Sexual harassment on the street will be made a crime with jail sentences of up to two years, the government has said.
Wolf-whistling, catcalling and staring persistently will be criminalised in England under plans backed by Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
Sexual harassment is already illegal but it is hoped creating a new offence for street harassment will encourage more people to report it to police.
"Every woman should feel safe to walk our streets," Ms Braverman said.
"We are putting the needs of victims at the heart of our decision, which will mean the criminals who commit these acts face the consequences they deserve," the home secretary added.
A survey by pollsters YouGov for the BBC, published in March, suggested two-thirds of women did not feel safe walking alone at night, at least some of the time.
Females under 34 are most likely to be the target of sexual offences but the least likely to report them, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
The Crown Prosecution Service, which decides whether to take cases to court, recently updated its advice to staff about street harassment. The new guidelines also cover offences like exposure, stalking and sexual assault.
The murder of Sarah Everard, who was abducted and killed by a serving policeman while walking home in south London last year, has also increased concerns over women's safety and attitudes towards women.
Six months later, primary school teacher Sabina Nessa, 28, was murdered in south London by a man she had never met.
The government will now back legislation tabled by former business secretary Greg Clark.
The backbencher's bill will introduce harsher sentences for someone who deliberately harasses, alarms, or distresses someone in a public place, and increasing the maximum sentences from six months to two years.
In 2021, then home secretary Priti Patel launched a consultation on making street harassment a specific crime. The Home Office has now concluded it should be introduced after "the significant majority" of respondents were in favour.
Earlier this year, the Independent Government Adviser for Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls, Nimco Ali claimed the government had blocked the legislation.
Labour's shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, welcomed the government backing a new law.
She said: "Any action to tackle the epidemic of violence against women and girls is welcome, but the government must now go further and faster."

ㅤ ㅤ⸻ ㅤ ㅤPROFILE.
ㅤ ㅤcom tanta energia e conhecimento, começou a participar de pequenos projetos cinematográficos, como assistente, até que em 2010 teve a primeira oportunidade de substituir um dos roteiristas na produção de crazy nights. a partir desse momento, vik começou a escrever sua trajetória em hollywood. nessa época inicial, projetos voltados para o público jovem a chamaram, como a série tell me something (2010–2013) e o filme para televisão not a lot going on at the moment (2010). porém, foi quando dirigiu dois curta-metragens em 2011, strangers e my year of contemplation, que chamou atenção do mundo cinematográfico.

I'm not sure how well known this story is outside of the UK but it's been in the news here again in the last few days and it's really important
Zara was one of the many women who was murdered by a stranger in the last few years. And yes, obviously statistically you are in far more danger from someone you know, but there have been many similar cases- Sarah Everard, Sabina Nessa, Julia James, Ashling Murphy, Nicole Smallman & Bibaa Henry etc (I hate that I could think of this many just off the top of my head)
Her killer had previously been in prison and had multiple convictions, and he had been released only a couple of weeks before Zara's murder. She was also not his only victim that night- he had stalked multiple other women however she was the only one who was physically attacked. Despite this her murder was not considered to be premeditated
He was sentenced to 38 years originally, he refused to attend his sentencing which actually sparked a conversation about whether or not criminals should be legally forced to attend sentencing. But his sentence has just been reduced by 5 years so he will now be in prison for a minimum of 33 years- in itself, this isn't a massive difference but the reasoning is awful:
Tumblr media
^ Essentially, as Zara was unconscious for most of the time that she was being attacked and murdered, she apparently didn't suffer enough (mentally or physically) for her killer to deserve the longer sentence he was originally given
I just cannot get my head around that. So cruel and disrespectful to Zara and her loved ones

MARYLAND: BBC TO BROADCAST PLAY ADAPTATION STARRING ZAWE ASHTON
The BBC will broadcast the television adaptation of Maryland this month, a play by one of the UK’s leading playwrights about the culture of violence against women.
Tumblr media
First seen at the Royal Court in London in 2021 and a fictional artistic response to recent real-life events, the play grapples with the violence women are forced to reckon with in their everyday lives.
This new 30-minute adaptation, co-directed with acclaimed documentary-maker Brian Hill, tells the story of two everywomen, both called Mary, and a chorus of modern day furies as they deliver their stories of assault.
Zawe Ashton and Hayley Squires play the lead roles of two individual Marys, who meet at a police station in the aftermath of their respective sexual assaults.
They are supported by a cast of furies who rail against the injustices the women face both in the events of the play, and in the wider world.
Lucy Kirkwood says: “I wrote the original play as a howl against the way we have normalised violence against women as something to be accommodated by women themselves, rather than protested by all of us...
"Against the way that women, especially women of colour, cannot at present even rely on the forces of law and order to protect or respect their bodies...
"Against the recent deaths of women including Sarah Everard, Bibaa Henry, Nicole Smallman and Sabina Nessa in particular, and the anxiety and fear which we culture girls to expect and accept in general.
"I hope the film will give new oxygen to that protest, but I wish it was not still such an urgent conversation.”
Suzy Klein, Head of Arts and Classical Music TV at the BBC, says: “Lucy Kirkwood is one of the most exciting voices in British theatre, whose work has won awards for its portrayal of issues around social justice, climate change and politics.
"Maryland brings Lucy’s searing, incisive vision to the issue of male violence against women and I’m really proud to have it broadcast on the BBC with this extraordinary cast...
"It’s not a piece that gives any easy answers to one of the most pressing social problems of our time, but it’s impossible to look away from this compelling play - a work brought to us by one of the most trusted and sensitive voices in contemporary drama.”
It will TX on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on 20 July at 10pm. (x)

Research Project Draft & Notes
Working Title:
The urban fairy tale: 'A woman who walks at night'
Main topics:
Introduction – discuss the issue of walking at night for women and how it’s wrong that we must form ways to stay safe through passed down advice and coded language. Little to no education in staying safe and preventing people (particularly men) from creating environments we don’t feel safe to walk in.
Our biological relationship with the night (sleep, visibility) and the irony of it especially for women as it should be empowering, spiritual, safe
Visual culture throughout history that encouraged the idea that walking at night is unsafe and how it often results in violence against women (art, fairy tales, films)
Linking historical and modern-day instances of walking at night and crime against women to show how things still haven’t really changed (Jack the ripper to Sabina Nessa)
Modern day visual culture and merchandise used as a coded language between women to keep safe (posters, advertising, self-defence keychains, call Angela at pubs etc…)
Examples of modern-day interpretations of fairy tales that show a more realistic and feminist viewpoint as well as a mention of a variety of communities and services that are trying to make a change around these topics
Analysis of primary & secondary data/research – Focus on female responses and the coded languages
Summary of what has been taught throughout and the most effective changes and resources

Subtitle 1:
Fairy tales and the night
(A section about how fairy tales pathed women's perception of the night and its consequences - 611 words)
Throughout history fairy tales have been the foundation of fantastical storytelling, visual culture and setting moral compasses. They are typically stories told from generation to generation, and are derived from mythology, folklore, and legends that are supposed to help teach us to be ‘good people’. The reason fairy tales link to women’s navigational Independence is because they often include a female protagonist who finds themselves in danger once alone on their journey.
In Walt Disney’s animated film Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs 1937, (An adaptation of the Brothers Grimm’s book Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs 1812) there is a scene between 07:42 and 10:40 where Snow White is chased into a forest by the Evil Queen’s huntsman. This scene is significant because the threat of being killed immediately sends Snow White’s mind into a state of paranoia as everything within this forest becomes seemingly dark and dangerous. From tree branches clinging to the princess’s clothes, to eyes staring at her from the bushes. As a child this scene terrified me because at such a young age, I couldn’t comprehend that all these scary apparitions were just in Snow White’s head. Rewatching this scene as an adult, it’s nowhere near as scary. However, I do believe having seen this scene so young has had an everlasting impact on me. Even today when I’m walking alone outside at night, I feel this irrational sense of being watched and needing to be guarded. The knowledge of Snow White being hunted for her youth and beauty further highlights the potential harm it can have on developing young women because it can lead to females with these qualities feeling vulnerable and afraid in situations they shouldn’t. On the other hand, it could be argued that from a psychological viewpoint Snow White’s interpretation of fear is firstly accurate because it is possible to hallucinate when high on adrenaline. And secondly rational because there are actual dangers to being alone in a dark forest such as wild animals, low visibility of tripping and falling hazards, and characters of malevolent intentions (The Evil Queen).
Personally, I believe this fairy tale is one of many that illustrates a young woman navigating alone at night as an unnecessarily fearful experience. But with context, these fears are completely justified and are supported by the biological instinct to survive and be prepared for all scenarios, whether possible or not.
A short time after this scene Snow White finds sanctuary in the Seven Dwarfs cottage. I’ve always found this concept to be quite ironic as growing up we’ve always been taught about ‘stranger danger’, especially for females when it comes to men, and yet the princess finds herself in a confined place with seven male strangers. Of course, this societal belief that male strangers are more dangerous than female is completely stereotypical, however it’s interesting that Disney put Snow White in what would be considered such a scandalous situation during the 1930s. And made it seem ‘okay’ by characterising the dwarfs as seven charming protectors, keeping away all dangers of the forest and beyond.
In my opinion, the damsel in distress and the heroic male protector are character roles that are incredibly outdated in fairy tales. However, are still present in modern society as many women in the survey I sent out expressed having a familiar male companion accompany them on late night walks or come and collect them from a potentially dangerous situation. On the other hand, then it comes to seeking help from a stranger, women are more likely to opt for a female counterpart. This is evident in solely female services such as Lady Cabs and Ask for Angela.
(Compare to a modern retelling of snow white and/or another fairy tale & modern retelling like Little Red Riding Hood/My Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter?)

See it. Say it. Sorted. - AML Group (aml-group.com)
As a young woman who commutes in the dark roughly five days a week, I have noticed a coded language appearing in everyday announcements, advertising, posters, and leaflets. Informing the public both on what is inappropriate behaviour, and the various ways you can get yourself out of those situations.
This coded language has been primarily evident on the London Underground trains and was first brought to my attention when they frequently announced and flashed above the heads of passengers sat opposite me; “If you see something that doesn’t look right, speak to staff or text British Transport Police on 61016. We’ll sort it. See it. Say it. Sorted.” Initially, I found the repetition of this announcement irritating as I found myself learning the entire script quite quickly, and sometimes couldn’t get the “See it. Say it. Sorted.” out of my head. However, upon reflection I’ve come to realise how intrusively brilliant the announcement is because, it has ensured I am aware of the services I can reach if I ever witness or become the victim of an uncomfortable and/or potentially dangerous situation.
In terms of origin, the “See it. Say it. Sorted” campaign unveiled at London Waterloo by Rail Minister (Paul Maynard MP) in November 2016 under Theresa May’s government. Self-proclaimed “strategic, creative and experience communications agency” AML Group had a huge part in creating the visuals of this campaign. The agency’s digital and printed posters boldly showing that famous five-word tagline in light blue, contrasting heavily with monochromatic illustrations of suspicious situations, in the style of the graphic Sin City novels. AML Group further claim “‘See it. Say it. Sorted.’ has appeared on 11,000 static and digital posters” and has “been broadcast as tannoy announcements across 5,000 stations and 13,000 trains. The campaign can now also be seen and heard on buses, trams, the London Underground, airports, and ferry terminals. But most importantly of all, texts and calls to British Transport police relating to suspicious circumstances have increased by 365% in the 3 years the campaign has been running.” These facts and statistics are reassuring for the public as they highlight how successful the expansion of the campaign within the UK’s Public transport has been, therefore making us feel more comfortable in reaching out to these services if they are needed in the future.
Overall, I believe the “See it. Say it. Sorted” campaign is a visually and audibly successful coded language for night travelling women like myself because the important information we might need is both eye catching and repetitive enough to be seen and remembered. I also think a lot of potential dangers follow us from the bustling safety of public transport and so being able to catch it and report it before continuing your journey alone could be the single factor that prevents sexual harassment or threat to life. Be that as it may, I do still have some reservations on how any of the information could be useful when walking alone at night specifically as they all seem to be linked to services solely linked to public transport (besides the police). Additionally, they could explore the imagery in a way that educates and deters potential offenders. For example, the images might demonstrate the life-long impacts of a victim, as well as the serious consequences (such as jail) the offenders may experience.
Another example of coded language is the #AskForAngela (#NoMore) Movement/Campaign launched by Inspector Hayley Crawford between 2012-2016 in Lincolnshire England. The #AskForAngela campaign was put in place to protect the public from unsafe situations in bars and pubs and was named by the Crawford in remembrance of Angela Crompton who was abused and killed by her husband and represents gender/sexuality orientated violence and abuse. On the Ask for Angela | Nottinghamshire Police Website page they feature an interview with Hayley Crawford where she describes what was going through her mind when she was working as a strategic lead for sexual violence and abuse for Lincolnshire County Council. Stating she started the scheme as part of a wider project to decrease sexual violence and abuse in the night-time economy.
"I was hearing of people meeting people from dating apps and having bad experiences".
"Angela was a good friend of my best friend and her murder devastated those who knew her".
“The scheme received so much positivity when it began in Lincolnshire and soon was replicated all over the United Kingdom and different parts of the world including the United States and Australia".

Me fez ter esperança no mundo.

TW: femicide.
A dangerous sexual predator who brutally beat to death aspiring lawyer Zara Aleena as she walked home alone from a night out with friends has admitted murder.
Jordan McSweeney, 29, trailed Ms Aleena through the streets at night before launching a ferocious attack, sexually assaulting her, and leaving her to die on the driveway of a home in Ilford, northeast London.
McSweeney, a heavily convicted criminal, carried out the attack in the early hours of June 26, just nine days after he had been set free from prison.
The “savage and brutal attack” on Ms Aleena, 35, was caught on terrifying CCTV, while McSweeney had been seen following a series of other women earlier in the evening before selecting Ms Aleena as his victim.
At the Old Bailey on Friday, he pleaded guilty to murder and sexual assault, and now faces a life sentence. The guilty plea follows a series of aborted court hearings when McSweeney had avoided psychological assessments, refused to leave his prison cell, and was suspected of attempting to disrupt court proceedings.
Mrs Justice Cheema Grubb adjourned sentencing to December 14, when members of Ms Aleena’s family will outline the impact of the murder on them.
In the days following her murder, her family paid tribute to Ms Aleena as a “joy to all of us” who had set her sights on becoming a lawyer at the age of five.
“Zara was friendly, she was everybody’s friend. She was everybody’s daughter, everybody’s niece, everybody’s sister, everybody’s cousin. She was pure of heart.”
Referencing the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa, the family said Ms Aleena “walked everywhere” and “believed that a woman should be able to walk home”.
“Sadly, Zara is not the only one who has had her life taken at the hands of a stranger. We all know women should be safe on our streets. She was in the heart of her community, ten minutes from home”, they said. “In a savage, sickening, act she was murdered by a stranger.”
At an earlier hearing, prosecutor Oliver Glasgow KC said the attack happened at around 2.45am when Ms Aleena was minutes away from reaching her home following a night out with friends.
He said McSweeney caused the “violent death of Zara Aleena who was attacked in the early hours of the morning of June 26”, saying she was “a lone female late at night making her way home, a woman who stood no chance”.
“Emergency services were called after her body was discovered in a driveway on Cranbrook Road.
“She was bleeding, struggling to breathe, and had clearly sustained serious head injuries. She was also partially naked.
“The injuries she had sustained at the hands of this defendant were so severe that nothing could be done to save her.”
Ms Aleena studied law at the University of Westminster and she had recently completed a Legal Practice Course to be able to practise as a solicitor. Introducing the evidence, Mr Glasgow said: “Eyewitnesses and CCTV directly links this defendant to the savage and brutal attack on Zara Aleena.
“In the early hours, he was following and observing a number of different women. He was obviously interested in them and their movements. Tragically, for Zara Aleena, it was her on whom he became fixated.
“He is seen on CCTV to set about her on the ground. He is seen kicking and stamping repeatedly on her body.
“When the body was discovered, she was clearly already fatally wounded as a result of the onslaught.”
The court heard McSweeney was tracked to a caravan when police officers discovered a bag of blood-stained clothing and shoes.
His fingerprint was also found in blood at the scene of the attack.
The killer, from Dagenham, refused to speak in his police interview and repeatedly refused to leave his prison cell as court proceedings progressed.
When his barrister asked for a further delay to proceedings, the judge replied: “The defendant has now had three opportunities to meet with the psychologist and he hasn’t attended on any of them. He hasn’t attended today, and I am not prepared to put the case over until November.”
The court heard he made threats to police officers after his arrest and claims to suffer from ADHD and a split personality disorder.
McSweeney has 28 convictions for 69 offences, including for assaults on police officers and members of the public.
He was released from prison on June 17, 2022, after serving his latest sentence for burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

“Feminicide is the subject of my practice. Through my art, I strive to spread awareness about violence against women and how horrific murders can be. This concept first came to mind during the time of COVID, when women in particular were at risk on the streets and cases like those of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa were frequently reported. Horror movies and true crime documentaries both pique my attention, and I frequently draw inspiration for my work from both media.”

McSweeney, of Church Elm Lane, Dagenham, east London, is accused of stealing her cell phone, keys and purse and attempting to rape her. The defendant was not present at the hearing scheduled today at the Old Bailey. Madam Justice Cheema-Grubb has scheduled a trial that will begin December 5 at the Old Bailey. The chief judge adjourned the hearing to Monday, October 24, with McSweeney remaining in police custody. In July, the Old Bailey learned how Zara was discovered with severe head injuries and partially clothed after the horror attack. The court was told that rescuers were rushed to Cranbrook Road after Zara's body was found. The autopsy revealed that she sustained several serious injuries. Her screams woke up nearby residents, who called the emergency health services.
Investigations
Prosecutor Oliver Glasgow QC added: "Police and paramedics were present and attempted to provide lifesaving first aid, but the injuries she sustained were so severe that nothing could be done to save her." During the attack, Ms. Aleena was dragged into an alley on Cranbrook Road, where she was kicked and kicked, prosecutors say. Zara was an aspiring attorney who had just started working at the Royal Courts of Justice. Her death sparked outrage after unknown killers killed Sabina Nessa and Sarah Everard in London on their way home. Zara's family paid tribute to her in a heartbreaking statement after her death. Her family added: "Zara, 35, a loved one, daughter, niece, cousin, niece, friend of all, was a joy for all of us. "She took care of her her mother and grandmother. Taking care of others about her came naturally to her. "Zara was kind, she was everyone's friend. She was everyone's daughter, everyone's niece, everyone's sister, everyone's cousin. She was pure of heart. "She was a delight to all of us, her sparkling eyes and raven black curly hair. Her good laugh and her sweet, smiling voice. Her petite figure embodied a passionate spirit and indomitable energy. ". Read the full article

Sabina Nessa was only 28 when she was brutally murdered in a park near her house. A small group of women on the law course at Sabina Nessa's alma mater, the University of Greenwich, London started The Sabina Project to end violence against women and celebrate the life of its former student. Artists over at Mosaics Lab created a glorious glass mosaic medallion to help honor and celebrate Sabina Nessa’s short, but impactful life. The medallion will be a part of the “Sabina Nessa Memorial Garden”  that will be unveiled at the Stephen Lawrence Building, Greenwich, on Saturday, the 1st of October.

Zawe Ashton on feeling galvanised after new film about violence against women
The actress, 37, stars alongside Hayley Squires in the 30-minute drama Maryland.
Tumblr media
Zawe Ashton has said it was “overwhelming” portraying the reality of violence against women in her new film but that it made her feel galvanised to speak out against the issue.
The actress, 37, stars alongside Hayley Squires in the 30-minute drama Maryland which follows the two women, both called Mary, as they go through the police process after reporting their experience of assault.
It is based on Lucy Kirkwood’s play which she wrote in response to the number of murdered women in the past couple of years including Sarah Everard, Nicole Smallman, Bibaa Henry and Sabina Nessa.
Tumblr media
During a panel discussion for the film, Ashton confirmed she and her fellow actors had felt galvanised while creating the project.
She added: “Probably the most overwhelming thing was, from an actor’s perspective, actually getting to say the truth of your existence in the world.
“There’s so many situations that you find yourself in, in this industry, where you’re being explicitly or not explicitly asked to self-abandon yourself.
“And put your truth or politics or the reality of things aside in order to present something lukewarm and you don’t often get the chance to go to work and say things like we’re saying in this film.
“And the power of Lucy’s writing is it resonates so deeply within you that it can feel overwhelming because it can often times be the first time you as a woman or as an actor have said that truth out loud, let alone in front of people, let alone in front of a camera.
“So I think there are so many different parallels that we all felt as a cast moving through this work.”
Ashton admitted she felt a “new level of responsibility” when taking on the project but said it made her voice some hard truths about her own personal experience.
She said: “You are always in situations as a woman where you are pretending not to know as much as you do, generally, and I think this film made me go ‘Hang on a minute, no’.
“You’ve looked down the lens of a camera and said some extremely truthful things about your experience in this world and there’s no going back from that.”
The actress added: “You want to crack that glass between you being an actor and being a woman all the time and it’s often very hard but I definitely have a new intentionality around that now, for sure.”
Kirkwood wrote the original script in two days following the murder of Ms Nessa and numerous women before her.
The piece, which she described as a “howl against the normalisation of male violence”, was first staged at the Royal Court in London in 2021.
Tumblr media
It was later adapted for the silver screen with Brian Hill and Kirkwood directing the project.
The film adaptation embraces its theatrical basis in a drive to move away from previous naturalistic style dramas which have explored the topic.
Ashton said that she thinks the naturalistic drama is still “a brilliant way” of challenging the issue but that these might be “making people even more comfortable with issues rather than jarring them out of a mentality”.
Maryland will air on July 20 at 10pm on BBC Two. (x)
