excerpt from an audio-translation I worked on with a colleague of mine; we translated Draupadī's imposing speech as rendered in modern Mahābhārat retellings. Draupadī utters this speech after she is dragged to the royal hall by her hair, and is assaulted & sexually harassed by the men of the Kuru dynasty. she renounces her status as a wife; in the Sanskrit Mbh, symbolically, by refusing to tie her hair again, while in modern renderings, explicitly, by directly renouncing her husbands who passively watched her humiliation.

in this sequence, Draupadī curses the Kurus. the curse bears similarities across the Sanskrit & modern tellings; that just as she bled in the sabhā (royal court / hall), so will all the men bleed on the battlefield, and just as she wept with her hair untied, so will their women cry before their corpses with their hair dishevelled (tied hair was the marking of a wife / bride, untied hair, of a widow).

Religious Studies Term Of The Day: Singh Sabha

Hey everyone. Today I wanted to talk about colonization. Yes. Colonization affects everyone in a culture, including religion. Sikhi was not immune to change during the imperial rule of the British over the Indian Subcontinent. This reform movement happened because of the influx of British education and Christian missionaries, which allowed Sikhs to become middle class rather than the poor and ostracized of India. This allowed for these middle class Sikhs to bring about reforms that were generally loyal to British goals. They expanded education and religious roles for women, giving them their own name (Kaur) just as men got Singh (as I mentioned yesterday), and allowed women to be initiated into the Khalsa. This was absolutely great and wonderful, and controversial, but a great step at continuing the progress that Sikhi sort of has always seemed to represent, even if these reformers did get a bit revisionist with some of their changes. Now, while I think this is a wonderful result of colonization, am I going to take that and sit here and defend the British imperial rule? Absolutely not. I appeal to the Torah, where Joseph confronts his brothers for the suffering they put him through, which resulted in him becoming the Pharaoh’s right hand man: “What you intended was evil, but God has used it for good.” This was good, but we cannot forget the evils that were caused in order to do this one nice thing in religious history.
