The Sainte-Chapelle is the finest royal chapel to be built in France and features a truly exceptional collection of stained glass windows. It was built in the mid 13th century by Louis IX, at the heart of the royal residence, the Palais de la Cité, to house the relics of the Passion of Christ. Adorned with a unique collection of fifteen glass panels and a rose window forming a veritable wall of light, the Sainte-Chapelle gem of Rayonnant Gothic architecture.

Louis IX et la politique capétienne à la Sainte-Chapelle de Paris

La Sainte-Chapelle de Paris fut consacrée à l'origine en tant que chapelle royale privée en 1248, sous le règne du roi Louis IX (r. de 1226 à 1270), connu de son vivant comme rex christianissimus("roi le plus chrétien") et canonisé à sa mort en tant que saint Louis. Visuellement étonnante, la chapelle est remplie de symboles politiques et religieux destinés à communiquer et à légitimer le pouvoir de Louis IX et de la dynastie capétienne.
