Note to Self - Word Balloons: A Study
(No spoilers, don't worry)
14 total comics to compare against, across genres with half as traditionally printed comics and half from webcomics. While not an exhaustive list, should be enough to start to give some idea about preferences.
Text Type: Either fully capitalized (EXAMPLE) or with mixed case (Example)
All Caps versus Mixed Case
Mixed Case vs. ALL CAPS for all comics
Mixed Case vs. ALL CAPS for Traditional Printed Comics AND for all webcomics (same results)
A slight preference for the traditional method of writing out word balloons with text in all caps
Spacing Between Text and Outer Balloons
Min Spacing versus Regular Spacing versus Max Spacing
Spacing between text and outer balloon for all comics
Traditional comics are basically evenly split between a normal spacing (about the width of a letter) and min spacing (which leaves essentially no room between the text and the balloon)
Traditional comics slightly tend toward a minimizing the spacing between the text and the balloon
Spacing between text and outer balloons for webcomics
Webcomics are split between between a normal spacing (about the width of a letter) and extra spacing (which can sometimes double or triple the distance between the text and the balloon). Webcomics slightly tend towards adding additional space between the text and the word balloon
Word Balloons Within or Outside the Panels
Within Panel versus Outside Panel
Whether word balloon (typically) lie entirely within or can exist outside the strict space of the panel
This is perhaps the most obvious difference between webcomics and traditional comics. All traditional comics in this set only have word balloons that lie within the panel, while all the webcomics typically have there word balloons lie outside their panels
Conclusion
As reductive as it sounds, the overall conclusion is that any combination of word balloon choices are well represented in both traditional and webcomics. The only noticeable difference is that webcomics tend to take greater advantage of the negative space between panels by moving their word ballons out of the panel borders

Hob/Delloso
Hob/Delloso
Starts out as a star-crossed, Beauty-and-the-Beast-style romance between a very animalistic, awkwardly formal, military man—well, goblin (Captain Hob) and a very elfen-esque Master of Ceremonies (Rue), who’s busy with the job of hosting the huge, politically important party they just put together, and is also technically a member of another royal court. SPOILERS: Turns out Rue is an owlbear under their glamour, aka just as massive and animalistic as Hob. Both of them really love the other’s body specifically because it looks like theirs rather than fitting in with the traditional fey standards of beauty, so they’re lowkey serving t4t-vibes, despite existing in a setting where there are zero social expectations around gender. Technically they’d be a monster x monster pairing no matter what, as they’re both fey, but the fact that they both stick out even among the extreme visual variety of the fey people, and very much feel the weight of that exclusion, really makes them a monster x monster pairing in spirit too.

Squire from Saga character of all time. Heir to a kingdom that doesn't know he's alive. Mother assassinated with him in her arms. Dad also murdered. Knows how to shoot with a bow and arrow. So traumatized he can't talk. Only a baby. Inappropriate crush on his adoptive sister. TV for a head. We saw his birth in graphic detail. Ten years old. Ready to kill. The weight of the world on his shoulders.

The last time I was up to date on Saga was when I was in high school, finishing up Vol. 5 so obviously a lot of time has passed. It’s time to catch up again and I just finished reading Vol. 1, just as good as I remember.

PROPAGANDA BELOW
Upsher/Doff:
NO PROPAGANDA SUBMITTED
Luo Binghe/Shen Qingqiu:
Spoilers for: Volumes 2 and 4. Specifically their top/bottom preference and a scene in book 2 where Shen Qingqiu makes a rather desperate getaway.
Shen Qingqiu, after getting his Masters degree is Gay Denial, goes on to undoom the “main character,” Luo Binghe, from narrative misery after simply loving him too powerfully. The misunderstandings that ensue after the Plot forces his hand during an unavoidable canon event are legendary. Shen Qingqiu jumps out a window. Luo Binghe is soft for only one (1) person. Shen Qingqiu is such an expert at dressing everything up as comedy that you might not even notice the tragedy until it sucker punches you into the stratosphere. Luo Binghe, terrifying demon lord, is malewife and likes to do household chores/cook. Shen Qingqiu is a bottom to save Luo Binghe's manhood. They are batshit and its glorious.

You're a fan of Saga?! :D
Uh… idk what you’re talking about
*rushes to put away Funko collection and hardcover graphic novels*
I definitely don’t keep a Lying Cat panel in my phone for the sole purpose of responding to posts like this one, absolutely not
I fucking love Saga, although I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t kept up with the newer series since the local comic store went out of business in my town, and I’m one of those nerds that likes physical copies of comics rather than digital subscriptions, however convenient they are to have.
Saga’s such a great story of war, love, loss, family, and all the little things that go in-between. It tackles intimacy, drug use, PTSD, the struggles of being a parent, ALL things that people of the world can relate to on a galactic scale.
And the art is so ridiculous that I never have to worry about a shitty live action adaptation of it. 👏👏
