BarCamp Scarborough – fun times and lessons learned!

As part of DigitalScarborough Simon Frost and I attempted to stage Scarborough’s first ever BarCamp.

The day started well enough, I got to the University of Hull’s Scarborough Campus where the event was to be held and found that Wi-Fi access worked, one of my two main concerns had been addressed, now all I had to do was wait for the other participants. Due to the location of the University I was worried that people wouldn’t find it, but just before 9am the first people stared turning up. After putting faces to Twitter IDs we waited a while longer to see if others would turn up – Simon did and clutching Brownies to boot!

Around 9.30am I decided to kick-off the day and made a slightly haphazard welcome speech and invited people to volunteer for slots. We managed to fill the whole days which was great but we had to limit the talks to one room. I took the first slot with a purposefully divisive talk about “My issues with Social Media”. The talk was intended to get a debate going from the beginning and I’m glad to say it did so. The list of talks are listed below:

We had quite a wide range of subjects covered and all warmly received. Not everything went to plan however and we have learnt a lot for next time:

Sign-up rate

The sign-up rate was very positive but only about half of the participants showed up. This creates problems when budgeting for food, refreshments and space. A solution needs to devised for this that doesn’t go against the BarCamp ethos. I have been told that this is a common problem and people are toying with the idea of charging for tickets but refunding them when people show up.

Streams

Due to numbers we could only run in one room. This means that people had to listen to talks that were not of interest to them. This is not necessarily a bad thing as a sense of camaraderie was created and encouraged people to get involved but it may work better to give people a choice.

Location

Choose a central location and a relaxed setting. This will increase attendances and encourage people to get involved.

Try and supply food

We were lucky that we found such a generous sponsor in nti Leeds but we made or own and the University were also kind enough to put on refreshments. It breaks the ice and encourages people to come along.

All in all I really enjoyed it and met some great people. We will definitely give it another go next year!
