Fanfic: Filling the Missing Colors (by monk_of_figaro)

It seems that I've decided to write short stories featuring Sabin and each party member. This one is with him and Relm. You can check it out on Archive of Our Own. 1,653 words.

I think I've underestimated how much I enjoy Relm as a character because I didn't utilize her much in-game. She's got a kind of toughness and maturity, but is also kind of a prankster and brat.

Also, so many characters in FF6 seem to have unresolved daddy issues: the Figabros, Relm, Cyan (in a different kind of way). I'm sure that Terra has some complex feelings about Maduin, but the game doesn't really dive into it too much. But that's why fanfics exist!

I'd also go on a limb and guess that General Leo also has some baggage that gives him a need for fatherly approval. Maybe that's a factor in why he - as a man of lofty principle and moral code - willingly participates in a brutal military dictatorship.

Anyway, check out my Relm story. I think the kid will be okay.

He’s going to be honest.

For once in his life, he is actually going to admit, at least to himself, that he may or may not have miscalculated a thing or two.

When he heard that someone was sneaking in the Tower -- one of those annoying Figaro kids no less, who unfortunately managed to survive the literal end of the world --, Kefka kind of... let it slide. He was too busy destroying and rearranging parts of the continent care about particularly buff ant. A pestilent and bothersome beetle. A damn moskito who kept buzzing all over the place intead of staying still and allow the many monsters of the place tear him to shreds and throw him away like the TRASH HE IS. An annoying, frustrating little parasite, more than all the sand around that waste of space good at nothing but being an aesthetical nightmare in the middle of that hot, coarse thing that gets EVERYWHERE that stupid king called his castle!

...point is, Kefka didn’t give a damn. At first. He sure did when he got attacked out of nowhere and a punch in his nose sent him a few meters away. A punch by that pesky LITTLE PIECE OF GARBAGE.

“...well.”

Kefka groans, lifting himself up after slamming his back against a rock.

“Well well well well.”

A hand goes to his nose and lips, noticing a trail of blood coming from it. Granted he would’ve noticed it without having to touch it, but he wanted to be sure he wasn’t simply imagining it. That pest actually made him bleed! ...for about two seconds. Of course it’s just a matter of snapping his fingers and, poof! Any hint of injury and blood is gone. In fact, it took him so little, a more merciful God would’ve probably considered it a silly little joke, an accident, something worth a little slap on the wrist.

“Well welly well well.

SOMEONE WANTS TO DIE TODAY!!!!!!!!”

...BUT, hah!!! Kefka has no mercy, patience and other overly nice goody-two-shoes crap! He kind of ran out of it a few years ago! So, Sabin, you need to thank General Leo for making him run out of any of that if you’re now lifted from the ground with a simple spell and thrown as fast as possible against the first particularly big rock we find!

Rules/Characters I Write For

1. I will not be writing any smut, so don't ask for it....spice on the other hand (totally allowed :)

2. All imagines will be directed towards the reader who is a female or gender neutral. This means I AM NOT inserting names or personalized characters that you, the reader comes up with.

Example: Y/N can be the sibling of (insert character), but she/they will not have a name that you request

Bad Example: Lyssa is the sister of (insert character), and here's her entire backstory...etc.

3. Please be respectful and don't steal from me. It takes me time to come up with these ideas.

4. I have the right to reject any requests/imagines/preferences that I feel uncomfortable writing about.

5.. Your request may require me to get more information from you about the idea you have or the character you want said reader to end up with.

6. Occasionally I do talk about mature subjects such as depression, self-harm, eating disorders, bullying, etc. I will have trigger warnings posted at the beginning of each chapter.

7. I am in college and this takes me a long time to write out sometimes. Please be patient and understanding.

Having a literary celebrity like Arthur Miller for a father seems to have had a profound effect on writer-director Rebecca Miller: It surely informed the central installment of the collection of three short films she called Personal Velocity. Greta (Parker Posey) is an editor for a New York publishing house whose father (Ron Leibman) is a famous lawyer but also a bully and a philanderer. He lords it over his daughter and her husband (Tim Guinee), a fact checker at the New Yorker and an unambitious man who has been taking his time to write a dissertation for his Ph.D. When Greta achieves a measure of success in her career, she finds that it's time to discover who she is other than a daughter and a wife. Posey's fine performance gives this episode the energy and focus it needs. Similarly good performances come from Kyra Sedgwick and Fairuza Balk in the other two segments, both of which also deal with a woman at a turning point in her life. Sedgwick plays Delia, married to an abusive man (David Warshofsky), who escapes with her children to a shelter for battered women and begins a new life as a waitress. Delia has a history of using sex as a means to get even with the world, and when she finds herself giving a hand job to an unpleasant auto mechanic, she realizes she has to come to terms with her life. Balk is Paula, who is living with a man in New York City, but when she discovers she's pregnant and narrowly escapes being killed in a freak accident (we hear news reports of the accident in the other two segments), she hits the road, picking up a young hitchhiker (Lou Taylor Pucci) along the way. As with most road movies, it's a journey of self-discovery. But these stories feel more cooked-up than Greta's; they lack its verbal wit and the feeling that they come out of an internalized experience.

Compelled Dual Soulmates AU:

My brain came up with this at an ungodly hour and I wrote this instead of sleeping. I am not nearly talented enough to write this into a full fic or have the fixation span required to write this fic to the length it deserves. But maybe someone else will see this and be inspired!

Everyone is born with an artistic representation of their soulmate imprinted somewhere on their body. In Astraria they call them Kimryl’s fingerprints. The mark of souls so intertwined that even in their next lives the marks of the other’s soul still remain.

Leo and Sorran are not soulmates. It is rare in the royal line of succession for anyone to have the luxury of waiting to find their soulmate when there are political ties to maintain. But that doesn't make Leo and Sorran's love any less because of it. When Leo goes to leave Astraria that fateful night he parts with "We may not have been fated to be together but I chose you."

Leo's mark is on his ribs. Easily hide-able but blatant to see for anyone who's seen him naked. (Which happens often since he likes to trance in the muse like a psycho). But even after he's left he still doesn't actively search for his soulmate. He has other priorities of reclaiming his birthright to the throne. Not to mention he’d always found the concept of soulmates to be bullshit. Just another thing for the universe that has only ever dealt him a shit hand telling him what to do. So what use would he have to hope that his soulmate is someone he could actually love?

Zed's mark is on his bicep. After his many failed relationships he's given up on finding his soulmate or believing his soulmate would ever want him. So he hides it amongst his tattoo sleeve so that it is indistinguishable unless you actively look for it. He lies to Leo when they first meet about not having a soulmate and they are content to leave it at that. They are agreed in soulmate marks being bullshit so what’s the use of worrying about it.

They fall into their relationship as slowly as they do in the podcast. And later still to realize they are soulmates. It isn't until they're in Nora's house that Leo is finally able to start connecting dots (possibly fueled from his time in his fever dream hinting at it). Even longer still for them to have a conversation about it. Afraid of what bringing it into the open can mean. But once they do they fall deeper into their love for each other knowing that fated or not they still chose each other. (Just like how Leo and Sorran once had but this time could be different. Leo could still protect this one)

Phi has two soul marks which makes her a further oddity for those in the know. One each wrist. Having two soulmates is exceedingly rare and those that do are even rarer to have the fortune to find both. Phi having already grown up an outcast due to her status as a bastard child and the mixed nature of her lineage hides her marks like her life depends on it. She doesn't need another reason for the people of the court to gossip about her.

But when she meets Sabine she knows in an instant and it's like a fire is lit in her. She finally sees a glimpse at the freedom and acceptance that she's always craved and she pursues it. She hides her marks still knowing that her status and Grand Duchess would never allow her to marry a mere bard. So she savors their encounter while it lasts and continues her quest for more knowledge in hand until the next time they can meet.

The Captain is much the same but she approaches with caution. His relationship with Sabine is in shatters at that point and she doesn't know how he'd take her wanting a relationship with both of them. Of what it'd mean for her to have to choose. So she keeps things casual like with Sabine until the inevitable confrontation. When they are together in the captains quarters Phi finally let's her guard down and lays all her card on the table. And when she does she is greeted with more acceptance and love than she could ever have dreamed of being on the receiving end of. And they bask in each other until dawn.

Some other notes:

Adhana and Morlin are soulmates and when they were young they were like a pair of turtledoves and were proof to any who saw them of the truth that lies in soul marks and Kimryl’s wisdom. But that love turned toxic as the original as Morlin descends into the depraved man he is in the main show. It’s what initially soured Leo to the idea of soul marks.

Verity and Ruvaen are soulmates and yes they behaved exactly like a lovey dovey couple in a romance novel about it. Verity was able to divine he was her soulmate long before either of them saw each others marks. It was obvious when she looked at his birth chart.

Kalessa and Eleanora both lack soul marks. But that doesn’t stop their love from being as true as in the show.

Mia had a soulmate in their first life. But after their passing and ascension to demigodhood they’ve had other relationships. (As is the life of an immortal) And yes they could try to find their old soulmate in a new cycle but they don’t see much of a point. They’re both different people and it would be cruel to both of them to try and Fen and Mia have a long talk about it and agree just because you’ve loved someone else, it doesn’t ruin you from being able to love someone. Mia still chooses to be with Fen and Fen chooses to be with them. And that’s all they need.

Chapter 2

Two weeks later, Tom sat in his kitchen and smiled at the sight of you preparing your tea. He really was content with the way the both of you worked together. It was a given, that you´d know each other well after about 25 years of friendship. The last 10 had been especially close. He knew about your quirks, your heartbreaks, your successes as well as your losses. And Tom knew, that you knew all of it about him too. There was no question in his mind that he would be your friend for as long as he walked the earth. After all, it had been you he´d go to first…whatever the matter. He loved to get your input on his sometimes-nerdy ideas. He loved talking to you till sunrise about things, significant, whimsical or trivial…or not talk at all. He just loved to be in your company. Tom could be Tom around you.

Lost in thought he did not register your two attempts on getting his attention. Only when you pinched his thigh did he flinch and furrow his brows at you. “What was that for?” He asked.

“You have to leave the house in about 30 minutes…Unless you want to show up to the party unshaved and dressed in your sweats, I suggest you start getting ready now.” You said with a smile on your lips. Tom glanced at the clock and looked puzzled. “Whoops, I really should shower and dress about now.” He took a sip of his tea and made a funny face.

You nodded “Jep…go stuff yourself in that tight suit and act all proper and fancy. I´ll be lolloping on your couch, eating strawberries with dark chocolate and watch a movie.”

Tom stuck out his tongue and got up. “Go on, make me jealous some more…”

You grinned and took a sip of your tea. “Have fun…I´ll close my door in case you want to bring back company.”

Tom huffed. “I´ll put a sock on my doorknob then…” He stole the cup of tea out of your hands and took it with him, taking a sip.

“Hey!” You complained to his laugh.

“Thank you darling, mine had gone cold…” He singsonged with a chuckle.

25 minutes later, Tom walked into the living room in a bespoke navy blue 3-piece suit.

God, that man looked define. You had to actually make a willing effort to close your mouth.

“Would you help me with that tie?” He asked and opened up the knot he had made for the third time. Standing up, you walked over to him. Smelling his expensive and almost intoxicating cologne made you a bit lightheaded for a second. You took the tie out of his hands and spoke. “Bend down Hiddleston.” Tom chuckled and did as you wished. With sure hands you fastened the tie in a double Windsor knot and patted his chest. “There, all done.” You smiled and Tom pecked your cheek.

“Thank you, darling.” He stood up straight and slowly turned around one time. “Good to go?” He asked with a charming and very sexy smile.

“You look like you walked right out of a wet dream.” Came out of your mouth before you could stop yourself.

Tom snorted and lifted an eyebrow. “A Wet dream? Or your…”

“Go!” You shushed and tried to control the blush.

Tom chuckled and hugged you. “Leave a strawberry for me, will you?” He said into your ear and kissed your cheek for the second time in 3 minutes before heading out.

A long hot bath and three episodes of your favourite series later you had cuddled up on the couch reading a book out of Toms extensive collection. The reading lamp and some candles were the only light sources you had lit up after the sun had gone to bed. Toms house slowly but surely began to feel like home to you. Even though you knew you needed to go find a new home for yourself, you felt good living here. Maybe it was because of Toms unrelenting ways to put things of your home somewhere into his. You randomly found stuff and asked yourself how he got his hands on them. When you asked Tom, he just answered. “They look like they belong here…” Or maybe it was because Tom himself was the one constant in your life that had always been there.

You were about to light a fire in the fireplace, musing about your thoughts, when you heard keys unlocking the door. Damn, you had promised to hide out in your room in case he brought company. Making a run for it was not an option.

You probably looked like a dear in headlights when Tom came into the living room, tossing his keys on the table. He looked at you, looked at the log in your hands and your bend forward position. When you did not move, he came over, replicating your position and whispered “Are we playing statue?”

The both of you burst out laughing seconds later. You straightened and looked at him. “I forgot that I wanted to hide in my room…in case of….” Your voice trailed of looking at the time. “…Why are you home already?”

Tom opened up his suit jacket and hunched down to start the fire.

“I could think of a better place to be than at this party.” He smiled up at you.

“And why aren’t you there then?” You retorted.

Tom snorted and straightened himself. “I am where I want to be, silly!”

Smiling softly, you nodded “Ah, the party was that much of a snooze fest, eh?”

He laughed out loud and went over to the stereo, turning it on….loud.

“YES!” He hollered into a slowly fading song. “THERE WASN`T EVEN MUSIC TO DANCE.”

He threw of his suit jacket and rolled his dress shirt up to his elbows. The tie was gone next. Four buttons of his shirt got opened but the vest stayed on. When the first notes of a new song began to play Tom started to smile and moved to the rhythm. He took your hands and twirled you into his arms.

“Tom!” You laughed when he grinned down and took you into a proper dance position…only closer.

“Come on (Y/N) it is A-HA ….Take me on…” He grinned, happy with his pun of words. Out of his speakers blasted Take on me from A-HA.

How could you say no to this goof of a man? He would not let you go anyway… So, you started to dance with him wearing his bespoke suit and you wearing that old green shirt and plaided pyjama pants.

I'll be coming for your love, okay?

Tom wrapped your hands around his neck and held you by the waist while he swayed with you through the living room.

With another twirl towards the end of the song he had your back against his chest. Singing along into your ear while engulfing you in his strong arms.

The divine smell of him, his closeness and the feel of him invading a lot of your senses made you dizzy. Your belly felt weird. You had never felt like this in his close company.

The last notes of the song faded away and Tom kissed your neck. “So much better than a party with swollen-headed people.” He hugged you close for a second and turned you around to face him. The genuine smile on his face when his eyes connected with yours stirred another wave of unknown emotions towards your best friend.

“Are there, by chance, strawberries left?” He grinned sweeter than any fruit could ever taste. His hands softly stroked down your back. Keeping you close.

“In the fridge.” You answered and were already heading towards the kitchen. Maybe some room to breath something else than his scent would clean your head. You could seriously tell that you havn´t had time to date in about 2 years. Seemed like it was time to start again since you encountered symptoms of hormones around your best friend. Like those hungry cartoon characters who imagined food wherever they looked.

Toms´ gaze followed you into the kitchen. He frowned for a second and took in a deep breath. Through the whole of the evening, he had thought about getting home. Seeing you in that bloody old green shirt had made him smile. You looked good in green. And it wasn´t for the reason that he was fond of the colour because of Loki. Even in this old shirt and pyjama pants you were more beautiful than any of those pampered women he had met at the party tonight.

Tom got rid of the vest and tugged his dress shirt out of his pants. His shoes and socks already gone. Turning the volume of the music down to normal, he unbuttoned the rest of his shirt and put more wood into the fire.

With your head nearly inside the fridge it at least cooled down the heat in your cheeks. Damn him and his good looks. Maybe his charm began to work again after all? If you´d be honest with yourself it wasn´t only his looks that spoke for him. It was the whole human he was. Kind, sweet, funny, bright, lovable, giving. You probably would find another 20 adjectives that fit him effortlessly.

Sighing, you took out the chocolate covered strawberries and went back into the living room.

Tom turned towards you with a cheeky grin on his face.

“Still wet dream material? I am after all half undressed.”

Groaning you planted the plate onto the table and flopped down on the couch, hiding in a cuddly blanket. “This is so much worse, Hiddleston!”

Tom roared out laughing. “I´ll undress…just give me a second.” The shirt fell…

“Put those abs away from me!” You chastised and stuffed a strawberry into your mouth.

“Oi. Don´t start without me.” Tom complained and slumped down next to you.

“Didn´t I say: put those abs away?” You asked trying to sound stern.

Tom smiled and said “I thought you are immune to my charms?”

“I am having a weak moment…” You muttered.

He had the audacity to grin stupidly and put a strawberry against your lips.

“Then I shall enjoy it while it lasts…”

Thinking about last night when he lay awake in his bed early in the morning made him realise that he had been philandering…big time. The why he could not pinpoint. It just had felt right and he sensed the urge to get closer to you growing every day you were near him. His vibrating phone yanked him out of his thoughts.

“Mother dearest!” He greeted the caller.

“Good morning, Thomas. Up for a breakfast with your mother? I´ll bring the baked goods, you put on the kettle for tea?! Your sister needed to go to work and I thought I could make the most out of my stay and come by visit my boy.”

Tom chuckled and sat up in his bed. “You are always welcome, you know that. Could you bring a bit more? (Y/N) is living with me and I know she´ll die for some fresh baked croissants…”

“(Y/N) moved in? Oh dear, did I wake the both of you?”

Tom interrupted. “No…no..no.. She has the guest room. Her flat got flooded. We´ll get you up to speed when you are here.”

He could swear his mother said too bad before telling him she´ll be there in fifteen and hanging up.

Tom got up, dressed in sweats and a t-shirt and set the table.

Some thirty minutes later his mother and him already had a good laugh when he heard you shuffling down the hallway. “There she comes.” He grinned and Diana turned towards the door.

“Diana.” You smiled and your face was telling how much you loved to see her.

“(Y/N).” Diana stood and hugged you. “Tom already gave me a run down of your last weeks. Dear, I am so sorry.” Diana motioned for you to sit and grinned when she recognized the green shirt.

“It probably will be a pain in the rear to find a new flat if you can´t stand this one’s company any longer.” She winked at you and said to Tom. “Be good…she is family.”

Tom nodded and grinned. “Then she can´t get rid of me…”

“I already knew that, Thomas…And believe me, I tried in the beginning. But you are like a boomerang.” You teased back and kissed Dianas cheek. “Be right back, I´ll quickly dress properly.”

Diana waved your comment away. “Sit, child. I barged in on the both of you. And it is a nice reminder of the good old days when you all sat in my kitchen. Toms’ old shirt still fits it seems.”

Tom’s mouth fell open for a split second.

“I grew into it…” You said with a blush towards Tom and started to eat.

When Tom walked his mother out later that morning, he couldn´t help but ask. “My old green shirt?”

Diana smiled at him and nodded. “You gave it to (Y/N) when she stayed over offhand. Emma said she got something that´d fit better but you insisted… saying green would be better than pink.” His mother laughed. “She must have kept it all those years.” To Toms confused look she shook her head in a motherly way. Softly she patted Tom’s cheek and sighed.

“You have always been blind for the things directly in front of you…”

Little Diable's Birthday Celebration

So, as some of you may know my birthday is coming up, and we need to celebrate (since it's another lockdown birthday for me). I will dedicate February (besides the week from the 14th-20th) to a month full of Hozier songs and filthy fics for me to write.

I am a slut for this man and the obsession can't be stopped. I am sure there are other Hozier challenges out there, but I thought it would be nice to combine my fave songs with some of your requests. But there is a twist - of course there is. I will only write Priest fics - since I am a slut with a priest kink and it is super fitting for Hozier lyrics.

Using the Elements in Your Spells (ft. Avatar: The Last Airbender)

In my last post, we talked about correspondences and how they can add power to your spells. As a witch, one form of correspondences that you will probably work with a lot is the four elements.

These four (or five, depending on who you ask) elements are the building blocks of the natural world, and everything on earth is associated with one or more of them. Because of this, the elements can serve as a kind of “correspondence cheat sheet” for new witches. For example: you want to do a spell for self-love, and you know that water is associated with healing and love, so you choose herbs and crystals for your spell that are associated with the water element.

Connecting with the elements can also be a spiritual experience for many pagans, but today we’ll be focusing on their uses in magic.

Air

In her book Wicca For Beginners Thea Sabin says that, “air is masculine, light, and cerebral. It corresponds to… birth; youth; enlightenment; inspiration; communication; writing; mobility; and computers and electronics.”

Invoke in Spells For: increasing mental abilities, gaining clarity, travel and movement, new beginnings, spirituality or spiritual development, creativity, inspiration, communication

Magical Tools that Represent Air: incense smoke, feathers (make sure they’re naturally shed and ethically collected!), a fan, bells or chimes

Colors: yellow, gold

Speed: very fast (but the results may not stick)

Cardinal Direction: East

Season: spring

Herbs/Plants: rosemary, lavender, lemongrass

Crystals: fluorite, kyanite

Animals: birds, insects, and any flying animal

Astrology: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Tarot: the suit of Swords

Example of Air in a Spell: banishing something you want to be rid of by taking a pinch of cayenne pepper in your hand, whispering your intent, and blowing the pepper off of your hand and out a door or window.

Ways to Connect with Air Energy:

light incense and watch the smoke curl and shift in the air (an essential oil diffuser is a good smoke-free alternative)

learn something new!

express your creativity by drawing a picture or writing a poem

make a wish on a dandelion and watch the seeds fly away on your breath

if there is a situation or relationship in your life suffering from poor communication, take steps to resolve it

Fire

Thea Sabin says that, “fire is masculine, hot (obviously), and energetic. It corresponds to… adolescence; impetuousness; passion; drive; creativity; anger; force; light and brightness; and transformation.”

Invoke in Spells For: passion, creativity, motivation, transformation, success

Magical Tools that Represent Fire: candles (including electronic flameless candles!), incense

Colors: red, orange

Speed: fast

Cardinal Direction: South

Season: summer

Herbs/Plants: cayenne, cinnamon, ginger

Crystals: carnelian, amber

Animals: dragons, reptiles, lions

Astrology: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Tarot: the suit of Wands (sometimes called Staves or Rods)

Example of Fire in a Spell: Burning a red candle for passion and motivation.

Ways to Connect with Fire Energy:

go outside and spend a few minutes enjoying the heat and warmth of the sun

meditate by gazing into a candle flame

make and drink hot chocolate with cinnamon

eat spicy foods

do something you feel passionate about (especially if it involves physical activity!)

Water

Thea Sabin says that, “water is feminine, cleansing, and healing. It corresponds to… adulthood; nurture; emotions; the subconscious; the otherworld; transformation (like fire, but slower); mystery; compassion; secrets; and the occult.”

Invoke in Spells For: healing, love or self love, processing trauma, shadow work, psychic abilities, nurturing yourself and others

Magical Tools that Represent Water: a glass or chalice filled with water (or an empty chalice), seashells, sacred oils

Colors: blue, green

Speed: not very fast, but not very slow

Cardinal Direction: West

Season: fall

Herbs/Plants: rose, lilac, jasmine

Crystals: aquamarine, rose quartz

Animals: fish and any other water-dwelling animals

Astrology: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Tarot: the suit of Cups

Example of Water in a Spell: Taking a cleansing bath with rose quartz, Himalayan salt, and jasmine essential oil to promote self love.

Ways to Connect with Water Energy:

drink more water!

take a relaxing bath or shower

visit the ocean or a lake or river

use a deep meditation to connect to your shadow self

keep a dream journal to connect with your subconscious

Earth

Thea Sabin says, “earth is feminine, solid, and stable. It corresponds to… old age and/or death; fertility; money; stability; building foundations; food and sustenance; and agriculture and gardening.”

Invoke in Spells For: prosperity and material abundance, gaining stillness, feeling grounded, sexuality, fertility, connecting with family or heritage, creating something that will last

Magical Tools that Represent Earth: rocks (not just crystals, but rocks from your backyard as well), dirt or sand, salt

Colors: green, brown

Speed: very slow (but results will last a very long time)

Cardinal Direction: North

Season: winter

Herbs/Plants: all plants are at least partially associated with this element, but some especially “earthy” plants are sage, coffee, and patchouli

Crystals: all crystals are associated with earth, but some especially “earthy” stones are moss agate and bloodstone

Animals: bear, buffalo, wolves, deer

Astrology: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Tarot: the suit of Pentacles (sometimes called the Coins or Disks)

Example of Earth in a Spell: Writing a wish on a bay leaf and burying it in the ground to “plant the seed” for manifesting that desire.

Ways to Connect with Earth Energy:

practice grounding your energy,

do some gardening, even if it’s just getting a houseplant

spend time with your loved ones

play with your pets

donate money to a worthy cause

You may or may not choose to work with a fifth element, called spirit or aether. In Wicca, spirit is associated with deity, which unites the other four elements. In other Western occult traditions, the element of spirit represents the underlying spiritual force that exists within all things. In the book You Are Magical, Tess Whitehurst phrases it this way: “Ultimately everything is pure spirit element temporarily masquerading as something else.”

Because of its limitless and undefined nature, it can be hard to nail down correspondences for spirit. You can invoke the element of spirit to strengthen your connection to the divine, work with your ancestors, or connect more strongly with your own spiritual power.

You can represent the element of spirit in ritual with sacred symbols, such as images of deities, or with sacred geometric shapes.

You do not have to work with spirit to do magic. I personally only work with the four classical elements, and do not include spirit or aether in my practice. However, many witches do choose to incorporate this fifth element and find working with it very fulfilling. The choice is up to you.

One last note: this post focuses on how the elements are divided in Western magic and occult traditions. Different cultures classify the elements differently. For example, in Hinduism the elements are earth, water, fire, air, and either void or Askasha (aether). The Chinese elements are fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. If you do not resonate with the Western division of the elements, feel free to investigate other ways of classifying natural forces.
