there's been a lot of discussion over the years about what's needed in a story premise to make it catnip for fandom (e.g. 'fantastical elements', 'well written but not TOO well written', 'spaces for creators to play', 'long running to allow for many discussions').
and i'm not saying any of that is wrong
but i think something missing from this discussion is:
clear framework template to make OCs
Warrior cat clans? great for OCs. Hogwarts Houses? great for OCs. Camp Half Blood cabins? great for OCs. Divergent classes? great for OCs. Sonic character template? great for OCs. Bending and elements? great for OCs. Star Wars aliens and Jedi light saber colors? great for OCs. Dungeons and Dragons of course was literally created to facilitate OC creation, and part of why it's been so enduringly popular is they struck gold with the Race-Class-Alignment structure.
a solid 60% of the reason MLP:FIM became so bananas level popular is because drawing OCs was soooo easy and you could easily customize it as a unicorn/pegasus/earth pony and a cutie mark and a nice color scheme to match
people really really like making OCs. make it easy for them to make OCs, and fandom will flourish.

Tbf Elemental Dragon has a nice backstory and doesn't actually look bad
going from dragonic knight -> primitive dragon -> elemental dragon felt like one of the most severe series of downgrades in rider history but like all things related to saber i grew to love them dearly

i do enjoy Saber a lot more now but I think it's biggest weakness is that it doesn't know how to pace itself with a big main cast
there are interesting and good things here. Rintaro being torn between his loyalty as a swordsman and his bond with his friends is one. but because we spend so much time with every other swordsman as well all we see is Rintaro looking Sad(tm) every episode for like ten episodes. Same with Kento - him being traumatized by the bad futures is a great plotline, but because a lot of other things are going on, we often just see him stand there and look miserable and say cryptic things once per episode (also I think they showed their hand way early with showing that this is ALREADY a future Kento hadn't seen. Kento hadn't seen Elemental Dragon, he hadn't seen them saving Mei he hadn't seen Rintaro defeat Zooous. I think it would have hit harder if he HAD seen foreseen these chain of events as well, and THEN it gets harder to convince him that they can still do something else).
Durandal makes me irrationally angry though for such bullshit reasons lmao, I mean I guess he can still redeem himself in my eyes if he shows me he has a fuckin Purpose
(Ren also kind of makes me. Eh. But he finally joined up with Desast, so I'm hoping I'll enjoy his thing more.)
And because of the big cast, a lot of characters don't get much to do (hello Daishinji and Ogami... just to stay with the Riders), and also. Like.
Okay.
Hello I'm G, certified villain stan, 2/3rd into Saber, and I still don't give a shit about either of the villains. Besides you know. That Storious and Master Logos absolutely fucked. You know it, I know it, let's move on.
And it bums me out. I love entertaining villains. Storious is the only one who somewhat interests me, I guess.
And Mei still should have became Espada, I will die on this hill.

RPG Role Analysis Series #6 - Dragon Quest III vs. Final Fantasy I vol.II
Here are my thoughts on the remainder of the classes that I did not cover in my previous post:
Tumblr media
Thief (FF) / Thief (DQIII) - Dragon Quest III only even has a Thief starting with the Super Famicom remake, which also adds new whips and boomerangs that allow them to be proficient at multi-target basic attacks, despite not having high strength for single-target damage. They do however have good defences, as it's affected by their Agility stat. Stealing for the DQIII Thief means a high chance of taking an item from the last enemy defeated in a fight, So instead of actively stealing they're really a lucky, somewhat tanky class that sweeps up or weakens groups of enemies while a Warrior knocks them out one-by one. Since multi-target attacks rarely knock out enemies on their own, the Thief actually sort of lets someone else choose who to knock out last and steal from. They also get some utility spells that exclusively have to deal with scouting dungeon floors and the treasure within (including one random encounter reducing spell, if you want to call that scouting). They feel more like a careful treasure hunter than a thief. The Final Fantasy I Thief was way different. Once they promote to Ninja, they have access to Haste and Temper, spells that boost the attack power and hit rate of any party member, and other lower level Black Magic, meaning stat debuff and status effects, and some (not their best option) elemental magic. They have the highest Agility, making them go earlier in battle, and more able to flee (in versions where the bugged stats are fixed). Interestingly, the FFI "Thief" has no ability to steal items at all, though the Ninja name fits better for a speedy warrior who strikes true, traps enemies with sleep, slowing, and confusion magic, makes a fast escape, and has maybe some elemental ninjutsu, if needed.
Red Mage (FF) /Sage (DQIII) - In DQIII, the Sage is considered an advanced class that has special prerequisites (either train as a jester first, or have a key item, but if you meet those requirements, the Sage has all the best features of both the Cleric and Mage, encouraging you to replace your magic-users with the Sage. Stat growth is affected by the character's path to Sage, but promoting is an easy choice. The only disadvantage it their low EXP growth, making them a good sort of "reward" to switch to last minute. Final Fantasy also has a hybrid healing/hurting magic class, the Red Mage, but in this it is more of a compromise. They just about reach the highest tiers of Black and White magic, though cant cast the top-tier spells like Holy, Flare, Full-life, Curaja, Diaja, Saber, etc. They do however get access to a good selection of armor, and can attack, if not as well as the Warrior, at least good enough, no matter what you have them doing. The Red Mage has a lot of flexibility, and is more of a true jack of all trades than DQIII's Sage, which is a prestige class for both kinds of casters.
Tumblr media
There are also a few other classes in Dragon Quest III with no direct equivalent in Final Fantasy:
Jester (DQIII) - Strange class. They have very low stats other than luck, so might at best shrug off detrimental effects occasionally, but they mainly exist as a shortcut to Sage, being an alternate path that does not require a key item. Remakes give them one spell to instantly trigger an enemy battle, but they are a liability in combat. Thing of Jesters as a grinding tool, but actually more like taking a Magikarp to eventually get a Gyarados. Since the Sage usurps both the Cleric and Mage rather than occupying a niche alongside them, the Jester is a pain that you can be rewarded for.
Merchant (DQIII) - Merchants let you collect additional gold after battle, for those who want their bonus more liquid than the items a Thief aquires. They also level up quickly. The remakes allow them to excavate gold and items on the world map or summon Inns for resting, Churches to save and buy resurrections from a priest, and Item Shops at will. The role of the merchant is to keep your party polished with easy access to the best armor, make sure they can always afford it, and keep them rested and restored on the road.
Hero (DQIII) - The Hero is a special class which only Erdrick has access to. They have access to a variety of spells, and again are a type of magic knight like the DQ1 Hero and DQ2's Prince of Cannock, having lower MP than dedicated magic users like the Sage, but good access to a variety of spells, and good physical stats. In fact, their list of spells is so similar, I could just refer you to my read on Prince of Cannock, though most notably gets a stronger multi-target healing spell than even the Cleric and Sage. If anything, perhaps Hero is the true analogue to Final Fantasy's Red Mage, and not the Sage.

Redacted X Monster Hunter Stories P1: Listeners
I've been playing a lot of Monster Hunter Stories 2 recently and I have come up with an au that crosses redacted with monster hunter stories
Freelancer has a Rathalos
You can't convince me that heart of gold Freelancer who cares more about how their friends feels after a traumatic event and even tried making amends with water bitch would not be able to bond with a Rathalos
Rathalos are wyvern monsters with a poisonous tail and the ability to shoot fire. They are commonly red in color with spikes going down their spine and on their tails, pointed ears, sharp talon-like claws and blue-black striped. They have the ability to fly, and their kinship skill is Sky High Dive.
Tumblr media
Angel has a Mizutsune
Perfect for Angel, Mizutsune can slide around when using their field skill and if you can't time turns correctly you will smash into every wall in the map (they also sashay when walking). Not to mention the Mizutsune boss is incredibly annoying with the bubbles it spits so yeah, Angel's monster
Mizutsune are leviathan monsters that resemble foxes (somewhat) with the ability to spit bubbles. They are tan with pink/purple fins that have yellow and red spots and purple under fur. They have sharp claws, especially in the front. They have the ability to dash, and their kinship skill is Moonlight Transience.
Tumblr media
Baaabe has a Palamute
Specifically the water one, solely because of the ears. Basically, Palamutes are dog monsters and you will never be able to sit here and say Baaabe, who has a golden retriever for a boyfriend would not have a Palamute
Palamute are wolf like monsters that come in 6 colors. Purplish-blue (No element), Light blue (Ice), Orange (Fire), Yellow (Electric) Sky blue (Water) and Red (Dragon). Palamutes share many physical attributes with wolves and dogs, from the tails to the paws. They have the abilities to either Jump or Climb, and their kinship skill is a variation of Rising Axel that depends on the type.
Tumblr media
Sweetheart has a Nargacuga
Do I really need to explain this one? Nargacuga have the ability to disappear and reappear into shadows. That's literally sweetheart.
Nargacuga are are commonly black as to blend in with the shadows. They have a bird like face complete with beak and ears resembling a great horned owl's head feathers. They have sharp wings that are used to cut things, as they cannot fly. Their long, feather/furless tail as spikes they fling at their opponents. They have the ability of stealth, and their kinship skill is Dark Thrash.
Tumblr media
Lovely has a Boltreaver Astalos
Astalos are basically giant flying thunder dragons. Need I say more?
Boltreaver Astalos are a subvariant of the Astalos species. They are larger than the common Astalos, and every part that was originally green is now blue. They has spikes doing down their back and tail with crystal-like spikes on their tail, uniquely patterned wings, a forehead crest which helps to channel electricity and sharp claws. They have the ability to fly, and their kinship skill is Astalos Saber.
Tumblr media
Darlin has a Nergigante
Nergigante are elder dragons, which I feel that out of everything, Darlin' could control the best. Despite having wings they don't have the ability to fly and instead roar at other monsters to shut up and can smash headfirst into rocks. Yeah... Perfect for them.
Nergigante are elder dragons that have large bull-like horns and spikes all over their body, from their heads to their tails. Their bellies and wings are multicolored, with hints of yellows and purples. They have four legs with sharp claws. They have the ability to stop other monsters from attacking by roaring as well as breaking rocks with their horns, and their kinship skill is Decimating Fist.
Tumblr media
If this does well enough I might make a part two with the boys monsters

Would you be willing to list out the guide animals and their analyses from your ATLA bender quiz?
I understand that's a big request, so if not, could you further explain the armadillo bear? 🔥
of course! 48 is shorter than most of my quizzes, so i'll post it here but tuck it behind a read more.
for the armadillo bear specifically, as you can see below, their primary element is going to be of fire: associated with ambition, power, and willpower. they're a more rare option as their secondary is earth: associated with sturdiness, determined, and personal morals/intentions. and finally they're the fire/earth guide that is most intentioned towards survival: the one who knows when to stand firm and when to bend, the one who will always come out of struggles, no matter if it's broken and alone.
to elaborate more on this form, i think your result best describes someone who's ambitious and passionate but more like ever-burning cinders than a roaring fire. you're strong in your convictions and flare when someone pokes the bear (ha ha) but you are not someone who other acts without thought or even rests without the certainty there's nothing at their back. you may be strong-willed and determined, but like the armadillo bear, you keep your wits about you and don't persist at an impossible task for the sake of glory. sometimes it is better to change tactics and center yourself so that you may burn brighter tomorrow. you are admirable for your longevity, passion, and vision; you are wounded in how your instinct is to rely solely on yourself and your perspective.
and all of the results:
firebender fire - dragon (avatar of strength) - mongoose lizard (avatar of survival) - dragon moose (avatar of service)
water - iguana seal (avatar of strength) - badgerfrog (avatar of survival) - flying dolphin fish (avatar of service)
earth - tigerdillo (avatar of strength) - armadillo bear (avatar of survival) - komodo rhino (avatar of service)
air - tiger monkey (avatar of strength) - fire ferret (avatar of survival) - koala sheep (avatar of service)
waterbender fire - serpent (avatar of strength) - tiger seal (avatar of survival) - owl wolf (avatar of service)
water - snow leopard caribou (avatar of strength) - polar leopard (avatar of survival) - polar bear dog (avatar of service)
earth - arctic camel (avatar of strength) - turtle seal (avatar of survival) - buffalo yak (avatar of service)
air - snow rat (avatar of strength) - otter penguin (avatar of survival) - koalaotter (avatar of service)
earthbender fire - saber-toothed moose lion (avatar of strength) - hog monkey (avatar of survival) - shirshu (avatar of service)
water - elephant koi (avatar of strength) - catgator (avatar of survival) - eel hound (avatar of service)
earth - badgermole (avatar of strength) - platypus bear (avatar of survival) - camelephant (avatar of service)
air - giant rhinoceros beetle (avatar of strength) - fox antelope (avatar of survival) - jackalope (avatar of service)
airbender fire - raven eagle (avatar of strength) - lizard crow (avatar of survival) - lion vulture (avatar of service)
water - cranefish (avatar of strength) - sea vulture (avatar of survival) - toucan puffin (avatar of service)
earth - wolfbat (avatar of strength) - iguana parrot (avatar of survival) - wolfbat (avatar of service)
air - flying bison (avatar of strength) - winged lemur (avatar of survival) - kitten moth (avatar of service)

I know this is gonna require a dive way back into the past….way back. Anyhow, my brain once decided “Hey, what would happen if the Saber crew went and teamed up with the Shinienger. And had to do the Shinienger roll call”? Now to be fair, all the swords men/women have titles so it would not be that out of place. But it be so long….
Also they would totally group off in a fight. Like Kaoru, Takeru, Touma, Sophia as one. Ryo, Kotoha, Tetsuo, Reika….you get the gist.
No, I totally get it. Saber/Shinkenger is such a good crossover concept.
Honestly though, if they're gonna split off into smaller groups, I imagine the groupings something like this:
Takeru and Kaoru + Touma and Kento: Obvious for the fire elemental, but also because iirc there's a lightning element disk that isn't used often belonging to the Shiba clan.
Ryuunosuke + Rintaro and Sophia: Ryuunosuke and Rintaro are both water elementals, Ryuunosuke and Sophia are both dragon-themed.
Mako + Ren and Reika: Wind elementals (Mako and Renn) and badass women (Mako and Reika). I can imagine a combi where Ren throws his shuriken powered by Mako's wind and hidden by Reika's fog
Chiaki and Kotoha + Ryo and Tetsuo: Chiaki and Kotoha are earth elementals like Ryo, and Tetsuo tends to stick with Ryo in group fights
Genta + Yuri and Ryouga: Genta and Yuri are both light elementals, and Genta and Ryouga have unusual sword styles (Genta uses iaido and Ryouga's sword doubles as a trident/spear).

*smacks game designers with a rolled up newspaper*
No. Stop it.
Unless you're creating an alternate history and saying George Washington was a paladin and King George was an evil sorcerer or something, stop it.
Make a system for this. Don't use D&D. D&D is a *FANTASY* system. It is designed for settings and games with *FANTASTICAL ELEMENTS*. Now, that can be dragons and gods and magic, or it can be aliens and rayguns and spaceships, or something along those lines.
A class based system like D&D is not going to work well for a period, non-fantastical game. D&D applied to the revolutionary war produces a George Washington that can shrug off direct cannonball hits and is better off wading into melee with his saber than trying to do anything with a musket.
Use GURPS, use BRPG, hell, use Classic Storyteller, at least that limits you to sevenish hit boxes and specifically says "no, you don't get to shrug off artillery fire if you're a normal human."
Stop it.
At least Broncosaurus Rex put dinosaurs and shamans into Colonial Times...

in case you were wondering, this is the current list of archetypes for the upcoming archetype tournament.
please note that the tournament won't be for a while, and i will be accepting submissions until then! All submissions will be accepted (as long as the submission is actually an archetype, of course)
A bunch of these are just me putting in every archetype i could think of, and those are the only ones that might end up being removed from this list. If someone specifically submits an archetype, it's in for good.
anyways here is the full list (current number: 220)

Considering how Reiwa super forms seem to stem from a berserker form, I’m guessing that’s how we’ll get Geats’s (probably near the end of Divergence)
Zero One had both Shining Assault Hopper and Metal Cluster Hopper with their connection to the Ark
Saber’s transition from Primitive Dragon to Elemental Dragon
Revice’s jump from Jack Revice to Thunder Gale Revice
It’s a bit of a trend, here

Woah i just noticed your bio said ”ask about my dnd campaign” so may i just… do that? like i know ive seen bits and pieces on my timeline, but if ever you feel like infodumping about it, pls feel free too!! id love to hear about it
ok buckle up!!!!
So my campaign actually just ended in February. Our party was the dragonborn cleric/rogue Krista, tiefling monk Bella, centaur warlock Eddie, and my half-elf sorcerer Brie. The campaign was heavily inspired by taz balance... The party's home base was a city called Astra, led by a council of four NPCs who each represented an element. Early on in the campaign the party discovered a cursed book that gave them nightmares of a really fucked up deer and spiral symbols while rescuing Barry Bluejeans Jimmy Jorts. The party then went through a series of element-themed arcs and slowly discovered pieces of a big puzzle.
The Air arc was first, and the party won a dragon race and did a heist against fantasy joe exotic (this was back in May 2020), recovering a relic that revealed that the gods of the elements, which the city of Astra historically relied on for their wisdom, had died in a horrible war. Meanwhile, they gave their Cursed Deer Book to one of the council members (Humboldt, my beloved retired gnome!), and set him up on a date with his coworker, a human wizard named Iris. I think they also discovered the mysterious Forest Clearing of five pillars outside the city at this point too, which they were led to by the Oracle (a dog, who talks but only rarely).
The second arc was Earth, where the party went on a rescue mission for Krista's friend and navigated a Home Alone-style orphanage and a crypt full of otherworldly cultists. They also came face-to-face with the BBEG in this one on accident, but all they learned was that he was a shadowy god in the astral plane with lots of spiral imagery, locked up in chains. The next collective deer nightmare was really confusing, because the deer speaking to them seemed to confuse them with someone they knew, and they also didn't have the book anymore. But, most importantly, the deer threatened to unleash the apocalypse and told the party that their time was running out, as the solar eclipse is in just a few months.
The next arc and my personal favorite was Water, where the party was sent after a passage into the Plane of Water on a hunt for clues about the Goddess of Water's death and how to stop the next apocalypse. This dnd campaign can fit so many pirates in it. The party got stuck in a time loop on a pirate ship, and each loop ended with the goddess Umberlee/the Kraken destroying the ship. The party had to deceive the captain (Bella's ex, the vampirate Edward Cullen. I shit you not) and return Umberlee's mermaid daughter to her to break the loop. After breaking the loop they were transported to the plane of water where they discovered the ruins of a triton city and murals revealing that the shadowy spiral god, Tharizdun, and the secret fifth elemental god (god of Void), had killed the other Elemental gods. The party met a triton soldier named Kelp (he's just underwater Link and this is underwater BOTW) who eventually gifted the party the Bond Blade.
God. Let me TELL YOU about the Bond Blade, my pride and joy. This sword is literally powered by love. You whisper a name of someone you love to activate it, with varying degrees of strength. It was made to kill Tharizdun. The elemental gods failed against their traitorous friend because he cornered each of them, killing them separately, and by the time he got to the Water Goddess who wielded the sword, it was useless to her as her strongest bonds were severed by death. Anyway, it's like a hilt with a broken blade and when you activate it it forms a beam of light like a light saber. On a crit (18 and up!) in it's strongest form, it deals like 12d12 damage. I fucking love this dumb sword.
Anyway. The party killed Vampirate Edward Cullen who turned out to have also been a Tharizdun cultist because why not. When the party returned home though, they discovered that their friend Humboldt (remember our little gnome friend from before? Did I mention he was originally based on Jack Black's character in Jumanji?) had fallen into a deep paranoia/agoraphobia because of this cursed deer book he's studying for the party. The party only discovered this because they found his girlfriend (and their boss) Iris getting stood up at Fantasy Olive Garden. When they pressed her for an explanation about why she was eating dinner alone, she broke down in tears about it under a zone of truth. The party confronted Humboldt, and it was, and I quote, "some silence of the lambs shit" level of creepy (I've never seen silence of the lambs). My little gnome blorbo was doodling spirals on his hands, actively being posessed by Tharizdun and immediately Not Remembering It, and cackling like a damn villain. Have you ever had a good DM Cackle? It's so fucking powerful.
The party and Iris want to help Humboldt and hear something about a "black rock" in the mountains. The party travels to these mountains and discovers, you guessed it, another cult! But this one is led by a tiefling woman and a - well, a false hydra. The party figured this out in the middle of a 5-dimensional trauma dungeon (the "initiation rites" that were supposed to break them emotionally). Conveniently, the dimensional dungeon was also taking place within the black rock, which is a giant eldritch cube floating in the middle of a volcano where this cult is based. This is some critical role level shit now. The party's like, level 15 by this point? After escaping the dungeon and killing the cult leader and false hydra, the party had to evacuate the erupting volcano and grabbed some black rock on their way out.
They get back to Astra just before the eclipse and prepare for ???? the end of the world??? The day of, Iris and Humboldt meet them at the Oracle's altar and then they all go to the Forest Clearing together... and shit gets weird. Humboldt goes full tilt posessed and Iris does too, and everyone's confused and sorta fighting them from completing a ritual. The ritual opens a portal, and out steps just about the worst thing you can possibly summon that's not a god - a Nightwalker. The nightwalker traps Krista, the party's healer (!), in the astral plane (essentially killing her). The party fights the thing, which was really fucking hard because I had FOUR NPCS in this fight (Iris, Humboldt - who very almost died-, a bard named Keats, and my girlie Brie) and the party still almost died. Shit.
To end the fight, Keats, who was Krista's enemies-to-lovers-but-platonic-soulmates love interest, decides to sacrifice himself to bring Krista back and banish the nightwalker. This is how the nightwalker works, folks. Krista and Keats met on the shore of the astral sea as they passed each other by out of/into death, and by the end of it we had the whole table crying. Krista vows to save him one day.
We haven't even made it to the final boss fight yet.
After some wild crazy magic happens with that one, the party figures out how to activate the pillars in the forest clearing. The oracle dog transforms into Ao, our ouroboros overgod, and reveals that the party are the reincarnations of the elemental gods. This was really fun because each party member actually emulated an element on their own, so it fit so naturally. I made them all cry again, but happy tears this time. This was what the whole campaign was working towards. This was the big reveal that I hinted to for ages! The party also learns here that Tharizdun was corrupted by a black hole, which he placed in his heart, on a desperate search for something to fill the Void that he is.
So Tharizdun, that guy? Big, shadowy eldritch horror chained up in the astral plane? yeah he gets out. It's the eclipse after all. They all knew this was coming to some degree, and I let each player pick something they specifically wanted in this big boss fight. One of my players requested that Magnus Burnsides fight with them... so the 7 birds answered the call. The party spends some time on a battle field, kills some eldritch cultists, invading giant space worms, and then Tharizdun rears his ugly deer-skull eldritch head. Magnus Fucking Burnsides helps them wail on Tharizdun with some really OP weapons. Folks, let's keep in mind that Magnus canonically Can't Die (yet) so this was uhhhh hard! I somehow got him out of that fight. Tharizdun corrupts Eddie our warlock (think TMA-style) and very nearly kills our monk Bella. Krista polymorphed Eddie to neutralize him and when Tharizdun thought his work here was done he popped back to the astral plane for safety, to watch the apocalypse from afar. The party found him though, but knew they couldn't kill him or it would either destroy the world or permanently corrupt Eddie. Tharizdun was so angry and bitter. He knew he'd been beat but he couldn't admit it, insisting there was no going back. It was pitiful. He was practically begging to be killed, and down to 23 HP, but Krista?? Pried the black hole out of his heart?? with the Bond Blade????
She literally. Used the power of love to remove the void of hate and nihilism from their oldest friend.
And then she stabbed Tharizdun where it had been before. This transformed Tharizdun into a new god, a void fawn of acceptance and joy, ending the apocalypse.
(this is the part where I cried the most).
After saving the world, the party celebrated by thowing a circus in honor of their old bard friend Keats. Krista eventually used a Wish to resurrect him, but in the way that she worded it, and using part of the black rock for the spell... his soul came back, but in the rock. Some FMAB shenanigans later and we have a warforged bard boy, back to live out the rest of his days with his platonic soulmate. Eddie settled down with his love interest, the innkeeper, and they lived a nice little cottagecore lifestyle afterwards, with Eddie meeting up with Humboldt regularly to talk out the trauma of their Tharizdun corruption arcs. Bella, on the other hand, broke up with her boyfriend, which was just. so fucking funny? And the campaign ended with our new void fawn friend frolicking in the forest clearing outside the circus celebration before disappearing, looking for new bonds to forge and stories to tell.
....All this because my friend wanted to try Lost Mines of Phandelver (or, "Here There be Gerblins") when covid hit the US.

1. what’s their full name?
ayrenn marcelette emelina urthemiel of plaithus!
2. what does their name mean? why were they named that?
ayrenn actually shares her name and surname with two characters from elder scrolls and dragon age! ayrenn means mountain of strength (oo she’ll need it if shes gonna survive dealing with her mom and former bestie sjnxak) I couldn’t find a meaning behind her surname but! urthemiel was the archdemon of beauty! her middle names are based on variations of the names of her moms! marcelette being a diminutive of marcelle and is derived from the name of the roman god mars! it’s fitting as she was the commander of that plaithian military and the symbolism of being a phoenix and “fires of war” hehe. and emelina is a diminutive of emmeline meaning “work!” dragon age and elder scrolls are two of my favorite fantasy worlds every (along with the witcher!) and when i was thinking of names for her they ayrenn and urthemiel popped into my head! epiphany! stars aligned etc! I knew they were perfect for her and to pay homage to the worlds I adore so much!
3. do they have any nicknames?
she doesn’t have any nicknames unfortunately but she does have a few aliases! the one she tends to use the most is either lilith or before her exile she just went by her title!
4. how old are they?
she is 24!
5. when’s their birthday?
she was born on the 19th of february!
6. what’s their zodiac sign/element/birthstone/etc.? do they believe that holds any significance?
her zodiac is a pisces with a cusp in aquarius leaning into pisces! ironically enough with her being the painted phoenix her element matches her zodiac in that her’s would be water!
(oo the internal conflict sjdans SORRY AYRENN DEAR) as those bearing the element of water tend to take everything to heart (especially things done to them.... FITTING), have a strong intuition and pick up on the emotions of other easily which is GREAT when she had a politics specialty and being the commander it was useful to read the emotions of her opponents and knew their movements before they acted on them, and..... not the most willing to open up about themselves and remain rather mysterious! and finally that her own desire for security leaves her to resort to risk taking behaviors at any cost to feel whole again! that’s her! her
and her birthstone would be the amethyst as she was born in february! and if she believe that they hold significance, I think if the circumstances of her childhood were different, if she was allowed to have a life of her own that wasn’t tethered by any red strings of fate or destinies, etc that I think there is a high chance she would have! but alas the tides of time proved that if she had hopes of such things, they’re long gone now. so she really doesn’t? what good would it do when shes been told her whole life what her fate is? what use is destiny when she has no choice on how she fulfills it?
7. what’s their species/subspecies? do they have any special/magical abilities?
she’s a mythosi with her blood infused from the procedure with that of a phoenix! and you can BET she does! not necessarily a magical ability per say, but she does have immortality (don’t remind her that saber doesn’t BAD idea), she had wings (also refrain from reminding her of THAT sajndka), resistance to flame and the ability to manipulate and release flames from her hands/body, when transformed her heart and bones would begin to glow, eyes would turn from their red into lava resembling orbs, and! her hair would become flame!
8. what “class” do they belong to (for fantasy characters)? if none, what weapon do they favor?
she doesn’t have a “set” class per say but the closest i would put her down having a class with is a sort of blood hunter/paladin hybrid? or the way solaire was in terms of class in dark souls? WAIT okay the prisoner class in elden ring is definitely a closer fit! the prisoner and ayrenn would be besties for sure kjwednw
the weapon that she prefers is a scythe! (or halberd!) ayrenn on a battlefield with a flame covered scythe.. we love to see it!
Tumblr media
1. what’s their alignment?
shes a chaotic good! a good person with good intentions but of course her methods are unconventional (alessa and hadrian would best describe her as a hot mess with good intentions hehe)
2. which one of the 16 personality types do they fit into?
her’s would be the isfp-a “the adventurer!” it’s so interesting to me with that as I played the if and got to know her more as a character throughout reading golden rose I realized how much more fitting she is as an introvert than an extrovert! and the adventurer is a perfect bridge between those two! being charismatic and reserved all the while its so fitting!
3. what are their hobbies and interests? do they have any particular “favorites” (food, books, and so on)?
she loves to collect ornate and ceremonial daggers! and a beloved hobby of hers is to collect, usually roses or peonies, and press them into books! when she has down time picking flowers from local markets or fields she’ll make perfumes with them! best of all verlaine LOVES to give raf a hard time as much as he enjoys to give her a hard time asjnsda she is an avid collector of relics of her patron goddess aphrodite from before things went awry and the gods ceased to be worshipped! yes shes aware that’s heretical what about it? jsanja. ANYWAYS, she does! rosewater lemonade and a sweet bread with lemon icing is a true beloved of hers! romantic compilations of love notes or poetry is a dear peace of literature (GET TO WRITING RAF), and old leather bound books, pressed flowers, perfumes, relics of aphrodite and ornate daggers are her favs!
4. what are they bad at?
will she ever admit to these? that’s silly! what she isnt so great at is why she’s so grateful that hadrian is in her life, as she isn’t the most proficient in melee and swords (save for the rapier shes proficient with those!). she much prefers her daggers! (also not being the queen of pity parties at any small inconvenience is perhaps what some would say is what she isnt great at as well but she couldn’t find a reason why.. must be jealousy!)
5. what kind of things do they dislike/hate?
her ego being bruised is something she LOATHES (leo things sajnsak), that sort of hot weather that ruins a carefully prepared look with the humidity or temperature, THAT A CERTAIN BELOVED OF HERS KEEPS BEING A STEP AHEAD AND TAKES HER THINGS.. take her out for dinner not take her maps babes!
6. do they have any vices/addictions/mental illnesses?
not any that I can think of currently! but maybe vices could be her less than frugalness with money when it comes to markets? she was told to hand over her money to hadrian for the VERY REASON that as there is a market it is known by the group she will spend... all of it sjkna.
7. what are their goals and motivations?
i think what would be verlaines main aspirations would be of course to uncover the identity of this nero sort, to learn all she can about her patron goddess aphrodite and the other forgotten gods..... and to wed raf kasnks.
8. what are their manners like? Any habits?
she came from an noble-ish upper class background! her family fell out of favor with the other families back in syracusae and whatever wasn’t auctioned off was more than likely gambled off in an effort to stay relevant.. so that is why she is traveling with the white company! and because of said background she remains to have the same sort of countenance as she did back then! it makes her a DEAR to the wealthy people they meet (and she cons money from hehe).
9. what are they most afraid of?
that her own desires and ambitions, her hubris, being the downfall of those she cares about is something I would say is a fear that haunts her nightmares! sure, she wants to know all there is, and to uncover the identity of this nero and the forgotten gods is a dream of hers. but that it could come at the cost of people she holds dear is something that haunts her at times.
