove it.
First ever ship:
It’s a tie between Nellie Oleson and Percival Dalton from “Little House on the Prairie” and C.C. Babcock and Niles the Butler from “The Nanny”. And you know a funny thing about that fandom: It’s pretty much universally agreed upon that Niles’s last name is Brightmore. It’s even more “canon” than the fan name Finn for Finnick and Annie’s son.
I don’t know why my ships are always so straight. First thinking about it I came up with no gay couples I’ve shipped other than Bert and Ernie from “Sesame Street” but then I remembered what a fangirl I was over Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson and Brittany S. Pierce and Santana Lopez from “Glee” and of course Dani Clayton and Jamie from “The Haunting of Bly Manor”!
And as for C.C. a.k.a. Lauren Lane, if she asked me to marry her I would say yes in a heartbeat even if it meant breaking up her and Niles. 😂 She’s a fierce sweetheart and hands down the most beautiful woman on the planet! Sorry Effie.
Last song: “Fever” with Peggy Lee. Rediscovered the song through the magnificent chess TV series “The Queen’s Gambit”.
Last movie: “Super Mario Bros” from 2023. Me and my younger sis was obsessed with the Mario and Donkey Kong games growing up! I always played Luigi by the way.
Currently reading: Just finished “Gwendy’s Button Box” by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar. The audiobook.
Currently watching: Manifest” on Netflix. It’s about time travel. I think. Too early to tell.
Currently consuming: An ice cream Sandwich.
Currently craving: I’m in a fried chicken period at the moment after discovering there’s a KFC ten minutes from my apartment. And that’s after living in Stockholm for over ten years!!
I’ll tag some near and dear Tumblr friends I admire and appreciate and some I admire and appreciate but am too shy to talk to. 😂

Hallmark made their annual holiday movie mega-announcement yesterday and while I prattled on (and on) about it over on Twitter, and have already updated the 2022 TV Holiday Premiere schedule accordingly still, somehow, there is more to note, so here’s a breakdown by category, based on what we know so far, of the 43 ‼️ (40 coming October-December, 3 already aired during “Christmas in July”) new Christmas movies Hallmark is bringing us in 2022…

ask game!! 5, what's your relationship status and why is it "married to user rassvetsky"??? hehe.
jokes aside, i'm very curious about your favorite pieces of media and such so i can be like "one of my favorite people liked this. they wouldn't like this for no reason." and consume them as well and bother you later with my thoughts on them. so!! 18, 36, 37, 94!! you don't have to answer all of them, or any of them— ilysm and i hope you have a wonderful week, love 💞
5. what’s your relationship status?
As seen above, I am virtually married to @rassvetsky 😌 who needs a reason for love!!! ILY VI 😂💗
Okay for the legit questions now (and omg I love this)
18. favorite tv show?
At the moment, 911 all thanks to @beachbabey and @nobody7102!! This show actually got me back in a groove of watching since I barely watched anything for the past two months. Am really starting to love situational shows like this and Grey’s Anatomy, and the characters (at least the ones I’ve met so far) are so wonderfully written. Also, they’re firemen 😌
Now, if the question is favorite TV show of all time…I will literally not be able to decide, so I’m going to list as many as I can (in no particular order):
This Is Us; Grey’s Anatomy (though I stopped watching after ***** ****, spoiler alert just in case anyone sees lol); Brooklyn Nine-Nine; The Good Place; Bodyguard; Peaky Blinders; On My Block; Agent Carter; Gilmore Girls; E!’s The Royals (major guilty pleasure); Outer Banks; Teen Wolf; Grace and Frankie; Maid…just to name a few 🫣
36. favorite movie?
If you thought the answer to my TV question was overwhelming, this one is just as or even worse 😂
Top Gun/:Maverick (obvi); Flipped; Cheaper by the Dozen (‘03); The Parent Trap (‘98); A Cinderella Story; Yours Mine and Ours; When the Game Stands Tall; The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants; Step Up (only until the 4th); Ready Player One; The Nanny Diaries; Love, Rosie; almost everything Disney/Pixar…I could go on
37. do you read a lot? whats your favorite book?
I haven’t read anything recently, but I love The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd! Literally so exciting with a fun and pretty unique concept. Another one that’s pretty personal to me is The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Extremely relatable. In terms of series, the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy is a fave! And special mention to Windfall by Jennifer E. Smith.
94. favorite lyrics right now
(Can’t name specific lyrics so songs it is!) Since I’m on my k-pop mode, I cry at the lyrics of All My Love by SEVENTEEN every time I listen to it 😭 and also love anything Reese Lansangan, NIKI, and Lizzy McAlpine!!!
Omg sorry if these were so long, but literally if you want any media recommendations, feel free to message, my love! I have a full list of almost every single movie and TV show I’ve ever watched and I’d love to talk about these with you 💗

I was a shy girl who was afraid when anyone even raised their voice to her. I immediately became hysterical. Someone always lived with us; my parents rented out a room so that we could have money. I also clearly remember going with my mother to her temporary job. She then worked as a nanny and cook in a rich house and took care of other people’s children, and my brother, who was 4 years older and at 7-9 years old could only feed me a burnt egg. Therefore, the days when she took me with her were amazing, because they fed me (with leftover food), I could watch cartoons, although in a foreign language to me.
When I was 5 years old, another brother was born, and there were three of us in the family. I dreamed of a brother because I knew that he would protect me and I was happy about that. By the way, it’s funny that they told me about his birth when I was watching the series on TV and I didn’t care at all, the main thing was not to miss the episode. Back then I was already addicted to TV series. My joy over his birth faded a couple of days after he was brought home. He didn't really scream, at least I don't remember that. Didn't interfere with sleep. He took all the love from our parents. They didn't care about me. Then I stopped eating and started raising my body temperature, pretending to be sick. As soon as my parents paid attention to me and hugged me, my temperature immediately dropped and I felt better. But I didn't eat. I'd fall asleep at the table if I couldn't separate my food into fibers. And then dad came up with a game so that I would at least drink milk, we would run to the refrigerator in the evening, take a carton of milk and drink it in a race. Summer came, I spent it with my grandparents. They lived in a private house, sharing it with their son's family and a tenant. Almost immediately, my cousin and I got bored and started pestering the tenant. He had an office in his garage and we would go in there to see what he was doing there. He had a production of pirated discs. Our curiosity led us to the fact that he taught us how to create such disks and we got a job with him. He paid us about $0.50 a day, but we were happy that we made the game discs ourselves! At the beginning of the day, my cousin was given a list of how many and what kind of discs needed to be made. We turned on the radio and started creating. Who knew this was illegal? One summer day my parents and brothers came to visit us. That day, my brother #1, me and four of my cousins started going crazy all over the neighborhood. Our adventures took us to a construction site, which we climbed onto. The guys were all 2-7 years older than me and treated me not like a fragile sister, but rather like a burden. We ran on the walls of the first floor (owner only managed to bild half the floor) and reached the place where, obviously, the front door should have been, because the abyss was deep and far away. All the guys calmly jumped up and started shouting to me: “S, we won’t wait for you! Stay here! And we will run home, tell your parents that you are jumping around the construction site, and they will scold you!". I cried because I understood that I didn’t have enough strength to fly to the other end, but I couldn’t go down either, there were some construction rods below, and it was high, but the guys really abandoned me. I stepped back and, trying to speed up, jumped up, imagining myself as the Spirit from the cartoon (Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron). Unfortunately, I didn’t succeed as well as he did, and, hitting my chest hard, I caught on the bricks on the other side. I pulled herself up, stood up and, in tears, tried to catch up with the guys. In August they took me home. At that time, I had been dreaming about a skateboard for more than a year and told my parents how much I wanted it and how glad I would be if they bought it for me. They didn’t buy it for me, we didn't have money, my dad made it himself, but it didn’t look like a skateboard. If you're interested, I can make it look like in 3dsmax, but for now I'll describe it. A piece of wood (maybe oak), 2 long pieces of wood were screwed to it, on which there were wheels. My dad gave me this dadboard and I was glad he let me try it out on the street. I hugged him, ran outside, laid him on the ground, sat on dadboard and drove off.
We lived on a hill, so I drove down the sidewalk. But as soon as I realized that I was approaching a busy intersection with traffic lights, I realized that it was time to brake. I’ve already picked up speed, there are no brakes on the dadboard, I can’t lean back like on a skateboard, because the wheels are screwed too close to the end of the board. I couldn’t think of anything better than to brake first with my toes, fortunately I was wearing sneakers, but quickly enough I wore them down to my toes, at which point I connected my palms, knees and elbows. I managed to slow down, I walked home along the hill and still walked up to the 4th floor. Where brother #1 and dad met me. They examined me, sat me on a chair and began to treat my wounds with everything that was at home, even what was not allowed to go into the wounds. I screamed furiously in pain as long as I had the strength, and they tried to shut up and told me to be quiet, because my mother and brother #2 were visiting the neighbors and they didn’t want her to hear. Need I say that it was a miracle that I didn’t get hit by a car then?

Marlon Brando's scene in Roots: The Next Generations is s sign of how society and the media have changed.
I'm not going to embed the scene, I'll just give you a link to it. Fair warning - it's harsh.
And yet almost everything Brando's character says in 1972 (it's a flashback) is being said today, by way more people that should be.
This was broadcast on ABC television in 1979. It was not bleeped, it was not edited. It used language that we do not even allude to today. Both he and James Earl Jones and Marlon Brando drop the N-bomb, numerous times, on network television. The word is used liberally (an ironic use of the word here) throughout both mini-series. I don't think they'd be able to show this on TV today, so completely different is the modern world's treatment of the word. It'd be cut up worse that The Sopranos on PAX-TV.
The person Brando played is in no way played as a positive. His callous, heartless tone in the hate he casually discusses got Brando an Emmy. And James Earl Jones is staggering - he's doing all he can to keep himself in check, and not only because this Nazi has a pistol on the desk in front of him.
Oh, and I am now going to refer to the former president's rallies and "Hate-nannies".

The Many Mystery Tours of Winnie the Pooh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What do a Disney animated movie about a stuffed bear and a Beatles album have in common?
In some articles I wrote back in my WordPress days concerning the Disney "Animated Classics Canon", I talked about how The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - released theatrically on March 11, 1977, was more of a clipshow than it was a fully-fledged Disney animated feature.
Now, the bonus features on various home media releases of this 1977 compilation film have often insisted the opposite. Disney seems to want your average consumer and us semi-historians to know that the story goes: Walt Disney was unsure about American audiences' familiarity with A. A. Milne's bedtime stories and the stuffed animal characters within. Instead of making a feature film as planned during the early 1960s, Walt planned to make three separate shorts to get audiences acquainted with those characters... and then string those three cartoon featurettes together into a 70-or-so-minute movie later down the line...
This seems to be a well-backed up history, too. After all, the autobiography of brothers Robert and Richard Sherman, known for their many contributions to the Disney songbook including the songs for these classic Winnie the Pooh adaptations, states pretty much the exact same thing. This strategy was not dissimilar to the studio's piecing-together of the Davy Crockett episodes of Disney's anthology series (then known as Disneyland, in promoting the upcoming theme park of the same name), which spawned the 1955 theatrical release Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier and its 1956 follow-up Davy Crockett and the River Pirates... But I feel this is untrue, and has been shown to be so...
Familiarity with British characters was never a problem for Walt and his crew before, or characters from European stories in general. Mary Poppins didn't need a couple of shorts, or some episodes of a TV show to familiarize audiences with the titular nanny beforehand. One Hundred and One Dalmatians was, from start to finish, a feature film project that never detoured into short films prior to release. Peter Pan? Same thing.
Now, the Sherman Brothers autobiography states that the poor reception of Alice in Wonderland - a similarly episodic feature based on beloved and relatively plot-free British books - was what drove Walt to make this bizarre decision with Winnie the Pooh. That seems to hold some weight.
If this all was indeed the case, how come the third short - 1974's Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too - took so long to come to fruition? The third short, and the subsequent final third of the film, is very much a post-Walt affair. More than anything, it was a training picture for many of Disney's then-new animators, including a returning Don Bluth. You can tell Bluth's animation from a mile away when Rabbit gets lost in the woods, for sure, as he can't keep his tongue in his mouth. The story appears to borrow from various Winnie the Pooh story LPs that Disneyland Records released throughout the end of the 1960s. (Blustery Day also first came out in record form in 1967, a year before the animated featurette's December 1968 theatrical debut with the flop live-action film The Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit.) It is unknown what the final third of Walt's unmade Winnie the Pooh film would've been.
Lastly, it is not as if Winnie the Pooh *wasn't* known by Americans pre-1966... So that seems to render the "Walt was unsure if American audiences would see a feature about that character because he wasn't well-known by Americans" claim moot. I firmly think the real story is, "Walt Disney's Winnie the Pooh", was a lot like the original Leica reel for The Wind in the Willows that was put together in 1941. The Wind in the Willows, based on yet another British literary classic (Kenneth Grahame's story of the same name), could've been the next feature-length film after Bambi's release in 1942. Animator Frank Thomas, of course one of Walt Disney's "Nine Old Men", explained in an interview that the Leica reel ran roughly 48 minutes long and did contain story problems. That no doubt pushed it back, as did World War II's effects on the animation wing. Wind in the Willows eventually wound up as a roughly 35-minute segment of the 1949 package feature The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad.
Walt seemed to have found the Pooh stories to be too fluffy to sustain a roughly 70-minute movie, and figured releasing smaller films based on the stories was the better option. His Winnie the Pooh film was initially planned for a 1965 release, almost two years after The Sword in the Stone and two years before The Jungle Book eventually came out, which partially explains that four-year gap between those two pictures. Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree debuted in February 1966 ahead of The Ugly Dachshund, and was heavily marketed as a double bill, and to no one's surprise, the stuffed bear cartoon completely overshadowed the Dean Jones dog movie. I don't think a Pooh feature was in the cards after that, for the next film after The Jungle Book was The Aristocats, which Walt signed off on before his death in December 1966. Being short films, both Honey Tree and Blustery Day could be shown and shown again on television, which they were. They kept the character a household name, audiences didn't have to wait years for a re-issue like they had to do for longer Disney animated films.
For whatever reason the Walt Winnie the Pooh movie was cancelled, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is still a Frankenstein creation. The 1974 Tigger Too short is not from the Walt era and is its own entity. So in the Disney animated feature "canon", you have a film with 2/3s of it coming from an unmade Walt Disney feature released in two parts from 1966 to 1968, and another 1/3 of it from something conceived well after that. Then you have the "goodbye" ending, which reportedly was once meant for the Blustery Day short. John Walmsley, who voiced Christopher Robin in that portion, voices him here too, which seems to confirm that it was indeed meant for it. Plus, it reuses some animation from a scene in The Jungle Book, which - again - opened a little over a year before Blustery Day debuted. If Blustery Day had been the final cartoon with that ending, it would've been a fitting sendoff being Walt's final animated work that he was alive for most of.
Quite funny how this Winnie the Pooh film is a big honey clustercuss, with a strangely convoluted history... But it's always been thought that it all works together anyways, whether you know the history of the film or if you don't. Ex away the history and the Frankensteinian structure of it, it's a charming anthology of stories about these stuffed animals going on fun misadventures and a nice bittersweet ending to top it off. It works completely fine as a 74-minute animated feature film, and the stories' aimlessness make it work in its own fun way.
To make matters even weirder, in 1983, Walt Disney Productions let out another 25-minute Pooh featurette, Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore. You would think this one was meant to be a training vehicle for new animator hires, but weirdly enough, it was completely outsourced to a studio called Rick Reinert Productions. The new animators instead worked on the featurette Mickey's Christmas Carol, which debuted later that year.
It occurred to me that there's an album that I love whose assemblage is very, very similar to how the 1977 feature The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh came together...
The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour...
Magical Mystery Tour was a surrealist television film that was made in the wake of the death of The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein. Six songs were newly conceived for this 50-or-so-minute film, which would air on the BBC on Boxing Day 1967. (That's December 26th for any Americans reading who may not be familiar with such a holiday.) Coinciding with the release was a six-song double-EP set a few weeks prior. An EP - "extended play", typically, was the same size of a single: A 7-inch record. Singles had one song on one side, and one song on the other. A-side, B-side. An EP could contain up to four songs on the record, and The Beatles were no strangers to the EP format. EPs seemed to be a much more popular kind of record in the UK, too. The Beatles' American distributor, Capitol Records, felt a two-EP record set was not viable for the US market...
Capitol Records is best known by Beatles historians for their Frankenstein-like assembling of albums. A single album in the UK like Rubber Soul could have its tracks spread across, say, THREE albums in the US. All of this mangling would eventually stop by 1967, with the seminal LP (long-player) album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band being the first Beatles album to have the same tracklisting in both the UK and the US. (With only a minor little difference between the two.) In Beatles tradition, some songs were never meant to be anything but just singles. For example, in 1966, there was The Beatles album Revolver, and a single: 'Paperback Writer' b/w 'Rain'. Two songs meant specifically for that single 7-inch 45rpm record.
In 1967, The Beatles released three singles. The first of which was 'Strawberry Fields Forever' b/w 'Penny Lane', released in February 1967. Both songs had been conceived for Sgt. Pepper, but because of a relative lull in releasing anything (Revolver had come out in August 1966, and there was - unusually - no Christmas market single release that year), it was decided to have those two songs be a single instead of tracks on the upcoming album. Next was 'All You Need Is Love' b/w 'Baby You're a Rich Man', released in July 1967, nearly two months after Sgt. Pepper. Last came 'Hello, Goodbye', on the B-side they attached the Magical Mystery Tour song 'I Am the Walrus', which later appeared on the two-EP set.
In the US, Capitol Records had all six songs from the movie put on side one of their Magical Mystery Tour LP. Side two would be the five other songs that The Beatles released in 1967, in order: 'Hello, Goodbye', 'Strawberry Fields Forever', 'Penny Lane', 'Baby You're a Rich Man', and 'All You Need Is Love'. Altogether, this is a very strong 11-track sequence. No surprise, that album shot to #1 on the charts, and it even got imported to the UK in early 1968 and charted as high as #31 - despite the EP and the separate singles existing over there. It works so well as an album, and as an equally psychedelic sequel to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band... even if it was never conceived as such in the first place.
And the weirdest thing is, the Magical Mystery Tour MOVIE was never aired in America, even though the LP came with a picture story of the movie. The movie itself had gotten such bad critical and equally poor audience reception (I'd imagine a lot of the viewership was families tuning in on Boxing Day to watch something together, and they got a weird aimless psychedelic home movie that confused the hell out of them), that ABC opted out of broadcasting it in January 1968-ish. So, Americans wouldn't really get to see that film until midnight showings occurred in the mid-1970s, followed by belated TV airings...
Oh, and the Magical Mystery Tour movie, much like Many Adventures, is just a silly delightful parade of whimsical misadventures...
