I’m pounding my hands on his shoulders, if I could only push him down into the asphalt and keep him there. The same height as me with his ankles four inches deep in the concrete. Then maybe he’d stay and we’d be on the same page and same level and same time zone for once. For once. 

“I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!” The sound of my hands clapping on the flannel he wore for three days straight last year when he’d spent my birthday weekend with me that’s now dripping with rainwater echoes throughout the parking lot. But the rain is so loud can he even hear it? Can he even hear me? It feels like he’s the only one who ever has but as the water fills my boots I don’t know if he ever did. 

The green, wool coat feels like it’s tightening around my arms with each sheet of rain, each grip of my fingers as they find my sides and I take a step closer to him.

He’s frowning. That stupid, stupid frown that he makes when he can’t come up with a quip, or when he’s thinking too hard about vocabulary, or when he’s trying to understand the instructions for his new toaster. That frown I know so well but never like this, because I hate being the thing he’s trying to figure out, to think about, to work through, because I’m the relaxed grin. The joke he pieced together, the favorite movie he’s seen one thousand times, the story he’s trying to explain poorly, but it goes somewhere good and he’ll get to the point in a second even though I’ve heard it before. 

He’s frowning and I hate him for it, I hate him. I say as much. Rain pushes the sopping strands of hair into his eyes and it curls down to his chin, hair that I cut that one time in Sophmore year because I had hair shears and his mom didn’t book him an appointment. “I hate that I see you in everything I do,” and his eyes are so wide and so big and so familiar, so familiar they could be my own, just like that stupid, stupid Justin Timberlake song Mirror that we were singing line for line in the Macy’s shoe section before Christmas some five years ago and still look wide eyed at each other every time it comes on the radio. 

“I hate that you know everything about me and I can’t take any of it back from you, I hate that you know all my inside joke because you’re the person I made them with, I hate that you can make me laugh by doing absolutely nothing, I hate

maybe you truly weren't meant to understand. it's almost cynical to watch him cling to it. there's an air around you regardless, it only proves the other's attachment. whether or not — it was obvious to him remained to be seen. wings protect you from the rain as eyes follow. ❛ it's raining, i don't get why humans enjoy being wet. i don't — it takes forever to dry ❜ for an angel couldn't appreciate things from the heavens. humans gazed with wonder even if to him ----- it would all remain dull. he leans back on the bench anyway, the thought wouldn't allow him rest.

❛ or do you enjoy being together? that would be an odd thing to say ❜ you don't hate the thought regardless. however for a devil — there was no fluttering of butterflies. a simple acceptance of how things are to be. an emotion you're too lazy to conceal. ❛ i would enjoy it if it was said . . . i suppose ❜ feet scuff as if they're against you're words but you don't care.

thin fingers tugging gloves back on before pressing a palm to the other's face. it was warm as opposed to your own skin. if only there was room — in your heart for envy. ❛ humans aren't sure what they want, take things slower or you'll die. ❜ tilt of his head before he offers a shrug. it was only his advice ----- though it was admirable just how much the other did work.

whatever the goal was, it was lucky to have the man's attention. a tunnel vision he noticed in spite of it all.
