Kagey Art Thoughts 23:
So here’s some art that I can find basically nothing about, except that it is associated with the Saqqa-Kana School of Art in Iran.
As you can see, though, it is Very Good. This is what humans look like.
It makes me think of medieval art in European countries, which often had a remarkably naive feel to them, especially considering they came after the classical art period that had so much focus on perspective and accurate anatomy. It’s very easy to criticize this kind of art, because it is so obviously incorrect and yet does not have the same kind of abstract or surreal feel of artists who specifically did that kind of thing. But then maybe the artist was going for a somewhat abstract or surreal feel, and it’s just not as obvious to me because it’s not the sort of art I’m used to
But regardless of how silly it looks, it is still art, and I still like it. It’s clearly an illustration of two people who love each other (either as friends, lovers, or family, I don’t know), and it’s cute.

It may have been half-term last week, but there was no break for London’s auction rooms as they embarked on their regular Islamic arts sales. According to Tuesday's Telegraph, modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art with its younger, more internationalised collectors seemed more stable than traditional Islamic art. Dubai’s Meem gallery that spent over half a million pounds, or 25% of the sale’s value, on three paintings by the Iranian artists, Sohrab Sepehri and Bahman Mohasses on behalf of a London-based collector of Middle Eastern art. A wonderful mix of truely amazing contemporary and classical art will be on display at the CAMA Gallery's private event at the end of this month.
