🐾 A is for...African Wild Dog!! 🐾
Hey there kiddos! My name is Marble and today I’m going to be teaching you about my species!
I’m an African Wild Dog, but you could also call me a Painted Dog, or the Cape Hunting Dog. We have many names, but guess what? We animals have a cool thing called a “scientific name” which is a name consisting of two words in latin that scientists use to describe an animal. My scientific name is Lycaon pictus which means Painted wolf! Though I’m not as a closely related to wolves as you may think.
Here are some fun facts that make us unique!
🐾We have four toes on our front feet while all other canines have five
🐾Our splotchy coats consists of three colors: black, white, and different shades of tan. Each coat pattern is unique just like human fingerprints!
🐾We have rounded ears that we can move to make signals to other dogs while we are hunting, and typically move them to show what direction we want everyone else to go in. Our big ears also help keep us cool!
🐾Our hunting success rate is about 85% which makes us an apex predator!
🐾We hunt twice a day, typically during dawn and dusk
🐾We don’t howl or bark, we make a high pitched chirpy sound which can often be heard while greeting each other or hunting
🐾If one of us gets separated then the lost dog will make a “hoo call” which is a sound we can make that sounds like a bell! This helps the other dogs find them
🐾Our packs are “matriarchal” which means that we are lead by a female! She and a male she chooses to be her mate are called the “alpha pair”
🐾The alpha pair are the only ones allowed to have puppies, so they are the parents of the pack. The female’s litter can be anywhere between 2-20 pups, but she will typically have 10-12 in each litter!
🐾All other canines have “parental instincts” which means they naturally know how to be parents, but we don’t. We have to learn! We do so by helping our parents with the litter(s) after us. We feed, clean, and protect our little siblings, so that if we leave to start a pack of our own we know what to do, but some of us stay with our birth pack forever!
🐾The females are the ones who leave their pack. Typically a group of sisters will leave together when they are three, while their brothers stay in the birth pack. This makes packs mostly male, and some only have one female in them!
While we are cool canines there is one thing about us that isn’t cool. We are endangered, and need your help! Education is a powerful tool in conserving animals like us. By teaching other people about us you can spread the word that we are an animal that deserves to be saved. Not only are we super cool, but we are also important to the African ecosystem! So go on...run along and tell whoever you can all about us okay kiddo? I’ll see you on the savannah!!
