Adam Devine's House Party, Episode 2.9: Adam takes his shirt off, Nick Rutherford takes his pants off, and some guys...um...never mind.

Adam Devine's House Party (2013-14, 2016) is a Comedy Central series where Adam hosts a party in a gigantic mansion to showcase three up-and-coming comedians, with a brief story in between the sets. I reviewed Episode 2.9, "Flip Top Twins," because it features a lesbian comedian.

Scene 1: The gang is set up for the world's biggest flip-top contest (where you drain your cup and then flip it over). Adam offers to order a pizza (for 500 people?).

Scene 2: The three comedians are hanging out when Adam appears, pretending to be his identical twin Jerome, from Germany. He comes on to Sabrina Jalees, who is offended by his obnoxiousness, and complains about sexual harassment.

He leaves, and returns as Adam, with his shirt off: "That's my thing. I have the right combination of muscle and fat." No argument there, Dude. combination of muscle and fat"). Adam explains that his twin is a sexual deviant who will try to mount Jalees, but she should give it a try because he is good at sex.

Scene 3: Sabrina's set. She saw a boy on the subway complainng because Vanessa wouldn't talk to him, and wanted to console him" You have nothing to worry about. You're 100% gay." She wished she knew at age 12: sleepovers would have involved titties. She had a hard time coming out to her Dad because he's Muslim,and wants her to have 10 wives (that sounds Islamophobic). Her wife's family are southern Republicans, but they love her.

I Used to Be Funny (dir. Ally Pankiw) x VIFF 2023.

Rachel Sennott continues a streak of interesting roles suited to her endearingly chaotic screen presence. She shows her wide range of acting skills as an aspiring Toronto stand-up comedian and full-time nanny dealing with PTSD after a traumatic event. Her central performance and chemistry with supporting characters captivates but the back-and-forth timeline of unfortunate events in the past and present clunkily unfold and feel overly ambitious for the relatively straightforwars story of overcoming trauma.

Screening at the 2023 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Northern Lights series at the Rio Theatre on Oct. 3 and International Village on Oct. 5.

I spent over $70 on food today.

A Nice Indian Boy - Based on the play, a gay Indian man meets the potential love of his life but is doubtful of what his parents (who know he’s gay) will think. Nothing will ever be as relatable as when Navern is on the phone with his mom. Speaking of the mom… HOW WAS THIS HER FIRST ACTING CREDIT PERIOD?!?! I loved her so much! She was a natural and she was so funny in the Q&A.

Doin’ It - A woman gets a job as a sex ed teacher despite being a virgin. A comedic look at what shame can do to a woman. So sex positive they gave out free vibrators at the screening. This movie is so funny and a lot of that has to do with the natural dynamics between the characters. Sabrina Jalees is my favorite person ever! And that’s saying something because Stephanie is standing RIGHT THERE!!!

High Tide - A gay man processes his break-up while his temporary visa hangs over his head. There’s is absolutely no way to put this movie into a one liner. I liked this movie a lot, but it felt like something was missing.
