Tim Minear, I got a fucking bone to pick with you.
How the fuck did Nick and Nora, made during the infamous Hays Code era by the way, make out more times than Bobby and Athena? Like I’m not counting (I am and it is zero) but how is that exactly possible?
The film’s characters, supposedly married, weren’t even allowed for sleep in one bed because of those ridiculous rules and yet they seemed to convey more affection and sexual tension.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, you have no such restrictions with these actors today. We’re not even asking them to have movie magic sex, sir. We were just hoping for some actual fun sleuthing adventures with our favorite chaotic couple.
Tumblr media
—because that was the expectation you set when you said they were going to be like The Thin Man.
(This should have been a red flag honestly because—in my opinion—apart from “The Thrilling Adventure Hour’s Beyond Belief” with Frank and Sadie Doyle, there has never been a truly good adaptation or inspired piece of The Thin Man which actually has led me to think it’s some kind of curse on its own, like a mini-Macbeth)
How do you reference The Thin Man regarding the episode you wrote? Like sir, Nick and Nora were a rich, chaotic, drunk honeymooning, sleuthing couple with a funny little dog who just happened to solve crimes for funsies because the wise-cracking wife and her cute little nose would not let her husband stay out of trouble.
They made sleuthing look fun and marriage seem sexy which was already a revolutionary idea in the silver screens of the 1930s…like that is the complete opposite of what you wrote in “Abandon ‘Ships”, Mr. Minear. Did you even watch the movies or did someone just say, ‘hey, you know those black and white movies…?’
I don’t mind what you did in the episode. I mind that you uttered complete bullshit about it saying it’s like The Thin Man movies because, no, hell no. Not even close. I really don’t get how you pulled that comment from your ass, sir. Respectfully.
So did you lie or did you just choose to reference the film series because this is another jab at the Oscars? Because as it happens, they also presented the actress who played Nora, Myrna Loy (sidenote: everyone knew she should have won for the 1946 film “The Best Years of Our Lives”) an Honorary Oscar.
So what I’m actually saying is, you kinda suck for lying through your stupid teeth, Tim Minear. So like go kick rocks or something. And maybe don’t ever speak of The Thin Man again if you’re just gonna lie about it.

In folk belief, magic is often said to accumulate around liminal moments—points of transition, places where something is neither A nor B but both at once. Brides, for example, are vulnerable to malevolent magic because they are neither married nor unmarried; hence, our extensive array of superstitions around weddings. Midnight is the witching hour because it is neither today nor tomorrow. In ancient Greece and Rome, ghosts supposedly appeared at both midnight and noon, since noon was another hinge point in the day; it was the state of in-betweenness, not the dark, that allowed them to manifest. Adolescence is one of the most frightening and protracted forms of liminality, a time when someone is neither a child nor an adult, but can seem like either, or both. ...A girl's first period—blood shed, simultaneously, by a woman, and child, and the moon—rips a hole in the world.

Nearly every terrible thing about our sexual politics comes down to the fact that, in patriarchy, patriarchs understand themselves to be inessential. Conservatives defend “family” and fatherhood as if they're under violent attack. That's because, as long as women are self-determined and possessed of options, they are. The twenty-first-century war to maintain patriarchy includes not just legislative attacks on the right to abortion, but on birth control, and sex education, which allows people to successfully avoid pregnancy in the first place. The fear here, despite generations of rhetoric to the contrary, is not about “killing babies”; men have always reserved the right to kill or at least abandon babies that displease them, usually after they leave the womb. The fear is that women will be the ones making the decisions; it is not death, but life, that we want to keep out of women's hands.

Why does tragedy exist? Because you are full of rage. Why are you full of rage? Because you are full of grief.

but --
Sadie writes all about her first kiss with Nick Crosby in her diary for about a week after it happens. She writes about how she was unprepared, how she couldn’t be more surprised that of all people to kiss her, it was Nick Crosby, how she knows she should start liking him now.
But –, she writes, just like that. With the dash.
Because she stops herself.
How can there be the matter of but? When a guy like Nick Crosby, the most accomplished, popular, and cutest guy in the whole eighth grade, kisses you, what is there to consider? Sure, he’ll probably pretend they never had a moment, never kissed, never acknowledged one another in the slightest. But isn’t he the kind of guy that Sadie should like? Isn’t he the kind of guy she should go for, even if he doesn’t like her back? And who’s to say he wouldn’t like her back? He did kiss her, didn’t he? He’s kissed other girls before, like Kim and Vicky, but he didn’t kiss either of them at Kim’s party the other night. Just Sadie. Maybe he’s popular, but maybe he’s still a more reasonable choice.
A more reasonable choice compared to whom?
Sadie pretends like she doesn’t know.
She stares at the word and the dash in her journal. But – what? Who? All other names and faces should have disappeared as soon as popular, athletic lips brushed hers and meant it. She knows that. She knows it every time she remembers what it was like to kiss someone like Crosby. She knows it every time she hears “Do That to Me One More Time” on the radio. This is what it’s supposed to be. This is what pretty is supposed to feel like. This is what a dream is supposed to be like when you’re fourteen, and no one has ever glanced in your direction.
But –
Sadie knows.
But Daniel.
It doesn’t matter that Daniel doesn’t see her that way. It doesn’t matter that they’re only friends. Maybe it will be like that forever. Maybe it won’t. Maybe Sadie will get over him tomorrow, and all this fretting will have been for naught. Maybe she won’t. It’s no use in trying to guess. All she knows is that when she thinks about kissing a boy again (if that ever happens), it’s not Nick Crosby. It’s always Daniel DeLuca, and it’s always more fun than it is terrifying. A popular kiss is heavy.
Sadie closes her journal and thinks a little about what it would be like to kiss Daniel.
Much better than the real thing, or so she imagines.

I don’t know if this could ever possibly happen but, I keep thinking Ford and Wineshine should have a crossover with The Thrilling Adventure Hour, specifically the Beyond Belief section.
I just feel like the era is about right, the vibes are so very similar, the humor would work well. The Shipwrecked crew have dabbled in the paranormal with both Headless and Poe Party. Acker and Blacker have written mystery episodes. They even have an actor in common: Jim O’Heir played an eldritch god in Beyond Belief and played Constable Jim in Poe Party.
Though the characters do live on opposite coasts, New York and L.A., but Frank and Sadie have found themselves in more unusual locales.
I wonder if Ford could keep up with the Doyles, drink-wise? I feel he likely would not, though it would be a valiant effort and involve a lot of nonsense French.
Anyway, it’s at the very least a fun thought. I loved the Welcome to Night Vale and WITS crossover episodes way back in the day. I’d love to hear another someday.
