what is the name of this book on paleobotany?? seems like something I'd be interested in!
“Transformative Paleobotany: Papers to Commemorate the Life and Legacy of Thomas N. Taylor“ edited by Michael Krings, Carla J. Harper, N. Ruben Cuneo, and Gar W. Rothwell. it’s 732 pages and weighs 4.8 pounds, thus emulating the fossils it describes
fun fact, thomas n. taylor is still alive. like. he’s not even dying or anything, he’s fine. i literally met him at the 2018 botany conference and this book was published in 2018. he's just done so much for The Lads (isoetes and prehistoric plants in general) that fellow paleobotanists have put this together in his honor.
anyway. it’s $120 and ironically i am hoarding all my extra money to go to the botany conference in alaska this summer. that being said, if i get a copy it could drastically help my quest to unlock all hidden stigmaria content, which would be my best shot at actually presenting something this time around. usually when i buy stuff like that at all i buy all my plant books used when they’re a few years old and cost like $10 on thriftbooks, but this one’s too new for that.....like its not even for class like WHAT would be my excuse.....

exciting news !!!!! so my boyfriend hates spiders (his dad was almost killed by a brown recluse so I get it). I've spent the last ~year expressing my love for them and just now I talked about how I love crab spiders and how funny they are then showed him a picture of a pink one and he called it pretty!! I'm so proud!!!!
That’s awesome! Most spiders are entirely harmless to people, so I’m glad he’s coming around. :)
Not to use your ask as talking point (I’m gonna!), but I’m very curious about his brush with death involving the brown recluse. Did you know there are no proven deaths from a brown recluse in the US? And 90% of brown recluse bites heal with no medical intervention. AND, unless you see the actual spider, there’s a very high chance it’s a misdiagnosis. Here’s a short article from an entomologist and some skin doctors explaining what likely is or isn’t a brown recluse bite. Even doctors often misdiagnose bites!
The article does not contain any gross photos of bite wounds like many of them do for anyone interested in clicking. There is a video of a recluse spider at the top of the page, though.
Anyway I am of course not saying his issue wasn’t a brown recluse, since I know nothing about his case, I just hate to post negative things about them without a caveat. :)

for house spirits, you say to call them by name would that just be spirit of [location] or a "proper" name like john Smith ?
I typically address my own house spirits as “wights who share this home.” It’s a little fanciful, but I like that it acknowledges that this house is a space I share with the spirits and that they share with me.
You don’t have to name your house spirits, but you should clearly state who you’re trying to communicate with and who you’re leaving offerings out for. Even something as simple as “spirits of this home” will get the job done.

so I have decided my right arm will be a sleeve of animals (tats). I have had at least 30 people who after finding this out ask "... why do you have a bee tattoo then?" with the most genuinely confused look. at this point I'm convinced the general public doesn't consider &/ realize that insects are in fact animals.

hey there! I saw your recent post about cramps and just wanted to pass on a little wisdom that you may or may not already know. raspberry leaf tea always did wonders for lessening my cramps back when I had them. keep in mind I'm not a doctor though
Thank you for the suggestion! Herbal tea is good in so many ways. This is a super old ask, but I came across it today and wanted to answer, to acknowledge but also to note the following: The reason I had cramps bad enough that I wanted to post about it, it turns out, is that I RIPPED MY IUD OUT. Yes, for real. About halfway, and I had to remove it the rest of the way later. It was all extremely unpleasant. This was not a risk I was aware of with menstrual cups. Neither was my doctor, who was just like “Yeah, I guess that could happen. It could catch on the string.” He does not seem super conversant with menstrual cups, generally. So for anyone here who wants moon sickness advice, well, IUDs are great, and menstrual cups are great, but they may not mix well. I have no idea how common this situation is. I still recommend both.

spoopy tale : I lived in a house that was over a hundred years old for a little bit and there was this spirit that just really liked to fuck with my roommates (they were there before me) probably because they weren't really into occult stuff if I had to guess. well they started to really not like having things fly off the walls at them and a creepy shadow in the corner of their eyes so I was like fuck it I'll see what I can do and offered the spirit no more than 3 hits off any bowl I loaded ...
pt 2. in exchange for it to stop messing with them and to protect us from anything supernatural it could . well it ended up working and it never was bothersome again while I was there. one time there was this girl in the house that was just a PROBLEM on so many levels and 3/4 of us wanted her to leave but the one who didn't had a lot more say (he was rich and paid for everything) than us. I asked for help and she ended up seeing something that 'wasnt' there and feeling very unsafe and left
Oh that’s so awesome!! What a badass!! Work that shit

it's still warm where you are ? if you live in the US would you mind if I asked you some questions about what living there is like I'm trying to decide where to move. sorry if this makes you uncomfortable
Hi there! I'm not in the USA, no, sorry! I'm where I guess you'd call temperate Europe (and, to stay on theme, USDA hardiness zone 8).
It's not actually super warm here, but my garden is south facing and extremely sheltered (from wind, from frost) and it's always a few degrees warmer than anywhere else.
I don't know if I can be helpful, but my messages are open, and please feel free to DM me if you'd like.

@safran4 I don’t, no, though I just saw that I missed that they were involved with the USFWS project I reblogged, so I took it down. Thanks for the heads up!

Hey there! Hope all is well with you. Just wondering, have you ever considered doing smaller skulls (or any other type of skull) ?I think that would be neat is all. Your work is amazing btw ☺️
Thank you! :) I have thought if it, however I currently only have access to coyotes (I found the dumping site of a local hunt). I will be looking for road kill and other naturally dead animals for skull collection, so anything other than the coyotes will be few and far between.

bugs definitely are friends! one time when I was little I was really upset and went outside to cry and a fly, that for what's reason was carrying a chunk of a leaf (it was just a normal house fly ? I think), landed on my arm stayed for a couple minutes then took off without the leaf.
That was a gift to cheer you up how incredibly thoughtful of the fly

That.. that is the best thing I have ever heard [the book of problems] I am so immensely in love with it
Steal it! Start one! I love mine, I’ve been a little artsy with it too, using my brush markers and some hilighters I can only describe as “hipster tones”.

Bearded dragon : what is your fav flower (or aquarium plant )? Blue tounged skink: do you have/ want any tattoos ?
Bearded dragon: What is your favourite flower?
Ooh I don’t even know what my favorite aquarium plant is! I guess there’s a difference between what I like and what I actually have/can keep alive. I LOVE echinodorus ozelots and the big leafy crypts, but I seem to kill all of those so my favorite to grow are stem plants, which I can keep alive, and baby tears are my favorite there.
Blue-tongued skink: Do you have any tattoos? Do you plan on getting any?
I don’t have any tattoos, and I probably won’t get any. I’m almost too indecisive to pick a nail polish color I want to stick with for 1-2 weeks, so I’ve never been able to decide on a tattoo I’d want.
