Ball del contrapàs in Tremp (High Pyrenees, Catalonia).
On the holiday of Sant Antoni Abat (January 17th), patron saint of farmers, Tremp has this tradition. A group of 6 to 12 local farmer men dance the ball del contrapàs in the town square, while a marching band plays the song.
The dance starts with one farmer placing an image of Saint Anthony and blessing it, and then he starts to dance. He dances alone in front of the saint's image for about a minute, until he takes off his hat and bows, and then he starts moving in circles in the square. Then, he takes a lit torch and delimits the space they will use in square. By pairs, the others join the dance, holding each other by the belt. The last one to join wears a tail made of paper, that the man who started the dance will burn towards the end. In the end, the man chosen in the previous year's holiday goes in front of the image and bows, thanking the saint for last year's harvest and asking that this year it will be as good or even better.
Nowadays, the dance is done 4 or 5 times. Each time that the farmers try to burn the paper tail but can't manage, they go to drink a little glass of wine, and they repeat until they manage to burn it. When they make it, the song changes and there's a round of applause. Then, every farmer bows in front of the saint individually, taking off their hats.
It also seems that nowadays they can use a firecracker instead of a paper tail.

The people from the town gather in the square to watch the dance. They share biscuits/cookies and wine for the duration of the dance.

Literally TWO MINUTES went by, and the card just appears??? In the car seat????
It was INSANE. Thank you, Saint Anthony!!! 🫶
