Today we celebrate the Venerable Benedict of Nursia, the founder of Western Monasticism. At the age of fourteen, Benedict was unsettled by the life of sin of the society around him that he decided to devote himself to the monastic life. He eventually began his own monastery where he developed his own monastic rule which has been passed down from generation to generation and is still practiced today by the Western Benedictine monasteries. This rule he believed to be a way of attaining perfection, or Theosis in this earthly life. Having lived a life of purity and prayer, the Lord granted him the gifts of wonderworking and prophesy before his peaceful repose. May he intercede for us always + #saint #benedict #stbenedict #benedictus #nursia #italy #rome #monk #monastic #monasticrule #rule #west #western #westernmonastery #monastery #prayer #faith #love #orthodox #saintoftheday (at Monte Cassino) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpvo5lUDebr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

GHDS LORE: ST MICHAEL AND THE EXOUSIAI
Michael is the eldest archangel, as well as the head of its "army". He is responsible for protecting Eden, and handling the unpleasant jobs involving violence and viscera that angels frequently condemn in mankind, but are necessary for maintaining the grip on believers that allows them to harvest passion so efficiently.
Despite this, he doesn't really come across on a first glance as the military type; he's clean-cut, dresses fairly simply, and has a placid, almost demure manner. even when you're aware he may have less-than-upstanding intentions, it's hard to confront him on anything, because he maintains an air of plausible deniability and respectability that dissuades argument.
The nature of his work is inherently difficult. Driving out the initial dissenters, protecting the most vital parts of the "hive", and overseeing the culling of sinners or otherwise diabolical beings is one that is contradictory to the concept of all-encompassing love and mercy and forgiveness. for this reason, Michael suspects that God has been intentionally withholding Love, and that he, the eldest, is being robbed of what he's owed, but no matter how many times he asks, he never gets a response.
The Born-Again's is Michael's solution to the violent nature of the job and loss of angel life that resulted from it. Angels, by function of only emerging once their human host dies, but needing the host to be alive long enough to feed them enough Passion to properly develop, are very much a "slow-burn". Their lifespans are much longer, but when a legion can be picked off by a rampaging cherub, that sorta becomes irrelevant. And by nature of the job, constantly moving around and constantly in conflict, born exousiai themselves aren't particularly able to reproduce in a way that would help replenish those numbers. It wastes valuable time and energy and leaves them with an obvious point of weakness.
Remaking human souls, while it does take some time and effort, has been much more efficient, and allows him to experiment with different ways of improving that efficiency. The process is done in conjunction with Raphael, the archangel who rules over healing and doctors, because he is better at weaving the physical form.
What he's also found is that the human component also bypasses an issue angels face with such a job: Angels, by nature, are not particularly violent. God's Love induces ecstacy and fuels their passion, but it encourages a placid, communal temperment. While born exousiai would naturally have a stronger impulse towards such activities, they're more reactive to threats or large-scale sins than they are proactive in seeking it out. And all born angels have a natural tether to God that allows them to receive His Love.
Born - Again's, however, are entirely dependent on Michael distributing it to them, and human souls are much easier to train into efficient hunters, especially when they view him as a holy figure. Instead of a traditional army, they work more in function as bounty hunters, with each reaping earning a certain amount of Love, proportional to the worth of the sin. they're typically put into pairs, and those pairs are all incentivized to compete with one another.
And with further testing, Michael has found ways to encourage the lifestyle required for the job by remaking them in certain ways, hence the monstrous appearances of exousiai like leopold and lacramioara. they need to feed on flesh or blood, and ergo, are more likely to choose to go after sinful beings since the idea of eating innocents is inherently upsetting to such pious individuals Sin, by the way, is simply a different form of Passion; focused inward, instead of outward. It needs to be processed before it can be useful to angels, and so Sinful Souls are sent to Hell, where demons will eventually produce Passion as a byproduct. While they often butt heads, the two do come from the same initial place, and they are ultimately integral to the other's existence.
The way Michael selects viable souls to be Born Again often is similar to how Saints are beatified; they must show enough fervor towards God to be more easily persuaded into agreeing to it. Much like the Conception, Michael cannot act on a soul without explicit consent because of the extreme nature of the action. An unconsenting soul will reject the process too violently to produce anything.
In Lacramioara's case, it was the intensity of her love; in Leopold's, it was his devotion to justice. Once agreed upon, the soul is tethered to Michael so they can receive their payout (he will often offer them a symbolic representation of this covenant, such as a collar, or marking, or ring), and then violently reshaped in the image of his design.
Their original, human bodies become Incorruptible (and thus often become pilgrimage sites). After that, they're sorta thrown into the deep end with Michael's oversight, since he finds a good scare followed by positive feedback is the best way to handle the human mind. They'll need less and less oversight as they become more experienced.
Born - Again's are still very human in nature, even if their forms have changed. Vices, obsessions, fears, conditions both mental and physical; all of those remain, because all of those things are what push humans to seek God's Love in the first place. While they'll never technically be declared "sinners" by the functional immunity of their job, the dissatisfaction brought on by the human condition is what Michael relies on to keep them coming back for the next payday. It could be considered cruel, but he sees it as "If they never felt pain, they'd never know what joy feels like".
A lack of God's Love wont kill them, it's just an unbearable misery on top of the small miseries they accumulate every day of every year of every century. That's why he needs to include conditions like the need to eat human flesh: because otherwise, an ascetic like Leopold may just choose to put down his weapon and live a life of miserable peace. Monks love doing that shit.
He needs to make sure walking away isn't an option, and then reward them with something they could never get otherwise. Violence is an art, and he has it down to a science. Especially in a world like the one they live in now, where believers and forces both diabolic and celestial mingle, where the nature of belief is constantly changing, and where the idea of "blasphemy" is no longer enough to provide the passion needed to feed the hive.
It's for reasons like this he does nothing to curb the curse Lacramioara unwittingly left behind after her death: it really bumped those church attendance numbers up

The arrival of St. Albertus’ remains from the Roman Catacombs in 1723 was a source of great excitement for the parishioners of the church of St. George in Burgrain, Germany, offering both a tangible connection to the early Christian martyrs and a glimpse of the heavenly treasures that awaited the faithful.

The relic of St. Deodatus in Rheinau, Switzerland, is an example of an unusual reconstruction technique in which a wax face was moulded over the upper half of the skull and a fabric wrap used to create a mouth.

St. Munditia, in the church of St. Peter in Munich, grasps a flask supposedly containing dehydrated blood as evidence of her martyrdom. When faith in the catacomb saints waned, Munditia was boarded up and spent several decades hidden from view.

BLESSING FOR PEACE
As the fever of day calms towards twilight May all that is strained in us come to ease. We pray for all who suffered violence today, May an unexpected serenity surprise them. For those who risk their lives each day for peace, May their hearts glimpse providence at the heart of history. That those who make riches from violence and war Might hear in their dreams the cries of the lost. That we might see through our fear of each other A new vision to heal our fatal attraction to aggression. That those who enjoy the privilege of peace Might not forget their tormented brothers and sisters. That the wolf might lie down with the lamb, That our swords be beaten into ploughshares And no hurt or harm be done Anywhere along the holy mountain.

My name is Solja. I was born in the year 1284, just before the third Crusade in Karelia, or so is written in the parish register. I live in small village we call Niittumaa (Meadowland). We have our own village church, where we go to hear the Watcher's holy word on every Sunday and Saint holiday.
I live with my father Erik, my mother Kerttu and my little brother Matti, who is going to settle in our family house after my father has passed. I'll move away in a year or two with Mats, my soon-to-come husband. We're getting married this summer. My father chose him for me.
A man of the Watcher, a monk called Brother Benedictus, is going to be present at our wedding. He has been living in our village for some time now. I think he is from the main land. I've heard he has met the Pope too, but I'm not sure, if that's true.
Life is precious and good here in Niittumaa. Our community is not big, but we are fond of each other. All though I don't really like Mikael Mikonpoika, a man who runs an inn in his house. He is very unpolite and grumpy all the time. I don't think he is very nice to his wife either. I won't express my disgust towards him, because condescendence is a sin.
My father's little brother on the other hand is very respectable figure in the village. He own a water mill down by the river. I have three young cousins too and I love them very dearly. Little Ingrid is only few moons old! My father's sister is only couple years older than me and she lives with my uncle's family. My mother's brother is learning to be a man of a church and he is an apprentice in Brother Benedictus' hosue.
Anyway, I have rumbled long enough. I'll have to go to warm up the sauna for the evening. Today is bathing day and we'll wash away the dirt from our skin. My father is very proud of our sauna. He build it with my uncle. They build one for him also. Not everyone has their own sauna!

image. hamsa amulet—ancient symbol predating monotheism, but occurring variously in levantine religions; providing protection from the evil eye. i discovered this interesting example in a columbian jewelry boutique: has embedded a miniature saint benedict medal face. the face is a reduced copy of the 1880 design by the monk desiderius lenz, which was minted for the occasion of st benedict’s 1400th birthday—the original medal predates to unremembered date.
legend. on the medal obverse is displayed a cross with five initialisms of exorcistic formulae: across each cross bar, one spanning quadrants, & two around the perimeter. V R S—the most familiar formula: vade retro satana — get back satan! st benedict (benedictus nursiae) was born in 480, thus i’ve written the legend in uncial of the period [cf. bernhard bischoff, Paläographie des römischen Altertums und des abendländischen Mittelalters, erich schmidt verlag, berlin, 1979, p87].

Mikasa-centered insert before their reunion
tw// depression
She knows they’re really worried for her health, both physical and mental as she idly sat at the edge of her bed. Eyes empty and void of emotions, staring blankly ahead at the space. She wants to cry, let out her emotions. But during those moments, it’s like there’s no more tears left to cry within her.
Her health is deteriorating and she knows it. Given by the reason that she doesn’t eat. Any foods prepared for her are ignored. Or if she managed to get tempted, only a bite or two was taken.
Her family and the Yeagers were getting awfully worried. She’s not the usual Mikasa anymore ever since her beloved died. All was left is an empty shell, it’s like her heart doesn’t know what to do during these days.
The locket, now ever so often is safely nestled on her collarbones, preserving the love that they always have for each other. A few moments later, she slowly rose from her seat then made her way towards the door of her room and twisted the doorknob.
Her parents and the Yeagers, hearing the rattling of her doorknob, immediately stood up. Their postures rigid and tense as they waited for her to come out. Not knowing that everything would’ve changed after the very moment she comes out of her room with a determined decision for herself. Hearing the doorknob clicked, they finally got a sight of Mikasa, pale and frail. Mrs. Ackerman and Carla couldn’t help but shed some tears at what they has witnessed. The poor girl looked so sickly and weak. Her mother couldn’t help herself but hug Mikasa and cry to her daughter’s shoulder, muttering “Thank God, you’ve finally come out”. Patting her mother’s back, words finally came out of her mouth “can you accompany me to the church? even for a short while? I’m just going to pray for a bit” Mikasa gently finishes and opened up her fist to reveal a rosary. Carla and Mrs. Ackerman looked at each other, face marred with hesitancy, then slowly nodded. They don’t want to further make Mikasa feel worse.
—————
Shoes clicking against the tiles of the holy place, Mikasa and her mom along with Carla quickly found a place to recline on. Black onyx hair covered with a long veil made with intricate lace weaving, pinned to her bun and her figure, hidden by a white dress. White is a symbol of modesty and purity. But to her, it symbolizes her and Eren’s souls and love for each other, entwined as one. And so, she kneeled on the hassock of the seat. “In nomine Patris et Filii” she breathlessly began, “et Spiritus Sancti” she ended it with a kiss on the rosary.
“Ave Maria, gratia plena,
Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus” by then, tears had started to leak out of her tear ducts. Showing her misery and vulnerability to the holy place as she tries to find strength by confiding in his holy Mother.
“et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus” she continues on the verge of sobbing, she’s begging. Begging for the saints and his Holy Trinity to hear her. She just wants Eren to come back, it’s not that too much to ask, isn’t it?
“Sancta Maria, Mater Dei” by now, her tears cannot stop. Palms clutching so hard on the rosary as Carla shushes her while her Mother could only hold her cheek, both of them shedding their own tears. They hate how they couldn’t do anything to stop the pain.
“ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
Amen” she finally finished it then buried her face into her mother’s neck. Soaking her mom’s shirt with her tears.
Raising her head to look at Carla, she began “If I only knew that this is how it would’ve ended, I would never agreed to him in enlisting for the army. It’s all my fault” her voice cracked. “I should’ve stopped him, it’s all my fault Carla” as she held both of the woman’s hands “I should’ve discouraged him”.
“Shhh, shhh Darling. Please stop, it’s never your fault okay?” The woman said as she let her hands fall from Mikasa’s hold then gently caresses the younger woman’s cheek. “My son would’ve hated that you’re blaming yourself. All you did was be supportive of him, and he’s thankful of that” Carla said while wiping Mikasa’s tears. “So don’t ever blame yourself okay?”.
Now looking at her own Mother, she took a deep breath and started, “I’ve been thinking and I have finally decided, that I’m going to enter the nunnery. I’ll serve God himself while taking care of myself and maybe one day, I’m going to be okay. It’s a way for me to get close to Eren as well.” She despondently sigh while looking down. “At least, I can pray for his peace and safety as he travels through the afterlife” she ended it with a new mirth. A one her mother had not seen for so long.
“Are you sure?” Mrs. Ackerman looked so uncertain. Because she knows that it would bring a new chapter in their lives. The future is foggy, not knowing what was set upon them once her daughter enters the convent. “Yes mama, I’m certain” her ever so sweet daughter replied with a beam. “O-okay, if that’s what you want to make yourself content” the elder woman answered quite weakly.
Sorry if this sucks and took so long. I got busy 😭 and now going to plot how they would reunite
motherfucker here is making me look so useless as fuck 😭😭😭😭😭 but this is so good anon really. i love it. but let me ask you… do you guys say the prayer in latin? 💀 wtf

THE DESCRIPTION OF THE BIRTH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST Feast Day: June 24
"He must increase, but I must decrease." -John 3:30
The feast commemorating his birth is celebrated every year on June 24th.
In the Holy Gospel according to Luke, John the Baptist shares with the Blessed Virgin Mary, the privilege of celebrating not only his entrance into eternal life, but also the days of his birth.
His parents - Zechariah (or Zachary) and Elizabeth, were righteous in the eyes of God, but they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in years.
Once, when Zechariah was serving as a priest in the temple, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him. He said: 'Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John.'
Zechariah protested that he and his wife were old, and he said: 'Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.'
And Gabriel replied: 'You will be speechless until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words.'
When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have a child, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said: 'No, he will be called John.' They were surprised, since none of the family had such a name. So, Zechariah asked for a tablet and wrote: 'His name is John.'
Immediately, his motuh was opened he began praising God saying: 'Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel.' Then, he said the Canticle of Zechariah or the Benedictus.
The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the days of his manifestation in Israel.
